The OnePlus 2 has one million people registered to its invite list

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

It might have taken OnePlus six months to sell 1 million OnePlus Ones, but it looks like that number of people have already signed up to their invite list for the OnePlus 2 even before the device has been released, the biggest indication yet that OnePlus may have hampered its sales last year with its oft-awkward invite system. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily imply that OnePlus is assured 1 million sales, but it might as well be the same thing given the early going.

The OnePlus 2 was officially announced earlier this week, and despite the glaring absence of some features like wireless charging NFC, delivered on their promise of a flagship-spec device at an affordable price. The jury’s still out whether it is the “2016 Flagship Killer” – probably because the jury is fawning over the Moto X Style – but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to sell out like hotcakes in the short term. If you’ve yet to register for an invite, you better get on it now otherwise you’ll be well back in the priority list – register for your invite here.

What do you think about the fact 1 million invites have been reserved already? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

FireChat gets offline private messaging

FireChat, that offline messenger that Hong Kong locals used during the height of their pro-democracy protests, now has off-the-grid private messaging capability. If you recall, you could only use its public “Nearby” tab if you want to talk to people in your area without depending on an internet connection. Now, you can contact someone in private — provided that you’re not the only two people using the app in your town. In order for the PMs to go through, messages hop on whatever’s available: multiple local networks, WiFi, Bluetooth and even the internet. According to TechCrunch, FireChat uses the store-and-forward technique, wherein your message is sent to the nearest available network and kept there until the next one becomes available. Don’t worry, though: PMs will be encrypted to prevent other users from reading them.

The app’s developer, a firm called Open Garden, told TC that messages can be delivered within 10 minutes or so, if at least five percent of a city’s population uses the service. Obviously, it would work a lot better if you’re in a crowded event, say a music festival, and the app’s use is encouraged. But if you’d like to give it a shot anyway, you can get the latest version of FireChat from iTunes or Google Play.

Twitter’s new homepage is designed to lure in new users

Twitter’s making its experimental homepage visible to all visitors who aren’t logged in, the company has confirmed to BuzzFeed. This new landing page shows potential users what the website is all about at a glance. See, it might be your favorite social network, but a lot of people still don’t “get” it — for instance, we’ll bet more people in your family use Facebook instead. In its latest earnings report, Twitter revealed that it only has 316 million monthly active users, whereas Facebook almost has 1.5 billion (yes, with a B) by now. The company’s likely hoping that displaying celebrities’ accounts and tweets based on popular topics can entice curious folks to just give in and sign up for an account.

OnePlus 2 already has over a million people waiting for an invite

oneplus 2 launch aa (91 of 93)

Earlier this week OnePlus unveiled the successor to the OnePlus One, the aptly named OnePlus Two. Less than a day later, Motorola turned around and unveiled its own flagship at nearly as aggressive of a price point. With increasing competition, will the OnePlus 2 find the same level of success as the original? Obviously it’s way too early to answer that question, but so far things look pretty good.

According to OnePlus, the waiting list for invites has already passed the one million mark. Considering the OnePlus One sold roughly 1.5 million units during its entire life, that’s rather impressive. Of course, this is assuming that all the folks that requested invites will actually buy the phone once the invite is received. Nonetheless, the OnePlus 2 is off to a good start. What’s important now is that OnePlus works to avoid some of the issues that caused it hiccups with the OPO, including odd contests and mishandled PR incidents. It also needs to ensure that the invite process goes as smoothly as possible.

Starting at $329, the OnePlus 2 remains one of the cheapest flagship level phones on the market, even if devices like the ZTE Axon and Motorola Moto X Style are only marginally more expensive and offer a few advantages over the OP2. What do you think, plan on picking one up? If not, what upcoming device are you currently most excited about?

Show Press Release
NEW YORK, July 30, 2015 – On the heels of launching the OnePlus 2 via the world’s first virtual reality keynote, the excitement around OnePlus has continued to build to a crescendo with over one million users now registered for an invite to purchase the device – all in less than 72 hours.

