LG V10 off to mediocre start in South Korea

LG’s new V10 super-flagship packs many promising and unique features, but those don’t appear to be helping the handset strike the right chord with consumers. The V10 is apparently off to a slow start in its home country of South Korea and analysts are not confident about the phone’s future prospects.
According to data from market research firm ATLAS Research & Consulting, the LG V10 failed to break into the top 10 list of domestic smartphone sales during its first week of release, which is used as an indicator of consumer interest in a handset. The V10 only placed 15th between October 8th and 14th, while it was Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 that claimed the top spot. Other Samsung handsets, including the Galaxy S6, Grand Max and the mid-range Galaxy A5 also took places within the top 10.
LG has already dropped the price of its V10 to 700,000 won (US$615), but has only managed to keep pace with the falling costs of the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6, which are available at virtually the same price point. The company is also suffering from the effects of low cost competitors, who are offering high-end specifications at a lower price point than LG.
Closer look at the V10:

LG had been banking on its V10 to pick up its dwindling high-end smartphone sales this year. The company’s flagship LG G4, which launched earlier in the year, also underperformed following its launch in South Korea and LG’s earning expectations for the year have been cut by analysts as a result. LG has also slipped out of the top 5 list of global smartphone manufacturers in the last quarter, as lower cost brands like Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi continue to snap up market share.
Perhaps the LG V10 will find more success when it arrives in other markets?
Samsung could launch two different sized versions of the Galaxy S7 edge simultaneously next year
We might still only be in October, but is it ever too early for rumours about Samsung’s next big thing? In this case, it’s the next edition of the Korean company’s S series of handsets, which is logically believed to carry the S7 moniker. While previous rumours have speculated on when the S7 will be unveiled, or which processor, USB port, and camera sensor it will feature, today’s rumour intimates that Samsung could launch two Galaxy S7 edge versions simultaneously.
According to SamsungViet, Samsung could launch two variants of the Galaxy S7 edge at the same time, and while both would naturally feature curved displays, they would each be of a different size of, say, for example, 5.2-inch (S7 edge) and a 5.7-inch (S7 edge+). There may also be a regular S7 handset with a flat display. Which means it’s entirely possible that 3 different variants of the Galaxy S7 could exist. Although it’s just as possible that Samsung will discard one of the variants before the big announcement.
It might not make current Galaxy S6 edge+ owners very happy, seeing a new version of their handset being released so soon, but it makes some sense when you consider it will allow the Note 6 to have it’s own space when it inevitably launches later on in 2016.
This is Samsung, so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether it will come to fruition. Does it make sense to you?

Pandora signs $90 million truce with the recording industry
Thanks to a quirk of copyright law, songs recorded before February 15th, 1972 weren’t covered at the federal level. It’s a loophole of sorts that Pandora, amongst others, has exploited to play classic pre-1972 tracks without paying a cent to the record labels. Or, at least, that was the case, since the firm has just signed a deal with the RIAA that’ll see it pay $90 million to get the record industry to stop hassling it in the courts for unpaid royalties. It’s the second big deal of its kind to land in the last few months, with Sirius XM paying $210 million in a similar deal back in June. It’s probably not worth mentioning that the RIAA is scoring another own-goal, since services like Pandora are good for music sales, is it.
New Horizons parts Pluto with a shot of its puniest moon
NASA’s New Horizon’s spacecraft has done yeoman’s work at Pluto, having taken stunning images of the ex-planet and its major moon Charon. Now it’s taking off for the largely unseen Kuiper belt, but it grabbed one last image of the tiny moon Kerberos before leaving. It turns out that the body is smaller than thought at around 8 miles across, and consists of two distinctive “lobes.” Much like Comet 67P orbited by the ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft, the unusual shape of Kerberos may be the result of a collision between two smaller objects. Like Pluto’s other small moons, and several spots on the quasi-planet itself, it’s also coated with “relatively clean water ice,” making it highly reflective.

Use Tribeway to share your favorite moments in life (App Review)
With a plethora of social networks that are cropping up everyday, and those that have already found the graveyard, it’s a tough field to get into nowadays. In order to make a name for yourself, you need to do something that is different than the norm, or make sharing your social status easier than what’s already available. With Tribeway, this is somewhat of a different take on social networks. From the “Trails”, to built-in messaging, Tribeway is one of those alternative options out there.
Setup
Tribeway is a social media platform that offers a different experience for sharing your favorite moments, and chatting with your friends. In order to get started, you’ll need to head over to the Play Store and download it for free. Once you’ve opened it up, you’ll need to sign up with either a Facebook or Google+ account. A little redundant, but necessary nonetheless.
After your account is set up, you’ll more than likely want to test the waters to see if any of your other friends have signed up with Tribeway. To do this, hit the Friends tab, and ‘Add Friends’. Chances are, you’re the lone wolf here, but there are some recommendations for folks you can follow. If you want to invite some of your friends to try out Tribeway with you, there is an option to invite as many people as you’d like, and it will invite them through Facebook or Google+, depending upon what you used to sign up with.
Once you’ve got your account set up, and your friends invited, you’ll want to head over to the main screen. From here, you’ll see a few tabs, a few other buttons as well. What you are presented with, is called “Trails” and is essentially your news feed. Here is where folks you follow can post groups of images and videos, and you can react to those with a thumbs-up, comment, or you can “Boost the post, which will make the post appear on your trails for all of your friends.
Usage
In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, you’ll find a Floating Action Button(FAB), which takes you into your friends panel. From here you can select friends to share your trails with, as well picking which images you would like to have posted. Posting a trail is actually a bit tedious.
In order to post a trail, you’ll need to hit that FAB, and once you select the images, you’ll need to create choose a cover image. Now, in order to even post the trail, you’ll need to sign in with your Google account, so that you can attach your Google Drive account. We aren’t exactly sure why this is the case, however, it’s just another step that needs to be taken for posting simple images.
There are a lot of steps that need to be taken just to post a simple Trail, so it’s a little off-putting, but once you get used to the process, it’s just a matter of tapping a few times. Not as fast as Instagram or Facebook, but hey, it’s another way to share your favorite images with folks on the interwebs.
Tribeway also includes the ability to chat and/or call your contacts. It’s like having Facebook Messenger built into the Facebook app again. Simply tap a contact, and open up the conversation. There’s no cost associated with the messaging service, so this is another alternative to something like Telegram or WhatsApp.
What We Like
- Easy to navigate interface
- Trails are laid out in an attractive fashion
- Messaging is built-in and doesn’t require any extra downloads
And Not So Much
- Too many taps to share a single image
- Not many people using Tribeway
- Doesn’t do anything that isn’t already available elsewhere
Overall, Tribeway is just another social network, and although it’s not as intuitive as others, Tribeway may be something worth considering. If you’re tired of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Google+, and want to give something else a shot, Tribeway is deserving of a look or two. However, remember that you can’t sign up without a Google+ or Facebook account, and chances are, none of your friends are on there. So you’ll need to invite them before anything else.
If you’re interested in Tribeway, drop us a line and let us know. We love connecting with our readers, so let us know if you’re using it, and we’ll definitely do some connecting.

Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch arrives in the UK on November 12th
The Gear S2 is one of Samsung’s best smartwatches to date, combining a sleek design and a unique rotating bezel for navigation. The Tizen timepiece has its flaws — the app selection is a little sparse, for instance — but it’s an intriguing device that’s now headed for the UK. From November 12th you can pick up the standard model for £249, which comes with a dark grey or silver case. Alternatively, you can pay an extra £50 for the snazzier Gear S2 Classic, which features a notched bezel and a dressier leather strap. For comparison, the second-gen Moto 360 starts from £229 and the Apple Watch Sport begins at £299. If you’re already sold, you can pre-order it online from October 29th — and if you’re unsure how it’ll look on your wrist, you can always try it on using augmented reality.

SwiftKey’s new Beta 6.0 has dual-word predictive goodness

October is turning out to be a good month for SwiftKey users. Just a couple of weeks ago we were given the opportunity to enjoy early access to neural networks, and now the company has updated its standard keyboard app to Beta 6.0 on the Google Play Store. The build is billed as the “biggest bundle of new features and improvements…since making SwiftKey free for everyone last year” and includes:
• Double-Word Prediction adds a new dimension to the predictions you see, helping you type faster than ever.
• The settings menu has been rebuilt from the ground up to make sure you can find settings and fine tune your experience. Inserting emoji is now faster, smoother and more intuitive.
• Carbon Light is another free theme that’s a distinctively SwiftKey flavor of Google’s Material Design approach.

The double-word predictive input will no doubt appeal to users, and the company has the following to say about it on its official blog:
For the first time, we’ve taken SwiftKey’s mind-reading accuracy to the next level with the introduction of Double-Word Prediction. SwiftKey will now predict the next two words you’re likely to type at the same time, resulting in a much faster (up to 2x) experience for you than ever before. In true SwiftKey style, the Double-Word Prediction feature will continue to capture the phrases that matter most to you to truly embody your personal writing style.
The feature is a seamless new addition to the app and you won’t need to do anything beyond look out for the two word display in your usual prediction bar – applicable in every single language (over 100!) we support in our library.
Please be aware that the Beta might not work perfectly with every Android device, and that given its pre-release state, bugs or other glitches may be present.
You can download SwiftKey Beta 6.0 from the Google Play Store here:

Google teams up with General Assembly to accelerate your Android developer career

Want to become an Android developer? This might be your opportunity.
General Assembly has partnered up with Google to build an “Android Development Immersive program” that seeks to train participants in coding, design, and iteration skills. The creators of the program are calling it a “career accelerator,” and they’re looking to give new developers the tools they need to succeed in the growing field of app development.
The course is 12 weeks of full-time work, and with a financeable $13,500 price tag, it’s definitely a big investment.
However, General Assembly claims that they will be boasting an alumni force over 25,000 members strong by the end of 2015 and that they expect to only grow larger in coming years. As with any career, making it in the software development world is as much about who you know as what you know, so becoming a part of this growing network of professionals is a pretty significant benefit for General Assembly to tout.
There’s far more than just networking to this opportunity, however. The program features professional Android developers as mentors, and participants will build real apps to develop user interface fundamentals, material design, and Java skills. Students will receive assistance finding a job after the course with the help of career coaches as well.
General Assembly is a startup company focusing on education. They just succeeded in raising $70 million in funds for their projects, and they’ve recently partnered with Google to improve this Android development course.
The future is in apps. Nobody is really debating this. We’ve only become more attached to our mobile devices over the last decade, and solid app design can make or break a company. If you’re looking to establish this field a part of your personal future, head over to Android Development Immersive site and request a copy of a the syllabus.
Who knows? This could be what kicks off your career. Or it could be a total waste of $13K. What a participant gets out of something like this usually correlates to how much effort they put into it. Nobody’s going to just hand you a career for a few thousand dollars, after all. Ask any college grad with a Liberal Arts degree.
What do you think? Solid investment or waste of time? Let us know in the comments.
