LG has been known to release a larger device in the latter half of the year, and the latest report details the alleged hardware of this so-called LG G Pro 3. We’ve also heard rumours about a LG G4 Pro, and we’re pretty sure that these two rumoured devices are one and the same due to their very similar specifications: the latest report details the G Pro 3 as a device with a 6-inch Quad HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage and a microSD slot, 20.7MP rear camera and 8MP front camera. That’s remarkably similar to the previous rumour which said the device had instead a 5.8-inch display and a 27MP rear camera.

The report goes on to say that the G Pro 3 would likely have a fingerprint scanner – because it’s all the rage right now – and will ship with Android 5.1. The price has also detailed as around $790 USD, though we’re most cautious about the pricing because it always varies greatly region to region. All the same, if the device detailed here comes to life, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 might have a serious contender in the phablet space, a space that has seen few challengers for the perennial phablet star.

China nails Samsung and Oppo over smartphone bloatware

Germany Gadget Show Samsung

A minor Chinese consumer protection group has filed lawsuits against Samsung and Oppo to contest the pair’s use of bloatware on their smartphones. The Shanghai Consumer Council believes that the two companies install far too many additional apps on their devices and then make it difficult for them to be easily removed. The group says that it was motivated to launch the legal broadside after a high number of complaints from users. It believes that people are aggrieved that they’ve got less storage space than expected, and that these apps slurp down excessive quantities of data.

The council told the Shanghai Daily that, when it tested a local Galaxy Note 3, it found 44 pre-installed apps, while the Oppo Find 7a had 71. It’s important to point out, however, that the agency doesn’t explain how it reached those figures or how it defines an unwanted app. We’re skeptical since we know that many of the additional apps on the Find 7a are simply user guides with shortcut buttons. In addition, carriers probably are partly to blame for bundling their own software on top.

The council hopes that the move will deter other businesses from going heavy with the extra software, and to force persistent offenders to inform consumers of the bloatware. According to the paper, both companies now have two weeks to issue a response, and we’ve reached out to both just in case they’ve got any more comment.

BMW has a hydrogen-powered 5 Series

Battery-powered EVs are in the spotlight right now, but that doesn’t mean car manufacturers aren’t looking at alternative fuel sources. At its “Innovation Day” in France, BMW unveiled a prototype 5 Series GT that uses a hydrogen fuel cell to power its electric motor. We’ve seen the company experiment in this space before — the Hydrogen 7 used the element to power a combustion engine — but this is its first complete FCV package. Unlike the Hydrogen 7, which managed roughly 124 miles on hydrogen, the modified 5 Series can easily top 300. With 245 horsepower under the hood it’s no slouch either, although we doubt it would keep pace with BMW’s electric i8 in a drag race.

BMW is working alongside Toyota, which created the $57,000 Mirai, to develop an industry-approved set of components by 2020. That’s a long way off, but BMW hopes it’ll lead to cars that combine hydrogen fuel cells with its electric eDrive system. It might not be a one-shot solution to gasoline — building an affordable, pervasive network of hydrogen stations isn’t easy — but BMW and others are keen to explore every avenue.

At its R&D event, BMW also showed off a new water injection system for its 1 Series hatchback. The liquid is fired into the engine as a fine spray and quickly evaporates, cooling combustion temperatures by roughly 25 degrees Celsius. A similar technology has been trialled in a BMW M4, but there’s a key difference here: the M4 was a MotoGP safety car and drew water from a five-litre tank. The 1 Series, meanwhile, never has to be replenished because it syphons condensed water from the air conditioning system. Water injection is designed for turbocharged engines, but BMW says it can be fine-tuned to improve either power or fuel economy. So whether you’re driving around the block or the iconic Nürburgring, one day this system could push your car just that little bit further.

Apple Pay reportedly reaches the UK on July 14th

Apple Pay UK's initial partners

Irked that Apple Pay is only officially slated to reach the UK sometime in July? Don’t worry — you might not have to wait all month to see it. Multiple retailer leaks at 9to5Mac point to Apple launching its iPhone tap-to-pay service in Old Blighty on July 14th, or soon enough that you can likely use it if you’re off to one of the country’s many summer music festivals. Just don’t expect to splurge on more than a quick bite to eat while you’re out. That £20 (soon to be £30) contactless payment cap seriously limits how much you can spend, so the British implementation won’t be quite as convenient as it is for Americans.
