Bethesda’s Fallout Shelter coming to Android next month

fallout_shelter_download_nowGood news for Fallout fans; Bethesda’s Pete Hines has confirmed that Fallout Shelter, the currently iOS exclusive Fallout game, should be heading to Android next month. Sure, that’s a little delayed, but it’s unfortunately not the only time we’ve seen Android apps delayed from their iOS counterparts.

Anybody else excited to get a taste of Fallout before Fallout 4 comes out this November?

Just in time for the start of the actual race, Playsoft has released Tour de France 2015 which will let you create your own destiny in the most famous of all bicycle races. If you’re a bike race buff, you’ll love the level of control you have in this game – taking the helm of the race team, you’ll manage your team’s strategy to win including training and even food supply. And you won’t just be using faceless, imaginary characters in your team either – you’ll be able to piece together your team from the 110 actual riders who make up the field in this year’s race.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the game has been released in this form – yearly iterations of the game come out just before the race starts. However, Playsoft says some improvements to the game’s AI mean that it will now be more difficult to win – hopefully not too difficult. If you’re ready to take the plunge for another 21 stages on your mobile device, you’ll have to fork out $3.70 USD and hit the Play Store links below to get started.

What do you think about Tour de France 2015? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

DNA sequencing shows how woolly mammoths got that way

Dinosaurland in White Post, Virginia

In what is being called the “most comprehensive” study of its kind, a team from the University of Chicago claims that it has revealed the massive amount of genetic change needed for woolly mammoths to adapt to their arctic environment. The study, which was published on July 2 in Cell Reports, shows that genes controlling everything from skin and hair development to fat metabolism, insulin signaling — even skull shape — differed from their contemporary elephant kin.

“This is by far the most comprehensive study to look at the genetic changes that make a woolly mammoth a woolly mammoth,” study author Vincent Lynch, PhD, of the University of Chicago, said in a statement. “They are an excellent model to understand how morphological evolution works, because mammoths are so closely related to living elephants, which have none of the traits they had.”

And while the woolly mammoth genome has been extensively studied (two other mammoths had their genes sequenced just this April) these efforts have typically only generated limited insight into how the animals evolved. However, in this study, the team found 1.4 million unique genetic variants affecting the proteins produced by some 1,600 genes. These results probably won’t help scientists reconstruct a modern-day mammoth line (at least, not yet) but it will help geneticists better understand the the molecular basis of their evolution.

Android Wear gets a YouTube app, complete with Chromecast support

android wear youtube 1Android Wear apps are growing pretty rapidly, and a new app has hit the Play Store that will let you watch YouTube videos right on your wrist. The app is appropriately called Video for Android Wear & YouTube and will stream YouTube videos right to your Android Wear smartwatch. I’m not sure I’d really enjoy watching anything on a tiny watch-sized screen, but hey, options are cool.

In addition to functioning as a YouTube player, the app has a few other tricks up its sleeve. You can cast videos directly from your watch with this, which I could definitely see coming in handy. Find the video you want using its voice-navigated search menus, then quickly cast the video up to your television without ever having to touch your phone. It would be like having a remote control that’s always on your wrist.

Other than that, the app also supports audio playback through Bluetooth-connected speakers. That’s especially important since most Android Wear watches don’t actually have speakers on them, so don’t expect to watch videos exclusively on your watch if you care about sound.

The app is free, and while it seems a bit like a novelty app, it might be worth checking out just to show off at parties.

Video for Android Wear & YouTube app bringing videos to… your watch?

Screen Shot 2015-07-02 at 5.00.48 PM

You know the world has gone nuts when people start watching videos on their smart watches. It’s simply not what Android Wear devices were made for, and it truly beats the purpose of a wearable, but it may have its benefits (which we can talk about later). The point is it’s now possible to enjoy your videos straight from your wrist, thanks to the new app Video for Android Wear & YouTube.

Video for Android Wear & YouTube allows smart watch owners to view YouTube videos on their tiny screens. After opening the app, one can simply perform a voice search to find any video. One is then presented with a plethora of results you can scroll through. Select one and you are ready to go! The video starts playing on your tiny screen and you are presented with options to pause, resume, seek and control volume.

Sound is an important part of a good video experience, right? We know most of you are wondering exactly how that works on the Video for Android Wear & YouTube app. Android Wear smart watches have no speakers! Thankfully, there is a solution to this. You can use any Bluetooth headphones or speaker to enjoy your clips to their fullest. These have to be connected directly to the watch, though, not the phone.

Still not satisfied? I mentioned an app like this may have its benefits, and that is what we are going to talk about now. Videos for Android Wear & YouTube (they seriously need a shorter name!) comes with full Chromecast support. This makes it unbelievably simple to watch YouTube videos on the large screen when your phone is not within reach, or when you are simply feeling too lazy to pull it out of your pocket.

