Inhabitat’s Week in Green: 3D-printed villas and Earth-like planets

Inhabitat's Week in Green

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

NASA dropped a bombshell this past week: The Kepler Space Telescope has discovered the most Earth-like planet to date. The rocky planet is slightly larger and warmer than our world, but it orbits a star and has the right conditions for liquid water. Meanwhile, the search for alien life goes on — and Stephen Hawking gave his support to a $100 million project seeking to find out if we’re alone in the universe. Exploring distant worlds is a challenging endeavor — last week NASA proposed a novel robotic spacecraft that could harvest wind energy while surveying gas giants like Jupiter. And the Smithsonian Institution launched a Kickstarter to save Neil Armstrong’s moon landing space suit, which is starting to fall apart after years of storage.

What if you could point a gadget at an apple and instantly know how much sugar it contained? That’s the promise of SCiO, a tiny hand-held device that can measure the molecular footprint of virtually any object. In other tech news, designer Kristof Retezár created an amazing gadget that harvests water from the air while you ride your bike so you don’t have to stop for fill-ups. MIT researchers demonstrated a water filter made from a tree branch that can remove 99 percent of E.coli bacteria. And researchers developed a 3D-printed bottle cap that can tell you if the milk’s gone bad before you take a sip.

3D printing is also progressing on the macro scale — last week a Chinese company showed just how far 3D-printed architecture has come by assembling an entire villa in less than three hours. If you’re looking for something even more futuristic, we present you with the Skysphere — a solar-powered home in the clouds that responds to the sound of your voice. City dwellers will swoon at this tiny apartment that packs an entire two-bedroom house into a single space. The secret? A hidden bed that drops down from the ceiling. And just for fun, we showcased the work of Nathan Sawaya, who makes incredible large-scale Lego sculptures of comic heroes and villains.

Report: Moto X (2015) price leak indicates the device will cost $179.99

motorola-moto-g-3rd-gen-black

2015 is shaping up to be quite interesting as far as Motorola products go. For the past two years, attention largely focused on the flagship Moto X, then shifted focus to the mid-range Moto G, and finally finished off with the entry level Moto E. This year however, seemingly all the talk is touting the features and nuances of the Moto G (2015) due in large part to the substantial leaks that have appeared for the hardware.

Even though we are just days away from the July 28th press event Motorola is planning (presumably) to unveil its new handsets, the leaks just keep on coming. Thanks to a screenshot obtained from a U.S. Cellular inventory management database, we now know what will apparently be the price for the Moto G (2015): $179.99. This is essentially the exact same price last year’s model launched at, which is quite impressive when considering just what the device is said to be packing.

gsmarena_002 Droid Life

According to leaks to-date, the Moto G will have a 5-inch Full HD AMOLED display, come with 2GB of RAM, a 1.7GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 610 CPU, 8 or 16GB of storage, may have water resistance, LTE, and come with Android 5.1.1. It will apparently also be sold on Motorola’s website where buyers can make use of Moto Maker, the first for the G-series.

It will be interesting to see how the Moto G fares, along with the X and rumored X Sport that are said to be announced alongside with this device come Tuesday. Given that these will be the first products launched in the company’s post-Google world, Lenovo might try for a more aggressive advertising campaign or promotional angle to try and garner higher sales. Likewise, if the devices prove to be quite popular, it might spur Lenovo to actively get into the smartphone game in Western markets, using the Moto series as a segue.

Make sure to check back again on Tuesday so you can get all the official news and updates about the new Motorola line-up when it lands.

Microsoft is working on an Android launcher called Arrow Launcher

Microsoft has taken a surprising interest in Android of late with many recognized apps, as well as new apps, making their way onto the platform. Another app to join the new bucket of Microsoft apps to grace Android devices is Arrow Launcher, a new custom launcher that appears to be quite similar to Aviate in that tries to gather important information in the right places to make it easier for you. The three pages that make up Arrow Launcher are People, Apps, and Notes & Reminders – each is pretty self-explanatory, providing a quick and easy way to access things that you need on a daily basis.

