Apple hires Chrysler’s quality lead to help make its electric car
Apple isn’t done hiring top talent for its electric car project — in fact, it just scored one of its biggest hires. The Wall Street Journal understands that 1 Infinite Loop recently recruited Doug Betts, the manager for Fiat Chrysler’s global quality efforts from 2007 to 2014. It’s not clear what role he’ll take, but his former position suggests that he’ll help Apple put everything together in a solid piece of machinery. Let’s just hope that the result is more reliable than Chrysler and Fiat cars — neither brand has performed well in recent dependability rankings.
Not that Betts is the only one to come aboard as of late. Apple has also picked up Paul Furgale, the deputy director of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology’s Autonomous Systems Lab. Given that he’s also hiring other computer vision and robotics gurus, it doesn’t take much to see that he’s working on self-driving tech for Cupertino’s EV. The car isn’t even expected to show up until 2020, assuming it pans out, but it’s evident that many of the necessary puzzle pieces are coming into place.

Twitter removes background wallpaper from user homepages
If you logged into your Twitter account on the web today, you might have noticed something new. If you had previously uploaded a custom wallpaper image or just used one of Twitter’s available designs, you’ll notice it no longer appears as the background of your Twitter homepage. A Twitter spokesperson told Engadget, “we’re removing background images from the home and notifications timelines on web for all users. Now, background images are only available where logged-in users will see them publicly (Tweet pages, list pages and collections pages).” The images have been replaced with a blank background with a very slight hint of blue. By removing the background images on homepages and feeds, Twitter is able present a cleaner more unified look to new users. It also means that there’s the chance that in the future, background wallpapers might disappear all together. So you might want to get used to the bland blueish-white background.

Instagram Brings Search to the Web for the First Time
Instagram has offered access to images uploaded to the Instagram iOS app on the web for several years now, and as of today, the site’s gained a new highly desired feature – search. Prior to today, Instagram users could not search for content on the Instagram website, with search being limited to the company’s apps.
With the new website search feature that’s rolling out today, it’s possible to search for hashtags, locations, and user accounts directly from a web browser. The new capabilities are designed to make the web experience better complement the mobile browsing experience.
Searching for a location will bring up images from that location alongside a map, while searching for a username will bring up individual accounts and searching for a hashtag will bring up a landing page that shows all images tagged with that label. Search pages display both top posts that have received the most likes and most recent posts.
Today’s new web search feature follows a major June iOS update that made it easier to discover content within the Instagram app. That update expanded the “Explore” tab with curated collections of images and enabled the ability to search by location for the first time.
Instagram for iOS can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]
Deal: KMASHI 10,000 mAh battery pack only $13.99 (72% discount)

We figure it will be a while before the industry fixes all our battery woes, so you best prepare yourself with a handy portable battery pack for now. These nifty accessories can charge your devices on-the-go, effectively elongating your battery life by substantial proportions. Today’s deal highly discounts a 10,000 mAh battery from KMASHI, taking its price down to a mere $13.99.
Let’s put this into perspective: a Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with a 2550 mAh battery, while an LG G4 packs a 3000 mAh one. This means you should be able to get over three times the capacity from this external battery, when compared to your average mobile device’s juice.

And the discount is nothing to scoff at, either. This portable battery pack’s original price is $49.99, meaning those who take advantage of this deal are getting a 72% discount. Not to mention, it’s hard for battery packs of this size to come by at such low prices, regardless of the MSRP. Add in the fact that you get free Amazon Prime shipping, or free standard shipping in orders above $35, and we have a winner.
The KMASHI 10,000 mAh battery pack can charge two devices at once, through a couple USB ports. One of these can output at 5V/2.1A. The second one is a bit slower at 5V/1A, but it will still do. These slower ports are usually best for smaller devices or wearables.
You can always refer back to our post on the best portable battery packs if you are looking for something with a stronger punch. The KMASHI battery pack didn’t make it to our list, but it is a great deal for the price. Go get it!
We can all say our Goodbyes to Google+ Photos soon
Goodbye Google+ Photos. Back in May, at Google I/O 2015, Google introduced Google Photos. A cross-platform photo back-up service that not only works with Android, but also has iOS and web compatibility. When Google Photos was announced, it was expected that Google+ Photos would be leaving, but there was no mention of when.
It turns out that August 1st will be that day. Today, via Google+ (coincidentally enough), the Google+, Google+ page, announced when photo backup would be shut down. The service will be shut down for Android first, then the web and iOS later on.
If you’re still using Google+ Photos, now is a great time to make the switch. You may have seen a prompt in Google+ Photos on Android with a link to download the new Google Photos. Don’t worry, all your photos and videos will still be saved and available after you switch to the new, stand-alone Google Photos app. With the new app you’ll still be able to backup, edit, and share your photos and videos, with unlimited storage, automatic organization, and more.
If you’re worried about all your images that have already been backed up via Google+ Photos, don’t be. You will still be able to view all of your previously backed up photos via the new Google Photos app. Some of us have already started to see prompts from the old app, encouraging us to download the new Google Photos app.
We have previously covered everything Google Photos has to offer to everyone, and is really a great option, regardless of the platform, to backup everything up. Especially with the unlimited storage that is offered.

