OnePlus 2 invites launched, attracts over 235,000 reservations

OnePlus-2-registrations-235-110

Ahead of its OnePlus 2 launch in under 24 hours’ time, OnePlus has opened invites for its new smartphone and like the OnePlus One, demand looks to be incredible with the new handset living up to the billing of its predecessor.

The company claims that its invite system has been improved since the first handset last year with 30 to 50 times’ more inventory at launch and it may need them as on the reservation list for invites, the company has hit over 230,000 registrations in 24 hours. Based on some feverish refreshing of the page, the company has made it seem that they are receiving around 300 reservations every minute and the number seems to be rising; in the time it took to write this post, the reservation list swelled from 226,000 to 235,000 people.

According to the company, this is just a reservation list to have the chance to get an invite if any are left unused; think of it as a waiting list for the invite system. Like the OnePlus One, the quickest way to get an invite to buy the new handset is to ask someone who has bought one as they’ll be able to share an invite, although invites won’t be available straight away.

Beijing Police Shut Down Large-Scale Factory That Made Over 41,000 Counterfeit iPhones

Beijing police have shut down a large iPhone counterfeiting ring within the city that had managed to produce more than 41,000 fake versions of the flagship smartphone, some of which even managed to reach the United States (via Reuters). All told, the ring’s counterfeit production had grown to be worth as much as 120 million yuan (about $19 million).

The police have arrested a total of nine suspects thought to be involved directly in the counterfeiting operation, all due to a combined effort to enforce stricter counterfeit and intellectual property laws in China. Of the nine arrested were a 43-year-old man and his 40-year-old wife, whom police believe ran the counterfeit scam under a gadget maintenance shop front before the operation was raided in May.

The information is just coming out today, however, thanks to a social media post from the public security bureau in Beijing, which said the couple had set up the factory in January, beginning with as many as six assembly lines and “hundreds” of workers. The raid, which took place on May 14 thanks to a tip from United States authorities, ended with the police seizing as many as 1,400 counterfeit smartphones and “large quantities” of accessories.

The counterfeit iPhone — and now Apple Watch — market has grown in China since the device’s debut, and only became more prevalent a few years back when entire counterfeit Apple Stores were discovered by a blogger who posted photos of the false retail stores online. China remains a big target for Apple, with the company stating during last week’s earning call that the country is positioned to be its “largest market in the future.” It’s already begun to affect changes in the design of its products, with Tim Cook confirming that Chinese consumer tastes are the main reason behind the new gold color options of the iPhone, MacBook, and Apple Watch lines.

Apple to Expand Retail Presence in India With 500 Authorized Mobility Resellers

Following a focus on expanding its presence in the greater China area, sources speaking with NDTV Gadgets have confirmed Apple is looking to increase its foothold in India as well through the launch of a new retail store program. The new initiative — dubbed the Authorized Mobility Resellers program — will reportedly see the company open 500 retail store locations across 12 cities in India.

apple_store_genius_bar_official
The stores will showcase a heavier focus on Apple’s mobile offerings, like the iPhone and iPad, along with “related third-party accessories.” Apple has already signed up over 100 partners it wants to work with on the AMR program and has even begun to earmark specific locations it wants for the new retail sites. The company will also allow the program to discount iPhones below retail price, according to the information gained from NDTV Gadgets.

Apple products are rarely sold at a discount across the world and there was a time when India was pretty much the same. However, in recent years Apple has changed its distribution model and has been happy to turn a blind eye to retailers discounting the iPhone, MacBook Air, and other products as it looks to gain marketshare. NDTV Gadgets has learnt that Apple will follow a similar model with AMR partners, which means they will be able to sell below MRP.

Apple will hire a contractor to be sure that all of the sites adhere to the company’s strict guidelines regarding size and design, but afterwards the company will hand back over reigns to the third-party resellers it’s partnering with to operate and run the stores. The exact timeline of the AMR program remains unclear, however, with no word from Apple on whether its presence in the country could be seen as early as this year or not.

Report: Samsung to promote the S6 Edge Plus ahead of the Note 5

samsung galaxy logo mwc 2015 2

Samsung’s unique Edge display has proven rather popular this year and industry sources from Korea are suggesting that the upcoming Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will be receiving the bulk of Samsung’s manufacturing and market resources when it launches alongside the Galaxy Note 5 later this year.

The sources state that Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will see a familiar global rollout, but that production of the Note 5 will be more limited. Note 5 stock will instead be reserved for markets where previous generation Note sales have been traditionally strong, such as South Korea and the US.

Since the original unveiling of the Galaxy Note Edge, there has always been the possibility that Samsung might choose to move its high-end devices over to the Edge display, once production capabilities were fully realized, while gradually phasing out flat panel designs. If the rumors are correct, this appears to be what Samsung has planned.

