Google Translate gets more conversational
Google Translate is notorious for spewing out either oddly worded or overly formal results, but the company says it’s getting better thanks to people’s help. Mountain View’s online translator is now more adept at figuring out informal speech — for instance, it can tell if you want to ask “Is everything alright?” when what you’ve typed in has another more literal translation, as you can see below the fold. That’s all made possible by the volunteers who spend time translating phrases and checking the quality of other people’s submissions on the Translate community website. The company promises to incorporate more and more translations over time as its service learns each language better. Hopefully, that means locals won’t look at us funny next time we try to use it overseas.

Hype train engaged: Microsoft could be adopting Android on its future smartphones

If you’ve been following tech news at all over the last few years, you’ll know that Microsoft has become a smaller and smaller player in the smartphone space with each passing year. While it’s still pushing out brightly coloured Lumia Windows Phones, it’s not really improving things overall for the tech giant, so it’s pretty plain to see that something needs to give – if the rumours that have dropped today are to be believed, that “something” might be pretty drastic. According to @MSFTnerd, Microsoft could be adopting Android as their operating system of choice on smartphones, which would be an huge call given that Microsoft’s biggest ever deployment of Windows, Windows 10, which is to also roll out on Windows Phones, is scheduled to be in a month’s time. Of course, the two plans might not even be related, but it’s impossible to think about one without the other at the moment.
How would this work logistically, you ask? Well, it wouldn’t be a one-way transaction – for Microsoft to use Android, and also bundle its Microsoft apps for Android use, Microsoft would request use of Google‘s Maps, YouTube, and Search – things that Google exceeds in, and Microsoft… less than exceeds in. Obviously, we have to suggest taking this news with a grain of salt (maybe even a bag), but its tantalizing to just consider what a partnership like that would reap.
What do you think about Microsoft using Android as its operating system of choice? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Google releases Android 5.1.1 build LMY48G for Nexus 7 (2013)
Google certainly hasn’t forgotten the Nexus 7, more specifically the 2013 edition. The latest build now available is Android 5.1.1 (LMY48G). There isn’t an OTA yet, so your only option for now is manually flash via fastboot. If you you have done this before, which I am sure most of you have, then this should be a breeze. Remember to download the system images under the code name “razor”.
For those who don’t want to get their hands dirty, be sure to check your device every so often to see if the build is available via Settings > About Tablet > System Updates.
As always when performing updates of any kind, be sure to backup any data you don’t want to loose just incase things go haywire during the update.

Microsoft wants to make you funnier in online chats

Do you constantly struggle to make jokes? Are you one of the millions of folks who wishes they could be spontaneously funny when communicating via the internet? Microsoft Research has some news (PDF) for you. The company’s developed a web-based chat system dubbed “Cahoots” that analyzes text in your messages and suggests memes and reaction GIFs based on context and perceived emotion of the sender. It can even auto-generate memes on the fly using existing templates (think QuickMeme). Images were culled from I Can Haz Cheeseburger, Bing and ReactionGIFs.com and at the end of the study, some 738 of Amazon’s Mechanical Turks found Cahoots pretty useful. No word’s been given about the system actually reaching the public, so in the meantime you might want to start marathoning comedy specials on Netflix to bone up on your timing.

Shazam shows you the music artists are discovering
The ability to follow your favorite music artists on Shazam isn’t new, but that feature is now getting a huge boost. Starting today, the service will let you see how entertainers are using Shazam to discover tunes, too. Because famous people — they’re just like us. With the refreshed iOS and Android apps, you’ll start seeing the option to follow hundreds of artists, including Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull and Shakira, and view the music any of them are identifying through Shazam. Better yet, you can listen to these songs directly from the application. Don’t expect artists to make everything they try to recognize public, though, since there is an option to keep guilty pleasures (or blunders) private.
“What we learned is that artists themselves are discovering things with Shazam,” says Chief Product Officer Daniel Danker about the company’s new feature. “We wanted to turn this [feature] into an ongoing relationship between the user and the artist.” At launch, participating artists are only able to share music content with their followers. But Danker adds that, in the future, this functionality may expand to other Shazam-ready items — like books, movie posters, magazines and more.

So the story goes anyways. According to Mo Versi, who is the VP of Product Management for HTC, the Sprint variant of the HTC One M9 is on track and approved to receive Android 5.1 just in time for the long holiday weekend. Sprint hasn’t announced anything, nor have they updated the devices software update page, nor has HTC made a change to the Sprint software page, but Mo knows what is going on and hasn’t made a false update announcement before.
HTC One (M9) Sprint Owners! We have received technical approval on Lollipop OS 5.1 which includes camera improvements. OTA to start on 7/1!
— Mo Versi (@moversi) June 29, 2015
Like all other updates, you can expect it to roll out in waves with the first batch landing on July 1st. That could be as early as midnight ya know. You will want to make sure your device is charged well over 50%, you have a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time for the OTA to download and install.

