First up is a 32GB Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (N910) for Verizon for just $399.95. It’s available in both Black and White color options and, like all the other smartphones on this list, comes with a 30-day money back guarantee. The Galaxy Note 4 is the latest phablet to come from Samsung. Although we may be expecting its successor sometime soon, the Note 4 is still one of the better devices on the market. It comes with a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, 3GB of RAM, a microSD card slot for expandable memory and a powerful 16MP rear facing camera.

Next up is the 32GB Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (N900V) for Verizon for just $239.99, which also comes in Black and White color options. Even though this device’s successor has been out for some time, it’s still not a bad phone in the slightest. Featuring a 5.7-inch Full HD display, microSD card expansion and 32GB of storage, the Galaxy Note 3 is a multimedia powerhouse through and through. And for just $240, this isn’t a bad deal in the slightest.

The last two smartphones we’ll showcase here are the Galaxy S5 Active (G870A) and Galaxy S5 (G900A) proper, which are both being sold for just $269.99. They’re both factory GSM unlocked which means neither will work on Verizon or Sprint networks. The Galaxy S5 Active is available in Red, Black and Green color options, while you can pick up the S5 proper in either Black or White. Whether you choose to go with the ruggedized or standard version, we’re sure you’ll be quite content carrying around either of these devices.

Now you can explore Hacking Team’s world of selling spyware

Plenty of ink has already been spilled about the Hacking Team’s spectacular security meltdown, but why should the press have all the fun? WikiLeaks posted a searchable archive of over a million emails from the Italian IT firm last night, which means armchair sleuths can take a peek into the cloak-and-dagger world of selling spyware to governments with just a few clicks. Now obviously not everything contained in this hefty database is damning; lots of it just chronicles the day-to-day operations of a lucrative business. Every once in a while, you’ll find something almost shocking in its mundanity, like this corporate email blast about restaurants in London that wound up in Hacking Team COO Giancarlo Russo’s inbox. Still, there are plenty of juicier tidbits waiting for you if you keep a few keywords in mind.

Searching for hits related to Uzbekistan — a country whose track record for human rights violations has been generously referred to as “atrocious” — turns up a series of conversations between members of Hacking Team and employees of a company called NICE that were keen to keep specific details about its client off the table. We can make some pretty solid guesses about who’d actually stand to benefit from Hacking Team’s remote surveillance tech, though — NICE Systems is a known business partner of Uzbekistan’s National Security Service. Meanwhile, searching for “.gov” brings up (among other things) a thread in which employee of what appears to be Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior really wants to make sure Hacking Team’s system can capture traffic even if the target is using Tor or some similar obfuscating tool. The answer? A resounding yes. There’s plenty of more sifting to do in the coming days and weeks, so why not jump in and see what there is to see?

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides gain a few handy editing features in latest update

Google Sheets

Google has just announced that new updates are rolling out to its Docs, Sheets and Slides apps that will make it a breeze to edit documents of all types on mobile.

The company is making it easier for users to edit document titles from the overflow menu in each app, which will make this process much quicker and convenient. You’ll now also be able to change the layout of a slide to a predefined layout in the Slides app, as well as reply to comments when using Office Compatibility Mode in Docs.

Here’s the full changelog for these three apps, from Google:

  • People can now edit document, spreadsheet, and presentation titles directly from the overflow menu in the top right corner of each app, making renaming files faster and simpler.
  • Within the Slides app, individuals can now change the layout of an existing slide to one of several predefined layouts, allowing them to update presentations on mobile more effectively.
  • People can now reply to comments when working in Office Compatibility Mode in the Docs app. In addition, when in OCM, suggestions and comments now appear in the Comments panel in the order they were made—rather than as all comments first and all suggestions second.

The updates to these three apps are now rolling out in Google Play, so follow the links below to grab the latest versions.

Twitch app for Android gains a convenient pop-out player in most recent update

twitch_logo_purple

Watching other people play video games may not sound too amusing to everyone out there, but the craze has recently picked up steam all throughout the world. If you happen to use popular game streaming service Twitch on your Android device, you’ll be happy to hear that a neat little update is headed your way.

The Twitch team has just announced a new pop-up player feature that will allow you to keep broadcasts streaming, even when you’re outside of the application. To access the new feature simply tap the pop-out icon located on the bottom right corner of the video player, or you can get to it via the Settings cog. When you’re in pop-out mode, you can change the size of the player with your finger. Tapping the pop-in icon on the left of the player should return you to the full app and resume the original broadcast without missing a beat. It should be noted that this new feature only works in landscape mode on smartphones; the feature will work in both landscape and portrait modes if you’re on a tablet.

While I have you here, did you happen to know that Android Authority has a Twitch account? Our very own Joe Hindy has been streaming a ton of games as of late, including popular titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Hitman Sniper, Siegefall, Kingdom Rush: Origins and many, many more. Our broadcasts normally last anywhere around 30-60 minutes at a time, which makes it easy to watch each one in a single sitting.

Be sure to follow Android Authority on Twitch to get a first-hand look at the most recent and popular mobile games on the market. To do so, head to the link below to become a follower. Also, the update to the Twitch mobile app should be live in the Play Store, so be sure to check out that link as well.

