Amazon beats quarterly estimates, posts $23 billion in revenue

amazon-accounts-hackedAmazon posted their Q2 earnings for 2015, and the internet retail giant smashed analyst estimates. The company pulled in $23.18 billion in revenue with a profit of 19 cents per share, which is significantly better than their estimated 14 cent loss per share. Amazon’s share prices obviously soared, and ended up well above $500 per share.

Amazon’s operating expenses were still as high as ever, chewing up almost all of their revenue for the quarter. At this point, that’s pretty typical for Amazon, but it did help that the company’s web services grew about 81% from last year, bringing in $1.82 billion. That’s still a small part of Amazon as a whole, but it’s a quickly growing portion of their business.

North America still accounts for Amazon’s biggest source of revenue, growing 26% this year, compared to international growth of just 3% year-over-year.

Amazon is projected net sales of between $23.5 and $25.5 billion next quarter, and between a $480 million loss and a $70 million profit.

Games on sale span several genres and include titles like BADLAND, Shadowmatic, Goat Simulator, and Radiation Island. More than half of the apps on sale are games, and many are worth purchasing at just $0.99.

Separately, Apple is also celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, highlighting a wide range of various accessibility apps organized into categories like “Vision,” “Hearing,” “Speech, and More. This App Store section doesn’t feature apps on sale, but it is a great way to find specialized apps.

Apple’s App Store promotions typically last for a full week, from Thursday to Thursday, so the 100 apps sale should last until next Thursday when the App Store is updated again.

NVIDIA updates original Shield Portable to 5.1

For those of you with the NVIDIA Shield Portable, you may have received an update for Android 5.1 already, as of today, June 23rd.

This update fixes a problem with not being able to read books in the Google Play Books app, and it also removes apps and features not supported by this version of the OS. Specifically, that would be the games Sonic 4, Episode II, and Expendable: Rearmed, the built-in Android browser, and Miracast.

On the flip side, the Shield Portable receives Chromecast support, which, of course, allows you to push audio and/or video content to a TV via the included HDMI dongle.

Miracast, which can be thought of as HDMI over a Wi-Fi connection, does mostly the same thing. In one sense, it’s plausible to drop either it or Chromecast because of the redundancy caused by the devices’ similarities. However, this does force those who still want Miracast’s functionality and do not have Google’s digital media player to either stay with Android 5.0 or update to 5.1 and buy a Chromecast.

The Moto G shows itself in a promotional video along with key specs

A Brazilian retailer, Americanas, decided that it would be cool to post their entire promotional video of the Moto G (3rd Gen) up on Youtube.

The video quickly was picked up by major tech blogs and removed from Youtube just as quickly. Luckily, one of those blogs was kind enough to upload the video up onto MediaFire for our continued enjoyment. (Thanks Droid-Life!)

Thanks to them, we also have a translation of the video.

Surprises abound to the new generation of Moto G, one of the most beloved smartphones from Motorola. The new line of Moto G is available on models Moto G 3rd Generation Color HDTV , Music, Cabernet, Navy Blue and Pink.

Get ready for this powerful configuration: Lollipop Android 5.1.1 , 4G speed technology , full HD screen 5 -inch , 410 Snapdragon processor Quad Core 1.4GHz , 8GB of internal memory for the basic 16GB version or the other , rear camera of 13MP and 5MP front .

From this, we get a clear picture of the specs of to ship out with the Moto G.

  • Full HD 5″ screen (likely 720p)
  • Snapdragon 410 SoC
  • Quad Core 1.4GHz
  • 8GB internal memory (16GB model availible)
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 5MP front camera

With this new data, we can probably assume that the Moto G will come with a single GB of RAM because all rumors of the Moto G coming with 2GB of RAM also claimed that it will come with a Snapdragon 610 SoC.

There was no indication that the Moto G will be coming with a Moto Maker option that was leaked a few days back, but that could just be because Moto Maker won’t be available for the Moto G in Brazil.

The video does state that the phone will keep the swappable back that was thought so highly of in the first two generations of Moto Gs, so it seems unlikely that they would offer Moto Maker and swappable backs.

The video does include the IPx7 rating, so the Moto G still has that going for it; however, the Kyocera Hydro WAVE might be the better bet if you are looking for a rugged budget phone and are not too concerned with picture quality.

Overall, the Moto G looks to be a great budget device for someone who needs something that will just work. The camera specs are looking pretty good too with a 13MP main shooter. That would put it on par with the Moto X (2014)’s primary camera. Hopefully, Motorola amps up their camera game and the Moto G (3rd Gen) will be capable of photos superior to those of the Moto X (2nd Gen).

The higher specced camera also give us high hopes for the camera that will come with the Moto X (3rd Gen). Ideally, the new Moto X camera will out preform last year’s Moto X by a long shot and give current flagships like the Galaxy S6 and LG G4 a run for their money!

