LG TONE Active Bluetooth headphones available this month
Today, LG announced the global roll-out of its new TONE Active Bluetooth headset. The headphones will go on sale in North American and South Korea beginning this month, with launches in the rest of the world scheduled for the third quarter of the year.
The TONE Active’s big selling point is its durability, as LG says that it is designed to suit an active life style, hence the name. The headset is water and sweat resistant, so you can wear it during your intense workout sessions. LG has also removed the annoying dangling chords usually associated with in-ear headphones, by allowing the earbuds to retract inside the frame.
To keep the headset completely wire free, the LG TONE Active is also powered by Bluetooth technology, so customers can pair it up to their smartphone to stream music. There is also a little microphone enclosed in the frame to make and take calls hands-free.
Pricing information and an exact launch date have not been given, but we’ll probably spot additional details when the headset hits the shelves in the next few days. The LG TONE Active will be available in lime, orange, blue and pink color options.

YouTube app gets a redesigned interface and adds editing tools
The latest YouTube update adds a totally new layout that is said to make things easier to navigate and gets new editing software.
YouTube seems to be really working hard on their YouTube app as earlier this week we told you they now allow portrait videos to be played in portrait full screen and are implementing 360 degree ads.
In this update they have totally changed the layout to go with a new tab based interface. No longer is the side swipe menu, but instead three main menus at the top which you can slide between. The first is home or recommended videos, the second is your subscriptions, and last is your YouTube channel/account.
Also added was the new editor. It is much easier to trim videos, apply filters, or add music straight from the app.

Introducing Epic App Battles of Android: streaming music apps
Google Play is a paradise of both free and paid apps. As of February 2015, Google Play passed 1.4 million available apps for download. There is a myriad of apps and services to choose from and sometimes it takes a little trial and error to find the best one.
That’s where Epic App Battles of Android comes in. We will analyze the most popular apps in a particular category, compare them head to head and whittle them down until we find the best app in that category.
We are going to start off with streaming music apps. After careful consideration, we have taken the top music streaming apps on Google Play and narrowed it down to 8 apps. There are a few apps that we had to exclude, because of limited availability in the US market and exclusivity to a particular brand.

Motorola’s global launch event to be streamed live
There have been lots of leaks and rumors surrounding this year’s Moto X and Moto G that are expected to launch on the 28th. The press has gotten their invites already leaving fans clamoring for more information.

There have been a lot of leaks regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, however one of the things that has us most interested is the S-Pen that will come with Samsung‘s new flagship. After images leaked out showing that the S-Pen on the Galaxy Note 5 would sit flush with the bottom of the device, that had us wondering – dreaming, even – whether there would be some kind of auto-eject mechanism, the kind that Samsung had patented not long ago. Well, if the reports out of Korea are to be believed, the Galaxy Note 5 S-Pen will not have an auto-eject mechanism, and that’s kind of a bummer.
According to DDaily’s report, the S-Pen on the Galaxy Note 5 will be just like the S-Pen on every Galaxy Note before it – you’ll need to dig it out with your finger. That’s not exactly bad, per se, however we were looking forward to a new and innovative feature. The report goes on to confirm that the Galaxy Note 5 will also have a non-removable battery, like the Galaxy S6, and that the Gear A smartwatch will be announced alongside the phablet.

Tony Fadell volunteered to rescue Google Glass
Google’s decision to ‘graduate’ Glass from Google X in January was coupled with the announcement that the team would start reporting to Nest co-founder Tony Fadell. Glass was never a roaring success — privacy concerns and the “Glasshole” label scuppered public adoption — so some wondered whether the iPod designer had been saddled with the project. Apparently not so. In a BBC interview, Fadell has clarified that he actively asked for the role. “It wasn’t handed to me and said, ‘Tony, clean it up,’” he explained. “I offered and said, ‘this is important.’ I remember what it was like when we did the iPod and the iPhone. I think this can be that important, but it’s going to take time to get it right.”
We don’t know, however, when Fadell approached Google’s upper management to pitch his involvement. Had the company already decided to ‘graduate’ Glass before Fadell expressed an interest? If he hadn’t stepped forward, would Google have carried on regardless? We may never know, but Fadell’s support for the wearable could help Google to frame Glass’ comeback if and when a second-gen model emerges.

