LG V10 lands tomorrow on AT&T, Wednesday on T-Mobile

LG V10 Hands On-5

Judging by the internet’s reaction, the LG V10 seems to have won quite a fair share of admirers, though perhaps not so many in South Korea. Nonetheless, the time is finally at hand for American consumer to be given direct access to an innovative product with solid features and an even more sound supportive structure. AT&T has announced the V10 will go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday October 27th) and T-Mobile’s online store just a day later, on Wednesday (October 28th). For reference T-Mobile’s physical stores will start selling the phone on Friday, October 30th.

AT&T will carry two color variants, Space Black and Opal Blue, each of which will retail for $249 with a 2-year contract agreement. For customers opting to pay in monthly installments via NEXT, the device can be had for $23.34-$35 per month over the life of the contract depending on how many months you select. For those who purchase early, Ma-Bell will throw in a free 200GB micro SD card, spare battery, and battery charging cradle with the V10 (the latter two typically come as standard inclusions on Korean carrier variants, for reference.)

Note that AT&T says the device will “hit store shelves on November 6th.”

T-Mobile on the other hand, had a rather brief press-release which did not make reference to color variants. The Un-carrier will allow qualifying customers to pay with $0 initially and monthly payments of $25 for customers who opt for it JUMP! On Demand program, which brings the total to just $599 over 24 months.

The LG V10 includes many features and functions, most of which AT&T has specified for easy of reading:

T-Mobile CEO John Legere to send a plane to skywrite above Verizon’s headquarters today

t-mobile-plane

T-Mobile CEO John Legere is pulling some crazy stunts (literally) on Twitter again. He earlier got rid of those hefty overage charges at T-Mobile and started a Change.org petition, asking other carriers to do the same. It received over 330,000 signatures, and carriers have not responded. Obviously Legere’s next step is to send a plane over Verizon’s headquarters in New Jersey to skywrite a message to carriers nationwide.

In 2013 alone, 20 million Americans were hit with $1 billion in overcharge charges from Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T. That’s a staggering number that T-Mobile refuses to be apart of, and is urging its competitors to do the same. That said, T-Mobile is still parading its #AbolishOverages petition across Twitter, and will even be skywriting it atop of Verizon headquarters.

Will this invoke any change from carriers? We’re not certain, but it’s still worth a shot!

LG V10 coming to AT&T on October 27, buyers will get free goodies for a limited time

lg_v10_design_dark

LG announced the V10 late last month, and now it will be coming to AT&T tomorrow, October 27. Users will be able to begin ordering the new device from AT&T’s online store at that point, but not anywhere else, as the device won’t be coming to AT&T’s brick-and-mortar stores until November 6.

If you’re planning on purchasing the device on a two-year contract, it’ll run you $249.99. However, if you choose one of AT&T’s Next installment plans, you can get it for as little as $23.34 per month. And for a limited time, users who order the device will get a complimentary 200GB microSD card, an extra battery, and an extra battery charging cradle. For more information on getting those extra goodies, you can head on over to LG’s V10 promotional website.

As a quick refresher, here’s the V10’s spec sheet:

LG’s dual-screen V10 phone reaches AT&T and T-Mobile this week

LG V10

When LG promised that its unique V10 smartphone would reach the US soon after its Korean launch, it wasn’t kidding around. Both AT&T and T-Mobile have announced that you can order the dual screen, dual-selfie cam device this week — October 27th and 28th, respectively. The AT&T version comes in black or opal blue, and will cost you either $250 on a two-year contract or $29 per month on a similarly lengthy installment plan. You’ll get a 200GB microSD card, an extra battery and a charging cradle if you order quickly, too. The T-Mobile model doesn’t come with those perks, but it’s potentially cheaper at $25 per month (on a two-year payment plan) or $600 outright. Just be prepared to wait a little while if you insist on trying the V10 in-store. T-Mobile won’t carry it until October 30th, and you’ll be waiting until November 6th to see it at an AT&T shop.

LG temporarily suspends Marshmallow update for the G4

lg_g4_back_straight_TA

After shamelessly bragging that it was the first third-party manufacturer to start rolling out the Android 6.0 update two weeks ago, it looks like LG may now have run into some serious technical difficulties as it has today “temporarily suspended” distribution of Marshmallow for the G4 in Poland.

Unfortunately, no information was given with regards to when the upgrade is scheduled to start making the rounds again, but we can only hope that it will be sooner rather than later. In the meantime, G4 owners all around the world will have to make do with Lollipop for a little while longer.

