Spotify tells iOS users how to avoid iTunes charges and pay less

SWEDEN-MUSIC-COMPANY-SPOTIFY

Spotify isn’t happy that its iOS customers have to pay an additional $3 for a premium subscription if they make the purchase through the App Store. That’s why it’s planning to send them instructions on how to apply for a subscription straight from the company’s website. The Verge got its hands on a copy of the letter, wherein Spotify made clear that “the normal Premium price is only $9.99, but Apple charges 30 percent on all payments made through iTunes.” That ups the total to $12.99, which is only $2 away from Apple Music’s six-person family plan. That email, if you haven’t gotten it yet, contains links that make it easy to cancel Spotify’s auto-renew on iTunes and redirect you to the service’s website. You’ll have to wait until your current month ends before you can subscribe again, but after you do, you won’t have to pay $12.99 again.

As Bloomberg notes, Apple doesn’t allow links within apps that allow people to make purchases from external websites. That’s likely what prompted the streaming service to decide on sending an email blast instead of adding a PSA inside the app. The publication also points out that Apple only adds $$$ on top of goods or services if it doesn’t have a competing product. For instance, you apparently don’t have to pay extra if you buy a plane ticket through United Airlines’ iPhone app. Since Cupertino’s new Music streaming service has a lot of competitors in addition to Spotify, it’s facing antitrust investigations in a couple of states.

It was inevitable that LG was going to announce a mid-range version of its flagship LG G4, and that device has been made official today as the LG G4 Beat. If you can imagine a slightly smaller, slightly less powerful version of the LG G4, and you’ve pretty much got the LG G4 Beat – headlining specs for the device include an octacore Snapdragon 615 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display and a 8MP rear camera that inherits LG’s nifty camera features like Color Spectrum Sensor and Laser Auto Focus.

LG G4 Beat

Of course, the device was never meant to turn too many heads, but it is a decent offering at the mid-range, and it does have the added incentive of sharing the LG G4’s unique looks and design. Unfortunately, LG Beat devices of old have often been just a tad too expensive to truly be competitive with the likes of the Moto G, but we’ll see what the pricing is like when the device is actually available. LG says to expect the LG G4 Beat in Europe and Latin America this month with Canada, India, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and others to join at a later date.

The full list of specifications for the LG G4 Beat are:

  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 615 Processor
  • Display: 5.2-inch Full HD IPS LCD (1920 x 1080, 423ppi)
  • Memory: 8GB eMMC ROM / 1.5GB RAM
  • Camera: Rear 8MP LDAF (13MP in Latin America) / Front 5MP
  • Battery: 2,300mAh (removable)
  • Operating System: Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
  • Size: 142.7 x 72.6 x 9.85mm
  • Weight: 139g
  • Network: 4G LTE / HSPA+ 42.2Mbps (3G)
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n / Bluetooth 4.1 / NFC / A-GPS / Glonass / USB 2.0
  • Colors: Metallic Silver / Ceramic White / Shiny Gold
  • Other: In-Cell Touch / Color Spectrum Sensor / Gesture Interval Shot / Full HD 1080p Video

LG G4 BEAT DELIVERS PREMIUM DESIGN,
SUPERIOR FEATURES IN A MID-TIER PACKAGE

Advanced Display, Advanced Camera and Striking Design Come
Together to Create an Exceptional Phone Without the Exceptional Price

SEOUL, July 9, 2015 ― LG Electronics (LG) officially unveiled its newest variant of its widely praised LG G4 flagship smartphone. The LG G4 Beat1 retains the best features and functions of the LG G4, delivering value without compromising performance or usability. The LG G4 Beat will make its debut this month in key markets in Europe and Latin America, including France, Germany and Brazil before rolling out globally in markets such as Canada, India, Russia, Singapore, South Africa and Turkey, among others.

The LG G4 Beat comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS Display, which is clearer, sharper and more responsive than anything offered by LG before in this category. A powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 615 processor running eight cores at 1.5GHz with integrated 4G LTE delivers an optimal balance of power, performance and battery life.

LG G4 Beat’s camera features are equally as impressive as the hardware. On the back is a 8MP camera 2, supported by LG’s exclusive Color Spectrum Sensor and Laser Auto Focus. Manual Mode, one of the most acclaimed features in the G4, allows full creative control over every detail in each shot. LG also enhanced the 5MP front-facing shooter with Gesture Interval Shot to allow users to take four consecutive selfies with a single hand gesture, increasing the odds of capturing that perfect shot.

