New York’s Attorney General probing state broadband speeds
For an industry obsessed with accuracy, it seems hilarious that the broadband speeds that you pay for are so vague and ill-defined in reality. It’s a situation that has angered New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (pictured), so he’s launching a statewide probe into users internet speeds. Reuters is reporting that the official is targeting the state’s big three providers, Verizon, Cablevision and Time Warner to see if, as he says, “many of us may be paying for one thing and getting another.” The three firms have all been sent letters asking them to provide all disclosures made to customers about speed, as well as the details of any internal testing that they carry out.

Limited Nexus 6P stock to go on sale in India first week of November

Indian Nexus fans have been able to purchase the new 5X for almost a week now, but there is still no sign of the larger Nexus 6P. Huawei’s Vice President of Sale in India, P. Sanjeev, has now announced that the smartphone won’t be available in the country until the first week of November.
Along with the announcement, Huawei also stated that Nexus 6P stock would be arriving in India in batches. This is apparently to ensure a “smooth demand-supply cycle”, although the company did not confirm how many handsets would be made available in the country at the start of sales or how often these batches could come in. Hopefully we are not looking at another Nexus supply drama here.
“The first batch of the smartphone will be available in India starting first week of November. We are working closely with Flipkart and our retail partners on the availability of the smartphones to the Nexus 6P fans.” – P. Sanjeev, Huawei
Indian e-commerce giant FlipKart has previously suggested that its Nexus 6P stock would not be arriving until the end of October and that the handset wouldn’t be available to purchase until November 2nd, which now matches up with Huawei’s announcement. We do know that the Nexus 6P will cost Rs. 39,999 for the 32GB storage variant and Rs. 42,999 for the 64GB model.

OnePlus X may cost the equivalent of $270 in China
Despite the “clandestine” nature of OnePlus’ second offering this year, the company has been surprisingly straightforward with it. Months ago, Carl Pei himself even told the press his company would have a pair of products to offer. Indeed this month has brought some new news, but not a price point. Now it seems we know how much this “Mini” is going to cost: $270, at least according to a leaked advertisement:

To be fair, this price – assuming it’s legitimate – is for the Chinese market, so there is always a chance it will be less for customers in the USA, especially given the company doesn’t have nearly the same name recognition outside of Asia.
Regardless of what the cost actually is, the potential of a $270″small” device is not likely to gain OnePlus the positive kind of traction last year saw. The company, having earlier this year promised a 2016 flagship killer with its OnePlus 2, has been criticized to the point where the company itself has sought to apologize for the excessive hype and promises.
The handset is said to feature 5-inch 1080p display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and Synaptics’ ClearForce Technology, an octa-core MediaTek MT6795 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 13-megapixel Sony IMX258 camera, and a 2,450mAh battery. The phone is said to be powered by Oxygen 3.0 OS, itself based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
The rear camera is purported to have phase detection auto focus technology, but will lack optical image stabilization. Also on board is IP67 certification, NFC, an FM radio, an IR blaster, front facing speakers, and removable StyleSwap covers.
It remains to be seen just what OnePlus plans to do with purchasing plans given that its standard product line has, so far, made use of a highly polarizing reservation system outside of China.
With a launch event set for this week in London, it’s only a matter of time before all of this can be confirmed. In the meanwhile, what do you think about the potential price point?
Entry-level OPPO Neo 7 officially announced

Today, OPPO has unveiled a new smartphone in its Neo line-up, known as the Neo 7. Much like the Neo 5 and 5s that the company unveiled earlier in the year, the Neo 7 certainly fits into the entry-level category of the market.
For hardware, the Neo 7 comes with a 5-inch display that packs a rather meagre 960×540 pixel resolution. Something closer to the 720p mark would have been nicer, given the 5-inch display size. The phone is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 SoC, paired up with a single GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 2,420mAh battery. There’s also an 8 megapixel rear camera complete with LED flash and a 5 megapixel front facing camera. Overall, the base specifications are a modest step up from the Neo 5 handsets.

