Samsung’s Galaxy View shows up again in new render
The Galaxy View has shown up in many forms. Samsung first teased the device at its Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ event, and since, there’s been a myriad of leaks indicating its massive size and decidedly low specifications. Now, serial leakster Evan Blass has gotten his hands on another render.
There’s not much to say here besides that. We saw these same renders earlier, but they were difficult to see due to watermarks. You can get a full look at the device with this image (pictured above).
As far as prior leaks go, early benchmarks indicate the Galaxy View will have a 18.5-inch 1920 x 1080 display in tow, a 1.6GHz Octa-core Exynos 7580 chipset, a Mali-T720 GPU, 32GB of onboard storage, 2GB of RAM, a 2-megapixel front camera, and a 5,700mAh battery. Not the most impressive specs for such a massive machine, but we’ll no doubt hear more in the coming months.

ICYMI: Egyptian tomb tech, new fusion reactors and more
![]()
Today on In Case You Missed It: Everyone who ever wanted to be Indiana Jones or just give up on it all and join an archeological dig will be interested in this: A new project called “Scan Pyramids” will use infrared scanners and cosmic ray detectors to search for new tombs inside pyramids in Egypt, as well as attempt to discover the engineering details of how pyramids were constructed. Fascinating stuff! Plus scientists at the Max Planck Institute want to launch a new design for a fusion reactor. It has a twisted shape unlike the traditional donut design, which its scientists believe is safer than the first version.
Drop’s kitchen scale celebrates iPhone debut with cocktail recipes
Drop’s smart scale promises to turn any kitchen klutz into a competent cook. Like your own personal sous-chef, the connected scale and companion app walks you through recipes step-by-step, even suggesting substitute ingredients if you’ve run out of wild saffron. Drop’s audience has been somewhat limited since it launched late last year, though, as its recipe app was only compatible with iPads. But now, iPhone users can get a little help in the kitchen too, following the launch of a smartphone-friendly version of the app (still no love for Android, it seems). What’s way, way more important, however, is Drop’s finally acknowledging that the best lunches are ones of the liquid variety. In addition to the juice and smoothie recipes already available, Drop’s app now includes a cocktail menu. All you need to do is place your favorite booze beaker on the scale and follow the instructions, which should mean your sixth mojito comes out tasting just as well-balanced as your first.Slideshow-335126

EU passes net neutrality laws that leave ‘fast lane’ loopholes
Legislation designed to protect net neutrality and abolish mobile phone roaming fees has been passed today by the European Parliament. These new rules — hotly debated for two years by EU representatives — are now finalised and will soon cover the entire continent, including the UK. While the end of expensive holiday phone bills won’t take place until 2017, the updated internet protections should come into effect fairly quickly. Such a moment ought to be cause for celebration, however many in the technology industry are now concerned about loopholes that could enable internet “fast lanes.” Today’s vote included amendments that would’ve sealed up those weaknesses — but it seems the Parliament was happy enough with the wording and pushed ahead regardless.

Impulse Buy Alert: The HTC Re is now just $50
HTC was ambitious when they decided to take on GoPro with their HTC Re. The action cam didn’t gain much traction due to lack of features and a high price point. Now it looks like HTC is trying to get rid of its stock.
On HTC’s online store, you can now pick up the HTC Re for just $50. That’s 75% off the original $200 price tag. No word yet on whether this price will trickle down to other retailers that are selling the Re. Amazon still lists it for about $100 and Best Buy still offers it for $150. The Re is a respectable offering into the action cam arena, but it was obviously a first gen product from HTC. The price was too high and customers shied away in favor of more well-established products like the GoPro.
The HTC Re has a periscope like frame that holds a 16MP camera. The device is waterproof and has a Micro SD card slot. You can connect to iOS and Android Apps to control the camera and there are optional accessories you can pick up to increase functionality or for mounting.
Is this crazy price drop enough to get you interested in the HTC Re? Let us know down in the comments if you pick one up.

