BitTorrent Shoot shares photos and videos between platforms

It’s not that hard to exchange pics and videos these days — you can just attach them to emails or forward them via messaging apps. BitTorrent is hoping you’d still be willing to pay for an app designed to send and receive media files though, because it’s just released one called “Shoot.” The application is based on BT’s Sync technology, and it can send and receive messages between platforms. It works quite differently from what you might be used to: clicking Send opens up your gallery, where you can choose multiple images and videos. The app will then generate a QR code that any user who clicks Receive can scan to download your files.

We’d say one of its two main selling points is making it easy to transfer big batches of media files to several other devices. The other is privacy, in case you want something more secure than cloud services or messaging apps. When VentureBeat asked the company why it didn’t make the app free upon launch and offer in-app purchases down the road, BT’s answer focused on privacy: “Like with BitTorrent Sync, we never monetize the user indirectly. On Shoot, you’ll never see an ad. Sharing is fully private, so we’re not harvesting any user data,” a spokesperson told the publication.

Still, those two are probably not enough to entice most people to pony up $2 for the app. Good thing you can download it right now from Google Play, iTunes or the Windows Phone Store and get three sends for free. After that, you can either pay $2 to continue sending — or delete the app if it’s not worth the price.

Apple Watch can now be reserved online and picked up in stores

Apple will finally start selling its Apple Watch in retail stores later this month, but if you’re desperate to pick up the timepiece, there’s now another ordering method to consider. The company is rolling out a “Reserve & Pickup” system which allows you to choose a Watch online and, as the name implies, ultimately buy and collect your order in store. It’s a departure from the current appointment system, which requires that you order on the web — even if you’ve just handled the device in a shop. Instead of waiting for the mailman to deliver your Watch, you can now choose an almost immediate booking at your nearest store and walk out with the hardware sharpish. As 9to5Mac reports, the option is already live in the the UK and Australia, and we expect other countries will follow later today. It seems Apple is finally starting to catch up with its pre-order backlog from May.

The Moto X and Nexus 6 have never been cheaper in the UK

Moto X

Motorola’s no stranger to flash sales in the UK, but its latest price drop could well be the one that clears its remaining stock ahead of a hardware refresh. Following the phone maker’s two-day sale back in May, which saw it introduce healthy price cuts to the Moto X and Nexus 6, Motorola has gone even lower in an attempt to get you to buy a new phone. The Moto X has been cut by £166, pushing the 16GB model down to £229 and the 32GB version to £269 (with Moto Maker customisation included too). The newer Nexus 6 gets an £80 reduction, meaning you’ll pay £399 for 32GB and £469 for the 64GB model. It’s a significant drop when you consider that you would have paid an additional £70 for the Moto X and £50 more for the Nexus 6 during last month’s sale. If Motorola has piqued your interest but you want a little time to think things over, it’s giving you until the end of June to make a decision.

Final Fantasy 7 finally going mobile!

media_cloud_big

It has been an amazing week for Final Fantasy enthusiasts. Especially for Final Fantasy 7 fans, who will be granted a couple of requests they have been begging for for years. For starters, Sony and Square Enix totally won E3 with the announcement of a Final Fantasy 7 HD remake (can you even believe it’s actually happening?). Now Square Enix executive producer Shinji Hashimoto is telling us the original Final Fantasy 7 is finally coming to mobile!

This is a total bomb drop for the many of us who believe Final Fantasy 7 is the greatest title in the franchise, but it’s also really good news for any Square Enix fan, really. This happens to be the first Final Fantasy title with more intensive graphics (relatively speaking) to officially make it to smartphones and tablets. What’s next? Final Fantasy 8 and 9? You never know! Our devices can handle the game. I have been playing Final Fantasy 7 on Android for a long time, through an emulator, and it works perfectly.

final-fantasy-vii-cast

Let’s get back to the main topic, though. So we have good news and bad news. The good news is the 7th iteration of the popular game series will launch on mobile this summer, which is very soon. The bad news is that it will come to iOS, at least at first. We are reporting on this because we know this is a huge title for many of our fans, and it passing through this milestone means a lot to you. Not to mention, Square Enix has been great at bringing its mobile games to Android, even if it may take them a bit longer sometimes.