Google is relying on AI to handle difficult search queries

HILVERSUM, NETHERLANDS - JANUARY 31, 2014: Google is an American multinational corporation specializing in Internet-related serv

You’ve probably heard of PageRank, Google’s original secret sauce for organizing search results quickly and accurately. Now there’s a new, artificial intelligence-powered search technology that’s becoming increasingly important for Google: RankBrain. It’s basically the company’s solution for interpreting the some 15 percent of daily search queries that it’s never seen before. RankBrain works by transforming words into “vectors,” or mathematical entities, which Google’s search engine can use to find similar words or phrases. That allows it to parse unusual search entries like, “What’s the title of the consumer at the highest level of a food chain?” Over the past few months, RankBrain has become the third-most important signal for display search results, out of “hundreds” of signals currently in play, Google senior research scientist Greg Corrado told Bloomberg. It’s also even better at sorting relevant search results than Google’s own search engineers.

T-Mobile starting online orders for the LG V10 on October 28

lg_v10_camera_labeling

T-Mobile announced that it will begin selling the LG V10 this week on October 28, with its brick-and-mortar stores getting it on October 30, almost a week before AT&T will have it available at its retail stores.

However, customers who are on AT&T will have a hard time getting the device if they’re locked into a contract or installment plan already. That’s what is unique about T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand program, allowing its customers to upgrade their device up to three times per year. That said, if you haven’t used your three upgrades already, turning your phone in and upgrading to the LG V10 should be no problem. As a quick refresher, T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand program will let you upgrade at $0 down and just $25 per month.

One of the highlights of the LG V10 is its “always on” secondary display, which will either give users quick access to applications or highlight important information, such as the time, weather, and so on.

Here’s what’s under the hood of the LG V10:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor
  • 5.7-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) IPS Quantum display with a secondary 2.1-inch (160x 1040) IPS Quantum display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 64GB of internal storage with microSD card slot for up to an additional 2TB
  • 16MP rear camera with F1.8 Aperture and OIS 2.0 / 5MP front dual-lens camera
  • 3000mAh removable battery
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
  • 6 x 79.3 x 8.6mm, 192g
  • LTE-A Cat. 6 support

Much of that looks similar to the LG G4. However, LG is hoping that the V10 will be the go-to device for capturing video, as the company included an array of different video options in this device, including manual controls for many video configurations. In fact, LG partnered with a YouTube channel in order to show off just what it’s capable of.

Anyone plan on picking one up October 28 from T-Mobile?

People still don’t value wearables very highly, research finds

huawei watch review aa (27 of 33)

Are wearables the next big thing for smart products or a high-cost segment being forced into the market in lieu of meaningful innovation? It appears that the latter may be closer to the truth at the moment, as Juniper Research has found that very few consumers are interested in expensive wearable gadgets.

From a survey of just over 2,000 smartphone owners in the UK and US, the research found that only 1 in 5 customers are prepared to pay more than $175 (~£115) for any sort of wearable device. This doesn’t bode well for the range of more expensive smartwatches that have hit the market lately, and probably also goes some way to explain the popularity of lower cost sports wearables, such as the FitBit range.

samsung gear s2 review aa (5 of 24)

Starting at $300, the recent Samsung Gear S2 is way above the apparent price ceiling for wearables.

However, this trend is somewhat at odds with the research team’s finding about the ‘coolest’ brands. Both Apple and Samsung, which offer the most expensive wearables on the market, topped the rankings, with over 75 percent of respondents stating that they preferred these two brands. Other Android Wear manufacturers make up the top five, while Pebble and a number of sports brands, which feature lower price tags, are dotted lower down the list. Fashion brands didn’t fare too well either.

‘As well as a more definite use, fitness devices also win on value. They are the least costly wearables in the market, and the only category consistently under $175, which our survey identifies as the price ceiling for most consumers.– Juniper Research Analyst James Moar.

Juniper Research goes on to suggest that the lack of a convincing use-case for smartwatches is reducing the amount of money that consumers are willing to spend. Fitness products, on the other hand, have a clear use. Interestingly, despite common complaints from the tech savvy crowd, poor wearable battery life would only deter around 4 percent of those who responded to the survey.

Of course, this research also suggests that there’s a good portion, some 20 percent, of current smartphone users who are interested in the higher end wearables segment, and perhaps that is enough to spur on additional growth. Samsung and Apple, in particular, don’t seem to be complaining about sales, after all.

You can see the full results from the survey at the source link below. How do your thoughts on the wearables market match up with this research?