The Neo 7 also comes with dual-SIM support, a microSD card slot and 4G LTE connectivity, which are nice extras. OPPO’s Android Lollipop based Color OS 2.1 forms the base of the software experience. The company has also thrown in some rather novel software features, including a Lockscreen Magazine, its Beautify 3.0 camera filters, and Screen Flash for selfies.
While the hardware doesn’t quite keep up with the likes of the Moto G, the Neo 7’s design certainly looks sleek, in both the black and white/gold color options. The smartphone measures 142.7 x 71.7 x 7.55 mm and weighs 147 grams.

The limited specifications certainly suggest that the Neo 7 will come at an affordable price point, although OPPO hasn’t revealed pricing information just yet. The company has mentioned that there will be three models available, one for the US market, one for India and a general international model. The smartphone should be available to purchase in the next few weeks.
See how InVisage’s HDR sensor will improve smartphone filmmaking
It’s been over five years since we heard from InVisage, a company developing a new kind of smartphone sensor with higher dynamic range and zero rolling shutter. It just produced a short film called Prix using a prototype chip to show exactly how the tech works. As a reminder, InVisage developed a photosensitive nano-coating it calls QuantumFilm that works differently than silicon. It claims that the material has “higher photosensitivity and electron sensitivity per pixel,” which makes it react more like film than a typical CMOS sensor. It’s also fast enough to instantly switch on and off, allowing the use of a global instead of a rolling shutter.

Scientists made the blackest material ever
Scientists may have made a breakthrough in materials that can help manipulate light at nanoscale, but is it really, really, really black? No. Researchers at Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulla University of Science and Technology have created a carbon-nanotube material that absorbs 98 to 99 percent of light (at all angles) between 400 and 1,400nm. But there’s actually a reason why something that black needs to exist. These absorbers take on important roles when it comes to solar power absorption and optical interconnects, where fiberoptic data is being passed around. Researchers were able to put a small concentration of their special nanoparticles into a solution, which gave 26 percent more absorption than carbon nanotube — the previous prince of (material) darkness. For now, there’s none more black.

Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2 get the spec leak treatment ahead of Oct 27th reveal
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Verizon is gearing up to launch its latest smartphones, the Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2, but we’ve been fielding a decent number of leaks for both devices in the lead up to the October 27th unveiling. The latest leak is the most revealing, giving us basically a full list of specs for both devices and a few interesting tidbits about how Verizon’s line-up is going to look once the devices are out. Potentially the most interesting part of this report is that Verizon is still going to continue making the original Droid Turbo available, meaning you could snap up a still-relevant flagship at a good price (hopefully).
There aren’t many surprises about the specs for the Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2 – check out the brochures above for more details. The Droid Turbo 2 will be available in 32GB and 64GB versions, with the 64GB version only available through the Moto Maker site with a design refresh within two years as leaked in a previous report. The Droid Maxx 2 will also get one free screen repair in the first two years, which is always nice to have. Of course, we’ll likely have to wait till October 27th before we get pricing and availability details, but keep your eyes and ears open.
What do you think about Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Comedians Andy Kaufman and Redd Foxx will return as ‘holograms’
Holographic (really, “Pepper’s Ghost”) versions of dead musicians have proven successful, so why not comedians from days gone by? Hologram USA doesn’t think that’s a bad idea, at least. The tech firm has revealed that it’s producing visual resurrections of legendary comedians Andy Kaufman and Redd Foxx that will go on tour in 2016. Hologram USA says the estates of both celebs are collaborating to make this an “authentic experience,” although it’s not clear exactly what that means.

Transit Directions for Sydney, Australia Going Live in Apple Maps
Several users are reporting seeing transit directions going live for Sydney, Australia in Apple Maps today, adding another major city for the the feature launched as part of iOS 9. Not all users are seeing transit routes for Sydney yet, but support is clearly rolling out at the moment for light rail, commuter rail, buses, and ferry service.
Apple added both Boston and Sydney to its list of supported cities for transit directions early this month, but quickly updated the listing to note coverage would be going live later in the month. Transit information for Boston went live last week alongside support for a number of Amtrak routes in the northeastern United States and nearby areas.
