Root method for the Droid Turbo released for $20

verizon_motorola_droid_turbo_blue_ballistic_nylonA root method has finally been released for Motorola’s Droid Turbo, with a small catch. The program costs $20 per phone you plan on rooting, which is pretty rare to see with root methods on Android devices.

The root tool was developed by maiko1 on XDA and allows you to flash any system image to your Droid Turbo, included pre-rooted system images. It won’t disable write protection, but if all you’re looking for is a simple root method to use some of your favorite root apps, this should do the trick.

Whenever you start dealing with rooting devices, you run the risk of doing some permanent damage that won’t be covered by the manufacturer warranty. If you’re still interested, hit the links below to get started.

Tips for taking good panorama shots on Android

A wide, sweeping shot can do wonders for perspective. But panoramas also can take a little practice. Here are a few tips.

A big part of the fun that is Android photography is being able to more than your typical point-and-shoot camera. It’s a camera lens strapped to a computer, after all. And one of the easiest (and coolest) shots to shot is a panorama.

For the uninitiated (we know you’re out there — it’s OK), a panorama really is a series of images stitched together to form a single wide-angle shot. It’s generally found as an option in your camera application, and you take a panorama by moving your phone so that it’s able to capture much more than just a single field of view. Panoramas are fun, but they can take a little bit of practice.

Here are a few tips for getting the best panorama shots you can.

3rd generation Motorola Moto X in the works for late summer release

motorola_rick_osterloh_askricko

Amidst all of the excitement about the springtime releases of flagship smartphones, Motorola has revealed that the next generation of their top-tier Motorola Moto X device should be coming out in late summer, probably August or September. This timeline was revealed by Motorola President Rick Osterloh in a response on Twitter to a question about the time-frame for release of the next Moto X. Osterloh indicated Motorola tries to “stay on a roughly annual cycle” for product releases.

The next Moto X is expected to come equipped with a Snapdragon 810 processor. True to previous efforts to distinguish their devices on more than just hardware, the next Moto X is expected to be “smarter than any other smartphone.” During the most recent round of #AskRickO questions on Twitter, Osterloh also revealed that Motorola does not have any current plans to do a smaller screen on their next device, although he seemed to get the message that there are users out there looking for a quality device in the sub 5-inch range.

Verizon’s HTC One M9 pre-orders begin April 1st, available in-store April 10th

htc one m9 review aa (3 of 34)

Verizon has just announced that pre-orders for the HTC One M9 will begin Wednesday, April 1st, and the device will be available in-store on Friday, April 10th. If you’d like to pick one up on a two-year contract, the device will be available for $199.99 in both Gold on Silver and Metal Gray 32GB variants. For those who’d like to take advantage of Verizon’s Edge program, the device will cost you $24.99 per month for 24 months. The carrier has also revealed that the One M9 Dot View case would be available on April 1st for $49.99 in Onyx Black and Candy Floss color options.

While the HTC One M9 doesn’t differ from the M8 as much as some would have liked it to, it’s still one heck of a great smartphone. The One M9 sports a 5-inch full HD display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage with microSD expansion up to 128GB. It has a non-removable 2840mAh battery, loud and clear front-facing BoomSound speakers and a beautiful all-metal construction. The 20MP rear-facing camera could definitely use some work, but if the camera quality on your smartphone isn’t important to you, we think you’ll like the M9 quite a bit. To learn more about this device, check out our full HTC One M9 review.

Poll: Do you need official apps so long as there are good third-party ones?

Earlier this week I wrote about how it’d been a full year since Instagram updated its official Windows Phone app and what we, the Windows Phone users could do about it if we were unhappy. Our advice was to use something like 6Tag, an excellent third-party solution but some of the comments on the post raised an interesting question. A question we’re going to put to you, the Windows Central audience.

Do we really need official apps as long as there are good quality, third-party solutions available in the store?

Check out dbrand’s Galaxy S6 and One M9 skins including wood and leather

New reviews, carrier pricing and pre-order dates are all the hype today as we get closer to HTC and Samsung’s new phones. Feeling a bit crafty? Check out dbrand’s upcoming skins for the Galaxy S6 and One M9, which include 5 different colors, mahogany wood, white or black leather, different shades of metal, matte white or black and multiple carbon fiber options.

All of these options look quite tempting. While the Gorilla Glass back of the S6 and all-aluminum back of the One M9 look fantastic already, I personally have my eyes on a black faux leather alternative…

Do you plan on buying a case or skin for either of these devices? If so, we’d love to hear which!

Drupe lets you contact your friends with just two swipes of your finger

With the growing number of social networks, messaging apps, and video chatting applications in the Google Play Store, sometimes keeping track of all of them can be daunting. Usually, to message someone on Facebook, you’ll need to open the Facebook application, click on the Messages tab, type in your friend’s name, then start typing your message. drupe, a new app in the Play Store, aims to streamline this process.

drupe is an app that constantly floats on your screen so you can take advantage of it anytime you’d like. Once you swipe over the four “drupe dots”, the app will open and will show you a list of frequently contacted friends on the left side and your most used social networks/messaging apps on the right. So instead of navigating to an application and typing in your friend’s name to get in contact, all you need to do is open drupe, select the friend you’d like to contact and drag their image over to the app you’d like to use.

One of the more interesting aspects of the app is that it supports a few misfits like Google Maps navigation and calendar shortcuts. So if you forgot how to get to your friends house or want to schedule a calendar entry with your friend, drupe makes that easy.

You can rotate your contacts view between recently contacted and favorites, and you can change which order your apps are displayed on the right. If you can’t find a contact on your list, just click the search bar on the bottom of your screen. And probably the most overlooked feature of this app is just using it for launching apps more quickly. Once you launch drupe, click on an application and you’ll be thrown right into it.

drupe certainly has the right idea. It’s incredibly smooth, convenient and customizable. If you’re interested in trying it out for yourself, drupe can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store.
