Somebody at Brazilian retailer Americanas.com obviously has a happy trigger finger as their promo video for the Moto G 3rd gen was posted up today – predictably, it’s since been taken down, but the clever fellows over at Droid-life have a copy of the video hosted somewhere – you can check out a copy of the promo video here.

Before the video was taken down, the following blurb could be seeing in the video description (translated, of course):

“Surprises abound to the new generation of Moto G, one of the most beloved smartphones from Motorola. The new line of Moto G is available on models Moto G 3rd Generation Color HDTV , Music, Cabernet, Navy Blue and Pink.

Get ready for this powerful configuration: Lollipop Android 5.1.1 , 4G speed technology , full HD screen 5 -inch , 410 Snapdragon processor Quad Core 1.4GHz , 8GB of internal memory for the basic 16GB version or the other , rear camera of 13MP and 5MP front.”

Unsurprisingly, there’s not much in there we weren’t already aware of, though we’re interested to know why the amount of RAM wasn’t specified – rumours currently disagree with some saying 1GB with others saying 2GB. Also absent is any mention of the Moto Maker options for the Moto G, but maybe it’s because our Portuguese isn’t very good.

‘Doom’ multiplayer test run starts ‘in the coming months’

It’s time to put that Doom alpha code from your PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order to use if you already haven’t redeemed it. Publisher Bethesda’s announced that access to the Hell-bound shooter’s first multiplayer test will open up “in the coming months.” The post on Bethblog says that if you bought the game digitally there’s no need to hassle with redeeming keys as you’re automagically entered into the selection pool, too. Let’s say you didn’t buy the latest Wolfenstein though and only pre-ordered Doom after witnessing its big reveal at E3 last month. Well, in that case you have to wait for Doom‘s beta and that won’t happen until next year ahead of the game’s scheduled when it’s done spring release window. Folks attending id’s Quakecon in Texas this weekend, however, get a leg up on everyone else and have access to a pre-alpha build of the multiplayer mode.

talon-twitter-logo

Talon for Twitter has begun receiving the update to version 3.0, bringing with it a whole host of new features and improvements. One of the biggest improvements Talon users will immediately notice is the transition to Material Design guidelines.

Talon users will see a new user layout, transition animations from the timeline to tweet viewer, the login/setup screen has been changed to Material Design, and now users can select the font type from the UI settings.

Some other added bonuses include the ability to swipe horizontally to close tweet and profile viewers, notifications for quoted tweets when using Talon Pull, and the ability to disable Talon Pull notifications. However, the developer suggests reading the disclaimer and to “use extreme caution” when disabling it.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Finally, there’s been a variety of bug fixes, improvements to features, and overall performance enhancements promoting the stability of Talon for Twitter.

Google Store Back to School promotion begins, save up to $30 on a new Chromebook

acer_chromebook_13_clam_position_2_TA

Google is getting a head start for the new upcoming school year by launching its back to school promotion on many products in the Google Store. However, it seems like the only new sales we’re seeing are on select Acer Chromebooks.

Chromebooks are phenomenal options for schooling, but unfortunately, the discounts aren’t something to write home about. For instance, the Acer Chromebook 15 now costs $319.99, $30 off the original price tag, the Acer Chromebook 13 costs $229.99, $20 off the original price tag, and so on.

Disappointingly, many of the sales on the Google Store are price cuts we’ve already seen in the past. Many of these supposed price cuts are also available from other retailers like Amazon on a regular basis.

Either way, there’s nothing wrong with saving money, and if you can’t find any of Acer’s Chromebooks on sale somewhere else, you can save yourself some money through the Google Store from now until likely just before school begins. Hopefully we’ll see some better deals and price cuts as time goes on, but it certainly isn’t likely.

On another note, if you’re looking for something a bit heftier, Woot.com almost always has some great sales running on desktops and laptops of all kinds.

Google improves accuracy of Google Voice and Project Fi voicemail transcriptions by 49%

Google_logo_474844

Google today took to its official blog to announce that Google Voice voicemails are now 49 percent less confusing, thanks to user-submitted feedback. Google Voice is notorious for creating terrible transcriptions from voicemails, but things might just be getting better.

