NSA can restart bulk data collection, says surveillance court

washington october 26 ...

The ongoing saga around the NSA’s bulk data collection program is getting even more confusing. A U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ruled yesterday that the program can temporarily resume, refuting a Second Circuit court decision from May deeming it illegal, reports the New York Times. “Second Circuit rulings are not binding” said the surveillance court’s Judge Michael Mosman, in an opinion released today, “and this court respectfully disagrees with that court’s analysis, especially in view of the intervening enactment of the U.S.A. Freedom Act.” The news comes after Congress voted to reform government surveillance by voting in the Freedom Act in June, which effectively ends bulk data collection by requiring agencies to get court approval when requesting information from telecoms and other firms. The White House quietly moved to resume the program shortly after the Freedom Act was signed.

So what does this mean? Government agencies will be able to continue bulk data collection for the next 180 days — the grace period specified in the Freedom Act for winding down the program. The ACLU, meanwhile, says it will ask the Second Circuit to issue an injunction to stop data collection during this period. That’s something the court didn’t do when it ruled back in May, since it was holding out to see how Congress would vote on the Freedom Act.

Acer rolls out a curved, super-wide display with AMD’s gaming tech

Acer's XR341CK curved display

You can get desktop PC displays that are curved, super-wide and gaming-friendly, but all three at once? That’s tricky. Thankfully, Acer thinks it has an answer. The company has just launched the 34-inch XR341CK in the US, giving you a curvy, 21:9 aspect ratio LCD with AMD’s anti-tearing FreeSync tech built-in. So long as you have a fast-enough gaming rig (including newer AMD graphics, if you want FreeSync), you’ll get an extra-immersive canvas for your first-person shooters and racing sims.

You won’t get 4K (this is “just” a 3,440 x 1,440 LCD), but you’ll still find DisplayPort input, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI 2.0 and a USB 3.0 hub. There’s also a 14W speaker system if the screen takes up the free space you’d normally use for audio gear. This monster monitor will cost $1,099 when it ships in July — no small potatoes, but potentially worth it if you’d otherwise get multiple displays to achieve the same all-encompassing effect.

Leaked Photos of Next-Generation ‘iPhone 6s’ Show Only Minor Internal Differences

The next-generation iPhone, often referred to as the “iPhone 6s,” will likely retain the same exterior design as the iPhone 6, based on purported images of the device’s rear shell obtained by 9to5Mac. The report claims the rear shell is identical to the iPhone 6 on the outside, including the same thickness and width, with only minor internal differences.

iPhone 6s 1
The leaked photos of the “iPhone 6s” reveal that the Lightning connector, speakers, microphones, headphone jack, volume rocker, mute button, sleep/wake button, SIM card slot, antenna lines and cutout for the rear-facing camera and LED flash are all identical to the iPhone 6, which is unsurprising given that “S” model iPhones have historically looked almost identical to the iPhone released one year prior.

iPhone 6s 2
While the exterior design on the “iPhone 6s” looks unchanged, the rear shell has a notably different internal mounting structure that suggests a new logic board and other components are incoming. In particular, the next-generation iPhone is rumored to include an A9 processor with 2GB of RAM, Force Touch, 7000 Series aluminum and improved 12-megapixel camera, among other changes.

Android 5.1 OTA rolling out for AT&T Moto X 2014

The wait is over for owners of the AT&T Moto X 2nd gen. as the network giant is now rolling out Android 5.1 to devices over the air. Users should be seeing the notification for the available update either today or very soon.

Android 5.1 is the small but impactful update to 5.0 Lollipop that should solve a number of problems, as well as increasing system performance and battery life. The Quick Settings menu is improved too with new animations for toggling certain actions as well as opening a quick menu when switching WiFi networks and Bluetooth connections.

The system update also improves volume controls on the phone, bringing better interruption controls when playing media. Also, exclusive to Moto X owners, comes the “chop” gesture, allowing the user to perform a chopping motion with the phone to activate the flashlight, similar to the wrist-twisting gesture that launches the camera.

Have you received the OTA update on your Moto X?

Android 5.0 Lollipop rolling out to the HTC Desire Eye on AT&T starting today

htc-desire-eye-review-aa-4-of-27

HTC’s Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi took to Twitter last night to announce that Android 5.0 Lollipop would begin rolling out to the HTC Desire Eye on AT&T starting today. For clarification, the update will begin rolling out today, June 30th, which was still “tomorrow” when Versi posted the tweet last night.

In the conversation following the tweet, HTC clarified that this is an update to Android 5.0, not 5.1. That probably won’t be a huge deal to most users with this device, though it would still be nice if the Eye was running the most recent version of Android.

If you need a refresher, HTC’s Desire Eye is actually a pretty nice smartphone. Featuring a 5.2-inch Full HD display, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and a powerful Adreno 330 GPU, the Desire Eye offers users a great overall Android experience without breaking the bank. The device is known for its 13MP rear and front-facing cameras, which actually perform quite well. For a closer look at just what this handset can do, check out the videos below for more information.
