A few days ago it was announced that the Photos portion of Google+ was going to be shut down on August 1st in favour of its spin-off app, Google Photos. Apparently there has been a bit of backlash to the announcement with people apparently concerned about losing Photos functionality in Google+, enough that head of Google Photos Anil Sabharwal has needed to come out and clarify some changes coming with Google Photos. In a statement made on his Google+ page, Sabharwal says:

“1. The great photo and video sharing service that’s part of Google+ is unaffected. You can continue to post photos and videos, and your followers will be able to comment and +1 as before. No change.

2. All of the photos, videos, and albums you have already shared on Google+, including their posts, comments, and +1s are also unaffected. An easy way to find these is to visit the Photos tab of your Profile page.

3. The private photo management component of Google+, which includes backup, editing, creations, private album management (album management for shared content is still available on Google+), and sharing to other apps, is being replaced by Google Photos.

I sincerely appreciate for many of you #3 is still a hard pill to swallow. And I promise we don’t take decisions like this one lightly. The reality is that maintaining both Google+ Photos (the private photo management component of Google+) and Google Photos poses several challenges. Most notably, it is confusing to users why we have two offerings that virtually do the same thing, and it means our team needs to divide its focus rather than working on building a single, great user experience. “

It does look like everything should continue business as usual after August 1st, but then again I don’t use the Photos functionality in Google+ enough to know its nuances too well. Is anyone still concerned about these changes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Galaxy Note 5 launch reportedly set for August 13

samsung-galaxy-note-4-first-look-aa-6-of-19

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus smartphones have leaked a lot over the past few weeks but unlike most smartphone launches, the rumours don’t seem to conflict too much. One thing that has been accepted as almost-fact is that the Samsung will defer away from its usual IFA release schedule to launch its new handsets early and get a jump on Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6 refresh.

We’ve previously heard that the Galaxy Note 5 could make its launch on August 12th with a release a few days later on August 21 and a new report from the Korean media has seemingly confirmed this, although suggests that the launch will take place on August 13 in New York City. The reason for the change? According to BusinessKorea,

It is believed that Samsung tries to not only check Apple, which threatens its number one position in global smartphone market share, but also capture consumers before the release of the iPhone 6S in Sept.

The report goes on to also confirm that the Galaxy Note 5 will be joined by the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus at the event, with Samsung eager to release both to the market before Apple has even announced its new devices. Both smartphones will bear resemblance both the Galaxy Note 4 (in size) and Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge (in design and specs) as Samsung aims to deliver an unique big-screen smartphone experience.

Based on previous leaks, it’s suggested that the Galaxy Note 5 will have a 5.7 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display and will be powered by an Exynos 7422 processor with 4GB RAM, 32/64/128GB storage and a 16MP rear camera with OIS. The Note 5 will also gain a redesigned S-Pen stylus that will more closely resemble an actual pen and this will be one of the biggest differences between the Note 5 and the S6 Edge Plus as the latter won’t come with the S-Pen.

Instead of making this year’s large curved screen phablet a successor to the Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung have modelled the handset after the Galaxy S6 Edge. As such, the curved phablet will have a dual curved display and very similar specs to the Note 5 save for a slightly inferior Exynos 7420 processor and 3GB RAM (instead of 4GB).

Both smartphones look set to launch in just a few short weeks in New York and Samsung will likely have a few more surprises in store for us (as the company always does). Its first round screen smartwatch – the Samsung Gear A – is expected to be one of the products announced alongside the two handsets and is likely to run on the company’s Tizen platform, including an all-new UI designed for round devices.

What do you think of the latest information on the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus? Will you be buying one? What’s your opinion on Samsung decision to bring the launch forward? Let us know your views down below guys!ds

32GB Xiaomi Mi4i to go on sale in India on July 28th

Xiaomi-Mi-4i-review-10

Xiaomi launched its Mi 4i specifically designed for the Indian market earlier in the year and many were anticipating that the company would launch a model with more than 16GB storage. A page on the Xiaomi website now shows that the company is planning to launch a 32GB Mi 4i, with a slightly larger price tag of Rs 14,999 ($235).

The rest of the Mi 4i’s hardware remains unchanged from the prior launch. The handset features a mid-range Snapdraon 615 SoC, 5-inch FullHD display, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera and a 3,120mAh battery. There’s also dual SIM support, LTE and Android 5.0 on board.

The original 16GB Mi 4i launched with a price tag of Rs 12,999 ($205), so there is only a minor price difference for customers who need a little bit of extra space.

