Maps version 9.2 adds a timeline for your location history [APK Download]
Ever wanted to know where you’ve been but can’t remember? Google knows! Not only does Google track your location at any point in time, but a new timeline feature in version 9.2 of the Maps app allows a user to browse exactly where they’ve been over a period of time.
There’s a new section in Maps called “Your Timeline” that will provide a detailed history of where you’ve been. It’s pretty much the same thing as Google’s Location history page but provides a vast amount more data and context to show your location history. You’ll be able to see the places you’ve been, the times you’ve been there, and even how you travelled between points. What’s pretty cool is that any photos taken at that location will also appear there, assuming you’re using Google Photos.
If you notice any mistakes or inaccuracies in the data it has collected, since Google sometimes estimates this location data, then you are able to edit certain points to amend that.
Under another section “Your Places” they’ll be a list of “Places You’ve Been” that will list exactly that; you can even edit the names of these places to something better known to you, like Home perhaps or even a local childhood park you had a nickname for.

Xiaomi could announce the Mi Band 1S on July 22
Xiaomi may have just unveiled the 32GB variant of its Mi4i in India, but that doesn’t appear to be the only new device up its sleeve. The Chinese company has been teasing images (below) about the existence of the Mi Band 1S via social media, and the likelihood of it being announced tomorrow, July 22nd.
A July 22nd announcement would mark the anniversary that the original Mi Band was released last year. All we know for sure is that the above image says “Good Things Happen Tomorrow“, which is, you guessed it, July 22nd. This second-generation wearable is believed to include a heart-rate monitor among other improvements. As teasers go, it certainly isn’t the worst we’ve seen, especially since we only have a day or so to wait until all is revealed.

Sky app to offer Premier League highlights from 2016-17 season
Although Sky spent a record £4.2 billion for Premier League TV rights for three seasons from 2016, the company wasn’t able to secure access to online and app highlights at the same time. For over half a decade, those rights have been owned by ESPN and News International (now News UK). However, that will all change from the 2016-17 season, when Sky finally gets its hands on near real-time video clips for all Premier League matches and adds to the 126 live games it already has plans to broadcast.
Interestingly, the company confirmed it has teamed up with News UK to show the clips, allowing Sun, Times and Sunday Times subscribers to access highlights online and via their apps for another three seasons. Over the past year, the Premier League has tried to crack down on the number of clips shared on social networks like Vine. Both The Sun and The Times ask customers to pay a subscription for in-app highlights, but Vine users can record footage of their TV screens and share them to Facebook and Twitter for free. The League developed GIF crawlers, Vine crawlers and worked with Twitter directly to protect rights holders, but footage remains widely available.
Sky hasn’t yet confirmed how customers will access its Premier League highlights, but does note that it aims to deliver “the best coverage across TV, mobile, online and social media.” That suggests the company will take a multi-platform approach with its clips, but we’ll find out exactly what it has planned nearer the start of the 2016 season.

Latest Pluto image shows a second, shorter icy mountain range
We’re getting to know Pluto a lot better, thanks to the images released by the New Horizons mission. Take for example, this one captured during the probe’s historic flyby on July 14th, which shows a second mountain range that’s less lofty but just as icy as the first one we saw. It’s located somewhere along the southwestern part of the dwarf planet’s popular heart-shaped feature now known as the Tombaugh Regio and is estimated to be around as tall as the Appalachian Mountains at half a mile to a mile in height. That’s approximately 2,640 to 5,280 feet, a lot shorter than the first range’s estimated height of 11,000 feet.
The scientists believe this mountain range is a lot older than the first, due to its heavily cratered appearance and the clear presence of dark materials. While they aren’t 100 percent sure yet, they think the darker parts of Pluto could be ancient — around a billion years old! The photo above taken by the probe’s Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) has captured features as small as one kilometer, so you’re getting a very close view of what was one was the ninth planet.

Head of Google Photos Anil Sabharwal clarifies the changes coming with Google Photos

A few days ago it was announced that the Photos portion of Google+ was going to be shut down on August 1st in favour of its spin-off app, Google Photos. Apparently there has been a bit of backlash to the announcement with people apparently concerned about losing Photos functionality in Google+, enough that head of Google Photos Anil Sabharwal has needed to come out and clarify some changes coming with Google Photos. In a statement made on his Google+ page, Sabharwal says:
“1. The great photo and video sharing service that’s part of Google+ is unaffected. You can continue to post photos and videos, and your followers will be able to comment and +1 as before. No change.
2. All of the photos, videos, and albums you have already shared on Google+, including their posts, comments, and +1s are also unaffected. An easy way to find these is to visit the Photos tab of your Profile page.
3. The private photo management component of Google+, which includes backup, editing, creations, private album management (album management for shared content is still available on Google+), and sharing to other apps, is being replaced by Google Photos.
I sincerely appreciate for many of you #3 is still a hard pill to swallow. And I promise we don’t take decisions like this one lightly. The reality is that maintaining both Google+ Photos (the private photo management component of Google+) and Google Photos poses several challenges. Most notably, it is confusing to users why we have two offerings that virtually do the same thing, and it means our team needs to divide its focus rather than working on building a single, great user experience. “

Galaxy Note 5 launch reportedly set for August 13

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus smartphones have leaked a lot over the past few weeks but unlike most smartphone launches, the rumours don’t seem to conflict too much. One thing that has been accepted as almost-fact is that the Samsung will defer away from its usual IFA release schedule to launch its new handsets early and get a jump on Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6 refresh.