Angelina Jolie is directing a war drama original for Netflix
Netflix has secured a deal with actor/director Angelina Jolie Pitt to produce and direct an Original film adaptation of First They Killed My Father. It’s based on a memoir by author Loung Ung about her ordeal as a child soldier for the infamous Khmer Rouge period in Cambodia, when nearly 2 million people were killed. Jolie Pitt said that she was “deeply affected” by the book, and she and Ung spent several years adapting it for the screen. She noted that Netflix took on a project that would normally be a tough sell. “Films like this are hard to watch, but important to see.”
Netflix recently announced that it would produce Beasts Of No Nation starring Idris Elba, another film focusing on child soldiers. (Joli Pitt’s directorial debut, Unbroken, was also a war pic.) Though it might seem like a trend, Neflix is nabbing material that Hollywood might find too difficult for audiences. It’s also no doubt hunting for awards and prestige — original documentaries The Square and Virunga were both nominated for Oscars. Similar Netflix projects include What Happened, Miss Simone and Jadotville, another war drama starring Jamie Dornan. Don’t give it too much credit, though — the streaming company is also producing no less than four Adam Sandler movies.

GE and NFL team up to fund research into concussion detection
General Electric and the National Football League have handed a firm $500,000 to continue research into a portable system that can detect traumatic brain injury. The league has been criticized for its cavalier attitude towards traumatic head injuries and it’s thought that more than 25 percent of players will suffer brain problems. That’s why BrainScope is working on Ahead 200, a smartphone-connected EEG that is hoped will instantly detect concussion in an athlete to ensure they get on the spot treatment. The company will use the cash to conduct further studies with high-school sports people to ensure that the technology’s initial promise works in the field.
It’s been a long time coming for the NFL to open up about the situation, after being subject to a damning 2013 PBS documentary entitled League of Denial . In addition, the league has faced a class-action lawsuit from former players who have sustained severe neurological disorders from their time on the gridiron. The use of pitch-side technology to diagnose and treat these conditions would go a long way to preventing future athletes from suffering a similar fate. In addition, it’s likely that the military would have plenty of use for such hardware, which is why the Department of Defense has handed out nearly $30 million in funding to the firm. There’s no word on when the technology might pop up for general use, but the FDA has already given its blessing for Ahead 200 to be used as a diagnostic tool — so fingers crossed we’re not too far away.

A leak from Sprint suggests the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will have a microSD slot

A few weeks ago, it was suggested by SamMobile that it was unlikely that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will have a microSD slot – the reason being that Samsung had invested heavily into making internal storage so much faster than any other form of storage out there and that a microSD slot would seem unnecessary. For some, the lack of microSD support was the reason that they strayed away from the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, however, if the latest leak from Sprint is to be believed, then the Galaxy Note 5 might actually end up having this feature.
The above readout was spotted on a Sprint hosted website (which has predictably been taken down now) and describes the hardware available for a Samsung SM-N920P. What you’ll notice in the circled area is that “ExternalMemorySlot” is accompanied by “Yes” which suggests that the Galaxy Note 5 could indeed have a microSD slot. What’s unusual about the readout, and puts a question mark over the page’s legitimacy, is that it claims the Galaxy Note 5 will have a Qualcomm processor and only 3GB RAM – we’re expecting a homegrown Exynos processor and 4GB RAM to be in the Galaxy Note 5 instead, but only time will tell who is correct. Samsung is expected to announced the Galaxy Note 5 at an event on either August 12th or 13th.
