Packaging for the Huawei Watch is anything but cheap

huawei_watch_packaging_hd_blog_072215_1

The Huawei Watch remains one of the most talked about Android Wear devices because it has yet to be released after debuting at MWC 2015 in March. Huawei has yet to provide a firm release date or price, but consumers are eagerly awaiting an arrival that should come this fall. Why are people so eager? The Huawei Watch features a premium design unrivaled (so far) by any other Android Wear device. With that premium device, will likely come a high price tag. So Huawei should really be all-in to make it a splashy product.

Going along with the Huawei Watch’s premium design will be packaging of the same caliber. The box’s black exterior is textured, in addition to the embossed company logo, with a gold trim where the top and bottom pieces meet. Upon opening the box, you will see the Huawei Watch elevated above the white interior. There are gold pegs on the left and right sides of the watch. And the interior of the top piece reads “Huawei design. Smart within.”

This very well could be the packaging not meant for the base model that will cost less than $1,000.

Qualcomm cutting 15% of its workforce in effort to save $1.4 billion

Qualcomm_Logo_01_TA_CES_2014

Qualcomm announced today plans to slash its workforce by 15%, aiming to save around $1.4 billion. The layoffs will be joined by a reduction in annual share compensation. The new strategic realignment or re-sizing plan comes in the wake of the company’s announcement of its third quarter earnings, which dropped nearly 50%.

Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf commented on the changes coming to the company:

“We are making fundamental changes to position Qualcomm for improved execution, financial and operating performance. We are right-sizing our cost structure and focusing our investments around the highest return opportunities while reaffirming our intent to return significant capital to stockholders and refreshing our Board of Directors. Importantly, our Strategic Realignment Plan is designed to drive meaningful change in the near term — without jeopardizing our ability to  retain and build upon our technology and leadership position to create long-term value for our stockholders.”

Under pressure from JANA Partners, which purchased a $2 billion stake in Qualcomm last year, the company announced that structural changes are on the way. Mark McLaughlin of Palo Alto Networks and Tony Vinciquerra of TPG have been added to the Board of Directors. A third person, who must be approved by JANA Partners, will be added in the near future. JANA Partners is continuing to hint that splitting Qualcomm’s units, specifically design and patent-licensing, may be the next step to prevent further loss.

There are more than 31,000 employees, both permanent and temporary, working for Qualcomm; therefore, between 4,500 and 5,000 people are expected to be let go.

‘Hearthstone’ expansion is a Grand Tournament with new cards

That’s 132 new cards, to be exact. The Grand Tournament is Hearthstone‘s latest expansion, due to hit in August with 132 new cards, plus fresh spells and weapons. It also introduces a new keyword — a special attribute attached to certain cards — called Inspire, which adds attack and spell boosts to some plays. Plus, the game board gets a revamp with tournament tents and competition grounds. The Grand Tournament comes at a price, of course: These card packs will be available for in-game gold or real money at the same price as standard packs, ranging from 100 gold for one pack and $3 for two packs, all the way to $50 for 40 packs. There’s a pre-purchase price of $50 for 50 Grand Tournament card packs to be unsealed on launch day. The expansion launches sometime in August across iOS, Android, PC and Mac. Ready your decks, champions.

Lawsuit claims Sling tricked viewers by introducing ads

Slingbox M2

Don’t like that your Slingbox setup is dishing out ads when it wasn’t before? You’re not alone. Two viewers have sued Sling Media for allegedly pulling a “bait and switch” on existing customers, serving them ads that they hadn’t actually agreed to see. It’s tantamount to fraud, according to the lawsuit, and it’s particularly egregious when many viewers paid $300 or more for their set-top boxes.

If successful, the lawsuit (which could become a class action) would ask for both damages and a ban on Sling serving ads to anyone who hasn’t explicitly allowed them… which, at the moment, is most Slingbox users. The company isn’t commenting on the suit, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s willing to go to trial rather than settle out of court. After all, it’s counting on that ad revenue to replace the money that Slingbox M2 buyers would otherwise pay for the SlingPlayer app — at $15 or more per app, that’s not exactly chump change.

