Microsoft may be headed for daily releases of the Windows 10 preview

It looks like Microsoft is about to hit the gas pedal on Windows 10 preview releases. Yesterday, plans about updates were discussed in detail on the Windows blog, but it now looks like Microsoft is considering adjusting the speed/risk balance of the Fast ring, with increased updates.

Loading up the Insider Hub for Windows 10, a message notes that “Flights are getting faster” and that if you are not ready for “daily builds” of Windows 10, you may want to head to the Slow ring level instead. This change does affect Windows Phone and desktop OS builds for the Windows 10 preview.

However, the information was reportedly posted in error and premature.

NCAA March Madness Live app to stream all 67 games online

ncaa_march_madnes_tv_partners_logo

From the end of March through the beginning of April, college basketball dominates television in the United States. Sports fans, even if they do not follow a specific college basketball program, tune-in to witness March Madness. With so many games taking place at odd times, there is a very good chance viewers will not have access to a television. That is where NCAA March Madness Live comes in.

The service, which operates on the web and on mobile devices, allows fans to stream each and every one of the sixty-seven games that comprise the tournament. It goes beyond streaming games as well by including team, statistics, brackets, and scores sections.

The NCAA March Madness Live service will be available on all major digital platforms starting March 12. A pay-TV subscription is required for full access to the service while limited access will be given to anyone. The games airing on TBS, truTV, and TNT will require registration (because they are cable networks) and those on CBS can be streamed without any credentials required.

Twitter profiles on Android look much better now

Twitter’s mobile app has seen a fair bit of newness as of late, and its latest tweak brings the Android version’s profile pages in line with iOS’. What’s so different? Let’s start at the top. Header images and avatar photos have gotten a bump in size for starters, and, what’s more, the bio has its own bit of screen real-estate now instead of being a swipe to the left. Rather than only the three most recent tweets showing, now you can scroll through an infinite amount of a user’s 140-character updates too — same goes for photos and favorites.

Thankfully, this has streamlined profiles a ton and eliminates the need for lots of tapping to navigate. You can swipe right or left anywhere on your device’s display, for example, to move from tweets to photos to favorites, respectively, while the bio, avatar and header stay static. The simplicity is quite refreshing, to be honest. Compared to how the timeline itself has evolved (for better and for worse), it’d be surprising if this ruffles users’ feathers the way incessant ads for a certain mobile game has.

Nova Launcher receives huge Material Design overhaul and much more in latest beta

Nova 1

When talking about third party launchers on Android, one of the best out there is Nova Launcher. The application is constantly getting tweaks and new little improvements to make your Android experience even better. And if you’re a member of the Nova Launcher beta community on Google+, you should be receiving quite the update today. The developer has just pushed out a huge redesign to the beta channel, bringing tons of Material Design aesthetic changes, new animations, some under the hood changes, and much, much more. Without any further ado, let’s dive right in.

First up is the Material Design overhaul, which shows its biggest changes in the menus and settings panels. All menus feature an off-white background and red accents. Aside from the menus, long-pressing on a home screen will allow you to choose wallpapers, widgets and Google settings, just like in Android 5.0 Lollipop. The application drawer now also has a search bar, which can be accessed by pulling down anywhere in the drawer.

If you don’t want to sign up for the beta channel, don’t worry. All of these changes will eventually make their way to the stable version, though it may take a few weeks to do so. To sign up for the beta channel, you need to join the Google+ community here, then head to this link to become a tester. After that, head to this Google Play Store link to update to the most recent beta version. Once you click “become a tester”, it may take a few minutes for your update to roll out through the Play Store.

High Apple Store Traffic Distorting Mall Rent, Lifting Mall Sales [Mac Blog]

Apple Stores’ ability to generate a high rate of foot traffic in malls is allowing Apple to win “sweetheart deals” from mall operators while increasing mall sales 10%, according to a new Wall Street Journal report.

valleyfair_hero_2x

Apple draws so many shoppers that its stores single-handedly lift sales by 10% at the malls in which they operate, according to Green Street Advisors, a real-estate research firm. That gives Apple the clout to negotiate extremely low rents for itself relative to its sales, while creating upward pressure on prices paid by mall neighbors who might not benefit from the traffic.

Mall operators usually strike deals with department stores that allow them to pay low common area fees and almost no rent in exchange for drawing traffic to the mall. Smaller non-department stores generate most of the rental fees collected by mall landlords, paying as much as 15% of their sales a square foot in rent.

Because Apple Stores bring in so much traffic that leads to increased sales in other parts of the mall, Apple has been able to win rental agreements that see it paying as little as 2% of its sales a square foot. Typically, rents paid to mall operators are based on how much the retailer expects to sell, which is influenced by overall mall traffic.

Average-grossing Apple Stores can garner $6,000 in sales a square foot, while higher grossing Apple Stores net $10,000 in sales a square foot, sources tell the WSJ. At 45 enclosed malls, Apple’s share of gross sales averaged 14% in 2013, up just over 10% from 2002.

While Apple’s success in retail affords it sweetheart deals, it also gains breaks in other forms of payment to mall landlords. For example, some landlords require tenants to pay additional rent if sales exceed a certain trigger. Apple doesn’t have to pay that additional rent, while its neighbors do.

Additionally, because of Apple’s influence on mall traffic, retailers have begun asking mall landlords to exclude Apple as an example at the negotiating table, largely because its success is an extreme case compared to other non-department store mall retailers.
