Sprint customers: two more weeks for unlimited data, talk, and text at $60/month

Sprint announced yesterday, that its $60 per month unlimited data, talk, and text plan will increase to $70 per month on October 16th. This will not affect customers who already have the plan or those who enroll before this date.

According to the press release, Sprint and T-Mobile are the only companies that have this type of unlimited plan. Sprint is quick to emphasize that T-Mobile’s is $80, which still is $10 higher than its plan will be after October 16.

This unlimited plan is for both new and existing customers, but let’s make no mistake about it, the company’s focus is on the existing customers.

This is an expected move, considering the fact that T-Mobile recently surpassed Sprint in August to become the third largest carrier in the U.S.

And if this doesn’t convince you that Sprint wants to entice consumers from these other networks, just think of how it must still feel after its lost bid at a merger with T-Mobile. It was just three months ago that T-Mobile and Sprint’s respective CEOs, John Legere and Marcelo Claure, had some harsh words to say about each other’s mobile plans.

Sprint has probably wanted to show it can succeed on its own against the other carriers or at least T-Mobile. Don’t expect another bid for a merger between these two anytime soon.

First official images of the BlackBerry Priv are released into the wild

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

There’s been so much Google news lately that this piece of news kind of slipped past us, until now. The BlackBerry Priv, or as some are calling it, PRIV by BlackBerry, was officially announced last week and has been getting a fair amount of press since then – most notably, a mildly awkward interview featuring the device and BlackBerry CEO John Chen. To further its legend before an actual announcement event, some official images of the BlackBerry Priv surfaced and show us more of the device that we’ve all seen so much of already:

Although the side view photos actually show us very little, it does highlight how thin the device is despite having a physical keyboard tucked inside it. While much of the talk has been about the physical hardware of the Priv, one of the most important things about the device is its emphasis on privacy (hence the name) and what it means for Android in the commercial sector, a sector that Android has traditionally struggled to break into despite being the most populous operating system on the planet. We’re expecting to see the Priv announced in November, but we expect we’ll be seeing a few more details between now and then.

What do you think about these official images of the BlackBerry Priv? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Sony answers your 4K display questions

sony xperia z5 premium aa 3

Sony announced a world’s first with the Xperia Z5 Premium and its 4K display, but a revelation that the handset actual renders the majority of content at just 1080p has left a lot of consumers a little unsure about Sony’s accomplishment. To settle the grumbling, the company has taken a little time out to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about the Xperia Z5 Premium’s 4K display. Here’s a summary.

The biggest question is probably when is and isn’t the 4K display actually used to its full potential. Sony has already stated that captured pictures and videos can be displayed in 4K and has further clarified that the 4K display also activates if a third-party streaming service is sending over content at that resolution too. Sony also says that its display is futureproofed to support additional 4K content as it becomes more widespread.

Q- How is (and isn’t) Xperia Z5 Premium’s 4K display used?

A- Xperia Z5 Premium uses its 4K display when you’re viewing either the 4K content you’ve captured using your device or third-party 4K content from streaming services – all other content (including the homescreen and apps) are displayed in 1080p Full HD or lower resolution to simply optimise performance, power consumption and battery

The main reason for dropping 4K support most of the time is down to battery performance. Even rendering the general UI at a higher resolution puts additional strain on the phone’s processing components and battery, and Sony seems to have decided that any boost to visual quality isn’t worth the effects on battery life. A smart choice.

Q- Why is the 4K display only used for Sony’s Album/Movie apps and everything else (Home screen, apps, browsing etc) is rendered in Full HD 1080p?

A- There’s a few reasons – first up, after extensive user research and testing we found that rendering entertainment content in 4K, but still being able to access and use all the other great Sony smartphone features as normal without compromising on battery life, was an absolute priority for users … Secondly, many third-party apps are not designed or capable of running at 4K resolution (yet),

As for why anyone would actually want a 4K display squeezed into a smartphone, Sony says that the increase in resolution delivers a richer viewing experience than 1080p. Although, the company then states that pixel density is just one part of its formula for a superior viewing experience. It might be worth noting that company’s TRILUMINOS Display technology features in a number of other non-4K Sony smartphones.