Pokémon Shuffle was released on Nintendo 3DS earlier this year, a cute match-3 game that made surprisingly good use of its theme’s pedigree. It’s been announced that Pokémon Shuffle will be making the jump to mobile in the form of Pokémon Shuffle Mobile, and it will be out on Android (and iOS) sometime later this year. This makes it the second Pokémon announcement to come to Android this month alone after Pokémon Jukebox was announced just last week. To take a look at what the game is going to look like, check out the trailer released with the announcement today:
You can clearly see how this game used to be on 3DS, but Pokémon Shuffle Mobile looks to be suitably revamped for the mobile platforms. If you couldn’t guess from the trailer above, the gameplay will be a pseudo-battle like experience that will see you matching sets of Pokémon faces to deal damage to your target, with a chance to capture the Pokémon at the right time. Of course, you’ll be able to customize your team as well, though we’re hoping we don’t have to pay more just for that privilege.

HTC Desire Eye scheduled for Lollipop update with AT&T June 30th

The HTC Desire Eye was nothing short of an interesting device. Personally, I would have rather had that then an M8. It just seemed… cooler. I don’t know. All of you who did choose to pick one up are in for a special little treat tomorrow. According to HTC’s VP of Product Management, the HTC Desire Eye has received technical approval for Lollipop and it is set to roll out June 30th.
Great news for HTC Desire Eye AT&T owners! We’ve just received technical approval for Lollipop update! OTA to start tomorrow!
— Mo Versi (@moversi) June 30, 2015
He doesn’t mention which version of Lollipop will be coming though. I would love to assume that it is Android 5.1. However, it is safer to bet that it is Android 5.0 since that is what went out to international versions back in April. If you have the HTC Desire with AT&T be on the look out for an update to grace your device anytime around midnight and beyond. You will, as usual, want well over 50% battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time to kill for it to download and install.
If any users see it, be sure to share any details as to what version it is and additional features that get listed. I’ll check in with AT&T in the morning to see what they have to say on the subject.

Android 5.1 update now rolling out to Verizon Moto X (2nd gen)

HTC is not the only one bringing Android 5.1 to its US carrier-specific devices. Motorola is also getting in on the action as Verizon announces the latest Moto X (2nd gen) software is ready to begin rolling out to smartphones across the USA.
This news comes only a few days after said device was starting to get Android 5.1 soak tests. It didn’t take Big Red and Motorola much longer to get it all worked out, obviously. This update takes the software to version 23.16.3, which brings forth a series of improvements that will definitely be welcomed by users across the USA. This is an important Lollipop update, after all – one we have all been waiting for.
Without further ado, let’s tell you what this OTA update brings to the table.

Improvements
Android 5.1 offers some great interface modifications. For starters, the volume settings icons have been replaced with ones that better match those in the notification area. Added pull-down controls for WiFi and Bluetooth connections have also been added.
In addition, Interruption controls have now been integrated, allowing users to easily modify notifications for specific contacts. Other improvements include notification volume controls and better factory reset protection. You can go ahead and read the documentation below to catch all the details.

Wrapping up
Sadly, people won’t exactly be getting everything they were hoping for. HD Voice and Voice Over LTE are a couple very requested features that didn’t make it to this software version, but they may come at a later date. For now, all users can do is wait around and see when the update shows up.
This documentation is not exactly proof the update is rolling out as we speak, but it usually takes very little time for Verizon to release these updates after they publish them. Do keep in mind these roll out periodically, too, so not everyone will get the upgrade as soon as it is released. Try not to smash the screen trying to check for updates every few seconds; the update will come!
Do hit the comments to let us know what you are thinking of this OTA update. Are you satisfied? Where you hoping for more? Also, have any of you actually gotten the update yet?

Apple Retail Announces 2015 Interactive Summer Camps for Kids
Apple has opened registration for its annual Apple Camp three-day workshops where kids aged 8 to 12 can visit a retail store and learn how to make movies or create interactive books using software such as GarageBand, iBooks Author and iMovie on iPad and Mac. This year’s two free workshops are called “Stories in Motion with iMovie” and “Interactive Storytelling with iBooks.”

Apple’s summer workshops will be hosted between 11 AM and 12:30 PM local time, on various dates from July 20 to August 7, in the United States, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Parents are recommended to sign up early since space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Stories in Motion with iMovie” teaches kids how to create their own movies, ranging from storyboarding ideas and shooting video to creating an original soundtrack in GarageBand on an iPad and editing in iMovie on a Mac. “Interactive Storytelling with iBooks” shows kids how to create their own interactive books by drawing illustrations on an iPad and adding sound effects and Multi-Touch features using iBooks Author.
Apple notes that children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of each workshop.
