LG Display announced today that it will invest KRW 1.05 trillion ($908m) into a 6th generation flexible OLED production line to produce OLED displays more efficiently. The plan is expected to start sometimes in the third quarter of 2015 and will be completed by the second quarter of 2017.

The new production technology that will be used in the new plan will allow LG to manufacture more than 200 5.5-inch panel cuts from a single substrate (four times the amount of its current technology). The demand for OLED displays has been drastically increasing especially in 2015 thanks to smartphones such as LG G4, G Flex 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that all sport the technology. According to analysts, by increasing its production capacity, LG will be able to keep competitive prices to rival against Chinese competitors. In addition, LG is planning on using the plant to produce future flexible screens for smartphones, TVs and automotive displays.

OLED technology has allowed LG to innovate and create products that set the company aside from the competition, such as making the world’s first 1.3-inch circular flexible OLED display for smartwatches in September 2014 with the LG Watch Urbane.