In comparison, the original OnePlus device has sold over 1.5ql million units to date, an extraordinary testament to the growth of the brand since its founding December 2013. Following the global success of last year’s OnePlus One, the launch of the OnePlus 2 reaffirms the brand’s commitment to the highest level of craftsmanship in the industry today. The OnePlus 2 boasts top of the line specs, one of the best cameras on the market, beautiful design and the adoption of state of the art technology. It’s clearly resonated with consumers as they’ve been quick to snap up a place in line for a reservation to purchase one for themselves.

OnePlus will be giving fans across the globe an opportunity to physically experience the OnePlus 2 at pop-up events in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, New Delhi, Bangalore, and Jakarta on July 31. Team members from OnePlus will be on hand to demo the OnePlus 2 to fans in person; those users will have an opportunity to receive invites and other exclusive gifts.

Additional information on both the new OnePlus 2 and the pop-up events is available on http://www.oneplus.net.

More than 1 million people are on the OnePlus 2’s reservation list

oneplus_2_company_logo_closeup_partial_blur

The OnePlus 2 received mixed reaction from critics and consumers upon being announced on Monday night. OnePlus is calling its new device the “2016 flagship killer” despite the phone missing features that are pretty common for today’s flagships. And the OnePlus will only be left behind when devices arrive this fall and early next year with those features at the very least. However, that has not stopped more than one million people from being added to the reservation list on OnePlus’ site. Continuously refresh the invites page, scroll to the bottom, and you will notice that people are joining the reservation list at a rapid pace.

Remember that this is merely a reservation list. It does not mean that more than one million people have actually pre-ordered the OnePlus 2.

DU Speed Booster is Boost Your Device Needs

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Battery consumption is probably the main concern when purchasing a new device, but I would say another concern that has been big issue in the Android Community, is the speed your device performs. No one wants lag. And with each release of a new flagship, OEM’s try to put the best CPU’s under the hood to handle our everyday lives. But a powerful engine in a new phone isn’t always going to determine whether or not your phone runs smoothly. Many other factors come into to play and the makers of the DU Battery Saver (number 1 Android battery saving app) have made an app to boost your phone’s performance. In comes the DU Speed Booster app.

DU Speed Booster optimizes your Android device and is a master of cleaning out unwanted garbage slowing down your phone. Sounds like a simple cache cleaner, doesn’t it? Well, it is a little more than that. Not only does it clean out your phone and speed it up, Speed Booster also provides you with an antivirus security feature, app manager, broadband speed test, and works with the DU Battery Saver. Speed Booster also comes equipped with a floating widget that gives you the percentage your CPU is running and by clicking it will free up some of that RAM so your phone doesn’t feel gassy and bloated.

Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 5.27.43 PM

When you first open the DU Speed Booster, you will see a pretty, futuristic looking UI that gives you the number your CPU is running and tells you whether you should boost it or not. When you click the circle, the device will clean the trash and shut off running apps you don’t need to get you back to 100 and excellent. You can also hit the Phone Boost button to get more details on what is currently running on your device. It will also give you the option to enable the SPEED+ENGINE, which will basically break it down a little more, and be more beneficial to you. It’ll show how much RAM you have free and how much percentage it can free the RAM to accelerate your device. The graphics and animations make aesthetically pleasing to the eye I must say. Love it when app developers take the extra time for our experience.

The Trash Cleaner will break down memory, cache, and apps, on how much memory they are swallowing up, while the App Manager makes it easy to uninstall those apps you don’t need anymore that might be drinking that memory. The Antivirus feature will scan through all your apps if you have some time for it to do so, which is a nice added bonus.

Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 5.27.56 PM Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 5.28.08 PM

The Speed Test feature I had a little bit of a problem with. I love that they added the feature to the app, but it doesn’t seem to work correctly, or it can’t handle my Verizon FiOS. When running the speed test, it shows my network running noticeably lower then it does on a separate speed test app. Not a huge complaint. I didn’t download this app for the speed test.

Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 5.28.04 PM

The Speed Booster widget is probably my favorite feature of the DU Speed Booster. It constantly updates on your memory number, and once you click it, a floating window appears and you can simply click BOOST for it to quickly free up some memory. There is also a toggle bar for WiFi or screen brightness, as well a section for your games. When you click a game icon, it will boost the game first, then open it. It’s really nice actually, and when moving the widget on your home screen, you get an entire screen that shows a spaceship that you can drag where ever you want, or you can drag it to the bottom of the screen and your memory will get freed up once again. Only this time you get a cute little animation that is fun.

Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 5.27.49 PM

I recommend you giving DU Speed Booster a try if you feel like there’s too much clutter happening in your device. Check out my video review down below to see it all in action. Let us know if you picked it up, and how much you like it.

OnePlus asks “What Would You Do For The 2?”

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Oh, you do you, OnePlus. Despite the debacle that surrounded the launch of the OnePlus One which saw quite a lot of people destroy their phones in the hopes of getting the device, OnePlus has decided once again to engage in a viral marketing campaign that relies on its fans to embarass promote themselves for the opportunity to get their new device, the OnePlus 2, for free. Titled “What Would You Do For The 2?”, OnePlus has put up a new webpage that lets you submit a link to an example of your devotion to OnePlus. Among the ludicrous tasks you can attempt are:

CHALLENGES

Take over the world

1. Pimp your ride
Drive around in your OnePlus themed car – show the world you Never Settle.
2. Project the OnePlus logo in a busy area in your city
Silently show everyone what it means to Never Settle.

Show your love for OnePlus

3. Organize a flash mob with at least 50 people
The power of crowds! Grab your friends, your family, and everyone you know.
4. Create a OnePlus-themed dance and get 10 people to post videos of them doing the same
Who doesn’t love an impromptu dance party!

Show us your talent

5. Perform something awesome
Do you have any hidden talents? Show it to us!
6. Write a poem or sing a song about why you deserve the OnePlus 2 and perform it in public
For the creative ones. Sing your heart out!

Shout your love for OnePlus

7. Showcase your love for OnePlus in your social media profiles
Not a performer? Make your entire social media profile OnePlus-themed.
8. Go run in the middle of a live performance or event while wearing a OnePlus t-shirt
For the wild ones. Would you do it for the OnePlus 2?

Give back to the community

9. Create an app for OnePlus fans and share with the community
Calling all coders! Show us something new to do, perhaps soon on your OnePlus 2.
10. Contribute to a local community project with your tech power
Technology can help the world in all kinds of ways. Become a role model and show some thought leadership!

Admittedly, there are a few options that aren’t completely bonkers, like creating a community app and helping the local community, but I can’t imagine these being the most popular among all the options. From a marketing perspective, it’s kind of deviously genius to get other people to help promote your device, so we’ll just leave it at that and see what comes of it. If you do want to enter OnePlus’ contest, you now have just over 5 days to submit your entry – you can submit your entry here.

What do you think about OnePlus’ latest marketing stunt? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Pocket invites you to try beta features, starting with recommendations

On the heels of last month’s collaboration with Mozilla, Pocket has even more tools for you to try. In fact, the save-it-for-later repository wants you to test new features before they officially arrive in the app or on the web. Pocket’s Beta Channel will give you a look at what the company has been working on and the chance to offer feedback. The program is available for Android, iOS and web versions of the software and there’s already a new feature to put through its paces. First up for eager testers: recommendations. The tool puts a second feed next to the list of items you’ve chosen to stash, pulling in “top content from the billions of items saved to Pocket.” The app then makes selections for you based on your reading habits so that the chances of you missing something good are drastically reduced. Recommendations is just the first feature that’s coming to beta testers, so if you opt in, expect to see more new items soon.

NASA space telescope discovers Earth’s closest rocky neighbor

NASA researchers working with the Spitzer Space Telescope announced on Thursday that they had indeed found the closest rocky exoplanet to our own. It’s a tiny burg called HD 219134b that’s just 21 light years from Earth in the Cassiopeia constellation, near the North Star. It was first spotted with the 3.6-meter Galileo National Telescope in the Canary Islands before being confirmed with the Spitzer. Even though the planet is larger than Earth, researchers only noticed it as it transited across the face of its parent star (astronomers look for the star to dim then brighten again as evidence of an orbiting planet). Unfortunately, there’s basically zero chance that we’ll find aliens there as 134b orbits far too close to sustain life.

Still, the planet itself is a treasure trove of astronomical data that will keep scientists busy for years. “Transiting exoplanets are worth their weight in gold because they can be extensively characterized,” Michael Werner, the project scientist for the Spitzer mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), said in a statement. “This exoplanet will be one of the most studied for decades to come.”
