Droid Turbo 2 to have up to 48 hours of battery life, shatterproof display, leaked info sheet says

droid-turbo-2-leaked-info-sheet

Everyone is looking forward to the Droid Turbo 2, which is expected to launch at Motorola and Verizon’s October 27 event. The event is just a few days away, but in the meantime, a Verizon info sheet has leaked revealing some of the specifications of the Droid Turbo 2.

According to the info sheet obtained by Android Central, the teased Droid Turbo 2 will sport a shatterproof display, up to 48 hours of battery life, a 13 hour charge in just 15 minutes, a 21-megapixel rear camera, a wide angle 5-megapixel selfie camera, and microSD support up to 2TB.

Probably the most notable specification is the claimed 48 hours of battery life, which is something fairly similar we’ve seen in the Moto X Play. As per the norm, it’s a wise thing to take these leaks with a hefty grain of salt, as nothing has been made official yet. All will be revealed on October 27, and we’ll no doubt see even more leaks of this type as we get closer to the event.

Plenty of promotional materials have already leaked showing details of other Droid devices expected to be announced at Motorola’s event.

Any Verizon customers getting excited for the Droid Turbo 2?

Huawei jumps ahead of Xiaomi in China according to new analysis

huawei_logo_june2015_event_TA

New analysis, including a look at the numbers by research company Canalys, indicates Huawei has jumped ahead of Xiaomi as the number 1 smartphone manufacturer in China. The two companies have been trading the top spot for some time now. According to the sales and market share numbers that were analyzed, Huawei reportedly saw shipments grow 81% year over year for the third quarter of 2015. At the same time, Xiaomi saw their shipments decline.

For 2015, Xiaomi set a target of selling 80 million devices. For the first half of the year, they sold around 35 million units, so they need a big second half of 2015. The release of the Mi 5 smartphone and how well it fares will play a big factor in whether they can make it. Meanwhile, Huawei may unveil their Mate 8 device before the end of the year to get their own bump. Although Xiaomi and Huawei have been dominating the Chinese manufacturer race, they will continue to keep their eyes on companies like ZTE, LeTV, and Meizu that hope to eventually rise to the top.

Instagram’s new Boomerang app lets you make 1-second video loops

Popular photo sharing service Instagram has just launched a new standalone application called Boomerang. It’s a very simple app that serves only one purpose – to help you make short, 1-second long videos that loop back and forth. Instead of the app actually taking a video, though, Boomerang takes a burst of five photos and turns them into a silent video.

Once you open the app, you’ll be presented with a single shutter button and a button for flipping your camera around. Hold down the shutter button, and Boomerang will take five quick photos and paste them together in just a few seconds. You’ll then be presented with a sharing screen, which will let you quickly share to Instagram, Facebook or any other app you’d like. Boomerang will save each clip as a 4-second video loop to your device’s gallery, looping the clips back and forth a few times so it can be watched on its own.

Instagram has been going through quite a few changes as of late, with the photo sharing service recently adding the ability to share both portrait and landscape photos. Instagram also recently upped its photo sharing size to 1080 x 1080, which was a change most users have been wanting for some time.

Boomerang is now available for free in the Google Play Store, so head to the link below if you’re interested.

HTC executive is not amused: “It’s Apple that copies us.”

htc one a9 first impressions aa (10 of 45)

When HTC announced the A9 this week, some felt a strange twinge of déjà-vu: how could this familiar metal clad phone actually be “brand new?” Indeed allegations of copy-cat craftsmanship had been circulating for weeks now. After the official unveiling however, a much more vocal claim has been made, HTC it seems, is not very amused by the coarse commentary and spoke out about such similarities.

Jack Tong, President of HTC North Asia, had the following to say at a press event held today for the Taiwanese launch of the new phone:

“We’re not copying. We made a uni-body metal-clad phone in 2013. It’s Apple that copies us in terms of the antenna design on the back.”

The 2013 device in-question, for those wondering, was none other than the HTC One (M7), which truly turned heads at the time for making liberal use of metal in a time when everyone else was pushing plastic or gushing over glass.

Mr. Tong continued, stating that:

“The A9 is made thinner and more lightweight than our previous metal-clad phones. This is a change and evolution, and we’re not copying.”

