NASA shows off the International Space Station in glorious 4K
NASA’s International Space Station team recently got a big camera upgrade in the form of RED’s Epic Dragon, and it’s more than a little eager to show off what this high-resolution gear can do. The agency has started posting 4K videos (sorry, no 6K yet) that show what life is like in orbit in exceptional detail. You can make out the finer details of clouds on Earth, for instance, or see every last nuance of a zero-gravity water bubble.
The camera tech isn’t just for drumming up interest in spaceflight — it’s practical, too. The slow-motion recording (up to 300 frames per second) is good for fast-moving events like docking procedures, and the super-sharp imagery should reveal more about the outcome of science experiments. RED’s cams might not be limited to space, either. NASA is currently testing the Epic Dragon’s usefulness for science and vehicle tracking at the Marshall Flight Center, so you might see more of its operations unfold in 4K before too long.
