Tinder’s ‘Super Like’ is now available to all

Swiping right on Tinder is a simple to tell someone that you like them, but what if you want them to know that you really, really, really, really, really like them? That’s what Super Like is for, a swipe up (or blue star) that signifies that you’re developing more than a passing interest in another person. The feature was trialled in Australia last month and now it’s being pushed out to Tinder users all across the globe. According to TechCrunch, Tinder CEO Sean Rad claimed that the option is encouraging more people to start paying for Tinder Plus. Unlike regular swipes, Super Like is a once-a-day type affair, which means that you have to be choosy as to who you want to bear your soul to. If you’re a Tinder Plus user, however, you are entitled to use the button five times — although that could prove costly if you’re over Tinder’s desirable age range.

Apple fixes lock screen issue in latest iOS 9 update

Apple's iPhone 6s

Remember that iOS 9 security issue that allows someone to bypass the iPhone lock screen using Siri and access your contacts and photos? And how some folks thought that it wasn’t real? Well, Apple sure did, as the latest iOS 9.0.2 update includes a fix for the problem. Apple said that because of the security hole, “a person with physical access to an iOS device may be able to access photos and contacts from the lock screen.” It addressed the issue by “restricting options on a locked device,” meaning users will no longer be able to exploit Siri to access those areas.

With iOS 9.0.2, Apple also squashed iCloud backup issues, iMessage activation problems and a bug with mobile data settings. Finally, it fixed a screen rotation issue and improved the security of Podcasts. Want the update now? Don’t worry, you should get a notification that it’s available if you haven’t already.

ICYMI: Toilet tech, sight-giving headset & lab-grown veins

ICYMI: Toilet tech, sight-giving headset and lab veins

Today on In Case You Missed It: Biosynthetic veins and arteries have been created by researchers in London that are able to imitate traits of human tissues, including the ability to self-heal. A headset designed for people with serious vision problems costs a hefty $15,000 but is able to modify sight for users by sending a tweaked for color and focus livestream of reality back to the display. And a Kickstarter gadget aims to tech out your toilet to actually smell okay rather than like… well you know.

We found a parody video from the band Twenty One Pilots, acting out the ‘extreme sport’ of something they’re calling phone pinching. Send it to your most klutzy friend asap!

And on the off-chance you’re a fan of the pico drone that I loathe so, so much, you can see a video of its adorableness, here.

If you come across any interesting videos, we’d love to see them. Just tweet us with the #ICYMI hashtag @engadget or @mskerryd.

Nest gets more smart home devices talking to each other

Getting your connected-home gear to actually connect with one another can be a pain. Nest is trying to alleviate at least some of that hassle by adding Weave, its ad-hoc networking system to Works with Nest, it’s third party development platform. Weave lets items talk to each other without relying on a home network. The company is also introducing APIs for the Nest Cam with basic camera controls and access to motion and sound events. Plus, it launched a Works with Nest store with hardware that, well, work with Nest. Finally, it showed off a new lock from Yale that works with the fancy new features it just announced.

The updated developer program is Nest’s way of being a more integral part of the Internet of Things. Its Works with Nest program is designed to get more devices talking to the company’s core products. With it third-parties can set up their products to react to data transmitted by Nest items. For example: the new Yale door lock will alert you if the carbon monoxide levels in your house are at a dangerous level before you enter the house because the Nest Protect shared that information.

By adding Weave as an ad-hoc network for devices it removes one of the pain points found in IoT; the hub. “We’ve never believed in hubs. Nest Weave is a very organic mesh network that extends is own range as you add devices,” said Greg Hu, senior manager of the Nest platform.

The Yale Linus lock is the first item to use the new feature. The lock tells you if its opened and closed and can’t be fooled by an open door with the bolt sticking out. The lock can track when people enter and leave the house via unique passcodes and is controlled by the Nest Aware app. Both the lock and Weave will be available in 2016. The Nest Cam API and Works with Nest store are available now.

TAG Heuer’s first smartwatch gets a $400 price bump

Normally, when a company changes its mind about the pricing of a forthcoming gadget, it’s to surprise us all with a nice discount. Luxury watch brand TAG Heuer, on the other hand, felt that its first smartwatch, the Carrera Wearable 01, was actually too cheap at $1,400. In an interview with CNBC, CEO Jean-Claude Biver revealed that the timepiece, created with Google and Intel, will now actually retail for $1,800. Biver also let slip that the watch will launch on November 9th at the LVMH building in New York. The executive also feels that $1,800 is a fair price for the unit, since it’s only a few hundred bucks more than you’d pay for an Apple Watch Hermés Collection — produced by a rival luxury goods brand that may, one day, be owned by TAG’s parent company.