Xiaomi is planning to hold a sale for the 32GB model at 9am on July 28th. Eager customers can already pre-register for the sale over on the Mi website. It looks like the smartphone won’t be sold through e-commerce retails like Amazon and FlipKart this time, at least not yet, perhaps due to a limited quantity of stock. An open sale could appear at some point in the future.

The 32GB Xiaomi Mi 4i will be exclusively available in the Dark Grey colour option.

Starbucks joins forces with The New York Times to bring selected content to your phone

Starbucks Galaxy photo

It isn’t all that long ago that Starbucks announced its partnership with Spotify, allowing baristas to influence the music playing in-store. Today, we have news that Starbucks will join forces with The New York Times to bring selected news and content to Starbuck’s official app from 2016.

A total of 15 news articles covering social, business and political issues will be delivered directly to the Starbucks mobile app. Purchasing digital and print subscriptions will earn customers Gold Stars, which can then be exchanged for free food and drink by the 10 million My Starbucks Rewards loyalty members. Starbucks has partnered up with The New York Times and Spotify, what company would you like to see them partner up with next?

Full Press Release:

SEATTLE, July 21, 2015 – Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced an elevated digital news experience for the Starbucks® mobile app, the result of an expanded relationship with The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) which publishes one of the most widely-read and authoritative news publications in the world.  As part of the agreement, The New York Times top news of the day as well as a selection of other articles addressing key social, political and economic issues will be available for free via the Starbucks® mobile app for the 10 million My Starbucks Rewards® loyalty members. These customers will also have the opportunity to earn “Stars” through paid digital and print subscriptions to The New York Times.

“We see a future in which the Starbucks retail experience seamlessly extends to the mobile devices our millions of customers carry with them every day,” said Howard Schultz, chairman and ceo of Starbucks. “Our relationship with The New York Times is the perfect example of bringing this vision to life.  We have proudly sold millions of copies of the paper in Starbucks stores for more than a decade, and are excited to bring this experience to the next level by enabling Starbucks loyal customers to take the best of The New York Times with them wherever they go, whenever they want it.”

Beginning in the first half of 2016, as part of this Starbucks digital news experience, the daily and weekend briefings from The New York Timeswill be delivered to My Starbucks Rewards® loyalty members through the Starbucks® mobile app as well as other relevant articles from The Times recommended by Starbucks.  Additional articles recommended by Starbucks will come from other media sources over time.

Mark Thompson, president and CEO of The New York Times Company said, “We have enjoyed a long and fruitful association with Starbucks and we’re delighted that this agreement will further extend our digital relationship. This is another in a series of arrangements we have made recently in order to ensure that The Times continue to expand the reach of our journalism to new and interesting pools of readers. We’re particularly happy that Starbucks has also put in place an appealing incentive to turn these readers into subscribers.”

Free digital access to 15 articles per day on NYTimes.com is already available in many U.S.-based Starbucks stores through the Starbucks Digital Network. The New York Times newspaper is also widely distributed in Starbucks stores across the country.

“This expanded relationship with The New York Times allows us to directly engage our most loyal customers with the latest and most relevant news of the day,” added Kevin Johnson, president and coo of Starbucks.  “Through these types of relationships, we are well on our journey to provide our most loyal customers with the opportunity to earn Stars everywhere and redeem them for food and beverages in Starbucks stores.”

My Starbucks Rewards® loyalty members will be able to “Earn Stars Everywhere,” through both Starbucks and non-Starbucks purchases.  Starbucks recently announced a multi-year deal with Spotify, which first introduced this new opportunity for Starbucks loyalty program members to earn Stars through purchases made with other companies. As part of today’s announcement, My Starbucks Rewards customers will also earn Stars by purchasing paid digital and print subscriptions toThe New York Times. Customers will then have the ability to redeem those earned Stars for food and beverages at participating Starbucks® stores.

The agreement with The New York Times links more than 7,000 company-operated Starbucks stores in the U.S. with the 10 million My Starbucks Rewards® loyalty members in a new and highly relevant way. Furthering its plan to build one of the most robust digital ecosystems of any retailer in the world, Starbucks continues to find new ways and platforms to engage and stay connected with its customers.  Providing its most loyal customers with the most relevant news of the day from one of the most trusted news authorities, The New York Times, is one more way that Starbucks enriches its customer relationships with benefits that are meaningful and unique.

Google clarifies the fate of Google+ Photos after announcing its shutdown

google_photos_072215

Google had announced earlier this week that it will be shutting down Google+ Photos as a way to “ensure everyone has the best photos experience”. After facing backlash from Google+ users, head of Google Photos Anil Sabharwal posted a statement on Google+ to clarify a couple points regarding the announcement.

