iShowFast Review: USB 3.0 and Lightning Flash Drive Makes Secure File Transfers Between iOS and PCs Easy


Last year, popular accessory company Sanho and its HYPER brand launched the iStick, a flash drive with both USB and Lightning connectors to make it easy to transfer files between iOS devices and computers. A Kickstarter campaign for the iStick raised over $1.1 million, with the device coming in capacities ranging from 8 GB to 128 GB.

Building on the success of the iStick, HYPER by Sanho has worked with Taiwanese firm iCirround to bring a next-generation version, the MFi-certified iShowFast, to the United States. By upgrading the USB connectivity to USB 3.0, the iShowFast is up to 14 times faster than the iStick and SanDisk’s similar iXpand flash drives, offering read speeds of up to 140 MB/second over USB and 30 MB/second over Lightning.

As it has done with a number of its other products, HYPER by Sanho is launching iShowFast via an Indiegogo campaign, but backers shouldn’t expect an extended production timeline with potential stumbling blocks pushing delivery out even further than anticipated. iShowFast is already in production and ready to go, with HYPER by Sanho set to start shipping orders out as soon as the $50,000 Indiegogo campaign ends next month.

We’ve had a few days to play with an iShowFast stick, and while it’s a pretty straightforward product that operates essentially identically to the iStick, it was good to see the device is indeed ready for launch in its retail packaging and to be able to try it out with its companion app for managing files on iOS devices.

Facebook’s iOS app uses 3D Touch to make short work of status updates


When you find yourself needing to post to Facebook quickly, the social network’s app leverages tech on Apple’s latest handsets to do just that. Thanks to the newfangled 3D Touch tool that arrived with the new iPhones, a press on the app’s icon will reveal options for taking a photo/video, uploading a photo/video and composing a status update. With the addition, Facebook joins a collection of apps (like Dropbox) that have already taken advantage of the new iOS feature. Young amputees will soon get ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Star Wars’ bionic hands


A heroic set of prosthetic hand designs will soon allow young amputees to transform into their favorite Disney characters. Whether they prefer a red Iron Man gauntlet, one of Queen Elsa’s sparkling blue gloves or a hand inspired by Star Wars‘ iconic lightsabers, they’ll be able to take on the world with a prosthetic that finally marries form and function. The three models have been created by Open Bionics, a startup working on cheap, 3D-printed hands for amputees. Joel Gibbard, the company’s founder, says they’ll cost around $500 and be available in 2016. Another, non-Disneyfied design should be roughly £2,000 ($3,071) — considerably more, but still a fraction of what many existing prosthetics cost.

Open Bionics is part of the 2015 Disney Accelerator programme, which explains its choice of characters. Still, the ‘House of Mouse’ has been gracious enough to provide royalty free licenses, as well as time and input from its creative teams. The three versions are fitted with LED lights and, in the case of the Iron Man model, a vibration motor for when the user wants to fire a “rocket.” Open Bionics isn’t the first company to develop a superhero-inspired prosthetic though — Limbitless Solutions produced a similar version back in March. Robert Downey Jr. might be too busy to hand-deliver this new model, but regardless, we suspect more than a few amputees will be psyched to join the Avengers’ ranks.

TuneIn adds NFL broadcasts to its $8 premium radio subscription

Back in August, radio-streaming app TuneIn announced its $8/month premium streaming option that included music, audiobooks and live sports. Today, the company revealed that NFL games are now part of its on-field coverage. Thanks to a multi-year deal with the league, TuneIn will offer live broadcasts for all 32 teams, including both home and away play-by-play feeds. What’s more, all national and Spanish radio broadcasts will be included as well. There’s an NFL on TuneIn station too, serving up football coverage around the clock with news and commentary from NFL Network shows and podcasts. Starting in November, there will be a live “look-in” show streaming through the app that’ll offer news, stats and clips of in-progress games on Sundays from 1 PM to 8 PM ET. If you’re willing to follow the action the gridiron without the visuals, TuneIn is certainly a cheaper option that the NFL Game Pass which offers video replays in addition to live gameday audio for $99/year. NFL streams join MLB, Barclays Premier League, Bundesliga and more sports coverage that’s already available through the TuneIn subscription service.

ZTE reveals details for Axon mini, Axon Watch, more


ZTE on Monday kicked off the week announcing the availability details for its Axon products. Moreover, it also introduced a new model as part of the Axon family, too.

Axon Mini

Joining the ZTE Axon lineup is the Axon mini, a 5.2-inch smartphone powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor with 3GB RAM. Internal storage is listed at 32GB with an microSD expansion card allowing for extra space.

In terms of cameras, the Axon mini offers up a 13-megapixel rear shooter with an 8-megapixel unit around front. Battery is listed at 2800mAh which should be more than enough to get average users through a day of usage.

Built from “Boeing 787 aircraft-grade aluminum-titanium alloy”, the phone supports a trio of biometric authentication options: fingerprint, voice control and eye-scan.

