T-Mobile Galaxy S6 and S6 edge receive 177MB OTA with bug fixes, performance improvements

When T-Mobile customers receive their recently-purchased Galaxy S6 and S6 edges, they’ll be in for an OTA update as soon as they start them up.

A heftily-sized 177MB update is hitting both phones on T-Mobile, with a very generic changelog listed indicating that there are bug fixes, performance improvements and potential feature enhancements. The software makes the jump to build number UVU1AOCG, but of course that doesn’t really matter as much as what’s actually been changed that users will notice.

Hands-on: Amzer Double Layer Hybrid Case for the HTC One M9

Good protection adds a kickstand to make better use of the screen and those speakers.

Here’s a quick look at the Amzer Hybrid Case for the HTC One M9. It’s got a soft silicone underlayer that fits up against your phone and protects the back, sides top and bottom while still giving full access to the ports and buttons. And on top of that goes a rigid plastic shell for the more serious protection.

AMC’s channels come to PlayStation Vue

The Walking Dead

If you were intrigued by PlayStation Vue as a substitute for cable TV but refused to sign up until you could watch The Walking Dead, it’s time to hop aboard. Sony has added AMC Networks to Vue’s channel roster, giving you AMC proper as well as IFC, Sundance and WEtv. Be prepared to pony up if you just have to catch Portlandia, though — while you’ll get AMC and WEtv in the base Access package, IFC and Sundance are only available if you’ve subscribed to Core or Elite. This certainly isn’t the best deal if you care about AMC or IFC above all else (Sling TV offers it as part of its $20 bundle), but it’ll make Vue a better value for your cord-cutting dollar.

Verizon starts pushing out Lollipop update for the Galaxy S5… Again!

galaxy-s5-samsung-sign

If you cast your mind back to early February, you may remember that Verizon claimed that it was rolling out the much-anticipated Lollipop update for the Galaxy S5. However, it appears the carrier pulled the original upgrade (version number: G900VVRU1BNLC ) with no reason given, and has today started pushing out an identical build of Android 5.0 to the handset, with this new version number: G900VVRU1BOA4.

The two versions seem to be exactly the same, both bringing support for multiple accounts, improved notifications, a smoother multitasking experience, Ambient Display, smarter internet connections and the recently-announced Material Design guidelines.

To start the update, make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network. Then, from the home screen, press the Menu key, followed by Settings. Scroll to the bottom and tap ‘About Device’, followed by ‘Software Update and ‘Update Now’.

Episode Duscae holds promise for Final Fantasy XV, but there’s a lot of room for improvement

I’ve finished the demo build of Final Fantasy XV, which Square Enix have dubbed “Episode Duscae”. As a long time Final Fantasy fan I’m optimistic about the franchise for the first time in a long time.

Square Enix have been soliciting player feedback on the demo, which was bundled with Final Fantasy Type-0 for PS4 and Xbox One. Here are my gameplay impressions, gripes, and pleas to Square Enix for Final Fantasy XV moving forward.

The HTC One M9+ has its design showcased in latest leak

m9-plus-leak

Renowned leaker @Upleaks has posted a couple of press renders clearly showing the design of the much-anticipated upscaled variant of HTC’s flagship smartphone of 2015, the One M9.

As can be seen in the image above, the design of the M9+’s chassis is extremely similar to the standard One M9, with only a few minor alterations. One being a second UltraPixel camera on the back of the device. Another, a fingerprint scanner beneath the screen on the front.

If recent speculation is anything to go by, the One M9+ is set to pack a 5.2-inch Quad HD display, a high-end octa-core Mediatek CPU, 3GB of RAM, a 20-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter and a 2,840 mAh non-removable battery.

As with all leaks and rumors, we have to take the alleged design and specifications with a large pinch of salt until HTC provides us with some solid evidence regarding what it has in store for its next flagship phablet, but thankfully we don’t have to wait too much longer until we find out as the Taiwanese company has a press event scheduled for April 8.