Google is indeed shutting down the service gradually, however certain aspects of it will still remain. Users will still be able to share, comment and +1 photos and videos as they always have. Their photos will also still be accessible via the Photos tab of the Google+ profile page. The biggest change is found in the private photo management component of Google+, which includes backup, editing, creations, private album management and sharing to other apps. This service will now be handled by Google Photos.

Nail Sabharwal also gave a side note to further explain the decision Google has taken;

“The reality is that maintaining both Google+ Photos (the private photo management component of Google+) and Google Photos poses several challenges. Most notably, it is confusing to users why we have two offerings that virtually do the same thing, and it means our team needs to divide its focus rather than working on building a single, great user experience. “

Google+ Photos will officially shut down on August 1st

Play ‘Star Wars: KotOR 2’ in 5K, on your Mac

Star Wars Logo

So this whole year of Star Wars thing apparently includes dormant video games too, who knew? Despite the fact that the lesser of the two Knights of the Old Republic role-playing games released all the way back in 2004, it recently got a pretty huge update. Now KotOR 2: The Sith Lords is playable on Mac and Linux, available in the Mac App Store, has achievements, widescreen support and will even run in 4K and 5K resolution. If it’s a console-like experience you’re chasing, the game supports controllers too, including PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads. The title’s Steam page teases mod support via Steam Workshop and even a “Force special effects” option in the game’s menu. To find out exactly what the latter entails, you’ll likely have to download it for yourself.

OnePlus 2 passes through China’s TENAA

oneplus-2-tenaa

We are edging ever closer to the launch of the OnePlus 2, so perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised to see the handset passing through China’s TENAA certification center.

The nice thing about TENAA is that it also gives us a look at the handset. From the images we can see the adoption of a new physical home button, which is presumably where the fingerprint scanner will be housed. Rather than opting for a rear scanner like Huawei has done in the past, a scanner located in the home button is something that we are used to seeing from the likes of Samsung.

On the back we can also spot the new camera module lower down the handset, which, if earlier reports are accurate, appears to feature a laser auto focus system just underneath the lens. LG’s G3 and G4 smartphones make use of laser technology to allow for much faster camera focusing for nearby objects.

side-view

Other confirmed OnePlus 2 specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, reversible USB Type-C connection and a 3300mAh battery, at a cost of under $450. The phone is also said to have a 13 megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture.

The OnePlus 2 is expected to launch on July 27th, just five days away, and will be broadcast in virtual reality for those who own a little Google Cardboard or another VR headset. We should know all of the official details in just a few days’ time.

Pentagon confirms Iraq drone crash that surfaced online

There are a lot of hoaxes on the internet, but if you see images of a drone that looks like the one above, lying motionless in the middle of the desert, then you can be sure those aren’t fake. Pentagon has admitted to BuzzFeed that the pictures of a drone crash that recently started circulating on social media websites are real. Those photos were posted on Twitter by Iraqi journalist Steve Ishak, who told the publication that he got them from a follower who, in turn, got them from local villagers in the country’s Samawa province. “We can confirm an MQ-1 crashed on its way to its recovery base in Iraq,” military spokesperson Major Genieve David said, adding that the UAV malfunctioned due to “loss of communication.”

The images themselves corroborate the major’s claim, because it doesn’t seem like the plane was shot down, and the damage it incurred at least looked consistent with a crash. MQ-1 Predator Gray Eagle drones are part of the U.S. Army’s Aviation Modernization Plan, cost around $21 million each and can carry payload, including Hellfire missiles, weighing up to 1,075 pounds. David, who didn’t elaborate on what the broken drone was used for, said the broken UAV wasn’t carrying any weapon. At the moment, Pentagon is working with Iraq to recover the MQ-1’s metallic carcass, even though the drone might never fly again.

Sony’s phone arm is working on drones

Sony Corp. Headquarters And Products Images Ahead Of Business Strategy Announcement

Sony is teaming up with with a robotics company it’s already invested in, and it’s looking to get on board with that whole drone thing. ZMP (which aims to make the “robot of everything”) develops automated driving technologies — although they’ve stuck to solid ground until now. The collaboration will be called Aerosense — and will launch next month. According to Sony’s announcement the collaboration will bind Sony’s camera, sensor and comms tech with ZMP’s automated driving and robotics knowhow. Sony Mobile will hold the majority share (by a sliver of a percentage), but the team-up’s end result is to develop and make autonomous drones for image capture, connecting all that output to the cloud. Don’t expect to see a branded Sony drone anytime soon, however: it’s looking to business clients, with these eventual drones tasked with “measuring, surveying, observing, and inspecting” sometime next year.
