Custom Marshmallow ROMs in development for Nexus 7 (2012) and Galaxy Nexus

Unfortunately, not all the devices in the Nexus line-up have made the cut for an official Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, but the developer community is already hard at work to bring Marshmallow to the older Nexus 7 (2012) tablet and Galaxy Nexus smartphone.
Starting with the Nexus 7, Dmitry Grinberg, the same developer who recently pushed out a Marshmallow ROM for the Nexus 4, has uploaded a working AOSP ROM, although you’ll have to find a GAPPS package yourself. Everything appears to be working correctly, or at least not major bugs are listed, although the build is for the WiFi only version of the tablet, at least for now.
You can grab the package to make the build yourself, or download a flashable image or zip file from his website via this link.

Galaxy Nexus owners can thank XDA Forum user Ziyan for an experimental Marshmallow build that is currently in development. There appear to be a few bugs here, as the build is in the early stages. Video recordings crash and NFC is not working, and the developer doesn’t recommend it as a daily driver just yet.
If you’re the adventurous type, you can grab the experiment flashable zip file from the download page here. Installation instructions and build notes can be found under the discussions tab.
Mophie launches 2,500mAh battery case for the Note 5

Samsung used to be known for adding removable batteries into its devices but with this year’s Galaxy Note 5, the company followed the design of the Galaxy S6 and left out the removable back cover and accessible battery. In doing so, the company removed a feature that plenty of people used but as we covered in our Galaxy Note 5 review, the battery life isn’t actually that bad.

For those that think the 3000 mAh battery isn’t large enough to last a whole days’ usage, popular accessory maker Mophie has just expanded its range of battery pack cases with the addition of a new slim-line case, designed just for the Galaxy Note 5. The case comes with a 2,500 mAh quick-charge enabled battery that promises up to 13 hours additional talk time, 8 hours web browsing or 9 hours video playback.
The case is lightweight and features pass-through volume and power buttons, while also keeping the S-Pen accessible. However, at a cost of $99, it’s certainly not the cheapest power solution on the market, but will be ideal for those who love Mophie products. If a case with a built-in battery isn’t for you, Samsung also offers its own range of external battery packs, while there are plenty of third-party quick-charge enabled chargers available to buy as well.
Would you buy this Galaxy Note 5 case? Do you prefer a portable battery pack or a case with a battery built in? Let us know your views guys!
Lenovo’s Vibe P1 and P1m handsets to launch in India on October 21st with huge batteries in tow
Some manufacturers follow the strategy of slimming down the handset’s battery to make the device as thin as possible, often, seemingly, to the detriment of the user experience. Lenovo is bucking that trend, though, with its Vibe P1 and Vibe P1m handsets sporting batteries with capacities of 5,000mAh and 4,000mAh respectively. According to a media invite sent out earlier, Lenovo is launching both handsets in India on October 21st.
Let’s take a look at the larger of the two handsets first, the Vibe P1. Lenovo has bundled in features such as Rocket Charge, which seems to be very much like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology, delivering 2.8 hours of talk-time for just 5 minutes of charge. There’s also a physical switch that enables the OneKey Power Saver function, extending battery life. The Vibe P1 will launch in India for around Rs. 17,500 ($270) on October 21st.

- Weight: 189 grams
- Available in Platinum or Graphite Grey.
On to the mini version of the Vibe P1, if you will, the 5-inch Vibe P1m, and here we see a more budget-friendly offering from Lenovo. The Vibe P1m doesn’t have NFC connectivity, bit it does apparently have a nano-coating to help it withstand accidental spills, as well the physical OneKey Power Saver switch, which helps extend battery life. Check out the rest of the specifications below.
- Android 5.1 lollipop with Vibe UI
- 5-Inch IPS display with 1280 x 720 resolution
- MediaTek MT6735P quad-core processor @ 1.0GHz
- 2GB RAM

The Vibe P1m will launch in India on October 21st, with a price tag of around Rs. 10,000 ($154). What do you think of Lenovo’s Vibe P1 and P1m handsets? Have they been priced keenly enough for India’s congested smartphone market?

Feds launch fantasy sports probe due to insider trading scandal
In addition to fighting a class-action lawsuit accusing them of fraud, fantasy sports websites DraftKings and FanDuel now have to face scrutiny from the FBI. According to The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, feds have been getting in touch with prominent fantasy sports players to ask about their experiences playing on either website. If you recall, both companies are currently embroiled in a scandal after a DraftKings employee leaked data not typically available before the games begin. The same employee was discovered to have won $350,000 within the same week playing on rival website FanDuel. NYT found out soon after that it’s not an isolated case: both companies’ employees have been raking in big money playing on each other’s websites. That gave rise to allegations that they win big by taking advantage of insider info they have access to.
The feds are reportedly looking into whether the websites are preying on their customers, seeing as they have to pay entry fees and are dealing with real cash. That’s not all the authorities are investigating, though — because of what happened, they’re now also looking into the legality of daily fantasy sites. The WSJ says the Justice Department is now investigating whether they can be considered gambling sites, and hence should be regulated under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. FanDuel insists, however, that daily fantasy is a game of skill, not luck, and should continue being excluded from the internet gambling act.