Arrow LauncherArrow Launcher also lacks customization at the moment, with no way to add custom icon packs – whether or not this will eventually be added isn’t known. The launcher is obviously in its infancy – officially, it is only in private beta which you can be invited to if you join this Google+ community. Alternatively, if you want to try out Arrow Launcher as it is now, or just don’t want to join the beta, Microsoft has also included the APK for you to try it out – download link is below:

‘Submerged’ sidesteps combat for exploration on PS4 and Xbox One

In case you’ve already finished Journey and are looking for another gorgeous game that eschews violence, Submerged hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in early August. From the sounds of it, the game should be a pretty relaxing affair despite the fact that protagonist Miku is searching a flooded city for a cure for her wounded younger brother. A post on the PlayStation Blog notes that you can explore at your own pace and climb around as you see fit. And as you do, you’ll uncover the tale of how the world came to be flooded and a tale of an equally destroyed family. The game gets its good looks thanks to the absurdly powerful Unreal Engine 4, and I’m feeling a bit of an Enslaved: Odyssey to the West vibe from it, myself.

PC and PS4 owners get the game on August 4th, and if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber you’ll snag a 20 percent discount at launch too. Folks playing on Xbox One, however. have to wait until August 7th before they can play.

Android Authority this week – July 26, 2015

Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet-6

Android fans, this week was all about leaks and rumors. With three hot devices landing over the next weeks, there’s a lot to geek over about! The Galaxy Note 5 now has a reliable launch date attached to its name. A slew of leaks revealed almost everything there is to know about the 3rd generation Moto G, as well as a bunch of details about the next Moto X. We got our first look at the OnePlus 2 and learned a few more details about its camera. Samsung introduced its new flagship tablet series, the Galaxy Tab S2. And finally, Ubik Uno brought something unique to the table, via Kickstarter.

Rumors and leaks are tremendously fun, but it’s important to remember that none of the exciting stuff would be possible without the hard work and technical genius of people working behind the scenes. In this spirit, we at Android Authority want both to celebrate the creativity and skill of Android developers, and to make it easier for you to enter this wonderful world, if you’re so inclined. If you’re an aspiring Android developer or even an experienced one looking to hone your skills, our developer-focused content may help. Also check out our weekly developer newsletter to get resources from across the web straight to your inbox.

Back to what we love most: new devices. Next week sounds like fun! On Monday, OnePlus will unleash into the world its “2016 Flagship Killer”. And yes, that is not a typo! In all seriousness, we’re excited for this device, especially since it looks like it will be just as affordable as the first gen. Motorola’s new Moto G and Moto X are just itching for the spotlight too, and hopefully there are still some surprise left in store. We’re attending both events (Josh in San Francisco, Lanh in New York), so you can expect some mighty fine coverage.

The prize in our weekly giveaway is a living classic. The Galaxy S6 will be remembered as the phone that changed Samsung’s reputation, and now you can stand to win one. Just head over to the sweepstakes page to get your ticket.

Tiny surgical robot can bend and operate on hard-to-reach areas

The coin above wasn’t enlarged to make the pincer-like device look extremely small — it’s really that tiny. That “pincer” is a two-millimeter-thin instrument designed and built by a group of researchers from Vanderbilt University for incredibly precise minimally invasive surgery. It’s pretty comparable to the da Vinci surgical robot, though that one has bigger needles and requires five to eight millimeter incisions. According to the Vanderbilt team’s lead researcher, Robert Webster, the da Vinci works great for abdominal surgery, but it’s not ideal for smaller parts of the body. Unfortunately, “the da Vinci uses a wire-and-pulley system that is extremely difficult to miniaturize any further,” he said.

A perfectly straight probe has limited capabilities, though, so the team spent six years designing one that has a bendable tip that surgeons can steer. Since their attempts to put together several minuscule pieces ended in disappointment, the team decided to change tactics and cut slots out of the tip of a nickel titanium tube to make it flexible. Surgeons can then pull a wire that runs through the tube and is attached to the tip to bend the instrument up to 90 degrees.

