Acer’s new Windows Phone is low budget but not without charm
It’s been some time since we’ve talked about Acer in the context of Windows Phone. But, it’s back in the game with the Liquid M220, the company’s first Windows Phone 8.1 device just announced at Mobile World Congress. It’s a budget phone, costing just 79 Euros when it goes on sale in April in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region. It’ll be competing directly with the likes of the Microsoft Lumia 435 in the market, and while it’s low budget when it comes to the hardware, it does have some charm.
HTC’s One M9 Product Listing goes live at Best Buy with $649 price tag
HTC might be having its official announcement at MWC 2015 later this afternoon, but that hasn’t stopped Best Buy from jumping the gun by letting its product page for the HTC One M9 go live. If you’ve followed the leaks at all, you already know all about the One M9. Previous leaks have seen the HTC One M9 appearing in promotional pictures and videos as well as suffering the indignity of being compared to its predecessors by a member of the press with early access.
As you can see from the image above, Best Buy have priced the AT&T variant of the HTC One M9 at $649. Here’s a brief rundown of what you would be getting for your money.
- Android 5.0 Lollipop
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor
- 3GB of RAM
- 5-inch Super LCD3 display with 1920 x 1080 resolution
- 32GB internal storage
- MicroSD card slot
- 20MP rear-facing camera/4MP front-facing camera
- 4G compatibility
- 20 days standby time

HTC One M9 shows up on the BestBuy website with full specs
With only a few hours left until the official unveiling of the HTC One M9 at Mobile World Congress 2015, it seems that BestBuy jumped the gun a little and have let the M9 product page go live early.
It’s a listing for the AT&T variant of the device with 32GB of storage priced at $649.99.
As well as the price, the page lists the specs of the device as a Snapdragon 810, 3GB of RAM, 4G LTE, a 5-inch 1080p Super LCD3 screen, and MicroSD slot.
Interesting, BestBuy lists the front camera as 20-Megapixel and the rear camera as 4-Megapixel, but they’ve probably just got their front and back mixed up.
Despite everything seemingly already known for the HTC One M9, perhaps HTC may still have a surprise up their sleeve for us?

Acer wants to sell you a touchscreen fitness tracker for less than $90
This is Acer’s latest play for your wrist, the Liquid Leap+. It takes the form of a fairly basic fitness tracker that also pulls notifications from your smartphone. Aesthetically it’s a continuation of what Acer offered with the original Liquid Leap, meaning it’s very similar to Garmin, Microsoft and Samsung’s fitness trackers.
The Liquid Leap+ communicates over low-energy Bluetooth 4.0, is IPX7-certified water resistant and comes in a variety of colors. It promises to track your activity and sleep, and will also convert that data to approximate your daily calorie burn. It’s got a one-inch OLED touchscreen (there are no physical buttons here) that lets you define what activity you’re currently partaking in or swipe through notifications, and other tricks include music control and compatibility with iOS, Android and Windows Phone (including Acer’s new Liquid M220).
The Liquid Leap+ will go on sale later this month in Europe, the Middle East and Africa at €79 ($88). Is Acer doing anything dramatically different with its wearable? Not really, but that’s a very competitive price when compared to the Fitbit Flex and other similar trackers, which may persuade those that want a capable fitness tracker without shelling out hundreds of dollars to come around to Acer’s way of thinking. We’ll get some face time with the Liquid Leap+ at Mobile World Congress this week, so stay tuned for some first-hand impressions.
Acer’s new Windows Phone is unlikely to blow you away
For some time now, consumers have pretty much been stuck choosing between Lumias for their Windows Phone fix. Acer is aiming to change that with the launch of its catchily named “Liquid M220″ smartphone. The M220 is a decidedly low-end handset, with a 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800 pixels) display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage (upgradable via microSD), 5-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facing shooter. It’s clearly aiming to compete with Microsoft’s cheapest Lumias, and, although admittedly this comes down to taste, it’s not exactly a looker compared to its rivals.
Things get worse for Acer when you consider the price. At €79 ($88) it’s up against the Lumia 535, which has double the RAM and internal storage. Interestingly, although the M220 has only 512MB of RAM, Acer is promising it’ll be upgradeable to Windows 10. Microsoft has noted that squeezing all the features of Windows 10 onto such low-end devices may not be possible, so bear in mind when deciding on your next phone that, despite the upgrade promise, not all Windows 10 phones will be equal. The M220 will go on sale in Europe, the Middle East and Africa this April.

