Report reveals Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Note 5 specs

samsung galaxy s6 active vs galaxy s6 and edge (13 of 20)

The announcement of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and the Galaxy Note 5 is expected to take place at Berlin’s IFA 2015 in September but a new report has revealed most of the details about Samsung’s upcoming smartphones. There have been plenty of rumours about the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and whether the Note 5 would actually exist alongside it and today’s report should help clear up a lot of the confusion.

The report – courtesy of SamMobile – reveals that both handsets do exist and they will both feature Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) displays measuring 5.7 inches (or 5.67 inches to be exact). Both handsets will also be made available in black, gold, silver and white and will likely also feature fingerprint sensors in the home button like Samsung’s current flagships.

The Galaxy Note 5 (model number SM-N920) will have a flat display akin to the Galaxy S6 while the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will come with a dual-curved display like the Galaxy S6 Edge. The report also reveals that both handsets will have a glass black like Samsung’s two Galaxy S flagships, which also means that the handsets could possibly lack a removable battery or microSD card slot.

The report goes on to state that the differences between the two handsets (other than the aforementioned display differences) are likely to be internal. The Galaxy Note 5 – which is known internally as Project Noble – is expected to be the first handset to use Samsung’s Exynos 7422 all-in-one chipset – featuring a 64-bit octa-core CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and LTE modem – and Samsung was reportedly considering a 4K display before settling on a Quad HD panel.

Moving onto the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus – which is known internally as Project Zen – will be powered by a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor (like the LG G4 incidentally) and will have 32GB internal storage, a 16MP rear camera with Optical Image Stabilisation, a 5MP front facing camera and a 3000mAh battery. The handset is expected to run Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, may have the ability to shoot images in RAW format and could finally bring a long-awaited fix for the RAM issues that are plaguing the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

The reported specs of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy Note 5 suggest that we’re now looking at two smartphones that are bigger versions of the Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 respectively. Interestingly, today’s report doesn’t touch on the S-Pen – which is a mainstay feature of the Galaxy Note range – and although it’s not mentioned, it’s almost certain that Samsung will offer the S-Pen with its latest big-screen phablets.

Snapdragon 808 powered Samsung (SM-G9198) flip-phone spotted

Samsung SM-G9189 flip phone

Touchscreen handsets may have made the old flip-phone form factor seem obsolete, but there’s still a niche market for the classic design. A new Samsung phone, model SM-G9198, has just been spotted passing through China’s TEENA certification center, which might please those who are longing for a flip-phone with high-end specifications.

Starting with the display, the G9198 actually comes with two screens, one on the inside and one on the outside of the phone. Both are 3.91-inches in size and come with a 768×1280 resolution, which should be quite sharp at that size. The G9198 is packing a 1.8GHz hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC, the same processing package found inside the flagship LG G4 which seems to offer pretty similar performance to Qualcomm’s flagship 810.

Other internals include 2GB of RAM, a 16MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, a heart rate sensor and 16GB of internal storage, which can be expanded upon with a microSD card. There’s very little to complain about here if you don’t mind the small display, the G9198’s hardware certainly pushes it into the high-end bracket.

The SM-G9198 also features 4G LTE connectivity and Samsung’s latest software complete with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Size wise, the phone measures 119.7×66.6×16.7mm, which, as you would expect from this design, is a fair bit thicker than most flagships on the market right now.

No information on a launch date has been given yet. However, we aren’t expecting to see this handset appear in regions outside China, as has been the case since Samsung’s previous Galaxy Golden flip-phones.

Huawei Honor 7 sold out in China in just 2 minutes

Huawei-Honor-7 (1)

Huawei’s new Honor 7 flagship had its first flash sale in China yesterday and the smartphone seems to have gone down rather well. The company achieved a new record, selling out of stock in just 2 minutes.

The flash sale stocked 200,000 units of the Honor 7 with a few different hardware configurations, all of which were bought up in just a couple of minutes. That works out to a crazy 1,667 handsets snapped up each second.

The models on sale included the standard 16GB version for 1999 Yuan ($322), a middle option with dual-SIM LTE for 2199 Yuan ($354) and the all network compatible 64GB model for 2499 Yuan ($400).

The Huawei Honor 7 was announced at the end of last month. The smartphone features some compelling specifications for its price tag and stacks up rather nicely against many of the more expensive flagships on the market. It’s the value for money on offer here which has made the smartphone so attractive to the Chinese market.

The Honor 7 features a 5.2-inch 1080p display and is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Kirin 930 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 21MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, and comes with up to 64GB of internal storage with microSD card support for a further 128GB. Very reasonable for $400, at most.

The next Chinese flash sale for the Honor 7 is scheduled for July 14th. You’ll definitely want to open up your browser early if you want to stand a chance of grabbing one.

