Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 may not come with auto-ejectable S Pen

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_S_Pen_Button_Closeup_TA

Last week, patents belonging to Samsung for an auto-ejectable stylus were uncovered. Many believed that the technology protected by those patents would be implemented into the Galaxy Note 5. Those hoping for this feature may have to wait a bit longer as a new report claims that Samsung’s patents for an auto-ejectable stylus have no effect on the Galaxy Note 5’s design.

It seems the Galaxy Note 5’s S Pen similar to previous iterations of the stylus. What the phone will likely bring, though, is a revised design, new colors and more accurate pressure sensitivity. Sources have also confirmed that the Galaxy Note 5 will come with a embedded battery pack sealed off by a metal chassis made of glass on the front and back and an all-metal rim. This points that the Note 5 will follow design cues from the Galaxy S6.

The Galaxy Note 5 could be coming on August 13 alongside the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and a new Tizen smartwatch, called Gear A, may debut as well.

NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 now getting Android 5.1 Lollipop update

NVIDIA Tegra Note 7

The NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 was a great tablet, but it didn’t pick up much traction in such a competitive market. Its low price and decent specs managed to catch some eyes, though, and we are sure some of you are still loving the stylus-centric pad. The good news is you are about to enjoy it even more!

People across the web have been reporting the NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 is getting an update to Android 5.1, which will make it a device worth of envy for many of us touting newer tablets that haven’t yet gotten this sweet Lollipop treat.

nvidia-tegra-note-7-updateAccording to the screenshot in hand, the 446 MB OTA update comes with more than just the newer Android OS version (and all that Android 5.1 entails). There’s also improvements to the exclusive DirectStylus features, as well as audio, display, network and app compatibility fixes.

The update hasn’t reached everyone just yet. As it goes with all software upgrades, this one is rolling out gradually. If you don’t see a notification and checking manually is giving no results, just sit tight and try not to smash your touchscreen – it will come soon!

How many of you guys have actually seen this update show up? Is it treating you well? Let us know in the comments.

OnePlus announced that they would be using an “improved” invite system for the OnePlus 2, notably adding the possibility of registering for an invite via their website. Well, that website has just gone live, so you can register for a OnePlus 2 starting today. Based on the information provided on the landing page, the terms of the invites will be exactly the same as before – receive the update, register yourself on the OnePlus website and use it within 24 hours. The last part of that is a legacy from the OnePlus One, and I’m not really a fan of it – especially considering OnePlus says you could be waiting three weeks before your OnePlus 2 even ships.

All the same, the addition of a registration process does make it a bit easier for people who don’t want to grovel on forums for an invite – assuming the new system works. OnePlus is due to announce the OnePlus 2 in the next few days at a VR event for all to see. If you’re hoping to be one of the first to get the OnePlus 2, then you better register for you OnePlus 2 today – hit the link below to get to the registration page:

Instagram update speeds up editing, posting process on Android

instagram_app_icon

An update for Instagram on Android, taking it up to version 7.3.0, has been spotted and is apparently rolling out to users. This new version appears to change the process one follows to edit and filter pictures before posting them on the service.

Users of Instagram are familiar with the three steps one follows when making a new post. After selecting an image, the app gives users a chance to crop the image, then apply some filters, and finally add a caption and some other optional information to the post.

The new process takes users directly to a new screen with most of these steps combined on this single screen. The selected image itself can be swiped on to move between filters which are displayed in real time as they are selected. A small edit button is located in the bottom left corner to access the traditional editing options. A tag button is present in the bottom right corner for tagging other users. Below all of this is a slider of nearby locations that can be selected and options for cross-posting to other services. There is also an entry field for the caption.

You can check out a video below showing how this new interface works. Use the download links to get Instagram or check to see whether the update is available for your account.

Fan-made ‘GTA V’ interactive map app puts Rockstar’s to shame

Grand Theft Auto V really seems like the gift that keeps on giving. The latest present? An unofficial map app (Android, iOS and web) that’s been updated with collectibles locations from the current-gen releases like Peyote plants that let you play as sharks, eagles and more — yes, flying around as a bird of prey is bizarre as it sounds. The differences between this and the official app are pretty major, too. As VG24/7 reports, you can add personal notes to the map, track your collectibles progress and even switch between atlas and satellite views of the terrain. Future plans include making streets searchable by name. Interested? Hit the source links below to grab it for your device of choice.

OnePlus 2 shows up running AnTuTu benchmark in video

oneplus-one-aa-4-of-34

The announcement date is set, we know most of the specs and the VR announcement app is ready for download. Now all there’s left to do is waiting for Monday to get all the details on the OnePlus 2. Have you had enough leaks and rumors? We know we haven’t, and today we are bringing you what could be the last leak on the device before it is announced.