It’s worth noting this will be a direct port of the original game, which was released back in 1997. There’s no fancier graphics or changes – just pure Final Fantasy 7, as we know and love it.

We are left in the dark when it comes to pricing, as well, but we can assume this game won’t be cheap. Square Enix tends to charge a pretty penny for its mobile titles (usually about $15 or $16 USD), and they know Final Fantasy 7 fans will pay up without even thinking about it. I mean, I have bought this game about 4 times already, and I am definitely getting the mobile and HD versions as soon as they come out. Are you?

Here’s a trailer… just to get you all hyped up!

LG Minibeam Nano: a tiny, affordable projector for your smartphone

LG-Minibeam-Nano

A new wave of projectors has been hitting the market, targeting mobile users who want to take their large-scale media entertainment wherever they go. The most popular around here is probably the ZTE Spro 2 (read our review for all the details), but competing manufacturers like Lenovo and ASUS are not staying behind. And today we have LG joining the fight for your wall with a very enticing offer.

Enter the LG Minibeam Nano, which the manufacturer claims is the “smallest, lightest and most affordable projector to date”.  We won’t know about the latter claim until we test this little guy, but we can attest to the fact that it is pretty small and light. The Minibeam Nano weighs only 270 grams, and it measures 108 x 103 x 44 mm. It looks rather cute, but we shouldn’t underestimate it based on its looks.

LG Minibeam Nano details

LG-Minibeam-Nano-Top

It seems like a pretty good projector, packing an LED lamp that can project 100 ANSI lumens of brightness and a 100,000:1 contrast ratio in an image that can be expanded as much as 100 inches. You may want to upgrade on the 1W mono sound by plugging some speakers through the headset jack, but that is a given for any projector. These machines never come with great sound.

The LG Minibeam Nano sports an HDMI input and a USB port (which can be used for displaying HD DivX and Office documents from a thumb drive. The real kicker here is that it features wireless streaming and mirroring from smartphones, tablets and other devices. It does support WiFi Direct and Miracast, which we know a plethora of devices offer.

Yes, you can also take this little guy on-the-go. What good would its size be without real portability? The device has an integrated 3800 mAh battery that is said to last about 2 hours on a full charge. Enough for a good movie or a long presentation.

Pricing and availability

LG is staying pretty quiet about pricing for now, which is a bummer, because they claim it’s super cheap and we are interested to see how accessible this handy projector will be. What we do know is the LG Minibeam Nano will be available starting this month in North America, Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Exact price and availability will depend on the market.

Who is buying? Also, how much cash would you be willing to fork out for one of these?

CloudPlayer streams your music from Dropbox and Google Drive

DoubleTwist has released a media player separate from its main product, and this one can stream music straight from various cloud services. Aptly named CloudPlayer, the app links to your Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive accounts all at once to access any music files you’ve uploaded. The company says it “created CloudPlayer to provide an alternative to crippled, proprietary cloud music lockers that impose painful restrictions on what you can do with the music you own.” Unlike other services (company co-founder Jon Lech Johansen specifically targets Google Play Music in his blog post), DoubleTwist claims CloudPlayer doesn’t have a download or a device restriction, and it supports lossless audio.

You can also choose songs and playlists to save for offline playback on the app. Finally, the media player can stream music through Chromecast and AirPlay devices (such as Apple TV), though you’ll have to shell out $5 for the feature as an in-app purchase. Otherwise, the app is free and up right now on Google Play — DoubleTwist says it’s “launching on Android first,” so the player might head to other platforms in the future. A quick glance at the early reviews, however, shows that it’s having issues detecting music from OneDrive. The company says it’s a “bug with Microsoft’s OneDrive API,” and it’s already taking steps to fix the problem.

Topeka for Android will help developers build a better Material Design experience

topeka-new

Material designed came around to change everything. It is a very good looking, sleek and playful design language, but it may be a bit intimidating to adopt it. Especially for developers who have been sticking to their own design aspects for a long time. Google knows you may need a little help getting the right elements, so they have decided to offer better help by releasing Topeka for Android.