“Too often, mid-tier phones sacrifice overall usability in order to include that one killer feature,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our goal with the LG G4 Beat was to create a phone that was not only well- balanced in terms of display, camera, performance and design but delivered terrific value and satisfaction.”

Highlights and Features of the LG G4 Beat are:

  • High Performance Multimedia made possible by a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 615 Processor with Octa-Core performance and speed, which can handle Full HD 1080p playback at 60fps and capture at 30fps.
  • Color Spectrum Sensor to measure the exact RGB and infrared values of ambient light and objects, resulting in colors that are truer to nature.
  • Manual Mode to give users fine control over every detail of a shot, including shutter speed, ISO, exposure and white balance.
  • Gesture Interval Shot improves on the original Gesture Shot by increasing the chance of getting that perfect shot even under challenging conditions.

Prices and details of availability will be announced locally at the time of launch.

Cyanogen growing – hires Qualcomm and Amazon key engineers

cyanogen (2)

Cyanogen’s goal is to “put a bullet through Google’s head” and “take Android away from them”. Can they make it? It seems very unlikely at this point, but one thing is for sure – they continue to race to the top and now they have a couple key industry leaders helping them reach their goals.

The creators of the most popular Android ROM (CyanogenMod) have just hired a couple high-profile engineers from Amazon and Qualcomm. The first is former Amazon engineering leader Stephen Lawler, who will come in as Senior Vice President of Engineering. The second new Cyanogen employee would be Qualcomm’s engineering lead Karthick Iyer, who would take his rightful position at Cyanogen as the new Vice President of Global Systems.

New Cyanogen logo

With companies like Foxconn, Qualcomm, Twitter and many others pumping millions into Cyanogen, there is no doubt the company is on the rise. Their strategy is to continue their global expansion and platform growth, which was the main reason for hiring such talented industry personalities.

“Our focus continues to be evolving the Android platform and driving innovation in mobile computing. Signals, services and systems are at the heart of building an evolved computing platform. Both Lawler and Iyer respectively are world class leaders in these areas, each having scaled some of the most successful computing and services platforms. Lawler brings a wealth of technical leadership in mobile, mapping, location, search, and cloud services. Iyer has deep expertise in end-to-end Android development. Both understand how to optimally scale engineering organizations.” -Kirt McMaster, Co-founder and CEO of Cyanogen Inc.

The company recently lost an important partner – OnePlus. This is not the end of Cyanogen in the Asian market, though. They aim to team up with “bigger Chinese vendors”. Who will they be? We are not sure yet, but CEO Kirt McMaster touts it as a loss for OnePlus, as opposed to bad news for the ROM maker.

oneplus one aa (33 of 34)

We are going to see much more from Cyanogen in the future, even if they may not accomplish their goal to overthrow the tyrannical Google presence and make Android a much more open ecosystem without limitations. Both new hires have extensive experience in the industry and have worked on huge projects. They are certainly that important puzzle piece in Cyanogen’s future plans.

What do you think about Cyanogen’s ambitions? Can they really take on Google?

Reddit mods explain why they shut the site down

It turns out that if you suddenly fire a valuable member of the community, that community will get very angry at you. Reddit CEO Ellen Pao learned that the hard way late last week when it abruptly dismissed Victoria Taylor, the company’s former director of talent who was instrumental in popularizing the site’s “AMA” (Ask Me Anything) feature. A slew of subreddits, mostly run by volunteer moderators, went private in protest of the firing over the weekend as a result. Pao eventually posted an apology for the lack of communication and promised to improve things going forward. But in an op-ed posted today in the New York Times, those same volunteer moderators said that the apology was not enough.

The primary reason for taking those sites down temporarily, according to the subreddit moderators, was to protest how Reddit’s management changes are seemingly done without consideration for the community. When Taylor was terminated, for example, apparently a scheduled AMA had to be abruptly cancelled, causing the team of moderators to panic and shut down that particular subreddit to figure things out. That, however, caused other subreddits to shut down as a show of support. This, they say, was just an example of how valuable Taylor was as a communicator and how disruptive it was to dismiss her. As for the “miscommunication” apology, the op-ed authors responded thusly:

“Miscommunication implies there was any communication at all or any kind of real planning in place to compensate for the loss, when in reality the moderators and AMA guests were left stranded. Though company leaders have apologized publicly, they still have not fully explained the decision.”

Further, they said that Taylor’s termination is just a recent example of how Reddit is disregarding not only the site’s business but also the community at large. The two op-ed authors, Brian Lynch and Courtnie Swearingen, work full-time as attorneys but also commit hours of their free time to moderating Reddit forums. In closing, they said:

“Pay attention to the user base. Users are not simply a screaming mob. They are actually asking for reasonable support, and as moderators, we are trying very hard to do what we can to make those changes happen.”