So, for that very flexible price range you get Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Blazing Star, The King of Fighters ’97, Metal Slug 2 (pictured above) and Metal Slug X on Android. Android Central notes that if you grabbed ’em all separately it’d run you $23, so if you feel like throwing more money Humble’s way you can snag a Metal Slug t-shirt celebrating NeoGeo’s 25th anniversary. That isn’t expected to ship until October, but you could always use the next few months to brush up on your shooting skills and wear it with pride, right?

In case you need a refresher, the HTC-made Nexus 9 comes with an 8.9-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1536 x 2048, a NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor clocked at 2.3GHz and backed by 2GB of RAM. It also has a big 6700mAh battery, runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop at the moment, and will be among the first devices to receive the Android M update once Google releases it to the masses.
Expansys doesn’t mention if this is a promotion or if this is the new price for the tablet, so we’re not sure how long it will last. If you’re interested, head to the link below to pick one up for yourself.
Apple Continues Hiring Automotive Experts, Possibly for Rumored ‘Titan’ Car Project
Apple recently made a major automotive hire that hints at the company’s continued work on an electric car, reports The Wall Street Journal. The company hired Doug Betts, who previously served as the Senior Vice President of the Chrysler Group, where he was the global head of operations leading product service and quality.
According to Betts’ LinkedIn page, he began working at Apple in July. Aside from a role in “Operations,” in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are no details on what he is doing at the company.
Betts’ LinkedIn profile suggests he made major customer satisfaction improvements and warranty cost reductions during his tenure at Chrysler, with job duties that included quality engineering, field issue problem solving, manufacturing operations, and supplier quality, among other tasks. Prior to working at Chrysler, Betts worked at Nissan, Toyota, and Michelin.

Along with Betts, The Wall Street Journal suggests Apple also recently recruited a researcher, Paul Furgale, with a specialization in autonomous vehicles to join its team of employees working on its car project. The company is said to be seeking out other experts with robotics and machine experience, with Furgale recruiting both students and researchers.
Earlier this year, Apple hired Paul Furgale a well-regarded autonomous vehicle researcher in Switzerland, and has begun recruiting other robotics and machine vision experts to work on a confidential project.
Mr. Furgale had been deputy director of the Autonomous Systems Lab at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, or ETH. Mr. Furgale previously had led a European Commission project called V-Charge that sought to develop self-parking vehicle technology.
News of Apple’s car project, code-named “Project Titan,” leaked in February, but details on the top secret effort remain scarce. Apple reportedly has hundreds of employees working on developing an electric vehicle and has been recruiting talent from the automotive industry and other car-related fields, poaching employees from companies like Tesla, Ford, and GM. Rumors have thus far disagreed on whether Apple is focusing on self-driving capabilities for the vehicle.
Rumors have suggested Apple is aiming to produce a car by 2020, but because Apple often works on projects that never make it to fruition, it’s possible that its car plans could be shelved or delayed in the future if the company is unhappy with its progress.
‘The Last of Us’ soundtrack is getting a gorgeous vinyl release

Somehow The Last of Us didn’t make it onto our list of favorite video game soundtracks, but fret not because it is getting an extremely pretty vinyl release. This Wednesday, Mondo will drop the four 180-gram LP boxed set featuring art by Jay Shaw and the inimitable Olly Moss at a random time. Modern Vinyl says that it’ll contain not only Gustavo Santaolalla’s score, but also ambient cues from the game in addition to music from the Ellie-focused Left Behind expansion episode. The pricing will likely make thrift-minded folks choke a bit — $75, all said — but given the quality of Mondo’s work in general, this is probably going to be a really nice release. It’ll almost assuredly sell out incredibly quickly and hit collector’s item status in short order, too. Should you want in, your best bet is to keep an eye on the art-minded reseller’s Twitter feed come hump day.
THE LAST OF US 4XLP with artwork by @ollymoss & @ironjaiden will go on sale this Wednesday! http://t.co/3FfDUbOqYw pic.twitter.com/O0SHzdDT2g
