FCC will publish telemarketer phone numbers to help you block them

The Federal Communications Commission has said that protecting consumer privacy is one of its biggest priorities, and its latest actions prove just that. The communications bureau is going to publish the phone numbers of telemarketers on a weekly basis in an effort to help you preemptively block those annoying calls saying you’ve won a cruise or some other outlandish claim that might require forking over your credit card info. The idea here is that by releasing these regularly and opening up the data, it’ll help software developers build automated apps and the like for heading the calls off before they happen, and improve tech that already exists. This is a natural extension of June’s ruling regarding carriers blocking spam numbers, and the FCC says it’s still working on a way to extend that to landlines. Want a peek at the first sets of digits? The Verge found the first list.

Twitter CEO and founder gives a third of his stock to employees

“I’d rather have a smaller part of something big than a bigger part of something small.” That’s how Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted about his decision to channel a huge chunk of his own stake in the social network back to the employee stock compensation pool. This would then be available for grants and help ameliorate some of the damage done when the company laid off a chunk of the team just last week. Oh yes, and Twitter plans to announce its quarterly earnings next week.

Facebook is launching Search FYI for searching public content all across the site

Facebook Search FYIFacebook has launched a new tool called Search FYI that indexes every piece of public content on the social media site. This means that when you’re searching Facebook, you’ll able to find posts from your friends and family, as well as public conversations people are having.

Search FYI also offers up personalized suggestions as you type, pretty similar to Google’s approach to web searching. These results are also time sensitive, so you should start seeing relevant news stories to whatever is currently happening. Combine that with the indexed public information, and you’ve got a pretty powerful tool for staying on top of current events and opinions.

You can expect to see the new search tools on Android and the desktop site soon.

Samsung almost bought Fingerprint Cards AB, they make almost all the fingerprint sensors on current smartphones

samsung_galaxy_note_5_home_buttonYears ago, there was a fake story going around that Samsung was going to buy a fingerprint reader company for $650 million. Later, the story was found to be totally false. However, it may have been a huge mistake for Samsung.

Fingerprint Cards AB was the company said to be bought back then, but what are they up to now? Oh nothing much, just making all the fingerprint sensors for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, OnePlus 2, LG V10, plus many new phones coming out.

These fingerprint sensors work really well too. The reason they work so well is because they use technology built by Precise Biometrics, which handle all the fingerprint recognition and matching algorithms.

It’s too bad that fake story about Samsung buying Fingerprint Cards AB didn’t turn out to be true. Samsung would of been in control of almost all the fingerprint sensors on mobile phones today. Instead, Samsung has to buy their sensors from Synaptics.

Nexus 5X gets a decent 7 out of 10 repairability score thanks to modular components

nexus 5xAnother new phone means another iFixit teardown, and this time it’s the Nexus 5X up at bat. Fortunately, it looks like the new, smaller Nexus has gotten a pretty decent repairability score. It’s not perfect, but it means you should be able to do some repairs yourself without having to send it off to Google or replace it.

The Nexus 5X uses very standard screws, so opening it up is very simple. Most of the components are modular, too, so getting things swapped out shouldn’t be a headache. The battery is one of the biggest problems as it’s not immediately accessible, but it’s not impossible to pry out with a little bit of work.

Unfortunately, it looks like LG opted for a fused glass display, which means the glass and LCD will have to be replaced together if either breaks. That drives the price up a bit for replacement parts, but it’s a necessary evil for keeping the device thin.

Overall, iFixit gave the Nexus 5X a 7 out of 10 on its repairability scale. That’s not great, but it’s good.

Microsoft has a quick note taking app called Parchi in the Play Store

Parchi logoMicrosoft’s Garage projects for Android has just added a new app. The new app is called Parchi (pur-chih), which focuses on speed, and makes taking quick notes and lists a lot easier.

It’s not trying to compete with Evernote, but instead is for quick things, like a reminder or to pick up milk. It uses hashtags to make looking for these quick notes much easier later on. They really focused on taking notes as fast as possible, one way is by allowing you to take a quick note right from the lockscreen.

This app is perfect for all those half finished ideas you may have. Just write down anything you might think is a good idea and come back to it later to expand upon it.

Some key features:

  • Text, list and pictures

  • Reminders, Colored notes, Mark as favorite or Pin to lock-screen

  • Quick search through the hamburger, #tags, text and various filters

  • Share notes – Share a single or multiple notes over WhatsApp, Email, SMS, or any other app of your choice

Best Nexus 6P cases

The Nexus 6P is one of the most anticipated phones of 2015. Featuring a big 5.7-inch Quad HD display, super loud front-facing speakers, Android 6.0 Marshmallow and an all-metal unibody design, this high-end Nexus phone is certainly an attractive device. Just because it’s made mostly of metal, though, that doesn’t mean the device is impervious to bumps and scratches. Thankfully, that’s where a good case can come in.

We’ve rounded up some of the best cases you can buy for the Nexus 6P and listed them below in no particular order. It should also be noted that since the Nexus 6P just came out, not many cases are available for the device at the moment. We’ve listed the release dates for each case and attached Amazon links as well, so you can get your hands on these accessories the day they become available.