New Android Wear Watch Face: IO 2015 is inspired by Google’s Material Design
One of the great things about Android is that we can customise our home screens to our heart’s content, and Google’s Android Wear platform is no different. There is a myriad of different watch faces available for download, and IO 2015 is one of the newest to hit the Play Store.
IO 2015 was created by Chanh Le, and as the name implies, inspired by the upcoming Google IO 2015. The watch face is pretty functional while still being a little funky. IO 2015 is compatible with all Android Wear smart watches, and naturally does not work with Samsung Gear or other smart watches that use different operating systems. Your smartphone also needs to be running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and up.
Features
- Cool number animation
- Multiple colour customisation features
- Works for round and square watches
- Dimmed mode
Imagine how great this would look on the Huawei Android Wear smart watch that appeared in two official videos a few hours ago. Don’t forget that Huawei is scheduled to make an announcement later today at MWC 2015 and that you can follow all our Mobile World Congress news here.

Acer is officially back in the Windows Phone game. Announced this morning at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the Liquid M220 is the Taiwanese manufacturers very first Windows Phone 8.1 device. Better still, alongside introducing the device, Acer is announcing it’s commitment to upgrading it to Windows 10 down the line.
The phone is announced alongside the Liquid Leap+ smartband which is fully compatible with Windows Phone 8.1. The phone is targeted at the budget end of the market, and will be available in April in the EMEA region for just €79.
We’re live from Barcelona for Mobile World Congress 2015!
Greetings from Barcelona, Spain! We’re back in town for the annual Mobile World Congress. And to say that this year’s show is going to be insane wouldn’t get anywhere close to doing it justice.
But this year’s show is going to be insane. Trust us.
Coming up Sunday: We’ll be liveblogging the HTC event at 10 a.m. EST. And at 12:30 p.m. EST we’ll have Samsung’s Unpacked event.
And even as big as those two events are, they’re just a fraction of the news that’s going to drop. Just leave our Mobile World Congress page open for the next few days. You’re don’t want to miss a thing.
IKEA to integrate Qi charging in some furniture starting in April 2015
Everyone’s favorite build-your-own furniture store IKEA has just announced a partnership to start integrating Qi charging for devices into some of its furniture. Starting in April 2015, IKEA will offer bedside tables, lamps and desks with Qi charging built in, meaning you won’t need to drop any extra cables or charging bases to keep your phones topped up.
We’re live at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona!

It’s that time again: Our team has descended upon the heart of Barcelona to bring you another week of the latest the mobile world has to offer. As always, we’ll be shooting videos and liveblogging events until our fingers fall off, and we certainly hope you’ll come join us for the ride. So, what’s in store for us all this time around?
We’re glad you asked.
To no one’s surprise, HTC and Samsung have been working on a handful of leaky flagship phones, and they’re going to unveil them at a pair of back-to-back press this afternoon. You know what that means: Back-to-back liveblogs to bring you the news as soon as it breaks. One has to wonder if that’s all HTC’s bringing to Barça, considering the dull throb of rumors that keep suggesting there’s some sort of M9 phablet secretly lurking under wraps. Samsung’s eternal rival LG has already trotted out its newest smartphones ahead of the show (and we already reviewed the only one that’s really worth talking about), though we’re looking forward to slipping on the webOS wonder that is the G Watch Urbane LTE.
Meanwhile, Sony’s presence at the show has been scaled back as it tries to decide if smartphones are a part of its future at all, but it’s probably going to show up with at least a new tablet in tow. Microsoft is making an appearance tomorrow morning, too, so expect more clarity on Windows 10 for mobile and maybe a pair of mid-range smartphones for good measure. Then you’ve got Huawei, a company that can’t help but tout its surprisingly handsome Android Wear watch ahead of time, and BlackBerry, a company that’s reportedly planning to layout its roadmap for the entire year sometime this week.
Beyond all that, beyond the glitz and glamour of new gadgets from huge companies, are the little things. The quirky bits. The Bluetoothbrushes and smart suitcases and the GPS canes. In years past, stepping into the Fira de Barcelona has been like digging into a tiny slice of the future, and we’re going to spend the week helping you see as much of it as possible. Keep it locked to our MWC event page for all the news out of Catalonia as it breaks, and thanks –really — for joining us.
