New image compares HTC One M9 with HTC One M9 Plus

htc_one_m9_one_m9_plus_mockup

Earlier today we say a posting from Twitter account @OnLeaks describing the dimensions of the HTC One M9 Plus, a smartphone that everyone is trying to figure out whether it is going to come to market or not. @OnLeaks has indicated since then that he was able to view a prototype of the HTC One M9 Plus and based on that, he created a mock up showing the device next to the HTC One M9.

As the image reveals, besides the difference in dimensions, the biggest difference is the presence of a button on the front of the HTC One M9 Plus. The lead candidate for that button, that first surfaced in an image back in January, is that it is actually a fingerprint sensor. Whether it serves some other dual purpose, like being a home button or a power button, is unclear.

Apple provides businesses with free Apple Pay window and register decals

Apple has updated its Apple Pay website today with a section that allows businesses to order Apple Pay kits that include decals for placement on store windows and registers.

The kits include both glass and register decals in two sizes and an application tool. Overall, the ordering process is pretty simple, with businesses being able to order up to 5 kits free of charge after filling out a short form. If more than five kits are needed, Apple asks that businesses call a support number provided on the page.

In addition, the ordering page offers up images of suggested placement for the decals that lines up with a merchant FAQ published earlier this month that directs businesses to display the Apple Pay acceptance mark in a prominent place.

If you’re a merchant looking to order one of the kits, you can check out more from Apple at the source link below.

Apple Now Providing Apple Pay Window and Register Decals to Businesses [iOS Blog]

Apple today updated a section of its Apple Pay website aimed at businesses with a new link that allows them to order Apple Pay decals for retail stores. The new decals accompany a set of Apple Pay graphics for merchants that were added to the site a few weeks back.

Clicking the link to order decals takes merchants to a new Apple Pay Supplies website where they can sign up to receive an Apple Pay kit that contains window and register decals. In the kit, there are glass decals in two sizes, register decals in two sizes, and an application tool. Businesses can order up to five kits using the online tool, but larger decal orders require placing a phone call to Apple.

Kits are available at no cost after a company, name, email address, and shipping address are entered.

Apple is encouraging businesses of all sizes to adopt Apple Pay with its new logo kits, and it has a dedicated page for merchants who are interested in accepting the payment method. Apple Pay adoption by retailers has continued at a rapid pace, and in March, several new Apple Pay partners emerged, including GameStop, Marriott International, Jamba Juice, JetBlue, Office Max, Regal Cinemas, Walt Disney World, and more.

During Apple’s March 9 event, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that there are now more than 700,000 locations where Apple Pay is accepted, including vending machines. Later this year, Square will introduce a new Square reader with NFC connectivity that will expand Apple Pay availability to thousands of small business owners that use the iPhone-based payment system.

Schmidt weighs in on Google Glass

google_eric_schmidt_2015

Ever since Google announced they were shutting down the Explorer program for Google Glass earlier this year, there has been lots of speculation as to whether the wearable device was dead or not. Many people believe the shuttering of the old beta program was a sign that Google’s experiment had failed. However, others noted that Google had moved it to another part of the company, Tony Faddell’s Nest division, a sign that it would eventually re-emerge, probably with a more consumer-ready focus. Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt has now weighed in and made a clear statement that Google is committed to the Glass platform.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Schmidt indicated that Faddell’s role is “to make it ready for users” likely based on feedback received during the beta testing of 2013 and 2014 through the Explorer program. Schmidt went on to say,

“It is a big and very fundamental platform for Google. We ended the Explorer program and the press conflated this into us canceling the whole project, which isn’t true. Google is about taking risks and there’s nothing about adjusting Glass that suggests we’re ending it.”

Schmidt suggested the media jumped the gun in claiming Glass was dead and failed to recognize that such a project is long term in nature and takes considerable time to get right. Some of those adjustments will likely include addressing issues like the cost, battery life, and improvements to the sound and display. The devices have also suffered from a foil issue that would need to be addressed. Unlike the Explorer beta program, the next phase of development may employ an in-house strategy similar to other companies.

