Apple Maps Vehicles to Begin Surveying France and Sweden in August

Apple has announced that its fleet of vehicles collecting street-level mapping data in multiple countries will begin surveying France and Sweden throughout August. The vehicles will be driving through the Malmö and Stockholm metropolitan areas in Sweden and Île-de-France region of Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne in France.

Apple Maps Vehicle
Apple Maps vehicles will also begin surveying Tennessee later in August, raising the total number of U.S. states that Apple has driven through to 30. Apple began collecting street-level mapping data in 13 more U.S. states this month, including Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Apple confirmed in June that it is driving vehicles around the world to collect data to improve Apple Maps, and the mapping imagery is almost certainly being used to create a Google Maps “Street View” competitor. Apple Maps vehicles are also taking photos of businesses and storefronts in major metropolitan areas to replace current imagery provided by third-party sources such as Yelp.

Apple has posted a complete list of new areas in the United States, France, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom it will be surveying throughout August on its Apple Maps vehicles website, including extended coverage of unmapped areas in California, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Samsung’s new monitors have Wireless Charging baked in

Samsung_SE370_Wireless_Charging_Monitor

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have built-in wireless charging, so why not a monitor? That may well have been Samsung’s thinking when it comes to its newly announced SE370 Full-HD monitors. And you have to admit, it makes sense, many of us have our smartphones nearby when we sit at the computer. Wireless charging built-in to the base of the monitor would be more than handy, allowing us to keep our compatible handsets topped up as well as keeping the clutter of extra cables to a minimum.

Samsung_SE370_Wireless_Charging_Monitor2

The SE370 monitors are available in 23.6-inch (S24SE370DL) and 27-inch sizes (S27SE370DS), both offering wireless charging using the Qi standard. Just place your Qi compatible phone on the circular charging area on the base and an LED will light up to notify you that wireless charging has begun.

Besides built-in wireless charging, both monitors use a PLS (Plane-to-Line-Switching) panel with AMD’s FreeSync technology that synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the frame rate the AMD graphics card that is pushing the pixels from the PC.

Other specifications include:

  • Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) 300 cd/m2
  • 4ms Response time
  • Contrast: 1000:1
  • 178° Viewing angle
  • 1 x HDMI (1.4), 1 x DisplayPort, 1 x D-Sub
  • Features: Wireless charging, Eco Saving Plus, Magic Brightness, Magic Upscale, Game Mode, Eye Saver Mode, Flicker Free, FreeSync, Image Size

Details of pricing and availability haven’t been made available as yet, although its quite possible that more will be unveiled at the IFA in Berlin from September 4-9. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

LG launches Lollipop-powered LG Gentle flip phone

LG-Gentle-01

Flip phones were all the rage many years ago and LG‘s design team was clearly feeling a little nostalgic when it designed and created the LG Gentle flip phone. Rolling back the years to a previous generation of devices, the Gentle brings the design of old with the specs of modern handsets by using Android Lollipop to power the handset.

The handset is perfect for elderly customers, with a large keypad perfect for those with larger hands and fingers or with poor eyesight. The keypad is combined with a 3.2 inch touch-enabled display offering 480 x 320 pixels, which equates to a modest 181 pixels per inch density. The handset is powered by a 1.1GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM, 4GB internal storage (that can be expanded using microSD), LTE support and a 1,700mAh battery.

LG Gentle is powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop and presumably, LG has made some modifications in the interface to ensure it works properly with the keypad and the smaller display. The specifications on the handset certainly won’t win any awards but given it’s an entry-level phone that’s priced at around $170, the handset should prove quite popular.

The LG Gentle is not confirmed for a launch outside South Korea but it’s unlikely the handset will launch in Europe or the USA, which is a shame as it’s certainly unique and it could definitely have some market appeal amongst those upgrading from a feature phone to their first smartphone. Would you buy the LG Gentle for yourself or someone in your family? Moto G (2015) price tag and spec sheet spotted in India

motorola-moto-g-3rd-gen-black

Just yesterday, leaked details from a US Cellular inventory database suggested that the upcoming Moto G 2015 will cost $179.99. A similar leak has now appeared in India, pointing to a roughly similar launch day price in the country.

A listing spotted at popular e-commerce retailer FlipKart suggests that the new Moto G will cost Rs. 11,999 (around $185), which is virtually identical to the US price spotted the other day. This price is also around $15 cheaper than the Moto G 2014’s launch cost of Rs. 12,999 ($200).

moto-g-2015-leak

The FlipKart specification sheet, which has since been taken down, also gives us a detailed breakdown of the smartphone’s internal hardware. There is mention of a 5-inch 1280×720 display, 1.4GHz Snapdragon 410 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory with 32GB microSD card support, a 13 megapixel rear camera, 5 megapixel front facing camera and a 2,470mAh battery. However, there is no mention of the rumored IPX7 rating.