First come, fast forgotten

The Verge Apple HTC A9 The Verge

The current accusations that HTC faces are hardly new in the mobile space. Apple – thanks to its high brand awareness and solid sales – occupies a pioneering place in the minds of the mainstream. For the vast majority of the world’s population, the iPhone was the first smartphone, and the iPad the first tablet. Seemingly everything these two products entail were all done by Apple first, a misconception that is only furthered by the company’s finely crafted marketing and liberal use of adjectives.

To all those who got there first however, their achievements are essentially forgotten. Numerous tablets were made running Windows XP, for example. Japan had NFC and even fingerprint readers over a decade ago. PDAs were basically prototype smartphones. Touch screens were first described in 1965. The whole situation is not unlike that which Nintendo enjoyed when it “invented” motion sensing (Wii), for example.

Line-up: Both the HTC One M7 (right) and One M8 (left) released before the iPhone 6 was ever announced.

While it’s quite easy to see the similarities between the HTC A9 and the Apple iPhone 6S, it’s also quite easy to see the similarities between the Apple iPhone 6 and the HTC One M7. Yet, because the public became aware of metal bodies and antenna lines through Apple’s design language, it makes sense that some individuals would have a gut reaction of a copy-cat crisis. The same has already been made about the Lenovo PHAB Plus, for example.

Privy to Preparedness

Aside from the strong words issued by Mr. Tong, a new leak provides some insight into the way the company is seeking to educate its staff about the claimed copying:

one-a9-training-slide

The slide is quite direct in what it states, and serves to reiterate the talking points mentioned earlier today in Taiwan.

A cross-licensing misconception

Around the time Apple and Samsung were waging war in a California courtroom, the Cupertino-based company entered into a cross-licensing agreement with HTC. Although the actual terms of deal are unknown, under the agreement, HTC is free to use the following technologies and UI elements on smartphones during the decade, among others:

  • Slide to unlock
  • Universal search
  • Bounce scrolling
  • Scroll locking

Nowhere was it specifically mentioned that HTC is given a green-light to copy Apple’s product designs however, and indeed this may be why the company has yet to sue the Taiwanese-based OEM on hardware design-related matters. It is thus erroneous to assume HTC is somehow “within its rights” to clone the iPhone and Apple would literally have to look the other way.

What’s to come

Lenovo-Phab-Plus-Hands-On-AA-(7-of-18)

Lenovo has already been accused by some for “cloning” the iPhone.

Given that the HTC A9 was just announced, we won’t know how sales fare for some time. The device has certainly managed to pique the interest of those in the market for a mid-range product, and has definitely got people talking. Perhaps HTC could ask for nothing more, as this makes for an enormous amount of free press, the likes of which would otherwise cost exorbitant sums of money to generate.

It remains to be seen as to what Apple ultimately has to say about the device, if anything at all. If the company should take a critical opinion of the design, it would be an almost hypocritical statement given the iPhone 6’s similarities to the M7. In many ways, this new issue represents a very critical look at what Tim Cook’s Apple will do, as opposed to what Steve Job’s Apple already did.

Perhaps one thing that is a bit more certain, is that HTC will seek to focus on this new design language in the future, with Mr. Tong indicating it will be carried over to the M-series as well as the Desire line.

Fleksy introduces a built-in option for themeing your keyboard

There are plenty of keyboard options available on the Play Store. From Swype and Swiftkey, to Google’s own keyboard, however there’s only a limited amount of customizing that can be done. Usually we are just stuck using the built-in themes, and anything that may be added to the “Theme Store” later on.

Fleksy released an update today bringing more customization to your fingertips, than ever before. Now, instead of being stuck with just the built-in themes, and anything that gets released with an update, you can customize the look of the Fleksy Keyboard all the way through.

Fleksy Customization

Within the Fleksy Dashboard, you can head into the Theme Builder, and start creating your own theme that fits your style and personality. The background image can be chosen, meaning that you can find a picture that you love, and use that as your background picture for your keyboard. Then you can choose the colors of the keys, the color of the “key pop”, autocorrected word, and suggestion words.

Fleksy Customization 2

Fleksy really is allowing everything to be customized within the Theme Builder. This may not matter to some, but for those of us who love to customize, this is a great addition. Being stuck with the stock themes can be annoying, because you may like a color scheme, but want to tinker with just a few things, and now you can.

Fleksy burst onto the scene back in 2013, and has become an extremely popular option in the Android world. Eventually, Fleksy took its talents to iOS, although there is still more functionality built in to the Android version. And for a fun little tidbit, back in 2014, the world texting speed record was broken by a teenager using Fleksy.