Furthermore, additional production capacity now means that Samsung can meet the full demand for Edge display devices. With the launch of the Galaxy S6, the company could not produce enough Edge variants to keep up with consumer appetites and apparently overestimated demand for the regular Galaxy S6. This miscalculation has hit the company’s profits this year.

samsung galaxy s6 vs s6 edge aa (33 of 39)

Samsung wasn’t able to keep up with early demand for its S6 Edge, but should have enough production to focus on the S6 Edge Plus.

Samsung is likely attempting to avoid the same mistake from earlier this year and wants to prevent the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Note 5 from affecting each other’s sales. Removing the Note 5 from its less popular markets should do the trick.

This could also have the added benefit of saving on marketing costs, as Samsung won’t have to try to differentiate the two devices in some regions. In markets without a Note 5, Samsung can simply market the S6 Edge Plus as a larger version of its earlier flagship phone.

However, this strategy hinges on customers preferring the Edge display over the regular Note 5, which may not be the case. The higher cost associated with Samsung’s Edge display may not go down well with all consumers, who may have preferred an option to pick up a slightly lower cost regular Note 5.

Other than the curved display, hardware specifications between the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Note 5 are very similar. Both are rumoured to have a QHD display, 16 megapixel camera, 3000mAh battery and 4GB of RAM. A Snapdragon 808 SoC is expected for the Note 5, while an Exynos chip may appear in the S6 Edge Plus.

Do you prefer the curved Galaxy S6 Edge Plus over the Note 5? Do you think that Samsung would be making a mistake by moving away from the Note brand name in some markets?

Android One Lava Pixel V1 now official

lava-pixel-v1-Android-One

Following yesterday’s leak, the Lava Pixel V1 smartphone has now been made official. The handset is the latest phone in the Android One line-up and boasts some rather decent specifications that should help Android One compete with new low-cost handsets arriving in countries like India.

One of the biggest features is the handset’s a nice metal back and sides, along with a rather sleek looking design, which is a marked improvement in build quality over Android One’s previous range of low cost smartphones. The Lava Pixel V1’s specifications match up with yesterday’s leaks, including a 5.5-inch 720p display, 2GB of RAM, and a quad-core processor. Here is the full list of specifications:

  • 5” HD IPS display
  • 13 MP rear camera images (software-enhanced 8 MP sensor)
  • 8 MP front camera images (software-enhanced 5 MP sensor)
  • 3 GHz quad-core processor (Mediatek MT6582)
  • Full HD (1080p) recording and playback
  • 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable to 32GB)
  • 2650 mAh Li-Polymer battery
  • 3G dual-SIM
  • Android 5.1 Lollipop

The lack of 4G LTE support is a little disappointing. The camera specifications are also a little interesting. It’s an 8 megapixel rear sensor and 5 megapixel front camera, but a software implementation seems to be laying two images over one another for a higher resolution image. We’ll have to wait and see how the actual quality turns out. Of course, the big selling point is fast updates directly from Google as soon as a new version of Android become available.

Google also has a new ad to go along with the launch of the Lava Pixel V1, check it out below.

The Lava Pixel V1 is now available from a selection of retailers in India, including FlipKart and The Mobile Store. The retail price is Rs. 11,349 ($175), which puts the handsets right up against the likes of the popular Moto G and handsets from Xiaomi. Time will tell if the Pixel V1 has done enough to stand out from the pack.

Is anyone buying one?

A PS4 mouse and keyboard, just in time for ‘Black Ops 3’

Hori Tactical Assault Commander 4

If you’re an FPS fan, this might be the perfect controller for you. Hori’s Tactical Assault Commander 4 is a keyboard and mouse setup for PS4 that attempts to mimic a PC control system. The means the DualShock 4’s left analog is mapped to a WASD-style configuration, while the right analog is controlled by a mouse. The rest of the DualShock’s buttons and triggers are mapped to the appropriate spots, and there are a couple of additional functions like programmable buttons, a “snipe mode” that changes mouse sensitivity and a walk button for, we assume, walking rather than running.

The Tactical Assault Commander 4 is, as the name suggests, the sequel to the equally rad Tactical Assault Commander 3. Any accessory lives and dies on its quality, and although reviewers praised the basic idea, the consensus was that mapping an analog to a mouse just didn’t work particularly well last time around. Hopefully the manufacturer has used the four years since the release of the last model to perfect its idea. It’ll launch this October, just before FPS season starts in earnest. British and Japanese retailers are listing it for pre-order at around $120-$130 converted, so we’d expect it to cost something similar when it’s released in the US.

LG’s got a flip phone that runs Android Lollipop

Flip phones aren’t just for retro hipsters and the elderly anymore… well, actually they kind of are. But they’re super popular in Asia, and now you can get one that’ll run the latest apps: LG’s Gentle flip phone. The faux-leather adorned device is running a bleeding edge version of Android 5.1 Lollipop and packing 4G LTE. Otherwise, it’s not exactly a power-user’s dream with a 3.2-inch 480 x 320 screen, 3-megapixel rear camera, 4GB of (expandable) storage and 1GB of RAM. But for just 20 million won ($175) it would make a fine second phone, provided you live in Korea — it’s unlikely to come here, and similar flip phones cost a fortune to import.