Apple Remaining ‘Conservative’ Over Upcoming Sales of iPad Pro
The iPad Pro is less than a month from launch — with an unspecified date for the device sometime in November — but a few rumors out of Apple’s supply chain yesterday are already pointing to the company’s expected sales figures for the 12.9-inch display tablet. According to the supply chain sources (via DigiTimes), Apple has placed “limited orders” for the iPad Pro for the 2015 holiday season, leading into the first quarter of 2016, pointing towards a “conservative attitude” regarding the sales of the larger-screened iPad.
Specifically, the sources say the company has placed orders for less than 2.5 million iPad Pro units for the end of 2015. After that, Apple is believed to take a wait-and-see approach to the volume amount for Q1 2016, which could be even lower than 2.5 million if holiday sales this year aren’t impressive enough for the Cupertino-based company. The supply chain sources note that since most businesses are always looking to cut costs, the top-tier pricing of the enterprise-focused iPad Pro, and its accessories, may in fact not hit its target demographic as Apple expects.
The tablet market as a whole has stagnated over the past few years, as more and more users remain unconvinced of a reason to upgrade yearly for such a tertiary device. In July, iPad sales were found to have been in decline for six consecutive quarters, with much hope aimed at the 2015 holiday season’s launch of the new iPad line. With today’s conservative iPad Pro estimates, no iPad Air 3 launching this year, and Apple’s own soft launch of the iPad mini 4, it seems like iPad sales — and the tablet market as a whole — may not rebound as much as expected this holiday.
Huawei Challenges Apple and Samsung as Third-Largest Smartphone Maker
While the smartphone market largely remains a two-horse race between rivals Apple and Samsung, Chinese handset maker Huawei is placing increasing pressure on the industry giants after experiencing strong growth in China and Europe in 2015.
Third-quarter deliveries climbed 81 percent and 98 percent in China and Europe respectively from a year ago. About a third of the quarterly shipments were mid- to high-end models, Huawei said, up from 25 percent a year earlier.
Huawei cemented its position as the third-largest smartphone vendor, a rank that previously belonged to Chinese rival Xiaomi, after its third-quarter smartphone shipments rose 63% year-over-year to 27.4 million handsets, according to Reuters.
“It’s hard to find a solid contender to Huawei for the top three position (after Samsung and Apple) in the short term,” said Nicole Peng, Asia Pacific director at research firm Canalys. “That’s impressive growth.”
Huawei is projected to ship more than 100 million smartphones in 2015, around 33% more than 2014, outpacing growth forecast for major rivals including Apple, Xiaomi and Lenovo. The Shenzhen-based handset maker also doubled its smartphone revenue in the first half of 2015 in China, a key smartphone market alongside the United States.
Nevertheless, Huawei remains a distant third behind Apple and Samsung, largely because its market penetration remains low in the U.S., where its devices were once labeled a security risk in a U.S. Congressional report. Huawei’s smartphone market share was worth $7 billion in the second quarter, according to Canalys.
Astropad Mini App Gains 3D Touch Support With Pressure Sensitive Drawing on iPhone 6s
Astropad Mini, the app that turns the iPhone into a graphics tablet for the Mac, is getting a major update today to add new features to the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. The new version of the app includes support for 3D Touch, enabling pressure sensitive drawing.
When using a finger or a stylus, the iPhone 6s or 6s Plus is able to detect 256 levels of pressure being on the screen, letting users draw thinner or thicker lines based on the amount of pressure that’s applied.
For those unfamiliar with the Astropad line of apps, they’re able to transform an iPhone or an iPad into a professional graphics tablet that can be used with the Mac by mirroring the Mac’s display to the iPhone. The iPhone’s touch controls are then used for creative tasks like editing photos and creating art with little to no lag. Because the app simply mirrors what’s on the Mac’s screen, it’s compatible with any Mac-based editing app like Photoshop CC and Pixelmator.
The Astropad Mini app for the iPhone is now a free download, as is the Mac app, so the Astropad system can be used by anyone at no cost. The Mac app is available from the Astropad website and the iPhone app is available from the iOS App Store. [Direct Link]
First Galaxy S6 Edge+ update arrives, with battery and security improvements

Samsung has begun rolling out its first update for its Galaxy S6 Edge+ handset this week, which brings a small selection of improvements to Samsung’s latest flagship. The unlocked version of the Galaxy Note 5, which features mostly identical hardware to the S6 Edge+, received a similar upgrade last week.
The update comes with the build number G928GDDU2A0J5 and weighs in at 138.14MB, so it’s a reasonably sized update. The patch notes state that the Galaxy S6 Edge+ should see improved battery life after the update, not that the handset was too bad in this regard anyway. The stability of calls has now been improved and there are some unspecified adjustments to device security too.
Samsung states that these security tweaks are the reason why customers won’t be able to downgrade to a previous software version after the update, as is also the case with the Note 5’s latest patch. Sadly, there’s no Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for Samsung’s flagships just yet. That upgrade is expected to arrive sometime in early 2016.