Q- Why would I need a 4K display in a smartphone – what’s the benefit?

A- It offers a viewing experience four times the resolution of Full HD, delivering a more lifelike, richer viewing experience achieved in three core areas: a dense 806ppi resolution; vivid colour with TRILUMINOS Display for mobile, Dynamic Contrast Enhancer for contrast and X-Reality for crystal clear clarity.

You can read the full answers given by Sony over at the source link below, along with a couple of other questions and answers about 4K screenshot sizes and the resolution’s impact on storage capacity.

Are you sold on Sony’s balance of 4K and 1080p rendering, or is the feature rather useless if it’s barely switched on?

Deezer gets into live football commentary with TalkSport’s help

Deezer

In recent months, Spotify and Deezer have mixed things up by extending beyond music and into podcasts and video. But what about live content? That’s exactly what Deezer hopes will set it apart from rivals after it launched a new partnership with TalkSport, one of the world’s biggest sports radio stations. From today, customers in the UK and Germany can access live coverage of Premier League and Bundesliga games respectively. It’ll also host match fixtures and results, football-centric music playlists and extra content from Deezer’s football editors. Football podcasts will also be available, but only for UK subscribers. If you’re a Deezer user and want to see what it’s all about, Football on Deezer is prominently displayed on the homepage, as well as in the apps section. It’s also available on free and Premium tiers, but non-paying customers will need to sit through ads.

NASA reveals potential low-cost missions for the Discovery program

NASA has announced the five new project concepts it’s considering for the Discovery program, which focuses on low-cost space missions. It’s the same program we have to thank for the Dawn spacecraft that recently captured a sunlit Ceres, the Messenger probe that crashed into Mercury after it ran out of power in April and the Mars InSight lander that’s currently heading for the red planet. Two of those five concepts want to take a closer look at the second planet from the sun: the first one is called Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry and Imaging or DAVINCI. Its spacecraft will study the chemical composition of Venus’ atmosphere during its descent and will investigate whether there are still active volcanoes on the planet.

The Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography and Spectroscopy mission (VERITAS), on the other hand, wants to capture surface images and produce high-resolution maps of the same planet. You can see an artist’s interpretation of the NASA JPL-conceived VERITAS spacecraft in the image above. Next is Psyche — a mission that aims to study the metallic asteroid Psyche, which scientists believe was a protoplanet until its rocky layers were stripped off after crashing into another object.

Another JPL concept called Near Earth Object Camera (NEOCam) aims to find ten times the number of near-Earth objects that’s been discovered thus far. Finally, the Lucy mission plans to send a spacecraft to the outer solar system in order to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids that could hold the secrets to our solar system’s history. The teams behind these ideas will receive $3 million each to conduct studies and conjure up analyses to convince NASA to choose their project. NASA is earmarking $500 million for each mission it chooses (there might be more than one) and will announce its decision by September 2016.

ITV Player comes to Amazon’s Fire TV

ITV Player

ITV’s replacement for ITV Player is meant to launch before the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean the company is holding back on its app expansion. As promised, the broadcaster has brought ITV Player to the Amazon Fire TV, letting you catch-up on all of your favourite programmes on-demand. The rollout is staggered, however, as Fire TV Stick owners will have to a couple of weeks until they can get in on the action. And if you’ve pre-ordered Amazon’s new 4K-ready Fire TV, that too will support the app when it starts shipping on October 5th. When ITV Hub does launch, with a focus on live TV, ITV Player will be swapped for the rebranded app, but you shouldn’t need to lift a finger.

BBM app lands on Apple Watch before WhatsApp

Apps are continuing to trickle into Apple’s wearable, with recent standouts including Airbnb, Google and…BlackBerry? The company once called RIM has announced Apple Watch support for its messaging service, BBM. When reading the product description on the iTunes store, you find that the companion app will allow you to share photos and voice notes, see when people are responding to your messages, and even offer groundbreaking features like delivered and read receipts. There isn’t a wide variety of alternatives available on the Apple Watch at the moment — with WhatsApp and Facebook messanger still missing from the app store — but maybe there’s a reason for that. What’s your PIN? Let’s discuss this some more through our wearables.