South Park is staying on the air and on Hulu through 2019

Looks like we’ll be watching the kids from everybody’s favorite quiet mountain town will be continuing their shenanigans for at least another three years — huzzah! Comedy Central announced that South Park creators Matt Smith and Trey Parker have reached a deal to extend the cultural touchstone series by another three years and 30 episodes (that’s in addition to the two remaining years on the shows current contract). Additionally, South Park Digital Studios (Parker and Smith’s joint venture with Viacom) announced a separate deal with Hulu that will see the series remain on the streaming service until 2020.

The Hollywood Reporter claims Hulu — already in tight with Viacom to stream Showtime as an add-on — paid a record-breaking $192 million for that honor. Plus, Comedy Central will offer a 50/50 split its take from the Hulu deal with Parker and Stone which, as THR points out, is one of the few instances where a digital streaming deal will help underwrite current production costs. We saw a similar setup with Netflix and AMC for The Killing, while CBS snagged a deal with Amazon for Under the Dome and Extant before those shows ever went on the air. The show’s 19th season premieres on Wednesday, September 16.

Google releases Ethernet adapter for the Chromecast in case your Wi-Fi is dodgy

The Chromecast has cemented itself as one of the must-haves for any self respecting Google/Android fan, however the fact that it requires a Wi-Fi connection means that people with dodgy Wi-Fi connections might not be able to utilize the streaming dongle to its full potential. Thankfully, Google has finally released an ethernet adapter for the Chromecast, meaning you’ll be able to connect a physical ethernet cable from your router to your Chromecast to cut out the middleman. The adapter will run you $15 USD, however while that seems like a small sum by itself, when you factor in that the Chromecast costs $35 USD on top of that, it makes the whole package a little less attractive relative to its competitors.

chromecast-ethernet-adapter2While the adapters when up on the Google Store this morning, unfortunately, they’ve already sold out.  No doubt Google will replenish stock at some point in the future – we’ll let you know as soon as we know. And as all things new at Google go, the ethernet adapter is currently only available in the US, but we assume availability around the world will follow very soon. If you feel like staring at the product page until it’s back in stock, you can hit the link below:

HTC will demo their Vive VR headset at Comic-Con this weekend

htc_vive_developer_editionIf you’re interested in testing out HTC and Valve’s joint effort VR headset, the HTC Vive, you might just have your chance this weekend. HTC is setting up a booth at Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend, which will be open to anyone who wants to demo the experience, not just Comic-Con attendees.

The booth will be open July 9th – 12th from 10 AM to 8 PM, marking the first stop of several as HTC tours the device in other spots around the country.Virtual reality is definitely something that has to be sold by letting potential customers experience it, so it’s great that HTC wants to put some feet on the ground and get the Vive in the hands of people. That’s bound to get more hype stirred up for its official launch than any commercials ever could.

Taco Bell teams up with DoorDash to deliver food right to your door

taco bellWelcome to the future, folks. Taco Bell has announced that they’re going to start testing door delivery service of their fine selection of Mexican cuisine in 200 locations. They’ve partnered up with DoorDash, a food delivery service, to handle the experiment.

If you’re in an area that supports Taco Bell delivery, all you have to do is use DoorDash’s mobile app or website to place your order, after which they’ll place your order, pick it up at the closest Taco Bell, and drop it off for you. That sounds like the best way to get your fix of Taco Bell to me.

Taco Bell hopes to bring this delivery service nationwide instead of keeping it in only a handful of locations if it goes well. I’m eagerly awaiting that day, Taco Bell.

TACO BELL® ANNOUNCES DELIVERY WITH DOORDASH TO SELECT MARKETS

IRVINE, Calif., JULY 8, 2015

Taco Bell® delivery is rolling out to select markets through a partnership with on-demand delivery service DoorDash. The delivery service will be available in over 90 cities and more than 200 restaurants throughout the Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco Bay Area and Dallas regions. The partnership provides delivery service beginning today through the DoorDash iOS, Android orwebsite. Pricing and delivery costs may vary depending on restaurant location..

“Delivery is yet another example of how we’re using technology and innovation to respond to consumers’ wants and needs, further evolving the Taco Bell experience for customers. We were one of the first to redefine convenience at QSR with our mobile app, and knowing that delivery is the no. 1 request from our consumers, we see a tremendous opportunity to bring the Taco Bell experience to fans where and when they want it most,” said Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol. “Taco Bell has always been about value and convenience, and we believe delivery is the next step in catering to today’s on-demand culture that’s driving consumer behavior.” .