The Axon mini will be sold in a standard and Premium version; however, it’s not immediately clear what the difference is. There’s mention of NBA-themed models in the press release but we cannot surmise of they’re one in the same.

As for the Axon Watch, it will be made available for purchase from ZTE’s MyZTE site in China starting from October 27. Poweed by Tencent OC, the watch features a 1.4-inch Gorilla Glass screen with sapphire coating and features an IP67 certification. In other words, it’s built to withstand the elements.

Specs for the Axon Watch include a 300 mAh battery, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB storage and Bluetooth 4.1. The watch supports both voice and gesture control and can also be used for health and fitness purposes.

Axon Max

Other outlets are reporting that the phone could boast a 6-inch display with 4GB RAM but that’s not been confirmed as of yet.

YouTube adds local versions in six new countries

Google today announced that YouTube has local versions in 85 countries, adding Adriatics, Baltics, Bulgaria, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Belarus just today. As you can imagine, global reach is important to Google, especially when it comes to YouTube with 80% of its viewership being outside of the United States.

Local versions of YouTube are good news for creators, too. It opens up the opportunity for creators to become a partner, earn money from their channels, and gain access to tools and resources that can help them make the most of YouTube. Creators can access online lessons via the YouTube Creator Academy to get started and learn best practices, and the Creator Community gives creators a place to meet each other, find collaborations, and more. We hope that this will allow more creators to bring more of their ideas and talents to YouTube for all of us to enjoy.

In other words, users in these six new countries can expect to see better quality videos as creators begin to take advantage of YouTube’s many creator opportunities.

New Xiaomi products coming October 19th

Xiaomi has already released a slew of new smartphones and consumer electronics this year and the growing Chinese technology company has announced that a more are on the way next week. In a post on the company’s official forums and a teaser on its Weibo account, Xiaomi states that new products are set to launch on October 19th.

Xiaomi October 19 teaserThe teaser briefly mentions “the next generation” of something, but we don’t quite know what to expect from Xiaomi’s announcement. The teaser is absent of any product details.

Perhaps the company’s flagship Mi 5 smartphone will finally launch, but it is equally possible that another new mid-range smartphone or product in the company’s growing portfolio of electronic gadgets and home appliances could also be unveiled. The company has already released cost effective products for the 4K TV and air purifier markets.

The last rumors about the Xiaomi Mi 5 suggested that the phone may come with a 5.2-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 810 processor, 16 megapixel rear camera and 3,000mAh battery. A 5.7-inch Plus version has also been rumoured in the past, which is said to arrive with a Snapdragon 820 SoC, but that means that the phone wouldn’t appear until sometime in 2016. Talk about these devices has been a little quiet recently, so Xiaomi may have something different planned.

Near-death experience: the uncertain future of Sony, HTC, and Motorola

The rise of smartphones has been meteoric, but as demand levels off, and prices begin to fall amid commoditization, a number of manufacturers are finding themselves in a precarious situation. Three of the biggest names in trouble are Sony, HTC, and Motorola. What are they doing about it? Can they turn things around? Is there a real risk that they won’t make it?

Sony’s make-or-break year

When Kazuo Hirai, Sony’s Chief Exec, unveiled the new Z5 range at IFA in Berlin, there was a palpable sense of excitement. Five iterations in and the electronics giant is producing some seriously good smartphones that should be capable of competing at the premium end of the market. The aptly-named Z5 Premium boasts the world’s first 4K display, and it dominated the headlines, but, beyond the display, its smaller companions, the Z5 and Z5 Compact, offer almost exactly the same hardware.

Sony is perhaps the only OEM offering cutting edge specs in a smaller handset with the Compact. It has also listened and learned after each new generation of Xperia. The Z5’s have superior battery life, fast cameras, plenty of raw power, a great fingerprint sensor, water resistance, front-facing speakers, all the connectivity you could ask for, a light-touch Sony UI, and a microSD card slot. The only obvious omission from most Android-fan’s wish lists is wireless charging.

If the Z5 range sells, then Sony is here to stay, but the mobile arm is still being restructured and is set to post losses of $480 million this year. There’s no word on a U.S. carrier picking them up as yet. The fact that Verizon dropped the Xperia 4v, a special version of the Z4 (Z3+ in Europe), is probably a good thing because it shows Sony focusing on the Z5 range, but does it mean Verizon will sell a Z5?

Much depends on the success of the Z5 trio. If it doesn’t sell, and Sony’s completed restructuring hasn’t plugged the leaks in its mobile division, then the Xperia brand could sink forever.

“We will continue with the business as long as we are on track with the scenario of breaking even next year onwards … Otherwise, we haven’t eliminated the consideration of alternative options,” said Kazuo Hirai recently, talking to Reuters.