The OnePlus 2 has shown up in video! Given, it’s not the most detailed or crisp depiction around. Nor does the 4:48-minute video show you much of the phone, other than the front. It doesn’t really raise any red flags, though, which should be a good thing for any leak. Regardless, you won’t watch this contraband video to see how the phone looks; this is more about learning how powerful the upcoming phone can be.

galaxy-s6

The reported OnePlus 2 is shown running AnTuTu’s benchmark. After some minutes of testing, the device managed to score 49221. This puts the OnePlus 2 right in line with competing phones like the Nexus 6 and Galaxy Note 4, but below newer ones like the HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6. This is a bit weird, because the OnePlus 2 is confirumed to come with a Snapodragon 810, but we can’t speculate too much on this just yet.

The benchmark manages to corroborate some specs we were already expecting, or had some suspicions on. This handset happens to have Android 5.1.1 with Oxygen OS, 16 GB of internal storage and a 1920x1080p FHD display.

Here’s the video, just in case you want to see the phone go through the benchmark process from beginning to end. Remember this is still considered a rumor, so you should treat it as such. Don’t hold your breath on any of this information. We will know all the details this Monday, so keep it tuned to our home page!

Huawei G8 officially unveiled, featuring a fingerprint scanner and metal design

Huawei_G8_rear

The Huawei G8 has been released in China as a mid-range device with a metal design. The handset comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD display and inside sits the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC and Adreno 405 GPU. The device offers two storage options: one with 16GB of internal storage and 2GB of RAM, the other with 32GB of on-board storage and 3GB of RAM. Both models come with expandable memory up to an additional 64GB.

On the rear of the G8, there is a 13MP rear-facing camera while a 5MP camera sits on the front. Huawei included a fingerprint scanner on the back of the G8 just below the camera. And making sure that the G8 is powered throughout the day is a 3000mAh battery.

The software running on the G8 is Android 5.1 Lollipop behind Huawei’s own Emotion UI.

The Huawei G8 comes in three color options: White, Gold, and Black. The two models will cost $370 and $343, respectively. Huawei has yet to comment on the handset’s availability outside of China.

Google Cardboard app for OnePlus 2 launch now available

oneplus one aa (15 of 34)

July 27th is just around the corner and for us geeks that can only mean one thing. We are about to see the launch of the highly anticipated OnePlus Two, a device that, like its predecessor, should challenge industry standards and offer an amazingly powerful smartphone at an incredibly low price.

We are all desperately awaiting the day we get to see the OnePlus 2. The interesting part is that we will all get to experience the launch in a completely different way. The Chinese startup is live-streaming the launch in 360-degree VR (virtual reality). This means you will be able to see the announcement the way we usually do, right in front of the stage (who knows, maybe even on it).

Gear VR S6 (4 of 6)

It’s a very interesting type of launch no other major manufacturer has attempted before. Want in on the action? You can start getting ready now by downloading the official OnePlus 2 Launch app, which has just become available.

Don’t have a VR headset yet? Remember there are plenty of options out there. Even free ones, so there’s really no excuse.

Amazon wants to build drive-up grocery stores

A drawing of a proposed grocery store that's likely from Amazon

If you enjoy the luxury of ordering groceries online but would rather not wait at home for your food deliveries, Amazon might soon come to your rescue. Silicon Valley Business Journal understands that Amazon is working on a drive-up grocery store in Sunnyvale, California (a possible concept rendering is shown here) that will rely solely on internet orders — you’d schedule pickups instead of wandering aisles. Think of it as an AmazonFresh depot that could save you shipping costs while adapting to your schedule.

Amazon isn’t commenting on the project, and it’s not clear just how many of these stores will pop up. The Sunnyvale experiment is likely to expand to other areas in Silicon Valley, but there’s no certainty that it’ll ever rival a big chain like Safeway. However, there’s no question that the concept makes a lot of sense for Amazon. It eliminates many of the headaches associated with shipping food directly to your door (how do you deliver a mix of fresh and frozen foods, for example?) while giving you an incentive to skip traditional supermarkets. You’d miss out on the joy of discovering tasty treats at the store, but you also wouldn’t have to spend more than a few minutes getting your weekly sustenance.

Where are the innovative phones?

A

s a technology lover, I spend quite a bit of time reading about, learning about, and looking at technology, especially phones. I even look back at phones that existed far before today’s versions, and if you look back, you have to wonder where the magic has gone.