The Taco Bell delivery announcement is the first national partnership for DoorDash. The Palo Alto based tech company uses a proprietary data-based logistics platform to provide a fast and affordable way for consumers to receive on-demand deliveries; something that pairs well with Taco Bell..

“Taco Bell is a natural complement to our technology and vision,” said Prahar Shah, Head of Business Development at DoorDash. “We are both committed to innovating through data-based decision making and providing an exceptional customer experience.”.

Taco Bell has been testing delivery with DoorDash in select cities and aims for this larger roll out to provide even more opportunities to listen to customer feedback and evaluate the experience, with plans to bring Taco Bell delivery nationwide..

“We’re testing and learning at the speed of the on-demand economy,” stated Tressie Lieberman, VP of Innovation and On Demand at Taco Bell. “We’re thrilled to partner with DoorDash and leverage their like-minded commitment to customer service and innovation. This partnership enables us to provide consistent quality service and the feedback we need to elevate the delivery experience and evaluate where Taco Bell delivery goes next.”.

“This partnership marks an important milestone for DoorDash,” said Tony Xu, CEO at DoorDash. “As DoorDash looks to double its footprint by the end of the year, today’s announcement shows our continued momentum in building top tier partnerships, expanding nationally, and providing the very best local delivery options to our customers.”.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 rumor roundup

samsung galaxy note 4 ui aa 13

The first half of 2015 has concluded and we have seen some amazing devices hit the market. Among the best are the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, the HTC On M9 and the LG G4, but let’s not forget there is more to come. As it goes with every year, another herd of important smartphones are to reach store shelves during the later half of the year. Some of them just as important as the typical flagships we mentioned above, if not more.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is one of the most anticipated phones year after year. We could say this series gets most of the credit for the “phablet” movement, so it is definitely an important device to keep in mind. It’s also a handset that happens to be held upon the highest industry standards and Samsung rarely disappoints. Many of us actually prefer the Galaxy Note devices over the Galaxy S series, as they are released later in the year and tend to offer a better build and newer generation specs.

samsung galaxy note edge unboxing (4 of 19)

Samsung’s popular supersized smartphones are usually released between September and October. The day when we should finally see it in stage is coming. We are getting ready to take it all in and bring you the best content once the phone is announced and released, but the world keeps spinning until then and we know the rumor mill is not about to stop turning. The leaks have started trickling in, which means we are starting to get a gist of what the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will be all about. Are you ready? Let’s go through every single murmur that has hit our feed.

Design

While the Samsung Galaxy Note series has always differentiated itself from the Galaxy S smartphones in terms of aesthetics and build, this year it’s imperative that they follow a similar design language. Samsung’s numbers keep going down and most of the credit is given to the fact that their design and build quality has always been inferior to main competitors. Pure popularity is no longer working for Sammy!

With the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung takes the team back to the drawing board and manages to do wonders. Their flagship phones are now made of quality materials like aluminum and glass, which makes the new handsets feel like jewels resting in your hand (at least compared to those crappy things they used to make). While previous generations of the Galaxy Note line-up have done pretty well with their plastic builds, Samsung really can’t back-pedal and downgrade when making the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

Galaxy Note 5 image from Tencent

Galaxy Note 5 image from Tencent

Thankfully, it seems Samsung is in the right path to making yet another amazingly-built smartphone. A recent image from Tencent showed us what the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 could look like once finalized, and it pretty much looks like an over-sized Samsung Galaxy S6… yet it does have its differences.

This image looks quite gorgeous, but we must say this is probably not what the phone will look like, even if it will likely have its similarities. We would put more faith on the video @OnLeaks recently leaked, which showcases a CAD design (also of anonymous origins). Now this one literally looks exactly like an overgrown Samsung Galaxy S6, except it happens to have a spot for the S-Pen.

According to the digital model, the phone should measure 123.44 x 77.31 x 10.2 mm, suggesting a large 5.7-inch display. Really, at this point that size is only a little larger than usual. The contrast is not as polarizing as it used to be, and some devices (like the Nexus 6) easily beat it. The phone is also not as thin as the Galaxy S6, but it’s not supposed to be. Keep in mind the Galaxy Note 5 should represent power and functionality, not exactly glamour.

Italian tech site HDBlog then used these CAD design to create some renders of what the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 could look like. Here are the results:

samsung galaxy note 5 render hdblog (1)

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 2 and/or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus?