These details pretty much match up with various rumors this month, and suggest pretty good hardware for the price, as is typical of Motorola these days. The page’s image also looks like the leaked hands-on images that appeared last week, so we probably have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the handset now.

The Moto G (2015) is scheduled to launch at events taking place in London and New York tomorrow, July 28th, alongside a new Moto X model.

Xperia C5 Ultra will have bezel-free display

sony logo mwc 2015 6

The Sony Xperia C5 Ultra has previously made the rounds under the codename Sony Lavender and the unannounced handset’s manual has made the rounds, revealing a number of details about the handset. First, the handset will be the first Sony device to sport a bezel-free display and secondly, it will launch with the model number E5553.

Xperia-C5-Ultra-User-Guide_2

The bezel-free display confirms what we’ve already expected – thanks to previously leaked photos – and means we’ll see a handset where Sony has pushed the boundaries of its design to new highs. One particular thing that has been quite disappointing about past Sony flagships – which the Xperia C5 Ultra isn’t likely to be given its mid-range billing – is the big bezels around the display and the Xperia C5 Ultra could be a sign of things to come in future flagships.

Xperia-C5-Ultra-User-Guide_4

The manual has also revealed the controls and external hardware on the handset, including a camera with LED flash and loudspeaker on the front of the handset along with a dedicated camera button, microSD card slot and nano SIM card slot on its side. Like other handsets, the volume buttons can also be used as a camera zoom button.

Xperia-C5-Ultra-User-Guide_5

What of the rest of the handset specs? Well very little is actually known but what we can expect from Sony’s next mid-range device is a 5.5-inch Full HD handset and given the bezel-free display, we can expect the handset to be smaller than other similarly sized handsets. Also on board is expected to be a MediaTek MT6752 SoC, 2GB RAM, 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front facing snapper, which is accompanied by the aforementioned LED flash.

Samsung announces monitors with built in smartphone wireless charging

Samsung wireless charging monitor

Samsung is big on wireless charging these days, having adopted both PMA and Qi standards with its Galaxy S6 smartphone. The company has now announced two new monitors, which feature a built-in wireless charging dock to power up your handset.

There are two models in the range, the 24-inch S24E370DL and 27-inch S27E370DS. Both feature Qi wireless charging ports at the base, so you can charge any smartphone which features this particular charging technology.

The two monitors have a resolution of 1920×1080, a wide viewing angle of 178 degrees, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. The smaller 24-inch model has a peak brightness of 250 cd/m2, while the larger monitor can reach as high as 300 cd/m2. The ports on the back include one HDMI 1.4 connection, a Display Pot, and one D-Sub.

For the gamers out there, the S24E370DL and S27E370DS both come with AMD’s FreeSync technology. This aims to eliminate screen tearing when frame rates dip, by matching the monitor’s refresh rate to the output of your GPU. The displays also comes with a fast 4ms response time.

Samsung has not listeed any countries or dates for the release of its new monitors yet, but we might hear more at the upcoming IFA electronics show this September.

Best Buy will sell the Apple Watch from August 7th

Until now, if you wanted an Apple Watch, you had to buy it in one of three places: online, at the Apple Store or at your nearest high-end luxury goods boutique. If none of those places are convenient, then you’ll be happy to learn that the wearable will also be available from Best Buy on August 7th. The store will be the first big national chain to stock the device, and in keeping with its mass-market appeal, won’t be stocking the pricey Edition model. It will, however, have both the 38 and 42mm versions of both the Sport and Watch models in 16 different configurations — not to mention a large supply of nightstands, screen protectors and third-party straps not approved by Apple.

It’s another step on the road to global domination for the Apple Watch, since despite not really being widely available in its first nine weeks of life. The company has already pulled in roughly a billion dollars worth of sales and could barely make the hardware fast enough to keep up with demand. If Best Buy is ready to announce a launch date for nationwide sales, then those initial supply issues must have eased. Oh, and given that the device is believed to account for 75 percent of the smartwatch market — in nine weeks — then Apple’s going to have to buy some bigger warehouses to store all of the money it’s about to make.

Argos now lets you trade-in old phones and tablets

What do you do with old gadgets that you no longer use? Give them away to relatives, or throw them in the bin? Argos is the latest UK company to jump into the trade-in business, offering cash for your unwanted phones and tablets. Plenty of smartphone trade-in companies operate on the web, such as Envirofone and Mazuma Mobile, but few have a high street presence like Argos. The company hopes that customers will prefer the convenience of walking into a store, getting a quote and then immediately receiving a gift card that can be used to buy something new. As the Guardian reports, Argos wants to expand the scheme to include cameras, laptops and other electrical devices in the future. Just like Game and CeX, however, its success will inevitably hinge on the prices being offered to consumers. If Argos is too stingy, the convenience will be irrelevant — people will simply hold onto their devices or offload them through other avenues such as eBay.