We’ve previously heard that the Galaxy Note 5 could make its launch on August 12th with a release a few days later on August 21 and a new report from the Korean media has seemingly confirmed this, although suggests that the launch will take place on August 13 in New York City. The reason for the change? According to BusinessKorea,
It is believed that Samsung tries to not only check Apple, which threatens its number one position in global smartphone market share, but also capture consumers before the release of the iPhone 6S in Sept.
The report goes on to also confirm that the Galaxy Note 5 will be joined by the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus at the event, with Samsung eager to release both to the market before Apple has even announced its new devices. Both smartphones will bear resemblance both the Galaxy Note 4 (in size) and Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge (in design and specs) as Samsung aims to deliver an unique big-screen smartphone experience.

Based on previous leaks, it’s suggested that the Galaxy Note 5 will have a 5.7 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display and will be powered by an Exynos 7422 processor with 4GB RAM, 32/64/128GB storage and a 16MP rear camera with OIS. The Note 5 will also gain a redesigned S-Pen stylus that will more closely resemble an actual pen and this will be one of the biggest differences between the Note 5 and the S6 Edge Plus as the latter won’t come with the S-Pen.

Instead of making this year’s large curved screen phablet a successor to the Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung have modelled the handset after the Galaxy S6 Edge. As such, the curved phablet will have a dual curved display and very similar specs to the Note 5 save for a slightly inferior Exynos 7420 processor and 3GB RAM (instead of 4GB).
Both smartphones look set to launch in just a few short weeks in New York and Samsung will likely have a few more surprises in store for us (as the company always does). Its first round screen smartwatch – the Samsung Gear A – is expected to be one of the products announced alongside the two handsets and is likely to run on the company’s Tizen platform, including an all-new UI designed for round devices.

32GB Xiaomi Mi4i to go on sale in India on July 28th

Xiaomi launched its Mi 4i specifically designed for the Indian market earlier in the year and many were anticipating that the company would launch a model with more than 16GB storage. A page on the Xiaomi website now shows that the company is planning to launch a 32GB Mi 4i, with a slightly larger price tag of Rs 14,999 ($235).
The rest of the Mi 4i’s hardware remains unchanged from the prior launch. The handset features a mid-range Snapdraon 615 SoC, 5-inch FullHD display, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera and a 3,120mAh battery. There’s also dual SIM support, LTE and Android 5.0 on board.

The original 16GB Mi 4i launched with a price tag of Rs 12,999 ($205), so there is only a minor price difference for customers who need a little bit of extra space.
Xiaomi is planning to hold a sale for the 32GB model at 9am on July 28th. Eager customers can already pre-register for the sale over on the Mi website. It looks like the smartphone won’t be sold through e-commerce retails like Amazon and FlipKart this time, at least not yet, perhaps due to a limited quantity of stock. An open sale could appear at some point in the future.
The 32GB Xiaomi Mi 4i will be exclusively available in the Dark Grey colour option.
Starbucks joins forces with The New York Times to bring selected content to your phone
It isn’t all that long ago that Starbucks announced its partnership with Spotify, allowing baristas to influence the music playing in-store. Today, we have news that Starbucks will join forces with The New York Times to bring selected news and content to Starbuck’s official app from 2016.
A total of 15 news articles covering social, business and political issues will be delivered directly to the Starbucks mobile app. Purchasing digital and print subscriptions will earn customers Gold Stars, which can then be exchanged for free food and drink by the 10 million My Starbucks Rewards loyalty members. Google clarifies the fate of Google+ Photos after announcing its shutdown
Google had announced earlier this week that it will be shutting down Google+ Photos as a way to “ensure everyone has the best photos experience”. After facing backlash from Google+ users, head of Google Photos Anil Sabharwal posted a statement on Google+ to clarify a couple points regarding the announcement.
Google is indeed shutting down the service gradually, however certain aspects of it will still remain. Users will still be able to share, comment and +1 photos and videos as they always have. Their photos will also still be accessible via the Photos tab of the Google+ profile page. The biggest change is found in the private photo management component of Google+, which includes backup, editing, creations, private album management and sharing to other apps. This service will now be handled by Google Photos.
Nail Sabharwal also gave a side note to further explain the decision Google has taken;

Xiaomi takes the wraps off a 32GB variant of the Mi 4i
As predicted, Xiaomi has today unveiled the 32GB variant of its flagship smartphone, the Mi 4i, in India. The handset will be available in a dark grey colorway and carry a reasonable price tag of INR 14,999 ($235).
The 32GB model isn’t set to face a standard release like its 16GB counterpart, though. Instead, it will be obtainable via flash sales, the first of which is scheduled to take place at PM local time on Tuesday, July 28.
As for the specifications, the Mi 4i features a 5-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 615 System-on-Chip (SoC) with an octa-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, an Adreno 405 GPU and a 3,120mAh non-removable battery.
