Today, Google released a new version of Chrome Beta that includes support for splash screens, desktop notification management, cooperative multitasking and various other security fixes. The update applies for Android, Chrome OS, Linux, Mac and Windows.

The new update brings splash screens for Android. Google has already implemented this feature it its native apps, such as Maps, YouTube etc. The feature is now available for web apps when a website is launched from an Android home screen shortcut. This allows to immediately show valuable information as the apps load in the background. Developers have the option of customizing the splash screen by setting a name, icon, background/notification bar color for the web app.

Another feature that Chrome 47 brings is easier management of desktop notifications. Sites that generate a lot of push notifications can take up a lot of screen space, and the update cleans up the experience by allowing developers to set up an automatic dismissal of desktop notifications, and chose whether or not a notification should remain onscreen until the user dismisses it.

Cooperative multitasking basically allows for a smoother user experience within web apps. This is achieved by allowing developers to set work to run during idle time using a new function (requestIdleCallback) that the update brings. This means that operations won’t only be processed when the user is interacting with the web app, allowing to run operations in the background so the web app is ready beforehand. This allows to achieve 60 frames per second animations within web apps without decreasing the performance of the app.