How to fix the headphone jack in your iPhone: The ultimate guide

So your out of warranty iPhone has a busted headphone jack. If you’d rather fix it on your own instead of buying a new iPhone, you’ve come to the right place.

The symptoms of a broken headphone jack are similar in all models, and can include audio cutting in and out or no audio at all. In some cases, loud speaker audio won’t work because your iPhone thinks headphones are plugged in when they’re really not.

If any of these issues sound like something you’ve experienced, we’ll walk you step by step through the repair process. We’ll also link you to all the parts and tools you’ll need to get the job done right the first time. The difficulty of a headphone jack replacement will depend on the iPhone model, but if you’re up for the challenge, follow along, find your model, and let’s get started!

iPhone 5s

An iPhone 5s headphone jack replacement is very similar to both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c. It’s part of the dock assembly and comes out all as one piece. The only extra challenge you’ll experience during this repair is making sure you don’t damage Touch ID when you open your iPhone 5s and disconnect it from the dock assembly. As long as you keep an eye out for those little things, you’ll be just fine.

iPhone 5c

The iPhone 5c is essentially an iPhone 5 with a plastic, more colorful shell. There are some internal differences you’ll have to watch out for, which makes this repair slightly different. Regardless, a headphone jack replacement in an iPhone 5c is fairly straightforward and will only take about 30 to 45 minutes of your time. It’s also a heck of a lot cheaper than a new iPhone.

iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 re-located the headphone jack from the top of the iPhone all the way to the bottom. That means the repair is quite a bit different than the models that came before it. Don’t worry, that’s a good thing. The headphone jack in the iPhone 5 is part of the dock assembly, which is much easier to get to and replace than previous generations. It’ll also resolve any issues you may be having with charging or connecting to iTunes as well.

iPhone 4s

The iPhone 4s headphone jack is on the same cable that controls the mute switch. So to fix a broken headphone jack, you’ll have to replace the entire cable. This repair is slightly intricate but not terribly difficult for anyone with moderate to intermediate DIY skills. Just take your time and be sure not to tear any cables during the process.

iPhone 4

The headphone jack in the GSM iPhone 4 is part of the volume and mute switch cable, making it slightly different than the iPhone 4s. This is a slightly intricate repair and you’ll have to take care not to snag or tear any cables. I’d recommend attempting it only if your DIY skills are moderate to intermediate. And as long as you take your time and don’t rush, you’ll get through just fine.

Remember the iPhone 4 came in two varieties, GSM and CDMA. What carrier you have will determine which guide you need to follow. The internals are different. If your iPhone 4 contains a SIM slot on the side, you want the GSM guide. If it does not (meaning you have Verizon), use the CDMA guide instead.

Where’s the flashlight app on the Galaxy S6?

A dedicated “flashlight” app is gone on the Galaxy S6, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t easy to access that function on your phone.

Our phones are most often the easiest way to quickly deploy a flashlight in dark situations, and the Galaxy S6 will let you quickly light up its camera flash to provide that with a simple tap. Rather than use a dedicated flashlight app or a key command, you can use a quick launch icon in the notification shade to do the job.

ifo Apple Store shuts down after 14 years

Back in 2001, Apple’s retail store initiative was new, and one web site tracked every move Apple made.

Now that web site is winding down. A hearty farewell to Gary Allen, who for almost the last decade and a half has reported on Apple’s retail store machinations on his ifo Apple Store blog.

On Friday Allen posted a blog entry entitled My Work Here is Done, declaring “a happy ending” to his blog.

Back in 2001, It seemed like I was the only person studying the stores. In fact, most onlookers were skeptical of the stores’ future success.

more recently, interest in Apple retail has expanded to financial analysts, designers, architects and other special interests

Now, everyone is interested in the Apple stores—and most of them also seem to be writing about the stores. Who am I to keep up with them?

Allen’s done some great work tracking Apple’s progress with its retail stores, which now rank as one of the great retail success stories of the 21st century. Apple’s retail arm is incredibly popular and influential and continues to grow.

Allen says he’ll continue to update the site with “list-type material” but plans to just write for fun instead of keeping up new content all the time.