Fleksy does take some getting used to, due to the various gestures and lack of swipe-texting, but once you’ve got it under control, everything becomes second nature. Fleksy is a great option for anyone looking to try out some new keyboards, and this Theme Builder just adds to how awesome Fleksy is.

HTC One A9 design to extend to future products, such as the M Series

The HTC One A9 was not greeted with the most welcoming reception following its debut a couple days ago. While it appears to be a solidly built mid-ranger, its strikingly close resemblance to the iPhone just sticks out like a sore thumb.

One thing that was certainly on my mind was if this new design language would be carried over to the One M series devices (the M10 is expected in the Spring), or if the A9 is just something HTC is trying out. Unfortunately for folks who aren’t a fan of the new direction, it appears the former is the reality.

Reported via Focus Taiwan, HTC made a statement regarding its plan moving forward from the A9.

Starting with the One A9, our design language will enter a different and fashionable phase

Jack Tong, president of HTC North Asia

HTC sees the design change in the A9 as a “milestone”. The report goes on to say that, “HTC will extend the new design of the One A9 to the company’s premium M series and affordable Desire family,”.

So there you have it. Love it or hate it, HTC is betting its future on this foundation. Hopefully the company has some good “different and fashionable” ideas up its sleeves to differentiate upcoming devices and sidestep further criticism of the all too familiar design.

Let us know how you feel about HTC’s new direction.

Griffin Launches New Combination Apple Watch and iPhone Charging Station

Third-party accessory manufacturer Griffin today announced a new combination Apple Watch and iPhone charging stand called the “WatchStand Powered Charging Station.” The dock takes the original design of the company’s WatchStand dock and adds on a new section that acts as a landing pad to charge an iPhone or iPad next to the Apple Watch.

griffin watchstand 2
The new version of the WatchStand comes with a built-in power supply and two dedicated USB charging ports so the cable clutter is visually reduced trailing out from the back of the dock. The WatchStand’s underside provides multiple cable management opportunities to ensure that the cords for the Apple Watch and iPhone don’t become unruly when both are placed on the stand.

griffin new watchstand
Just as with the original WatchStand, the new version supports all bands for the Apple Watch and can even adapt to horizontal and vertical positions, giving users the option to try out new WatchOS 2 features like Nightstand mode. The base of the WatchStand lets users place their iPhone either on the top of a flat, felt surface or angled against the piece that holds up the Apple Watch, to watch videos while the iPhone charges.

The WatchStand Powered Charging Station is available to purchase from Griffin’s official website for $59.99 starting today.

New Study Finds Siri More Distracting Than Google Now While Driving

Siri and other voice-activated systems can cause potentially unsafe mental distractions lasting several seconds while driving, according to a new research study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Siri’s score of 3.4 on the five-point scale is considered more distracting than Google Now’s 3.0 score, but less distracting than Microsoft Cortana, which received a 3.8 rating.

AAA-Mental-Distraction-Rankings
AAA’s mental distraction rankings also included vehicles, ranging from the least distracting Chevy Equinox at 2.4 to the Mazda 6 at 4.6, which is nearly the highest level of cognitive distraction. The study found that mental distractions can persist for as long as 27 seconds after using hands-free or voice-activated systems, as drivers readjust to the task of driving.

“The lasting effects of mental distraction pose a hidden and pervasive danger that would likely come as a surprise to most drivers,” said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “The results indicate that motorists could miss stop signs, pedestrians and other vehicles while the mind is readjusting to the task of driving.”

Researchers found that potentially unsafe levels of mental distraction can last for as long as 27 seconds after completing a distracting task in the worst-performing systems studied. At the 25 MPH speed limit in the study, drivers traveled the length of nearly three football fields during this time. When using the least distracting systems, drivers remained impaired for more than 15 seconds after completing a task.

AAA’s mental distraction rankings while driving are broken down into five categories:

Category 1: About the same as listening to the radio or an audio book
Category 2: About the same as talking on the phone
Category 3: Equivalent to sending voice-activated texts on an error-free system
Category 4: About the same as uploading social media
Category 5: Highly challenging, scientific test designed to overload a driver’s attention

The study did not include the latest in-dash systems such as CarPlay or Android Auto.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety published Phase I and Phase II of this study over the past few years. In the second phase, the foundation found Siri’s high complexity and low intuitiveness resulted in some of the highest levels of mental distraction compared to other in-car tasks such as adjusting the radio or navigating complex menus.