We are halfway through 2015 and have seen dozens of new phone announced, but for some reason, we are not impressed. Browsing the comments of tech websites, I see people posting comments along the lines of “2015’s smartphone lineup is a disappointment” or “Maybe next year’s model will be better”. To a certain extent, I understand what these commenters are saying. I wanted this company to improve more on their previous model, and I did not want that company to remove features that were useful in exchange for looks.

But when you look at the reality of it, new phones are no longer exciting, and innovation has all but died. Now companies are creating phones that look so similar, they can almost be passed off as twins. To illustrate what I am talking about, let’s take a look at some of the 2015 offerings from the big players in the game.

Samsung

s6_en_s6_edgeSamsung is the biggest player in the Android smartphone market right now, and their phones’ designs are starting to show it. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge sacrificed several features that fans loved in exchange for a more appealing design. I am referring to their idea of removing expandable storage and removable batteries, two things they helped differentiate them from their competitors.

If that was not enough, recent leaks seem to point to a similar fate for the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+. In fact, it appears that these two phones are just going to be larger copies of the S6 and S6 Edge. While some may argue that the design of the S6 Edge is innovative, the lack of actual functions the curved screen provides makes it more of an aesthetic change rather than something which truly influences how consumers look at phones.

HTC

htc-one-m9_silver_rightWhen HTC released the One m7, people fell in love with the premium design and superb BoomSound speakers. These two big changes caused people to stop and think about the importance of speakers on a phone as well as the build quality. Since then however, HTC’s design language has basically stalled in midair.

The m8 made some marginal improvements on the m7, but people were prepared to be amazing by this years m9. Unfortunately, HTC did not live up to the high expectations that many had for them and released a slightly improved m8 for their flagship.

Sony

Sony_Xperia_Z3+If there is a company that fits this category almost perfectly, it has to be Sony. In the past, Sony has impressed with its attempts to challenge the phone game and innovate.

The Xperia Play is one unique phone that comes to mind when the word innovative comes to mind. Sure, it was not extremely successful, but Sony’s attempt to break the mold must be respected and the Play was a pretty sweet phone it’s own right. Even the Xperia Z line is innovative with complete waterproofing in a sleek chassis.

Like many other phone companies recently, Sony has also begun to stall. Sony’s mobile division has been doing poorly and many expected the Xperia Z4 to be the turning point in Sony’s mobile career; however, Sony might have made a turn for the worse. The Z4 (or Z3+) disappointed many who were waiting for Sony to unveil a completely redesigned Xperia only to find an exact replica of the Z3 with improved internals.

With this being said, there are still companies out there that are creating innovative phones that attempt to change the way we use them.

Google

project ara____Project Ara is Google’s attempt to create modular phone. With interchangeable parts, this would allow for a truly customizable phone that could allow people to create the phone of their dreams.

It could also be used in creating inexpensive phones for countries that cannot afford the high prices of current flagships. While Project Ara is not available yet, Google’s commitment to the project gives hope that we will see the finished product within the next year.

YotaPhone

yotaphoneThis phone is not talked about much or seen around the United States, but the idea behind it is something quite brilliant. The YotaPhone comes with a second, e-ink display on the back that can be used for reading books, webpages, and other things that do not require a full color display.

Not only does this help save battery, but it also helps take strain off of your eyes which can happen from staring at a back-lit display for too long. While its popularity has not taken off, the innovative idea behind the YotaPhone is one that should be discussed and used.

Samsung

frontsidebacknoteYes, Samsung is able to make both lists. While they may be more stagnant today, there was a time when Samsung attempted to shake up the phone industry. One of the biggest (literally) ideas that came from Samsung was the start of their Galaxy Note line.

These gargantuan phones varied drastically from the smaller phones consumers were comfortable with and used to. However, the added features and benefits of the larger screen made the Note line extremely profitable for Samsung.

As other companies saw Samsung’s success, phablets became a more common occurence. Even Apple, who was the last big company to create larger screen phones, followed the idea created by Samsung and released their own phablet, the iPhone 6 Plus.

So what does this mean for the current slew of smartphones available? Has innovation died and all we have to look forward to is the same phones released every year with slightly upgraded internals?

The answer, only if we let it. As consumers, we have the ability to make companies work for us and create the phones that we want. When a company released a phone that looks different from others out there, we should not ridicule them for going against the grain. Instead we should celebrate them and remember that wacky, innovative ideas are what have brought us the smartphones of today.

And if we do nothing but criticize companies attempting to break the smartphone mold, we will never get the smartphones of tomorrow.
