What’s on your HDTV: ‘The Strain’, Shark Week, Hannibal Burress

Shark Week is in full swing on Discovery, as the network tries to find even more shark-related programming it somehow hasn’t covered yet. (The answer, apparently, is to just make stuff up — we won’t be fooled again by Alien Sharks and Ninja Sharks.) Still, Sunday night is packed, with the return of Ray Donavan, Masters of Sex and The Strain. On streaming Netflix is bringing a new Chris Tucker comedy special, and will also post Monsters: Dark Continent this week. Comedy Central has more Key & Peele, plus the debut of Hannibal Burress’ new show Why? It’s a sequel to the movie Monsters, which if you saw it, you probably also saw on Netflix streaming. In gaming, Rocket League is coming to PC, and on PS4 as a PlayStation Plus game. Look after the break to check out each day’s highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

NASA’s latest Pluto images actually show a planet

Pluto seen from 7.8 million miles away

At last, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is sending back images of Pluto that look (slightly) better than brown blobs or pixel art. The probe has delivered a new batch of images from between 7.8 million to 9.2 million miles away, or close enough that the dwarf planet is starting to reveal some meaningful detail. There’s still no explanation for those giant spots, but it’s evident that there’s a “continuous swath” of dark ground near the equator. And if you’d like pictures that are better than fuzzy, you might not have to hold out for too much longer. New Horizons should be considerably closer when it recovers from its recent glitch, and the expected July 14th flyby should produce a ton of extra detail.

In these new cars, your phone gets its own air conditioner

In these new cars, your phone gets its own air conditioner

By Kim Lachance Shandrow, Entrepreneur Staff

Smartphones don’t play well with hot cars. If you’ve ever received the dreaded temperature warning on your phone’s home screen after leaving it in a sizzling vehicle for too long, you know exactly what we’re talking about. And so does General Motors.

The struggling American automaker knows your phone needs to cool out in the dog days of summer, too, just like you. If it doesn’t, if the temperature around your iPhone, Android or, fine, your BlackBerry, exceeds about 95 degrees, the high heat can shorten its battery life and potentially slow down its processor. Double bummer. Worse, permanent damage could occur and, in rare cases, the gadget you can’t live without could completely go kaput.

Terrifying, right? Well, GM, in a bid to “find new roads” and connect with tech-savvy younger drivers, doesn’t want any of the above to happen to your precious phone either. That’s why the 107-year-old company is adding a fancy new smartphone air-conditioning feature to some of its 2016 Chevy models, a modern move its hailing an “industry first.”

Finally, your phone can chill out in its own, personal “Active Phone Cooling” cubby, basically a nook outfitted with a plastic a/c vent nozzle. That is if you get behind the wheel of a wireless-charging equipped 2016 Chevy Cruze, Impala, Malibu or Volt.

GM says its engineers stumbled upon the idea while testing a smartphone wireless charging feature. “They noticed some smartphones would suspend charging or shut off all together after only a few minutes in high temperatures inside a car’s cabin,” a statement from the Detroit-based company reads. To combat the problem, they simply directed an air vent connected to the car’s a/c and ventilation system at the “charging bin where the phone rests.” And — easy, breezy — cooled air helps keep your phone from frying like an egg. Crisis averted…or so they say.

“Innovation doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel,” Impala engineer Dan Lascu says. “Sometimes simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem.”

Simple — or just plain silly — we see this thing catching on, given ‘Murica’s incurable addiction to smartphones. Someday, probably sooner than later, maybe smartphone a/c will come standard in all vehicles, even the ones we won’t drive. Either way, here’s to hoping better backseat a/c routing rolls out first to keep other precious cargo — like living things, pets and kids — cool.

Deal: unlocked Samsung Galaxy S6 only $499.99 on eBay!

samsung galaxy s6 review aa (4 of 45)

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is definitely one of the best smartphones around, but it’s by no means cheap. In fact, it happens to be one of the most expensive phones in the market, making it seem like that super thin profile is a knife cutting right through your pocket. Thankfully, here at Android Authority we are always on the lookout for great deals to share with you. Today might be your lucky day, because eBay’s latest offer is hot!

