ZTE Axon includes free repair for two years with Axon Passport program

ZTE Axon Passport AA

We’re here in New York City where ZTE has just officially announced the Axon, a new smartphone that comes with an all-metal build, front-facing speakers, a Quad HD display and many other notable features for just $449 off-contract. We’ve already gone hands-on with the new handset and pitted it against the competition, but this impressive smartphone isn’t the only thing the Chinese manufacturer announced today.

If you’re thinking of purchasing an Axon, ZTE will throw in a protection program called ‘Axon Passport’. The program, which is included with the purchase of the device, comes with a two-year warranty with incidentals, as well as one year of free shipping. This means that if something happens to your device during the first year, you can send it in and get it fixed at no extra charge whatsoever. If something happens during the second year, you can still send it in to the company to get it fixed, but you’ll have to cover the shipping costs yourself.

Axon Passport also includes 30-day buyer’s remorse, so you’ll be able to send back the phone within the first month at no extra charge if you don’t like it.

We’re still getting more details when it comes to the Axon Passport, but so far it seems like a solid program. It seems very similar to what HTC offers with its Uh-Oh protection plan, which has proven very useful to many consumers since the company unveiled it back in March.

Be sure to check out all of our coverage on the brand new ZTE Axon, and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Samsung may unveil the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus on August 12

Following on from the numerous rumors we’ve already heard regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, the latest one to hit the internet is probably the most important – when the device will actually appear.

According to SamMobile and ‘people familiar with the matter’, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 5 alongside the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus in New York on August 12th, with orders available on August 21st.

In addition to the two handsets, Samsung will reportedly also release their mobile payment system, Samsung Pay, in the US.

The Note 5 is expected to be 5.7-inches with 4GB of RAM with a glass back and thin bezels in silver, gold, black, and white. As for the Galaxy S6 Edge+, it will obviously have the dual curved edged screen and will also be 5.7-inches with a QHD display, powered by a Exynos 7420 and 3GB of RAM.

The devices have apparently been accelerated in their development and release in order to help Samsung drive their declining profits, and also compete with the devices Apple will unveil this year.

acer_chromebook_13_acer_logo_TA

Specifications for an unannounced Acer phone have surfaced online, showing what looks to be a mid-range device.

According to the GFXBench listing, the device, which is labeled as ‘S59′, comes with Android 5.1 pre-installed and a 5-inch 720p display. The camera, though, looks to be the exciting part. This model comes with a 13MP rear camera capable of shooting 4K video. It also has the same 13MP camera on the front with the same video resolution, making for a great selfie camera in addition to shooting high resolution video. The smartphone will come with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and an octa-core 64-bit MediaTek MT6753 processor which provides LTE Cat 4 support, Bluetooth 4.0 and a Mali T720 GPU.

The device should be revealed during IFA 2015 in September.

TapDeck, a smart content discovery app, launches after a successful beta

tapdeck-logo

TapDeck, the app that lets you discover new and exciting content through your wallpaper, has finally launched after a successful beta. Today’s launch update brings with it many new and engaging features, including an all-new design.

Users can now connect to social networks and begin building followers. It’s a unique system in that you can drop pictures to a follower, and that follower will find it on his or her home screen.

You can also “retap” pictures, which will push them to your feed so that all your followers can see them. In layman’s terms, it’s essentially a retweet on Twitter or “share” on Facebook. TapDeck has also gotten a much needed report feature to flag inappropriate content for removal.

Click here to view the embedded video.

If you haven’t used TapDeck just yet, it’s a content discovery system. The developer claims that it transforms your device into a gateway for content discovery. For instance, after setting the app up, you can double tap your wallpaper to swap it out with a new one. Additionally, you can swipe upwards for information and related content of your current wallpaper. It actually works really well and dishes up some interesting content.

If you’re interested in taking TapDeck for a spin, be sure to scan the QR code or hit the download link below.

The 1989 Batmobile and Batsuit are coming to ‘Arkham Knight’

Yeah, you heard that right. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original movie’s theatrical release, the one directed by Tim Burton, Rocksteady Studios is releasing Michael Keaton’s 1989 Batsuit and Batmobile as DLC for Batman: Arkham Knight in August. Of course, that’s assuming you’ve shelled out the requisite $40 for the game’s season pass. In addition to the two iconic skins, the expansion will also feature two new audio tracks and six new character skins — 1990’s Catwoman, Original Batman, One Year Later Robin, Arkham Origins Batman, 1970’s Batman and Arkham Nightwing. Batgirl, unfortunately, is only available as a separate download.

TiVo’s iOS app now sends video to your Apple TV

TiVo Roamio Pro

Have one of TiVo’s DVRs in the living room, but would rather not get another one of its devices just to watch recordings in the basement? If you use Apple devices at home, you no longer have to. TiVo has updated its iOS app with (long, long overdue) AirPlay mirroring support, so you can send your recorded shows to an Apple TV as long as everything is on the same local network. You’ll need a Premiere, Roamio Plus, Roamio Pro or Stream device for AirPlay to even be an option, so don’t get your hopes up if you’re hanging on to old hardware. Still, this a big step forward — you now have an easy way to catch up on missed episodes without having a TiVo-based set-top attached to your TV of choice.