Next-gen Moto X leaks hint at a big screen and a front flash

Moto X 205 in Peruvian leaks

Motorola just can’t keep its next-generation smartphones under wraps, apparently. Both Peru Android and Google+ user Paul Faz have posted photos that reportedly show the third-generation Moto X in considerably greater detail than earlier leaks. For a start, this is a beast of a device — while it’s unclear just how big that display is, Faz pegs it at 5.5 inches. In other words, Motorola might be headed into LG G4 territory with a big screen in a relatively compact body. Also, the shots support rumors that Motorola would join the likes of HTC by including a front camera flash for those nighttime selfies. It’s not totally certain that you’ll see this device at Motorola’s July 28th event, but it’s at least plausible.

AT&T raising its activation fees to $45, off-contract customers slammed with $15 charge

AT&TLogoPrice

Those planning to sign up for AT&T wireless services will come across a very unpleasant surprise. The carrier will raise its activation fees starting August 1st. What’s even more frustrating is that not even off-contract users will be safe from AT&T’s new charges.

Higher activation fees for customers on contract

It seems all the money AT&T will get from you in 1-2 years is simply not enough. Not only is the current $40 activation fee among the highest in the industry, but the wireless service provider is showing its greedy business-oriented side by raising fees to $45. With this move, AT&T officially places itself at the top of the list of carriers with the most expensive activation fees, beating all major competitors; yes, even Verizon!

This new $45 charge will be applied to any new customer signing up for a 1-year or 2-year contract. The same should apply for those hoping to upgrade to a new device.

  • Verizon activation fee: $40
  • Sprint activation fee: $36
  • T-Mobile activation fee: N/A

A new fee for off-contract users

Now, this is the part that will surely have your blood boiling… or at least a bit warmer. AT&T pretty much just created a new fee out of the blue. While it was possible for customers to avoid extra costs by opting for Next, AT&T’s installment payment plan, this will no longer be the case. A $15 fee will be applied to anyone signing up for this service. Furthermore, AT&T decided to go all in and also start charging $15 to those who bring their own device and get it activated on their network.

Wrapping up

If you are going to join AT&T or upgrade your device, we advice that you do it now. These changes come into effect starting August 1st, so you have a bit over a week to get everything set up.

I personally believe these changes are unreasonable, especially for those signing contracts. AT&T is binding you to spend money on them for an extended period of time, then they go on and charge you higher activation fees?

The good news is things are about to get a bit entertaining, at least for a while. Knowing T-Mobile CEO John Legere, we are sure he won’t be staying quiet. Let’s keep it tuned to his Twitter account! Meanwhile, hit the comments and let us know if you are as upset about this as I am.

Leaked Moto X (2015) images suggest front-facing flash and fingerprint in speaker

motorola-logo-mwc-2015-1

The Moto X (2015) should be right around the corner, as Motorola has been making it a habit to release its flagship phones sometime between August and September. As you can expect, the rumor mill is going full speed and is not stopping anytime soon. More images and details have emerged today, coming from Peruvian Facebook page ‘Perú Android’.

The Facebook page is very active and claims to have gotten these images and details from an anonymous source. Perú Android is clear to say they can’t really confirm the information’s validity 100%, but the evidence does look enticing. For starters, the leak tells us the phone should come with a 2K display and a 21 MP rear-facing camera.

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

This is not necessarily huge news, but it’s what the images showcase that has us scratching our heads. These photos suggest the phone will come with an integrated front-facing flash, solving your low-light selfie woes (which we touched on just yesterday). In addition, the rumored fingerprint reader may have a rather unique placement. Instead of putting it in the back, this source claims Motorola opted to build the fingerprint sensor right into the lower front speaker.