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is currently being sold for only $499.99 on eBay. This is a pretty awesome deal considering the device is new to the market and usually goes for $600 at the lowest. Essentially, you get a $100 discount, but that is not the only treat buyers would get.

samsung galaxy s6 review aa (3 of 45)

This phone is unlocked and new. Not refurbished or used… completely new. To make matters even better, the eBay seller is allowing you to choose between a bevy of available colors, including black, white, gold and blue. Oh, and shipping is completely free in the USA.

I would seriously jump all over this deal if I was looking to get an off-contract, unlocked, high-end smartphone. My only gripe with the Samsung Galaxy S6 is its ridiculous battery life, but if you can get past that issue it’s one hell of a phone. It has top-notch specs, an insanely good camera and the build quality we have been begging Samsung for.

You can go ahead and read our Samsung Galaxy S6 review to see what this phone is all about. You can’t really beat this price! Have a blast purchasing it and hit the comments to let us know if you are signing up for this deal. Is it what you were looking for?

Apple Working to Add Home Sharing for Music in iOS 9

homesharingWith the release of iOS 8.4 and the new built-in Apple Music service, Apple removed Home Sharing for music on iOS devices, a move that many Home Sharing users have been upset about.

It was unclear if Home Sharing for music would be re-added in the future, but according to iTunes chief Eddy Cue, Apple is planning to add Home Sharing to iOS 9. In response to a tweet about the removal of Home Sharing for music, Cue tweeted “We are working to have Home Sharing in iOS 9.”

Wording in the release notes for the last iOS 8.4 beta suggested that Home Sharing and Genius Mixes were “not currently available,” hinting that the features could return at a later date, and it appears that is indeed Apple’s plan.

While Home Sharing for music has been removed in iOS 8.4, the feature is still available for video. Home Sharing for music also remains available on the Mac and the Apple TV. It is unclear when Home Sharing for music will be introduced in iOS 9, but the next beta is expected later this week.

In recent weeks, Apple has been embracing social media, with Eddy Cue answering several questions about Apple Music and related services. Cue also used Twitter to announce Apple’s plans to pay artists during the Apple Music free trial after an open letter from Taylor Swift, and he informed users about an upcoming iOS 9 beta seed that will add Apple Music to the new operating system.

Apple Stores to carry third-party accessories in custom boxes

Apple's third-party packaging

Apple is well-known for being very particular about its packaging… and it apparently cares about other companies’ packaging, too. According to 9to5Mac, the tech giant is telling retail staff that it will soon sell third-party accessories in boxes co-designed by Apple… and possibly only in those boxes. Yes, that familiar minimalist look would soon spread to just about everything in the store. The move would ostensibly help you find what you’re looking for and make sure that it works with your devices. Many of the familiar brands in Apple stores are reportedly on board with the idea, including Incase, Mophie and Logitech.

If the leak is accurate, you could see this change spread to all stores next week. Apple’s recently opened Upper East Side store in Manhattan might already serve as a good preview, in fact. Whether or not you’ll like the shift is another matter. It could save you from having to explore confusing packaging to see if a case will work with your iPhone, but it could also introduces a not-so-helpful sameness — is the iPad keyboard you want in this modest white box, or that modest white box? Also, the implication is that you may lose easy access to some products whose manufacturers can’t or won’t partner on new packaging. This wouldn’t be a surprising move for a company that cares a lot about its image, but it might not help if it forces you to visit multiple stores to get everything you want.

Laser projection creates galloping horse movie on the clouds

A bright green horse was projected across the sky over Nottingham late last month. It wasn’t a Bat-Signal-style projection that was made from a searchlight on the ground. Instead, the silhouette of a rider on a horse was projected directly onto the clouds from a Cessna 172 aircraft that flew over the city in the UK. Artist Dave Lynch created the first of its kind mobile projection with a zoopraxiscope, a movie projector that made its debut back in 1879. He repurposed the historical device and swapped its original light source with a laser for precision and efficiency. The display wasn’t clear from the ground, but viewed from the plane it looked like a horse galloping through the dark clouds.