Neil deGrasse Tyson and friends gush over today’s Pluto flyby

At around 7:50am Eastern this morning, NASA’s New Horizons probe reached its closest point to Pluto, around 7,750 miles away, where it unleashed its full array of equipment to give us our best look yet at the dwarf planet. It’s the culmination of a nine-year journey across more than three million miles — and the scary thing is we won’t even know until tonight if it succeeded. To celebrate the occasion, we joined Neil deGrasse Tyson, his colleagues, and a theater full of science geeks at the American Natural History Museum to explore what the New Horizons mission really means. You can check out the full session, as well as some highlights from the event, below.

Tyson, along with Denton Ebel, chair and curator of the AMNH Earth and Planetary Sciences department, and Carter Emmart, the museum’s director of astrovisualization, kicked things off by going over the basics of the mission. New Horizons launched in 2006 as the first NASA mission dedicated to exploring Pluto, which followed years of failed lobbying efforts by scientists and the cancellation of another mission. It’s main goal is to map the geology and chemical composition of Pluto and its largest moon Charon, as well as get more information about Pluto’s atmosphere. But NASA also has a slew of other goals in mind: It’ll map the surfaces of Pluto and Charon with high-resolution pictures; search for additional moons outside of the five we already know of; search for a ring system around Pluto; and perhaps most intriguingly, it will try to determine if Pluto and Charon share an atmosphere.

“To see a distant object for the first time is among the oldest emotions humans have ever had… Ever since we’ve left the cave…” Tyson said, following New Horizon’s close encounter with Pluto (at 54:27 in the video above). As momentous as the occasion was (naturally, the audience erupted in cheers), it also involved plenty of imagination from everyone involved. We were celebrating based on estimated timing from NASA and a virtual look at New Horizons and Pluto via OpenSpace, not a live feed of information. The spacecraft can’t send and collect data at the same time, so we’ll have to wait for confirmation tonight that it’s still working, and we won’t see any actual data until tomorrow.

“We’ve reached another zone of our reality, of our universe,” said astrobiologist David Grinspoon. He noted that New Horizons is the first “post-human” planetary encounter — it used to be that only the privileged few in mission control could celebrate, now anyone with internet access can virtually follow along.

Frances Bagenal, New Horizon’s co-investigator, said she hopes the mission will inspire us “to go back out and explore,” adding, “just because we’ve checked off Pluto doesn’t mean we should stop.” Tyson echoed that sentiment, saying he’d rather think of New Horizons as the last reconnaissance of the solar system’s nine planets, and the first exploration of the Kuiper belt, the far-off territory that includes Pluto and Eris (the dwarf planet that convinced scientists to demote Pluto’s planetary status).

A few takeaways from the event:

  • New Horizons is the fastest spacecraft ever launched by NASA, traveling at around 37,000 miles per hour.

  • It’s not fast enough to surpass Voyager 1, though, which has been hurtling through space since 1977 and has picked up quite a bit of velocity along the way.

  • Pluto’s distance from the sun isn’t the only thing that makes it so cold: Its high albedo (sunlight reflectivity) means it sends back most of the light that actually reaches it.

  • Tyson asked why NASA chose to make New Horizons a flyby mission, rather than one that will hang around Pluto for extended study. Bagenal said a big reason was fuel — you’ve got to take more if you want to stay near a planet. It’s much easier to fly past it and get as much data as you can. And of course, you have the added benefit of traveling farther out.

NASA will give us an update on New Horizons’ health in a live stream tonight at 8:30pm Eastern. But you’ll have to wait until 3pm tomorrow for the first bounty of images to hit.

T-Mobile’s new family plan offers four lines of service with 10GB of data each for $120

T-Mobile logo Shutterstock

T-Mobile has just announced a new family plan that aims to give customers more data for a cheaper price point. The new Simple Choice Family Plan offers two lines of service for $100 per month, which includes 10GB of 4G LTE data for each line. Each additional line costs $20 more per month, making the standard price for this four-person plan a low $140 per month. Each line includes unlimited talk and text, as well.

To make this plan even better, T-Mobile will give you the fourth line for free, with no expiration date, as long as you sign up before Monday, September 7th (Labor Day). So if you decide to sign up soon, the total cost of your plan will cost just $120 per month, which isn’t a bad deal in the slightest. Oh, and if 10GB somehow isn’t enough for you, T-Mobile will also let you double your data for $10 more per month for each line.

Normally family plans offer steep discounts on the monthly bill, but require users to share a pool of 4G LTE data. This can prove troublesome in certain situations, especially if your family member goes over their allotted portion. With the new Simple Choice Family Plan users don’t share data, which is arguably the way it should work.

This offer also includes past Un-carrier promotions such as Data Stash and the ability to use 4G LTE and voice calling in Canada and Mexico at no extra cost. This news comes after the carrier announced its new Jump! On Demand program that allows users to upgrade their smartphones up to three times per year.

If you’re interested in checking out these new plans for yourself, head to this link to get more information. The plans go live Wednesday, July 7th.