If this is the case, the new Moto X would be the first device in which any major manufacturer manages to seamlessly integrate a fingerprint sensor without wasting too much space. Others have a dedicated spot for the reader, or opt to integrate it into the home button. By implementing this new technique, Motorola would effectively be able to keep a low bezel-to-screen ratio and still add biometric functionality.

As with any rumor, you should take this with a healthy dose of salt. Not even Perú Android is completely sure about this information, so you shouldn’t hold your breath on it, either. As for additional specs, other rumors say the Moto X (2015) should feature a Snapdragon 808 processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 5.2-inch QHD screen and a 3280 mAh battery.

We should be able to confirm all official details in some days, once Motorola takes the stage this July 28th. Alleged Motorola Moto X (2015) images show front-facing camera with flash

motorola_logo_2015_lenovo_company

The quality of front-facing cameras has improved dramatically over the last twenty-four months. Taking a picture with a front-facing camera, or a ‘selfie’ for that matter, now produces results that are worth sharing. Companies like HTC and Sony have even released devices with flash on the front to really maximize performance. Flagships, though, have yet to start including front-facing flash. This summer, that could change with the introduction of the Moto X (2015). Images shared online today show what is allegedly Motorola’s next flagship and a front-facing camera paired with flash is present.

Hit the break to see the image.

motorola_moto_x_2015_paul_faz_072215

As with all Motorola devices, this one seems to have an entertaining boot animation.

motorola_moto_x_2015_peru_android_072215

Nothing out of the ordinary here. If anything, the display seems taller than its predecessor; however, that could be due to the angling of the photograph.

The new versions of Motorola’s Moto X and Moto G are expected to be unveiled at a company event held on July 28.

Photos of the Motorola Moto X 3rd gen get leaked out

We’ve heard lots about the Moto G that Motorola intends to release this year, however we haven’t heard as much about the Motorola Moto X 3rd gen. Today, we get one of our best looks at the device thanks to some leaked photos, and unsurprisingly, it shares the same design language as the leaked photos of the Moto G that we have seen – overall, the shape of the device is the same, however the back of the device has changed to join the rear camera to the little dimple with the Motorola logo in it with a plastic strip. Check out the photos below:

Motorola Moto X 3rd gen
Motorola Moto X 3rd gen

There isn’t a huge amount that we can glean from these photos – it’s alleged the Moto X will have a 5.2-inch display, and we see that the dual front speakers return again. The source of the leak claims that there is also a fingerprint sensor embedded in the bottom speaker grille, though we’re pretty sceptical about this. And it’s rumoured that the Moto G will have IPX7 water resistance, so we hope the Moto X gets the same treatment. Motorola is due to have an event held on July 28th so we’re quietly hopeful that Motorola announces all its new devices at this event including the Moto X, Moto G, Moto E and new Moto 360 – here’s to hoping.

What do you think about the Motorola Moto X 3rd gen? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Netflix’s TV apps get their first major update since 2013

While Netflix has focused on rolling out more original content to more countries over the last couple of years, we haven’t seen as many updates to its software as we used to. Last week the streaming video service said it would start optimizing its mobile apps, but first up is a tweak for the TV apps you probably use more often. Netflix says this is the first major change its TV apps have had since the new look rolled out in late 2013, and it will start or resume video as soon as you select a title, while keeping the info on the screen (check after the break for a GIF showing how it works). An earnings report earlier this year mentioned bringing video “forward” in the TV experience, and this seems to be a part of that plan, delivering what Netflix says is a more cinematic experience.

Cinematic or not, when I’ve fallen asleep mid-OITNB binge, a visual hint would make it easier to remember which episode I was on so this should help. When we spoke to Netflix’s Cliff Edwards in January we heard about plans to put its app on the same footing as cable, and creating a way for viewers to passively slip into watching makes that possible. Once you turn on cable TV the video is usually just there, while with streaming you’ve always had to pick something first — this new feature combined with faster loading apps and video makes your Netflix & chill moment more casual . If you’re using an older TV or device you may not see the feature, but it’s rolling out to “eligible devices” (Netflix Recommended TVs are a good bet) globally over the next few days.