Samsung launching two new Galaxy Note 5 colours

Samsung is known for reinvigorating its smartphone line with new colours after launch and while it didn’t do so for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, the company has today introduced two new colours for its Galaxy Note 5 phablet in South Korea.
Customers in Samsung’s home market will now be able to buy the Galaxy Note 5 in Silver Titanium or Pink Gold, which adds to the existing colour schemes (Black Sapphire, Peal White and Platinum Gold). At the launch of the Note 5, Samsung showed off the Titanium Silver Galaxy Note 5 but this wasn’t released to the market and presumably, this is the same colour scheme that has just been launched in South Korea.

The Pink Gold Note 5 looks to be an answer to the increase in pink-clad smartphones and, at least based on the press image, it looks to be quite a deep pink colour. As we covered in our Galaxy Note 5 colour comparison, the silver titanium definitely looks to be the best handset if you’d like the rear of the handset to double up as a mirror but of course, the Black and white colours are much better at hiding any fingerprints.
How much will the new Galaxy Note 5 colours cost you? The Silver Titanium will be available with either 32GB or 64GB internal storage at a cost of 899,900 won ($800) and 965,800 won ($850) respectively, while the Pink Gold Galaxy Note 5 will be available in 64GB storage only at a cost of 965,800 won ($850).
Which is your favourite Galaxy Note 5 colour and which one would you buy? Let us know your views in the comments below guys and check out our full Galaxy Note 5 review!
HTC One A9 shows up at Orange France ahead of launch

We weren’t expecting to see the HTC One A9 for a few more days yet, but a listing for the handset has appeared over at Orange France’s website. The page gives us a quick look at the handset, along with hints at a few specifications.
The leak doesn’t contain too many spoilers about the hardware inside the HTC One A9, although it does suggest that the smartphone will come with a 5-inch screen with a 1080p resolution. There is also mention of a 13 megapixel rear camera, 4 megapixel front facing camera and 4G LTE speeds. The One A9 will also ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and HTC’s Sense Home software.

Previous rumors suggest that the One A9 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, and a fingerprint scanner too.
The Orange France listing also gives us a price for the HTC One A9 – €599.99, which works out to roughly $690. This certainly seems a little high given the phone’s mid-range specifications, so perhaps the handset will be less expensive at other retailers, or this could just be a placeholder price tag.
HTC is expected to officially unveil its One A9 smartphone on October 20th at an event taking place in New York.
LG announces G4 will begin receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow update from next week
Ever since Google officially announced Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the world last month, we’ve been waiting to see which manufacturer will be the first (other than Google and its Android One partners, of course) to update its devices to this latest version of Android. Thanks to a press release issued earlier today, it would appear that LG has sprung out of the traps ahead of the pack, by announcing that its G4 handset will be the world’s first handset to receive the Marshmallow update.
G4 users in Poland should begin seeing update notifications from next week onwards, while other European countries, and indeed, other regions such as Asia and the Americas, will follow soon afterwards.
LG’s posted changelog of added features is a little bare, to say the least:
- Permissions have been simplified with greater control of the information applications can access, not just at the time of installation but any time after (Granular permissions)
- Silent feature for sound and vibrate mode, as well as a Do Not Disturb mode to block all sounds or only alarms and notifications
- Doze mode which shuts down background processing of certain apps when the phone is not in use, to significantly prolong battery life
Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile had this to say:
“By working closely with Google, LG has been able to bring Android 6.0 to the G4 ahead of any of our competitors. While speed alone isn’t an indicator of great service, it does go a long way toward giving consumers the confidence that LG is committed to its existing customers first.”
So it’s great news for LG G4 owners, in Poland initially, with the rest of the world following suit soon after. Next in line for LG should be last year’s flagship, the G3, while the big question is whether LG will update the venerable G2 to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. That would truly be a sign of loyalty to its customers.
Full Press Release:
SEOUL, Oct. 15, 2015 — Owners of LG Electronics’ (LG) G4 smartphone will be the first in the world to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. LG G4 owners in Poland will begin receiving their M upgrade beginning next week with other markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas to follow.
The latest update to the Android operating system offers a number of features designed to enhance the user experience, such as:
- Permissions have been simplified with greater control of the information applications can access, not only at the installation stage but any time
- Silent feature for sound and vibrate mode as well as a Do Not Disturb mode to block all sounds or only alarms and notifications
- Doze Mode which shuts down background processing of certain apps when the phone is not in use, to significantly prolong battery life
“By working closely with Google, LG has been able to bring Android 6.0 to the G4 ahead of any of our competitors,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company. “While speed alone isn’t an indicator of great service, it does go a long way toward giving consumers the confidence that LG is committed to its existing customers first.”
Details of the Android M upgrade schedule and affected models will be announced in individual markets.