Here’s how Google was able to do it:

…We asked users if they would kindly share some of their voicemails for research and system improvements. Thanks to those who participated, we are happy to announce an improved voicemail system in Google Voice and Project Fi that delivers more accurate transcriptions. Using a (deep breath) long short-term memory deep recurrent neural network (whew!), we cut our transcription errors by 49%.

If you’re a Google Voice or a Project Fi user, you should now begin to see better transcriptions. Keep in mind that it’s not going to be entirely fixed, but cutting errors by 49% is actually quite a leap. Users will no doubt see it improve even more over time as Google continues to expand its neural network responsible for these fixes.

Every single possible Moto G (2015) color option based on recent leaks

Sorry for the all of the Moto G news, but Reddit user ‘veryfloppydisk’ took it upon himself to create an image containing all of the color combinations possible using recent Moto G (3rd Gen) leaks and the Moto Maker leak we previously reported on.

MotoGOptions

The image was created in Paint.NET according to veryfloppydisk, who apologizes for color bleed. However, we only have praise and thanks for the time that he took to create this image.

Here is a quick recap on specs in case you have forgotten:

  • Full HD 5″ screen
  • Snapdragon 410 SoC
  • Quad Core 1.4GHz
  • 8GB internal memory (16GB model availible)
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 5MP front camera

Rumor has it that the 16GB model will have 2GB of RAM while the 8GB model will ship with 1GB of RAM.

We also know/believe that the Moto G will come with a microSD slot for expandable storage and an IPx7 water resistance rating.

In his Reddit post, veryfloppydisk states that this might “save you a few precious minutes during the checkout process if you’re thinking about ordering on launch day”.

Well, what do you have to say? I will definitely be ordering one on launch day if the price is right.

My favorite match-up is the ‘Metallic Dark Chrome’ on ‘Cabernet’. I would probably get that with a black front housing and 16GB of internal memory for that 2GB of RAM upgrade.

What is your favorite look for the suspected Moto G (3rd Gen)? Will you be buying one on launch day?

Google’s immersive storytelling app launches on iOS

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Google is getting serious about 360-degree video content. And it’s not only about supporting it through YouTube or, by extension, Cardboard. The search giant’s also behind an app called Spotlight Stories, which it created with Motorola in 2013 and has been on Android since. As of today, that application is also available for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad — as long as those devices are running a version of iOS 8. Google describes Spotlight Stories as a “mobile movie theater” that combines 3D and 2D animation with 360-degree spherical video, sphere audio and sensor-triggered interactions to create an immersive experience. Right now there are four stories you can watch: Buggy Night, Help, Duet and Windy Day, all of which are original and were created exclusively for Spotlight Stories.

YouTube has a new mobile app now, real 3D VR video coming soon

During a keynote speech tonight at the 6th annual Vidcon event, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced a new version of its mobile app. Available on Android and mobile web browsers now (iOS coming soon), it makes it easier for creators to publish and edit directly in the app, and easier for viewers to subscribe to a channel with just one button touch (and with ten million of those touches, channel owners can earn the new Diamond play button reward). The redesign even puts your subscriptions and profile right at the top for easy access. This is also the version that adds the ability to watch those vertical videos in full screen, so expect that to come your way soon if you don’t have it already. One thing that’s not there yet? Support for real 3D virtual reality video, like the kind we’ve seen from NextVR. That’s coming soon, to take things a step further than the current 360-degree support (with 360-degree ads). According to Wojcicki, watch time is up 60 percent across devices, and 100 percent on mobile from last year, so we’d expect there’s a lot more planned to keep that growth going.

2016 Honda Accord getting Android Auto

android auto

Honda will be adding a connected car platform to their 2016 Accord in the form of Android Auto. Honda unveiled the new Accord during the opening of its expanded Silicon Valley Lab.

The cars will also come equipped with Honda Sensing. This is Honda’s new safety and driver-assisting technology. It will give cars semi-autonomous capabilities, such as lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control which can adjust to the speed of the traffic around you.

John Mendel, Honda’s top sales executive in the U.S., said in a statement:

“Where else to introduce the most technologically advanced midsize sedan, the 2016 Accord, than in Silicon Valley?”

Adding these new technologies is just the start to help drivers stay safe on the road. Honda hopes to cut the collision and fatalities rate in half by 2030 and to entirely eliminate collisions by 2050.