Ellen Pao out as Reddit CEO, co-founder Steve Huffman takes over

reddit sticker - 2

After an onslaught of user criticism this week, Ellen Pao has just stepped down as interim CEO of Reddit, with co-founder Steve Huffman taking over. It all started last weekend, when Reddit abruptly dismissed Victoria Taylor, the company’s former director of talent who was also instrumental in making the site’s “AMA” (Ask Me Anything) feature mainstream. Subreddit moderators then took key parts of the site down in protest and users took to the forums to voice their disapproval of Pao. Pao did apologize, but that did little to quash the community’s ire. Still, despite her retiring as CEO, Pao will stay on as advisor.

In a statement posted by Reddit board member Sam Altman, it appears that Pao’s resignation was a mutual agreement between her and the team. Altman also went on to say that the team hopes to do better by the community, with better clarity of content policies and improved communication with the moderators. Additionally, Altman took the opportunity to say that some of the comments about Pao were “sickening,” especially the death threats against her. That said, Pao states that many redditors were very supportive and the large majority did not do those things.

After posting the statement, Altman has also started an AMA for those with more questions. Also, new CEO Steve Huffman has stuck around in that Reddit statement thread to answer questions.

Comment from discussion An old team at reddit.

In her own post on Reddit, Pao gives a heartfelt farewell. She states:

After more than two years at reddit, I have resigned today. My first day was April 1, 2013 (go orangered!), and every day since has been an adventure.

In my eight months as reddit’s CEO, I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly on reddit. The good has been off-the-wall inspiring, and the ugly made me doubt humanity.

I just want to remind everyone that I am just another human; I have a family, and I have feelings. Everyone attacked on reddit is just another person like you and me. When people make something up to attack me or someone else, it spreads, and we eventually will see it. And we will feel bad, not just about what was said. Also because it undercuts the authenticity of reddit and shakes our faith in humanity.

What has far outshone the hate has been the positive on reddit. Thank you, kind strangers, for expressing your support. You gilded me 100 times. (For those of you who apologized for generating a wave of accusations that I gilded myself, please don’t feel bad. You did a good thing.) And thank you for sending cute animal pics and encouraging me to “Stay safe!” when the site overheated with expressions of hate in various forms. There were some days when your PMs inspired me more than you can imagine.

Most touching were the stories from regular users. Some told of people they knew who had committed suicide for being transgender or exposed in revenge porn. Others shared their experiences of being harassed and expressed empathy and gratitude. More recently, several users apologized for trolling me and for not giving me the benefit of the doubt when the troll hivemind moved against me. Initially users said they were afraid to post supportive messages openly; recently they started fighting back against the trolls publicly on reddit with support, corrections and positive messages.

So why am I leaving? Ultimately, the board asked me to demonstrate higher user growth in the next six months than I believe I can deliver while maintaining reddit’s core principles.

You will be in good hands — our strong leadership team will now be led by u/spez, one of reddit’s original co-founders. Like u/kn0thing, he’s lived and breathed reddit since its inception and will work passionately to ensure reddit’s success.

Thank you to all the users who shared your excitement about reddit and what we’ve done and for encouraging everyone to remember the human. And thank you for making my time here at reddit an amazing learning experience.

Barclays Anticipating ‘Imminent’ Support for Apple Pay in United Kingdom

MacRumors has learned that a high-level executive at Barclays, one of the largest banks in the United Kingdom, anticipates “imminent” support of Apple Pay in the country. Apple Pay in the U.K. is expected to go live on Tuesday, although it remains unclear if Barclays will be a first wave launch partner because of its delayed negotiations with Apple about the mobile payments service.

Barclays Apple Pay UK
Apple confirmed at WWDC last month that Apple Pay will be available in the U.K. in July, but stopped short of providing a specific launch date. Recently released employee training documents have suggested the launch could come next week, on July 14, and some Santander customers were able to add their cards to Passbook for use with Apple Pay and make purchases ahead of that date.

Barclays was notably absent from Apple’s list of banks that will support Apple Pay in the U.K. at launch or soon after, which presently includes HSBC, Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, M&S Bank, MBNA, NatWest, Nationwide, Santander, TSB and Ulster Bank. The bank’s subsidiary Barclaycard has offered an Apple Rewards Visa Card for several years.

Barclaycard recently expanded its “bPay” lineup of wearable solutions for contactless payments to include a wristband, key fob and sticker, leading to speculation that Barclays may be electing to use its own mobile payments services as opposed to Apple Pay, similar to how some retailers maintained exclusivity to the CurrentC platform last year. Today’s confirmation, however, indicates otherwise.

Calendar app Sunrise starts integrating with Office 365

Kioloa Bay Sunrise

Now that it owns Sunrise, the sleek and social calendar app, it makes sense for Microsoft to integrate it with its other productivity tools. That’s why Sunrise now plugs directly into Office 365 on iOS, Android and the desktop, giving you access to all of your scheduled events under a single calendar. Microsoft says the added compatibility will help down the road as well, since there’s more flexibility to test features that’ll make Sunrise work better with Office 365 applications. If you use Exchange, however, the Sunrise support is only for iOS and Android at the moment, and there’s no word on whether that’s expected to change anytime soon. Either way, this is great news for those of you who rely on these services.