LG to begin rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow next week, LG G4 first in line

Are you ready for some Android 6.0 Marshmallow goodness? There’s plenty to be had with Google’s new iteration of their mobile OS. And if you are an LG user, the Korean manufacturer has good news for you. They are about to begin rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates, starting next week.
Hold your horses, though. It’s not time to celebrate just yet; at least not for everyone. The phone maker clearly mentions the first device to get the delicious update will be the LG G4. And because not all G4’s are created equal, they will begin with those in Poland. Other markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas are to follow soon afterward.

Aside from the common improvements we saw announced at Google IO, LG is also adding its own list of improvements. These include the following.
- Permissions have been simplified with greater control of the information applications can access, not only at the installation stage but any time.
- Silent feature for sound and vibrate mode as well as a Do Not Disturb mode to block all sounds or only alarms and notifications.
- Doze Mode which shuts down background processing of certain apps when the phone is not in use, to significantly prolong battery life.

Life is truly good with LG for those who opted for the company’s flagship smartphone. The LG G4 is an awesome handset, and it is about to get even better. Sit tight and enjoy Android 6.0 Marshmallow once it hits your smartphone. Not all manufacturers are this quick; in fact, LG is beating most of the big players here.

Forbes lists the top-earning YouTube stars for 2014 to 2015

Forbes has ranked the YouTube stars who earned the most for the year ending on June 1, 2015… and the money they raked in can make you seriously think that you’re in the wrong line of work. The first person in the list shouldn’t surprise gamers: it’s Pewdiepie, who reportedly took in a jaw-dropping amount of $12 million for his video game playthroughs and commentaries. Another gamer, KSI, also made the list after taking in $4.5 million. Video gamers aren’t the only ones earning sweet, sweet YouTube money, though. Comedy acts seem to be doing great on the website, as well, with duos Smosh and Fine Brothers getting $8.5 million each. Showing off her unusual talent has paid off for Lindsey Stirling, as well, seeing as she took in $6 million for dancing while playing the violin in her videos. Michelle Phan may not be uploading as many make-up tutorials these days, but she still earned $3 million, thanks to her various deals and investments.
The publication used a number of sources, including Nielsen and IMDB to come up with the figures they did. Take note that these numbers represent the entirety of the personalities’ earnings before taxes, management and other fees — an earlier report by a Swedish newspaper put Pewdiepie’s earnings at $7 million in 2014 — and include the money they got from ads, sponsorships, book deals and the like. By the way, the prankster and the self-taught baking chef who make up the bottom of the list still made $2.5 million each, so we wouldn’t be surprised if you’re setting up a YouTube account right as you read this.

Zero Motorcycles’ latest electric bikes pack more powerful engines
Electric motorcycle maker Zero has announced its 2016 line up and it’s expanding its stable of two-wheeled vehicles. The FXS is a lightweight supermoto-inspired bike for the city while the DSR adds more power to the company’s fleet of dual sport bikes with additional toque and horsepower. Powering these new bikes and others in the lineup is the updated Z-force motor with improved performance and efficiency. Slideshow-328316
While rivals Mission and Brammo have either completely disappeared or been swallowed up by a larger company, Zero keeps improving and introducing new bikes. Its steadily improved its offerings over its 10-year history . I rode the DS model a few years and wasn’t impressed. It felt like a bad motorcycle with an electric motor strapped on. A few months back I rode the 2015 DS, FX and SR models and was impressed at how much the company had come at creating vehicles that were not only real motorcycles, but were fun to ride.

The new DSR has 25-percent more horsepower and 56-percent more torque than the regular DS. The performance is due to the new high-output 660 watt motor controller. The base model ($15,995) has a city range of 147 miles and freeway range of 70 miles when cruising at 70-miles an hour. The optional Power Tank adds an additional 2.8 kWh of power storage (at an additional $2,674) that extends the range to 179 miles in the city and 86 on the highway.

The FXS continues the FX’s mission to make riding on the street way more fun than it should be. It has 70 pounds of toque and up to 44 horsepower in a less-than-a-300-pound body. The 3.3 kWh version with 45 mile city range runs $8,495 while the 6.5 kWh version with a 90 mile city range will set you back $10,990.
The motorcycles are both powered by the updated Z-Force motor. Zero says the motor produces power more efficiently, cools more rapidly and has a higher thermal capability. Basically it lets you ride the bike harder and at higher sustained speeds with better range. In addition to the new bikes, the motor will be in the 2016 Zero SR, Zero S ZF13.0 and Zero DS ZF13.0.

Zero is also introducing an industry standard (J1772) charging port in its new Charge Tank accessory. It’s the same charging port system used by Tesla and the Fiat 500e. This is in addition to charging via a regular wall outlet. Known industry wide as Level 2 charging, the new tank will speed up charging from up to over eight hours to about two or three depending on the bike. The Charge Tank will be available in the spring for an additional $1,988 and will work with 2015 and later SR, DS, DSR and S models.
All these new bikes will be available in dealerships starting in November.