The project’s consultant, Professor S. Duke Herrell, believes that bendable wrist makes all the difference in the world:

Adding the wrists to the steerable needles greatly expands the system’s usefulness. There are a myriad of potential applications in some really exciting areas such as endoscopic neurosurgery, operating within small lumens such as the ear, bronchus, urethra, etc. This would allow us to do surgeries that at present require much larger incisions and may even enable us to perform operations that are not feasible at present.

The researchers want to test their creation by using it for a transnasal procedure to remove tumors in the base of the skull and the pituitary gland. That process usually involves opening up the face, but by passing this instrument through the nasal cavity, the patient can recover more quickly and prevent scarring where it will be perfectly visible. Afterward, they aim to find a commercial partner that can help them pass through the FDA, perform clinical trials and get the device to the hands of capable surgeons.

OnePlus 2 leaked AnTuTu benchmark video shows us pretty much what we were expecting

style=”display:block”

data-ad-slot=”8461248232″

As if there wasn’t already enough OnePlus 2 news circulating, we’ve now gotten a OnePlus 2 leaked AnTuTu benchmark to examine. Featured in a pair of videos, what’s alleged to be a OnePlus 2 is put through its paces in the AnTuTu benchmarking app, scoring 49,221 – curiously, this score is lower than that of previous benchmarks, however this might suggest there are multiple variants of the OnePlus 2. This is supported by the fact that the resolution of this device is only 1080p and that it only has 16GB storage; certification at TENAA showed a different story, depicting a device with 1440p resolution and 32GB storage. Check out the videos below:

For those unsure of whether this is the OnePlus 2, previous photos spotted at TENAA suggest that the device in the video is the real deal, as well as the fact the model number of the device is A2001, confirmed to be a variant of the OnePlus 2. Of course, it’s all very confusing as to why we’re seeing different hardware in the certified device and the device in this video, but we’re leaning towards the idea that there are different variants.

Frontback shutdown shows that selfies don’t equal success

Frontback is sad

The selfie craze might not be slowing down any time soon, but that doesn’t mean that self-portraiture products are a license to print money. Need proof? Just look at Frontback. After two years of investment and hype from the likes of Reddit’s Alexis Ohanian and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, the selfie-plus-rear-photo service is shutting down. The social network will wind down as of August 15th, and you’ll have until September 15th to download all your pictures. Frontback’s iOS client will be reduced to a camera app during the transition, while the Android version is disappearing.

As the creators note, there was a big difference between creating a selfie-oriented social platform and sustaining it. While Frontback did rack up 2 million users, it took newcomers “too much time and effort” to understand the app — people tended to use it on an “infrequent” basis after signing up. In other words, it’s not enough to use selfies as a main selling point. While big services like Instagram and Snapchat thrive on “here I am” snapshots, it’s really their simple concepts and strong community features that keep people hooked.

Latest leak of the Motorola Moto G 3rd gen show the full contents of its box

style=”display:block”

The 28th of July can’t get here quick enough. In yet another leak of the Motorola Moto G 3rd gen (2015), the full contents of its retail box have been laid bare for the whole Internet to gawk at. In it, we see the Moto G itself (of course), a number of additional coloured shells for customization, and the usual assortment of power cables and such. From the packaging, we can confirm pretty much everything we already knew about the device – the Moto G 3rd gen will be running Snapdragon 1.4GHz processor, have a 5-inch 720p display, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, 16GB storage (though a 8GB variant is also likely) and the device has a IPX7 rating for water resistance. Check out the leaked images in more detail below:

We’re also expecting Motorola to announce that the Moto G 3rd gen will be available through Moto Maker, which will increase the amount of customization that will be possible with the device’s appearance – though this service will likely still be restricted to the US only. With that, there’s really nothing else that could possibly leak out before the announcement event on July 28th, though I’m sure somebody will prove me wrong.