New iOS 8.3 Features: Speaker Calls With Siri, No Password Required to Download Free Apps

The most recent iOS 8.3 beta was seeded to developers on March 12, but even though its been in the hands of testers for over a week, people are still discovering hidden features. Over the weekend, two new iOS 8.3 features were found, including an update to Siri and an update to app purchase settings.

With the iOS 8.3 beta 3 installed, users can now ask Siri to make phone calls using the iPhone’s speaker. If you ask Siri to “Call [name] on speaker,” the call will be made via speakerphone, enhancing Siri’s hands-free capabilities. If you make the same request in iOS 8.2, Siri ignores the “on speaker” part and places the call as normal.

hey_siri_speaker
The new feature makes it possible to activate Siri while plugged in by saying “Hey Siri” and make a phone call, all without needing to touch the phone or put on a headset for hands-free operation.

In the Settings menu of an iOS device running iOS 8.3 beta 3, there’s a new option under iTunes & App Store labeled “Password Settings.” In this section, there is an option to change the password settings for purchases and in-app purchases, choosing options to either “Always Require” a password when making a purchase, or to “Require After 15 Minutes.”

“Always Require” and “Require After 15 Minutes” are not new settings — the options have previously been located within the Restrictions section of the Settings app — but a user is required to select one in order to access a new password toggle setting, which lets users toggle the password requirement for free apps on and off. When toggled on, downloads labeled as “GET” in the App Store will not require a password.

Apple’s new Password Settings are not functional right now, returning a “Cannot connect to iTunes Store” message when tapped, but it’s likely they will be made available in a later beta ahead of the update’s public release. The Password Settings menu can also be found under General –> Restrictions.

In addition to the newly discovered features listed above, iOS 8.3 adds quite a bit of new functionality to Apple’s mobile operating system. Earlier betas have introduced a wireless CarPlay feature and several emoji changes, like a new emoji picker, diversified emoji with skin tone modifiers, new flags, and new icons for the watch, phone, and computer emoji, which now resemble an Apple Watch, an iPhone, and an iMac. Most notably, keyboard spacing has been changed to prevent users from hitting the period key when they meant to hit the space key when searching in Safari.

There’s also support for Google two-factor authentication when adding Google accounts on iOS, Apple Pay support for China UnionPay, new Siri languages, filtering options for Messages, and more. We’ve been keeping a complete list of iOS 8.3 changes in our iOS 8 Features Roundup.

Google made an ‘Ebola-proof’ tablet to help combat high-risk diseases

ebolatabletuser3240006b-single-use-only

To help the brave men and women who are continuously fighting against Ebola in Sierra Leone, Google has created an ‘Ebola-proof’ tablet for collecting patient data. The tablet, which is based off of a Sony Xperia tablet, features an extra layer of protection that will allow workers to soak the tablet in chlorine for decontamination. The tablet’s sharp edges have been removed to prevent piercing the doctors’ protective clothing, and can be charged wirelessly to minimize openings on the tablet.

ebolatablet3240007b-single-use-only

Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, requested Google make a tablet that could withstand storms and high humidity that are usually found in the Ebola zone (West Africa). Doctors fighting against the virus, until now, have struggled to transfer patient data between one another. In fact, a Médecins Sans Frontières doctor was forced to shout patient details over a fence from inside the protective zone where medics need to be fully covered to avoid catching the disease. Even passing a pen and paper through the protective zone could transfer the disease, so it’s obvious that this new tablet will undoubtedly come in handy.

So far, the tablet is only being used in Sierra Leone, but it could easily be used in regions of the world where other deadly diseases lie. Google is working with Médecins Sans Frontières to open source the project, which will make it much easier for the tablet to come in handy elsewhere.

Latest video demonstrates Android Wear’s ability to control iOS music

iOS_Music_Controls_Android_Wear_01

Developer Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh has been making quite the buzz lately with his work on pairing Android Wear with iOS. In his first video, he showed the Moto 360 receiving notifications after pairing it with an iPhone. Then in his second video, he showed that you can answer phone calls using Android Wear.

Now in his third video, he demonstrates that Android Wear’s native music controls can control music being played on the iPhone.

This is all pretty cool, but I am not sure that many iOS users would jump on the Android Wear bandwagon instead of the Apple Watch, but it’s nice to have the option. Check out the video below and let us know what you think.