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 3.02.22 PM

If you don’t mind paying a little extra money for official accessories, this Adopted Stylish case might be the one for you. Adopted Protective Case

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 3.04.20 PM

If you’re looking for a basic, no frills case for your Nexus 6P, Adopted’s Protective case could certainly fit the bill. This case is available in two colors: Carbon, Clear Frost. There may not be any fancy features here, but you do get a solid case that helps protect your Nexus 6P from drops, scrapes and scratches. Pricing isn’t on the lowest spectrum, but $20 isn’t a bad asking price by any means.

Buy now from the Google Store

Verus High Pro Shield Case

71WpVLZDXeL._SL1500_

The Verus High Pro Shield case offers tons of protection and doesn’t sacrifice looks in any way. It’s made of high-grade TPU and polycarbonate and features a TPU lip to protect the device from short drops and scratches. In my opinion this is one of the more attractive cases on this list, thanks to the brushed-metal look on the back of the case. It’s available now in five different color options for only $16.99.

Buy now from Amazon

TUDIA Ultra Slim Case

71HMGVdslhL._SL1200_

The TUDIA Ultra Slim case is a pretty simple looking case, though it is still a reasonably attractive one at that. It’s made of a high-quality TPU material and gives the case a nice soft touch feel. Although it likely won’t protect the phone from drops, it can stop your Nexus 6P from getting scratched or bruised. You can get the TUDIA Ultra Slim in your choice of Black, Blue, Gray or Purple for only $7.99.

Buy now from Amazon

Note: This case will be in stock October 30th.

If you’re a fan of wallet cases, you can’t go wrong with the Tauri Luxury Wallet Leather case. It features three built-in credit card pockets and and extra pocket for carrying money. You can also use the cover as a kickstand if you’d like to watch movies or YouTube videos at your desk. It’s not the most protective case out there, but it will protect your Nexus 6P from dust, dirt and small bumps and bruises. The Tauri Luxury Wallet Leather case is available now in Black, Hot Pink, Purple and Mint for just $9.99.

Buy now from Amazon

MoKo Hard Bumper Case

71HeC+P3UbL._SL1500_

Last but not least we have MoKo’s Hard Bumper case for the Nexus 6P. It’s made of a hard polycarbonate and features a silicon inner layer to protect against scratches, bumps, bruises and drops. The design isn’t anything special, but we think the price makes up for it. This case will be available soon in five different color options starting at just $3.59.

Bike Unchained is Red Bull’s latest attempt to bring high octane, extreme sports action to mobile

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

If I didn’t sit on a chair for over 12 hours a day, I would totally want to be out doing extreme sports – but seeing as I’m just going to keep sitting here, Red Bull‘s latest game about extreme mountain biking, Bike Unchained, might just do the trick instead. In a game that’s very much in the style of Trials Fusion with more 3D elements, Bike Unchained (which I feel is an unusual name for a game that is wholly dependant on your bike staying chained – it does sound cool though) sees you racing down mountains at breakneck speed, performing tricks of perilous jumps presumably to gain style points. Check out a trailer of the game in action:

The game features 60 different tracks set in three locations around the world, including Whistler, the Alps and Japan – with the promise of more additions in the future. Bike Unchained is available for free right now, however there are a number of minimum requirements you’ll have to consider before you play:

  • Minimum requirement: 1GB Ram
  • Minimum Android OS: 4.1 or newer
  • Minimum screen resolution: 800×480

If Bike Unchained sounds the extreme kind of gaming you want to be doing, we have the Play Store link for you below:

Play Store redesign has started to roll out

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

A week ago, the highly anticipated Play Store redesign was teased to us, showing us an all new interface, with lots of new sliding menus for us to enjoy. It’s now being reported that the redesign has started rolling out, though note that even if you have the latest version of the Play Store, you may not necessarily get the update straight away. We’ve been advised that you can try to force the update by clearing the cache of the Play Store app, but no promises.

Play Store redesign

Introduction to the redesigned Google Play Store

For those of you who missed the previous sneak peek of the Play Store redesign, you’ll be pretty surprised how much of it has changed, with a completely revamped design, featuring large featured cards at the top of stores and sliding menus for each category. Hopefully we can get our hands on it soon and see if there’s anything new and cool hidden in its layers, but till then, we’re in the same boat as you.

Google adds Android Wear watch icon to Play Store

play_store_wear_03

Google is making it a little bit easier for owners of Android Wear smartwatches find apps that are compatible with their devices. Users will now find a small watch icon present on app listings when an app is compatible with Android Wear just above the “Read More” link. The indicator is only present in the mobile app.

Along with the watch icon that displays on the main page for an app, if a user opens the expanded information and scrolls to the bottom, they will find an indicator that the app has been enhanced to work with Android Wear.

Thus far the addition of the watch icon is only showing up in listings on the mobile app. Users accessing the Play Store via the web browser on their computer get no indicator. The icon’s presence is not entirely consistent either as some have noted some apps, most conspicuously Google’s own apps like Keep or Hangouts, do not display the icon even though they do work with Android Wear.