It’s tough to see what else Sony can do here. It was in a mess, having missed the smartphone boat a few years back. It cut Ericsson loose, and adopted the six-monthly flagship update schedule in order to catch up. Arguably, it has done that now. Short of cracking the U.S carriers, which is definitely important when you’re selling high-end smartphones, Sony has made the right moves.

Is HTC doomed?

The original Android pioneer, HTC shed its white label roots just as Google’s new platform was taking off, and it soared to great heights. Sadly, those heights are a fading memory, because HTC has lost a great deal of its perceived value this year, a fairly steady downward trajectory that started in 2011. There has been acquisition talk, and a lot of analysts have written HTC off.

You can point to a number of design and marketing missteps at HTC, but none were worse than the One M9. The company won plaudits for the One M7, so it understandably stuck with that design for the M8. But, despite being admired, the M8 didn’t sell very well. HTC ignored the warning signals and pressed ahead with the One M9, which was virtually indistinguishable from its predecessor.

Apple famously employs the “tick tock” method with its iPhone line, a big update, marked by a new number, followed by a modest one, marked with the S. HTC effectively went “tick tock tock” with the One M9 and it has been a complete disaster. It was exacerbated because it launched alongside a major “tick” from Samsung, in the S6 and S6 Edge.

It would be a mistake to write HTC off. It has resisted the acquisition talk, and it’s trying to expand beyond reliance on smartphones. The buzz about the HTC Vive, its new virtual reality headset, being produced in partnership with Valve, is getting louder. If VR takes off in a big way, HTC could ride that wave. The cameras and fitness bands are less exciting, but they do signal a clear intent to broaden its scope.

Mid-range HTC handsets have been doing better, but that end of the market is too competitive for HTC to adopt it as a strategy. It’s definitely going to need a serious new contender as its next flagship, if it wants to stay in the Android smartphone business.

Motorola in the middle

You could argue that Motorola is dead already, after the company was split in two and Google bought the phone-making wing, Motorola Mobility. It had perhaps the most illustrious of all mobile histories, delivering many innovations over the years, but it spectacularly failed to catch the first smartphone wave. Under Google, it soon became apparent that the spirit of innovation certainly wasn’t dead. It clawed its way back with budget devices and mid-rangers with eye-catching new features.

With an apparent turnaround on the cards, as Motorola worked toward profitability for the first time in ages, it was surprising when Google cut it loose. The company was sold to Lenovo last year and the combination propelled the pair into third place in the world’s smartphone seller charts. But it has since dropped to fifth, as Motorola sales have fallen, and Lenovo’s smartphone business recorded a loss of $292 million in the second quarter of this year.

Consider that sales for Lenovo’s computers and tablets are also in decline, and the recently announced job losses could spell serious trouble ahead. Lenovo can’t afford its smartphone business to be unprofitable for too long, and so the pressure is on Motorola to pull it out of the bag. As margins on budget phones continue to shrink, there’s little prospect that focusing on that end of the market is going to be enough, and Motorola has abandoned the premium end, so that leaves the middle.

Looking at the Moto X Style, you can see a pretty compelling set of specs for the price. Like Sony, it has obviously looked at what Android fans are asking for and tried to deliver it, with customized designs as an added USP. The fact it’s being offered at a price well below the current flagship crop, should drum up plenty of interest.

What if Motorola was to revive the Razr brand with a folding smartphone? Will it continue to make headway with new smartwatches by making them independent of phones? Both were suggested as future directions by Rick Osterloh, chief of Motorola Mobility, in a recent interview with The Information.

Who will make it?

It’s tough to predict where these three players will be in the smartphone market next year. Sony could decide to throw in the towel, if the Z5 range doesn’t sell well enough. Another tock for HTC would surely be the end of its smartphone days, though it may manage to shift into another market. If Motorola can’t innovate fast enough and generate some profits, there’s no telling what Lenovo will do.

OnePlus to start building phones in India, open sale tomorrow

OnePlus is preparing the next big step to ramp up its global handset presence. Today, the Chinese smartphone company announced plans to begin manufacturing smartphones in India come the end of 2015.

The production facility is planned at the Foxconn Rising Stars factory in Sri City Integrated Business City in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The 30,000 square feet factory will have a cumulative peak production capacity of 500,000 units per month and will allow the company to pursue a more aggressive marketing and retail campaign in the country.

“Producing smartphones in India is one of the most important decisions that we have made so far at OnePlus, and we are thankful to the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Foxconn for helping us make this happen. India being one of our biggest markets worldwide, we are committed to a long term sustainable growth path. The goal of opening up production in India is to improve the supply of handsets to the country, allowing for more availability and faster, more frequent sales. The move should also result in some efficiency savings for OnePlus, as it won’t have to ship so many handsets around. The first batch of Indian produced phones should be available by the end of the year.

Following on from the global one hour open sale the other day, OnePlus is also holding another sale tomorrow which is exclusively open to Indian customers. From 8AM on October 13th, customers will be able to buy an OnePlus 2 through Amazon India without the need for an invite, so long as stock levels hold out.