Critical Flash exploit emerges from Hacking Team breach

Feel safe with your fully-patched computer? If you use Flash and land on the wrong website, you may get a virus or even a cryptolocker that renders your machine unusable. That’s because a sophisticated “zero-day” exploit stolen from Hacking Team has now been released into the wild. As a reminder, Hacking Team is the infamous outfit that supplies US law enforcement and various governments around the world with digital spying tools. However, the company suffered an embarrassing attack on its own servers, and among the 400GB of data stolen were some nasty tools originally intended for use by agencies like the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

Security experts say attackers have now unleashed those tools on the internet, leaving all computers vulnerable until Adobe patches Flash, which it’s expected to do tomorrow. Malwarebytes called it “one of the fastest documented cases of an immediate weaponization in the wild, possibly thanks to the detailed instructions left by the Hacking Team.” So what can you do about it? Obviously, be careful about which sites you visit, but you may also want to either enable “click-to-play” for the Flash plug-in or disable it completely, as detailed by How-To Geek.

Meanwhile, there are questions about how this shitstorm happened in the first place. As Forbes pointed out, leaked emails show that the FBI and DEA were keen on Hacking Team’s software, which can run $500,000 for a full cross-platform setup. Other emails revealed that Hacking Team sold its wares to oppressive regimes in countries like Sudan.

Critics argue that increased cyber-spying by governments begets ultra-sophisticated hacking tools that can fall into the wrong hands. That in turn makes everyone more vulnerable, as today’s attack proves (again). Ironically, FBI director James Comey is also trying to convince lawmakers today that it should be trusted with backdoor access to encrypted cellphones. However, given the competence and questionable ethics of the companies it works with, it’s hard to see how that’s a good idea.

Google Maps for iOS can share places on Facebook

There might be a time when you quickly need to share your location on Facebook to make sure at least one person knows where you are. If that ever happens, you can just fire up Google Maps on an iPhone or an iPad, drop a pin and share your info from within the app, now that it’s been updated with the feature. The latest version’s also useful if you’re friends with someone who always seems to get lost, since it comes with the ability to share via FB’s Messenger app, as well. Plus, it brings a better Transit view to the platform with more route choices and real-time arrival info, just like the one already available on Android. Finally, you get a brand new image gallery when you update. That will make it easy to look at user-uploaded photos on Maps, which you can use to cross-reference places you’ve never visited in the past.

Sony partners with Twitch to broadcast from Xperia devices

Sony Twitch game streamign

Gaming is a key part of Sony’s broader strategy and the company has been gradually integrating gaming features with its Xperia line-up of smartphones and tablets. The latest development sees Sony partner up with Twitch, a popular video streaming platform focused on gaming.

Sony has developed an app that brings in-device broadcasting to your Android device, allowing you to stream your Android games directly to your Twitch audience. With over 35 million Twitch mobile app installs alone, there are plenty of people watching out there.

However, the app will only be available for Sony’s latest handsets, the Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z4, Xperia Z4v and the Xperia Z4 Tablet. Unfortunately, we don’t know if Sony will be brining the service to other handsets in the future.

“By partnering with an innovator like Sony Mobile … we are able to ensure our community has more avenues to embrace their passion.” – Brooke Van Dusen, Director of Business Development, Twitch

This isn’t actually the first time that Sony has teamed up with a big video partner for live streaming. The same application already works with a Youtube account. Essentially, the app uploads your Xperia screen in real time to either Youtube or Twitch.

In a previous effort to win over gamers, Sony introduced WiFi network streaming to its Xperia flagship line-up, which it calls Remote Play. This allows Playstation 4 owners to stream and play their console games on their Sony Android device over their home WiFi network.

The Live Screen Streaming app is available to download from the Google Play Store for free. If you’re keen to see what Twitch is all about, be sure to check out the official Android Authority channel, hosted by our very own Joe Hindy.

BBC to give free micro:bit computer to every 11-12 year old in the UK

BBC micro bit

Projects like Arduino and the hugely popular Raspberry Pi have helped thousands take their first steps into programming and the subject continues to become more accessible. The BBC has unveiled the new BBC micro:bit, a pocket-sized computer which will be given away for free to every child in year 7 across the UK.

The tiny computer is designed to help school children learn the basics of programming and hardware design. It comes with 25 LEDs, an on-board accelerometer and magnetometer. There’s also Bluetooth connectivity, five I/O pins and a USB port. The BBC will be launching a website later in the summer which will give students the information and tutorials they need to begin programming their little computer.

The BBC micro:bit is the spiritual successor to the 1981 BBC Micro and has been developed in collaboration with 29 partners, including a few names that you’re sure to recognise from the mobile industry.

BBC micro bit hardware

The computer is built around a small ARM Cortex-M0 CPU, which makes the computer a fair bit faster, cheaper and less power consuming than its spiritual predecessor. The BBC micro:bit is also based on ARM’s mbed software and hardware development tools, which are already powering a range of embedded development boards.

Samsung is also involved in the project, having developed the tools to enable the micro:bit to communicate with smartphones and tablets. So designers could use the micro:bit to remotely control their phone’s camera. Samsung is also building an application that will support the micro:bit’s coding environment on mobile devices.

The BBC micro:bit will be shipped out to around 1 million 11-12 year olds this October. The project will also be open-sourced and the BBC will launch a not-for-profit organization to develop a commercially available unit at some point. So we’ll all be able to join in the programming fun.