For those who may not know about this tool: Topeka was previously released as a web app in order to help developers understand how elements of Material Design worked, which include transitions, animations and layers. And if the idea is to create a consistent experience across all apps, Google did right by offering a clear example that works on a mobile device, as well as on the web. The tool is only being improved now by actually being released on the platform it is meant to serve.

Things get much more complicated as you start scrolling down the official blog post from Android Developers, as it is mostly developer talk (a bunch of code), but they go over some quick tips on transitions, animations, FAB placement, Round Outline Provider, Property Animations and Vector Drawables. You can go ahead and check out the official blog post if you know what those things mean and/or want to learn more!

Oh, and if you are a developer looking to get your hands on Topeka for Android, you can get it all straight from GitHub. Have fun and make some awesome apps for us! Thanks for all the hard work.

‘Lara Croft GO’ coming later this year from Square Enix, the Tomb Raider variant of Hitman GO

Every gamer out there has, at some point in their life, played some iteration of Tomb Raider. Myself, it was the original game from 1996, Tomb Raider. A lot has changed with the series, including Lara Croft being in many of the titles, which always makes me think of Angelina Jolie now, thanks a lot Hollywood. The most recent Android releases with Lara Croft from Square Enix was Lara Croft: Relic Run and the original Tomb Raider I.  Now the company is expanding the brand with another Tomb Raider / Lara Croft title called Lara Croft GO.

Just like Square did with Hitman Go, you will take control of the infamous Lara Croft in a turn based exploration puzzle experience. The trailer gives you some indication of how it will look and play out. I expect a similar mechanic that Hitman GO brought to the table along with a similar price tag mixed with in-app purchases. Fans of the turn-based strategy gameplay and fans of the Tomb Raider games are sure to jump on it in a hurry. We will keep our eyes peeled for the launch of the game and let you all know more then.

‘Gears of War: Ultimate Edition’ and ‘Killer Instinct’ will come to PC

Gears of War Ultimate Edition

Microsoft hasn’t offered a whole lot of affection to PC gamers in recent years, but it’s making some reparations for that today: the company’s Phil Spencer has revealed at the PC Gaming Show that both Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and the 2013 version of Killer Instinct will come to Windows 10. He didn’t have much to say about when these ports will show up, or whether or not they’ll have any new tricks up their sleeves. However, Iron Galaxy Studios’ Dave Lang has confirmed Spencer’s hint that KI will have Fable Legends-style cross-platform play that lets you brawl with your Xbox One-toting friends.

This isn’t the same as bringing a truly new Gears of War or other cutting-edge Xbox titles to the PC. Still, this and Windows 10’s gaming features are welcome signs that Microsoft’s perception of computer gaming is improving. And hey, Hello Games also mentioned at the show that No Man’s Sky will launch on the PC at the same time as the PlayStation 4 version — if you don’t like Microsoft’s offerings, you’ll have at least one other hotly anticipated title waiting in the wings.

[Thanks, Kristy]

The LG G4 already offers a ton of benefits that many users are clamoring for. Hardware wise it packs a fair amount of power with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB or RAM, a 5.5 inch 2560 x 1440 display with a 538 ppi and Android 5.1 on board. It is quite a beautiful device. Not to mention the 16MP camera with insane abilities like shooting in RAW format and adjustable shutter speed. Toss in the removable battery, interchangeable back plates and micro SD support (up to 2TBs) and it has the making of being the best handset on the market, in many eyes. At the time of launch LG pushed out a monumental promotion for early adopters of the device and they have now extended the offer a little bit longer.

For those who don’t already know, I’ll tell you all about it. If you picked up an LG G4 you could head over to the LG offers page and type in a little bit of information like proof of purchase and such, and LG would ship you out a spare 3,000 mAh battery with charging cradle for it along with a 32GB micro SD card. The offer crossed all carriers, in the US, and even to Amazon, Best Buy and the likes. Previously you had until June 21st to submit your details to be able to claim the extras, which LG values at $105 worth of goods. Now you have until June 30th. That gives you another 9 days to make up your mind and grab the device.

LG G4 Promotion

If you already picked one up and didn’t know about the promo you might want to dig out your receipt and get your goodies ASAP. Simply direct your browser to LG G4 promotion page.