This origami-inspired emergency bridge accordions into shape

Eat your heart out, GI Joe Bridge Layer. A team from the Graduate School of Engineering in Hiroshima University has developed a temporary and portable bridge design that unfolds itself like an accordion across damaged or missing spans. It’s being touted as the “fastest, largest, strongest and lightest” expanding bridge on Earth.

It’s called the Mobile Bridge Version 4.0 (MB4.0). Measuring nearly 70 feet in length, the MB4.0 is light enough to be transported via trailer, yet takes barely an hour to fully deploy. In a pinch, the bridge can be unfurled in as little as five minutes, thanks to a scissoring, modular design that extends the lanes in tandem with the outer superstructure. That scissoring action is intentional and is actually based on an origami technique that minimizes buckling. The system doesn’t even need existing foundations to operate, which makes it ideal for disaster response operations.

The team debuted the MB4.0 at the Japan Society of Civil Engineers back on June 23rd and hope to continue developing the technology. There’s no word on when the portable bridge will be available for actual emergency situations.

AT&T releases its Q2 2015 earnings, showing another solid performance

att_logo_large

AT&T has reported its second quarter earnings, showing minor improvement compared to the same time last year. The company generated $33 billion in overall revenue, up 1.4% since last year. In addition, the carrier’s stock price per share increased sixty-nine cents this year compared to only sixty-one cents last year. AT&T also mentioned it added 2.1 million wireless subscribers, 410,000 were postpaid and 331,000 prepaid. The remaining 1 million came from connected cars.

Operating income also exceeded some expectations. The carrier landed approximately $5.7 billion in the green and that is up 1.8% since one year ago. AT&T’s only downside came under net income, probably the most important area for a business, dropping from last year’s $3.5 billion to only $3 billion. The company is having trouble keeping up with the growth of other major U.S. carriers such as T-Mobile and Verizon.

The Moto X 3rd gen gets spotted again, this time in white and gold

Yesterday, we got a pretty good look at what is supposedly going to be the Motorola Moto X 3rd gen, and today, we’re getting another look at it, but this time in different colours. Today’s leak comes courtesy of Google+ user hellomotoHK who posted up an image of a Moto X 3rd gen in white and gold, an interesting combination of colours and significantly different to the mish-mash of grey that we have been seeing lately. What this likely signifies is that the Moto X 3rd gen is going to get even more customization options in Moto Maker, not only letting you change the colour (and presumably material) of the back cover, but also the colour of the metallic edge around the device.

This is also supported by an earlier leak provided by @evleaks which suggested that the Moto G 3rd gen would also be available with customization options in Moto Maker, also with the ability to change its edge colour – whatever is available for the Moto G, we would assume is also available for the Moto X. Of course, we’d expect this kind of customization to come at a little extra cost, but we shouldn’t have long to find out as Motorola is expected to announce the devices on July 28th.

Moto G (2015) promo video leaks

xox_moto

Right on the heels of its Moto Maker options being posted, a promotional video for the upcoming Moto G (2015) went live prematurely. The actual video was taken down rather quickly but you can still view it here. Brazilian retailer Americanas apparently thought it was fine to release the video containing the handset’s main specifications.

According to the leaked video, the new Moto G will have a 5-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 8GB/166GB of internal storage, a micro SD slot for an additional 32GB, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, interchangeable back covers, IPX7 certificaiton, and Android 5.1.1.

The beginning of the video translates to:

Surprises abound to the new generation of Moto G, one of the most beloved smartphones from Motorola. The new line of Moto G is available on models Moto G 3rd Generation Color HDTV , Music, Cabernet, Navy Blue and Pink.

Motorola will introduce the Moto G (2015) to the world on July 28.

Flickr’s revived Pro tier gives you ad-free photos and better stats

Flickr on a Galaxy S6 Edge

When Flickr rolled out its big redesign a couple of years ago, it also did away with Pro accounts. Unless you were a legacy user, your only real paid options for the photo service were to kill ads or up the storage — not so hot if you were a serious shutterbug. However, you’ll be glad to hear that Flickr just brought Pro back. The new tier is more expensive than before (the same $50 per year as the ad-free version), but promises to one-up some of the features you’ve seen in all of Flickr’s previous premium offerings. It removes ads for your own browsing as well as for anyone who visits your images, and there are improved stats that help you understand which photos are drawing eyeballs. You also get a 20 percent discount on Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photography subscription (no small amount if you regularly edit pictures) and lower-cost shipping for Flickr merchandise like Wall Art.

There’s one thing you won’t get if you sign up for a fresh Pro account, though: unlimited storage. You’ll still have unrestricted uploads if you hold on to the older Pro service, but you’re otherwise facing the same 1TB ceiling as free users. That won’t usually pose a problem, but it could create headaches if you’re uploading 50-megapixel photos every day. Even so, this is good news if you treat Flickr as more of a work portfolio than a haven for your Instagram shots.