JISIWEI S+: a robot that can sweep, vacuum, mop and protect your family

jsw-s-1

It takes a quick visit to your local Best Buy to see a plethora of cool floor cleaning robots. These can often sweep and vacuum your floors, but though they are pretty cool, most don’t go past that basic level of functionality. JISIWEI wants to change that with the new JSW S+.

What exactly is it? It’s a bit hard to explain. Essentially, it is a smarter cleaning robot. It can do much more, and is better equipped than your typical vacuuming bot. Let’s tell you a bit about what it can do.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/694663843/jsw-s-protects-your-home-from-intruders-and-dust/widget/video.html

Cleaning

Of course, cleaning is the JISIWEI S+’s main purpose, and it is very good at doing just that. The JSW S+ can sweep, vacuum and mop. It has 7 available patterns to leave your floor shiny and clean. In addition, the mop installed under the device is pretty large, making cleaning much more convenient.

It is the little things that make the JSW S+ special, though, such as the ability to detect sudden drops. It will back off if it gets too close to falling down the stairs, for example. It also uses 15 sets of front-contact sensors, which makes it twice more sensitive than the common cleaning robot. This ensures that both your furniture and expensive device are safe. In addition, its soft rubber wheels will ensure that your floor gets no scratches from the robot.

Of course, this can all be controlled through the official app.

jsw-s-4

Security

Aside from being a great cleaning machine, the JISIWEI S+ is meant to keep you closer to your family and pets, as well as giving you peace of mind when it comes to your home’s security. Whenever you want to know what’s going on at home, you can use the official app to check up on things.

The S+ has a built-in camera and connects to WiFi, so users always have a gateway to connect to their pets, loved ones or even those pesky home invaders. The device’s camera not only gives you a live feed. It can also take photos, record video and even send this content to the service’s own cloud storage.

The coolest part is you can turn on Safeguarding & Smart Motion Detection. This will ensble motion detection and alert you if anyone is around.

jsw-s-8

Charging

This is a big deal to many of you. How long will the JISIWEI S+ last on a single charge? The device has a 2600 mAh battery. This may not sound like much to us smartphone geeks, but it turns out this robot can do a lot with that small battery. The company estimates it can do 120 minute sessions per charge, covering about 200 square meters of floor cleaning.

That is definitely not bad for a cleaning device. And if it starts running out of juice, it will simply head back to its charging station and power up. Work can wait until the device reaches its full charge again.

jsw-s-6

Who’s buying?

Are any of you looking to get one of these? JISIWEI is currently running its funding campaign for the S+ on Kickstarter. There’s very few early bird spots, which would get you a unit for $249. If you can’t get a hold of that deal, the regular Kickstarter prices start at $279. Certainly not a cheap product, but it’s not bad when you compare it to other cleaning robots, especially considering this one can do much more.

Also, shipping is estimated for November, so you can have this little guy running around the house in time for the holidays!

Back the JSW S+ on Kickstarter!

Sony Xperia Z5 camera tops DxOMark mobile rankings

sony xperia z5 first look aa (9 of 14)

The DxOMark Mobile league table has a new champion, the Sony Xperia Z5 edges ahead with the best rated smartphone camera on the market right now. DxOMark’s score is highly regarded throughout the industry for high-quality testing of cameras and lenses.

2015 has already seen the Samsung Galaxy S6 and its Edge variants, the Note 5, Moto X Style and the new Nexus 6P all score very highly in the DxOMark rankings, surpassing the previous years’ leaders by quite a margin. The Galaxy S6 was holding the crown for the majority of this year, but the title now belongs to Sony’s Xperia Z5, as the phone nudged ahead by just a single point with a score of 87/100.

DxOMark Mobile rankings Xperia Z5

The Xperia Z5 and its 23 megapixel rear sensor score particularly highly for its autofocus technology, which is said to work well in a variety of different condition. Low light performance and good flash exposure were listed as highlights, and video stabilization is also marked as one of the best in the business. If you’re looking for cons, DxOMark did note some artefacts with blue sky saturation and the camera’s video performance is not quite as good in low light conditions as when taking stills.