The original zoopraxiscope was created by Eadweard Muybridge, an English photographer who pioneered and studied motion photography. The device used a slit method and each pocket held a glass disc with an image. When rotated, the sequential images would project the illusion of movement. This method worked well at the time but it created images that were too dim for Lynch’s project. He needed to sustain a projection on the clouds from about 50 meters away. He turned to scientists Mike Nix and Ben Whitaker in the chemistry department at University of Leeds for insight into new laser techniques. “[Laser] gives a sharp focus at any distance which is critical to attempt projection on the nebulas media of clouds at such short range,” Lynch told us. “We also adapted the zoopraxiscope with a series of specially made lenses, which make the 19th century technology [much] more efficient so we can see the projection against the clouds.”

Lynch spent the last three years working on mobile projections. He first thought of it when he read a detailed paper on non-lethal weapons by the US Air Force published in the early ’80s that listed the concept of “Holographic, Prophets.” The idea that the image of an ancient god could be projected over enemy territory as a psychological experiment inspired Lynch to create the projection in the sky. Initially he wanted to create an open source version for artists and activists. But over the years, he became cautious of the implications. “We specifically chose to stay away from the commercial requests, away from logos and social media stunts,” he said. “We all have a relationship to the clouds, the sense of looking up and dreaming, the project is rooted in [those] hopes and dreams.”

Microsoft has $500K in prize money for HoloLens science projects

Microsoft wowed me a few weeks ago with its internal HoloLens programs, but like we’ve seen with Kinect, the coolest uses aren’t always the ones Redmond devised. To help make more applications a reality, the tech giant has opened up what it’s calling the Academic Research Request for Proposals. Five awards — each including $100,000 and two HoloLens development kits — will go to accredited universities and be announced this October 6th. The official reasoning here is that Microsoft wants to “better understand the role and possible applications for holographic computing in society.” So, to see what people outside of the Redmond campus think augmented reality is capable of. Got it. Other objectives include spurring research for mixed reality and generally getting more people to make holograms. A few examples the company lays out are data visualizations (similar to Epic Games) and creating 3D models for medical training.

Microsoft stresses that these proposals need to be absolutely complete and that those submitting them be fully capable of carrying out the research or experiments. From the sounds of it, projects that answer high-value research questions and could be easily published in places like academic journals will curry favor among judges. All that to say, Microsoft isn’t giving any of these awards out lightly. Think your US-based institution has what it takes? Deadline for sign-ups is September 5th.

Documentary explains why ‘Shenmue 3’ is a big deal

The Shenmue series represents a milestone in the gaming industry for many fans, a point where console experiences truly took off. The first Shenmue, released in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast, was an immersive, emotional, cinematic role-playing game that expanded the definition of an action experience and pushed existing technology to its limits. A new documentary from filmmaker Adam Sipione and Fauxpop Media, A Gamer’s Journey: The Definitive History of Shenmue, dives into the franchise’s history and explores the recent announcement of Shenmue 3. Series creator Yu Suzuki revealed Shenmue 3 and its $2 million Kickstarter on-stage during Sony’s E3 2015 press conference, and nine hours later, the project had cleanly smashed that goal. Check out the teaser for A Gamer’s Journey, including footage direct from Sony’s E3 showcase and accompanying fan reactions, below.

Microsoft’s new Tossup app aims to make event planning easier than ever

Microsoft’s Garage team has already created a number of experimental applications for Android, and today we’re getting a good look at what’s next to come from the company. The newest app developed by the Garage is called Tossup, and it’s been designed to make event planning and opinion-gathering much easier.

If you’re appointed the not-so-fun task of figuring out where your friends want to go for drinks after work or for dinner on a particular night, Tossup may help you out with that. You can create polls to get quick “yes” or “no” responses from your friends, and also get opinions on any other topic you can think of. It also has a handy built-in messaging platform so you can share links and get opinions in real-time.

Tossup AA

It can oftentimes be quite difficult to get all of your friends or co-workers to weigh in on a particular event, especially when group text messaging doesn’t work extremely well across all platforms and not everyone is too fond of planning events through Facebook. The app is free from the Google Play Store, and actually seems pretty easy to use so far. If you’re interested, head to the Play Store link below for more details.