Interested? You can head over to the Google Play Store to download the Video for Android Wear & YouTube (really?!). It is free to download, but offers in-app purchases. Developer appfour mentions it’s compatible with all Android Wear devices, so you shouldn’t have a problem. If it takes a while for the app to work, it’s because the Android Wear part of the app is larger than usual. Just give it some time.

Who is downloading? Is this really an app you see yourself using?

Is this Blackberry’s first Android smartphone?

Blackberry's first Android smartphone leak

Evan Blass or “Evleaks” came out on Twitter today to announce Blackberry’s new phone the “Venice”. He also said it was heading to AT&T soon. He later posted the picture you see above which looks to be a Blackberry Passport, but has a Android keyboard. The entire image is not clear as to exactly what the phone will look like, but one thing that is strange is it features a physical keyboard and an onscreen keyboard.

We have been hearing a lot of talk lately that Blackberry will be coming out with an Android powered smartphone, but it was only just talk. This may be the first actual leak of what is probably a test device. Possibly using an existing Blackberry Passport to test out the spacing etc of the Android operating system on it’s peculiar square screen?

This might be Blackberry’s first Android phone

Rumors of a fully Android-powered Blackberry device popped up again last month, and today Evan Blass aka evleaks has posted a picture showing a glimpse of the phone. Specs for the alleged “Venice” popped up on N4BB a couple of weeks ago, calling it a slider with a 5.4-inch screen, 18MP rear camera and 1.8GHz Hexa-core CPU. According to Blass, the Venice will run Android, and is coming to AT&T first.

Fallout Shelter for Android is coming out in August

When Fallout Shelter was released on iOS only at E3 2015, the Android gaming community gave a collective sigh – while a version for Android was promised, it was yet another case of platform favouritism that is by now way beyond wearing thin. Still, we’d prefer to get the game at least, which has had a barnstorming run on the Apple App Store, and it appears it could be sooner than we expected with Bethesda PR guru, Pete Hines, saying that Fallout Shelter for Android is coming out in August, or thereabouts:

There does seem to be a little bit of tendency in Hines’ statement, but we’ll probably find out sooner rather than later if this is the actual window when the game is going to be released. If you haven’t heard, Fallout Shelter is set in the Fallout universe, putting you in charge of a vault during the nuclear apocalypse. You’ll have to manage and improve your vault in order to keep your community alive and healthy and adopts the cartoon appearance of all the ads that featured in Bethesda’s Fallout promo art.

Fallout Shelter likely launching for Android in August

fallout-shelter

Fallout Shelter was announced only a couple weeks ago. It seemed to be a very fun and entertaining game, but us Android fans were a bit upset about the fact that it was an iOS-only release at launch. What about Android? We had nothing but the promise of a release to come “soon”. Today we are finally getting a release window straight from Bethesda.

A fan took it to Twitter to politely ask a Bethesda employee about the release of Follout Shelter on Android. Bethesda’s own Pete Hines then answered that progress was going well, and though there was no release date announced, he expected the game to “be out next month” – so August.

It’s not really an official statement yet, but it’s as close as we can get to it. The information comes straight from the dog’s mouth, making it nearly as credible as an announcement. We still have some time to wait before Fallout Shelter reaches our favorite mobile OS, so you may want to get yourself another cool game to play in the meantime. Either that or go ahead and download it for iOS if you have access to one of Apple’s devices. It’s pretty much what I’ve been forced to do!

I must admit I’ve been playing this game for quite some time and I am in love with it. I have spent countless hours building my shelter up to many underground levels. I have so many residents I can no longer remember which is which, except for a few very leveled up ones. All I do is look at their stats and put them in a room where they will be most productive for the vault’s well-being!

Who else is playing this game? Do you love it as much as I do? Are you waiting for it to hit Android? Hit the comments to share your thoughts!

MasterCard is testing a new way for you to pay with your face

MasterCard Mobile World Congress

MasterCard announced on Thursday that it’s looking to add a layer of biometric security to its credit cards and all user will need to do is simply take a selfie. The system will create a digitized map of your face, convert that map into a hash and compare it to the hash stored on Mastercard’s servers. Users will be able to pay through a mobile app with either their fingerprints or by staring into the device and blinking once. The blink is used to prevent someone from just holding up a picture of you to spoof the system. What’s more, “They’re storing an algorithm, not a picture of you,” Phillip Dunkelberger, who runs Nok Nok Labs, told CNN Money. “And I’m sure they’re doing the appropriate stuff to guard it.”

The company reportedly already has deals in place with Google, Apple, Blackberry and Microsoft, with hopes to begin a limited 500-person pilot program later this fall. Once they work out all the kinks with the new system, it could be available to the public as early as next year.