I think we can all agree those Edge devices are here to stay. It will be along time before we see a flagship Samsung device launch without its Edge counterpart, and I am willing to bet my money on the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 won’t be coming to market alone. Hell, they may be launching more than one over-sized smartphone!

Rumors point towards a very interesting change in strategy. It’s said the upcoming Note device with an Edge display will come with a screen that curves around both sides, much like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. This is corroborated by some of the names the device may have, which include monikers like Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Samsung Galaxy S6 Note and the less exciting Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 2 (or 2nd gen). This is where it gets confusing, because they could all be the same, but there’s a slight chance the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is a completely different device than the upcoming Note Edge successor. We say this because the rumored specs are contradicting and all over the place.

samsung galaxy note edge review aa (10 of 26)

To be honest, it is refreshing to see Samsung doing away with the actual functionality in the Edge display. The Galaxy Note Edge was innovative and very different, but its Edge features simply didn’t offer enough features and had very little support from developers. It’s better to leave the edged screens as a purely aesthetic factor.

The name isn’t the only change we might see, though. For once, it seems like the Edge version won’t be on par with its brother device (Galaxy Note 5) in terms of power and performance. More on this in the specs section.

Display

There’s different beliefs revolving around the Samsung Galaxy Note 5’s screen. It was previously believed Samsung was testing both 2K and 4K displays, going way above today’s QHD standards. More recent reports now state the phone could have a QHD Super AMOLED display (2560x1440p) measuring as much as 5.89 inches.

samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-plus

Specifications

The rumored specs are not very solid, but we know the new Note Edge successor could have a Snapdragon 808 processor, 16 GB of internal storage, that lovely S-Pen, a 16 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front-facing shooter. This is very interesting, because this hardware is awfully similar to the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus specs we have been hearing about, making is believe these two monikers could belong to a single device.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is said to come with either a 5.4, 5.4 or 5.7-inch display. It will be powered by Android 5.1.1 and sport a Snapdragon 808 processor, 32 GB of internal storage, a 16 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front-facing shooter and a 3000 mAh battery (there were also rumors of a possible 4100 mAh battery).

usb-type-c-3

One very important rumored feature the Galaxy Note 5 is said to have is the inclusion of a USB-C connector. This would make the Samsung Galaxy note 5 the first mainstream Android smartphone to come with the latest-generation USB, which is a pretty huge deal.

Also a huge deal is the rumor of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 getting rid of expandable storage support. And considering the new design elements, we will likely also see the removable battery go out the door. We know this will play a huge part in your decision to buy the next Note!

Camera

We don’t know much about the camera aside from the fact that it should be a 16 MP shooter with OIS (optical image stabilization). There’s also said to be an 8 MP (or 5 MP) camera in the front. This is not much to go by, but knowing Samsung they won’t skimp out on these cameras. They should be nearly as good as the camera the Samsung Galaxy S6 offers, at the very least.

Oh, and don’t expect the camera bump to go away. All leaked images show it.

samsung galaxy s6 edge aa 5

Software

If there is one thing the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will have too much of, it will be software features. This is no average phone. It is called the “Note”, after all, and it is optimized to do just that – take notes. You will find your usual S-Pen features, including Action Memo, Smart Select, Screen Write, handwriting recognition and more. Not to mention the many other features Samsung usually offers, including like S Voice and Multi Window.

Of course, we also expect the Samsung Galaxy Note to come with the latest version of Android, which is Android 5.1.1 (there will likely be a newer one when the Galaxy Note 5 is released).

Release date

There were previous rumors of a July release date, but Samsung was quick to debunk that. If previous Galaxy Note announcements serve as any confirmation, we should see the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (and whatever other devices it will be launched with) announced at IFA… so in September.

Wrapping up

It’s a bit hard to give you any concrete ideas, because rumors are all over the place right now. They often contradict themselves and many of them are likely incorrect. This conglomeration of confusing information makes us wonder if there really are more diverse versions of the Note/S6 Edge in the works. Maybe there will be a Samsung Galaxy Note 5, a Galaxy Note Edge 2 and a Galaxy S6 EdgePlus? Who knows! For now we can only tell you to keep taking it all in, and to keep your eyes and ears very open. We will do the same and let you know more about the Galaxy Note 5 as additional details emerge. We are sure they will.

In the meantime, go ahead and hit the comments to tell us what you would like to see one the Samsung Galaxy note 5. I am really hoping for a full metal and glass body. I am also quite excited about the inclusion of a USB-C port. How about you?!