Inateck Marsbox: a Bluetooth speaker and more – review

I recently had the opportunity to review another Bluetooth speaker by Inateck called the MercuryBox. Both the MarsBox and the MercuryBox could not be any more different from each other. They are both designed with a different purpose in mind.

MarsBox overview

The MarsBox is designed to be more than a speaker. It’s meant to be a conversation piece as well. It has a unique, modern design and while I love the look of the speaker, I would love to see some other color choices other than red. It’s not that I mind the red, I just think that they are limiting the audience by limiting the speaker to one color.

While the MarsBox is technically portable, it is much larger than the MercuryBox.  It comes in at a litter over 7″ long, 2.5″ thick, and 3″ tall. Not gargantuan by any means, but after using the MercuryBox, it feels like a beast in your hands.

The entire surface is covered with a soft-touch material that gives is a great feel when handling the speaker. Unfortunately, this also makes the speaker a fingerprint magnet.

The speaker has 4 buttons on top. One for answering calls / switching to the FM radio. Another for changing the volume levels / changing tracks / seeking between FM channels. And finally there is a play / pause button. On the back is the power button.

Now you may have noticed that I just mentioned an FM radio. That was not a type-o. There is an actual FM radio built into the speaker. All you need to do is press the call answer button and the speaker will switch to FM mode. Unfortunately, this will also disconnect your Bluetooth connection. So you can only use it for one purpose at a time. While it doesn’t need to be plugged in for the speaker to work, the power cable is designed to act as antennae, so you may need to plug it in while using the FM radio in order to receive your favorite station.

Other features of the MarsBox include:

  • Dual 5-watt drivers
  • Bluetooth 4.0 (fully backward compatible) with a range of up to 33ft/ 10m
  • Alternative 3.5mm audio jack for non-Bluetooth devices
  • Built-in 2200mAh rechargeable Lithium Ion battery offers 10-15 hours of play time
  • Built-in high sensitivity Microphone, hands-free telephone calls
  • Easy pairing and connection to Bluetooth devices without code/PIN

MarsBox setup

This speaker is super simple to setup. First charge the speaker. Once you turn the speaker on, it will automatically be put into discoverable mode. All you need to do is search for devices from your phone and select MarsBox from the list of available devices. Now you’re done. All you need to do is enjoy your music.

MarsBox usage

The sound quality of the  MarsBox is pretty good, but it definitely performs best with the lower to mid range sounds at higher volumes. The higher sounds end up sounding just a little muffled. It’s not really very noticeable except that I was listening to it after the MercuryBox, which performs best at the higher range of the sound spectrum and at lower to mid volume levels. Neither were bad, they both have their own strengths.

The FM radio works pretty well, but I found that it had trouble picking up the weaker radio stations. The ones that did come through sounded great. I found that plugging in the included USB cable only produced marginally better reception, not enough to make a station listenable if it’s not already.

One thing that I really liked was the little pads on the bottom of the speaker. It made the speaker stay in place even on uneven surfaces.

Another nice touch is the color-matched USB and auxiliary cables. They compliment the look of the speaker and they give it higher end look. Like the MercuryBox, the cables are made with a braided nylon and they feel great.

What we liked

  • Styling
  • Bass response
  • FM radio

What could be better

  • More color options
  • Material that wouldn’t attract as many fingerprints
  • Better sound on the higher end of the sound spectrum

3.9 out of 5 stars

Overall this is a great speaker. It’ll look good in your office or on a bookshelf at home and more importantly, it’ll sound good too. The speaker normally sells for $129, but for a limited time you can pick one up on Amazon for the very affordable price of $49.99. So what are you waiting for? Get yours before it the price goes back up.

You can now order the new Apple TV

Apple TV

At last, the next iteration of Apple’s living room set-top box has arrived. Well, almost. The fourth-generation Apple TV is now available to order online, with the first units arriving on October 30th. The base model with 32GB of storage will set you back $149 (£129), or you can pay an extra $50 (£40) for the 64GB version. The biggest addition is arguably the remote, which now comes with a small touchpad for navigation and games. Yep, video games. It’s not a heavyweight console like the PS4 or Xbox One, but you’ll be able to play casual titles like Crossy Road and Harmonix’s Beat Sports. There’s also a much-improved TV interface and Siri-enabled voice commands, should you prefer shouting at the screen to mashing buttons. There’s no 4K support — unlike the latest Amazon and Roku boxes — but in return you’ll be well-prepared for when Apple’s long-awaited TV subscription service arrives.