Disney Research designs 3D-printed soft skin system for toy robots

Baymax is the perfect healthcare companion, because he’s soft and doesn’t have any sharp edges that could hurt his patients. That’s why it’s no surprise that when Disney Research wanted to create a toy robot that’s safe to play with, the researchers ended up making something that looks like it was plucked right out of his body. A team from the laboratory 3D printed a couple of limb-like robotic parts with soft outer skin that conceals hard plastic components. That soft, rubbery exterior can keep both robot and owner safe, while the air-tight cavity inside can sense pressure. When connected to a robotic system that has pressure feedback control, the cylindrical limbs can handle even delicate objects like a block of tofu.

Of course, you can’t expect to take home an interactive mini-Baymax toy anytime soon. The team obviously still has a lot to do — such as design the rest of the robot — but this is definitely a start. You can read more about the project right here, or watch the squishy 3D-printed limbs in action below.

The “P” in Nexus 6P stands for “Premium”, the “X” in Nexus 5X for “neXus”

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

One of the most surprising things about the new Nexus smartphones was the fact that Google decided to add seemingly random letters to the end of their new device’s names, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. However, in a Reddit AMA today with Android lead Hiroshi Lockheimer, it was revealed that the “X” in the Nexus 5X comes from the “X” in “NeXus”, whereas the “P” in Nexus 6P means “premium”. This all makes a lot of sense given what the devices are like, but they’re still kind of random and there’s not really a clear direction for them to go in next year.

HL> X for the core of the Nexus brand (plus it sounds cool!), P for premium.

It smacks vaguely of Apple adding “S” (or “C”) to the end of iPhone for relatively arbitrary reasons, but Google probably have their own grand plan. All I’m hoping is that next year Google announces a new Nexus 7 called the “Nexus 7S”, which should tick off Apple pretty badly – it doesn’t even matter what the “S” stands for.

What do you think about Google’s naming of the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Cyanogen OS powered ZUK Z1 hits European markets for €280

ZUK Z1 front

Following its debut in China a few months back, the ZUK Z1 is heading to the European market through a series of eBay sales. While it might not come directly from a familiar brand name, the ZUK Z1 packs in some noteworthy hardware at a price point that’s tough to beat.

The oddest specification on the sheet is the inclusion of a Snapdragon 801 processor, a staple of the early 2014 range of flagship smartphones. This chip is certainly no slouch but it won’t quite keep up with today’s high-end chips. However, this is a pretty suitable trade-off if it helps keep the price low.

The ZUK Z1 also features a 1080p 5.5-inch display, with 450 nit peak brightness and 1500:1 contrast ratio. The phone also comes equipped with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which is easily a match for today’s high-end phones. There’s a 13 megapixel Sony image sensor on the back, accompanied by an 8 megapixel camera on the front.

ZUK Z1 side

Extras are plentiful too. The phone comes with a huge 4,100mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port, dual-SIM card slots with 4G LTE support and Cyanogen OS 12.1 installed. It is certainly worth checking out the spec sheet’s network bands against your carrier before making a purchase though.

If the specifications have caught your interest, you are currently able to buy a ZUK Z1 through the Spanish eBay site for as little as €279.99. This offer will be running until October 6th, when the retail price will revert back to €374.99. If you live elsewhere in Europe, be sure to check out this listing between October 4th and 11th when another €280 sale is scheduled to take place.

Chromecast-enabled Google Photos now out for Android devices

Google has rolled out the latest version of its Photos app for Android devices, and it comes with all the new features the company announced during its Nexus event. The app is now Chromecast-enabled like the company promised, giving you the power to view photos and videos on your TV. Several users can also start uploading and subscribing to one album, and you can share animations directly from Photos to WhatsApp. If you’re in the US, you’ll be able to label people in photos, so you can easily find them later, and then merge that label with different search terms such as locations. In addition, you can adjust the speed of any slow-motion videos you shoot with the Nexus 5X or 6P in-app — if and when you do get either phone, that is. The updated app is now available for download from Google Play, while the iOS and web versions will be refreshed at some point in the future.
