Yahoo wants you to forget your password, announces ‘on-demand’ login service

Yahoo’s new “on-demand” system will tie your phone number with your Yahoo account, sending you a one-time verification key to your iPhone every time you want to login.

Yahoo has announced its take on password security with a service that removes the password altogether. With its on-demand service, the software giant will deliver a one-time key every time a user needs to log in to their account, with a “send my password” button displayed instead of the password text box.

Yahoo has detailed instructions on how you can enable the service, which is now available to customers in the U.S.:

1) Sign in to your Yahoo.com account.

2) Click on your name at the top right corner to go to your account information page.

3) Select “Security” in the left bar.

4) Click on the slider for “On-demand passwords” to opt-in.

5) Enter your phone number and Yahoo will send you a verification code.

6) Enter the code and voila!

Yahoo isn’t the only tech company looking to simplify the account sign-in process, with Twitter also launching a Digits service that allows users to log in to their accounts via a unique code sent to the phone number associated with their accounts.

Along with on-demand passwords, Yahoo showcased an end-to-end encryption plugin for Yahoo Mail developed in collaboration with Google:

Yahoo’s method is geared at being more user-friendly, and while the encryption service is not yet available to users, the company plans to launch it sometime before the end of the year.

CyanogenMod Raises $110 Million—No Microsoft Necessary

Microsoft is desperately trying to break into the mobile world of technology, and while its Windows Phones may be capable devices, they certainly aren’t popular. The Washington state-based company has diversified and has now started pushing for its apps to at least be available and desirable to potential customers using other mobile platforms. Google has been accused of being unyielding towards any outside programs by Microsoft being used in the operating system, which is why Microsoft was trying to strike a deal with CyanogenMod.

As it turns out, the deal didn’t go so well, at least not for Microsoft. Despite missing out on money from one of the largest tech companies in the world, CyanogenMod still managed to raise $110 Million. The cash eventually came from Benchmark, Andreessen Horowitz, and Redpoint Venture, amongst other sources. Due to the influx of cash and the investments made in the company by these venture capital firms, Cyanogen could be valued at over $500 million, which is fantastic for the startup, especially considering how far it has come in such a short time.

In the coming months, it will be exciting to see what Cyanogen does with its new capital, how Microsoft goes about getting its software on other devices, and whether or not they will try to give it another go in an investing deal.

Google Considering Ingress Convention this Year

The future of gaming, it seems, is not going to be in the next console or on the next big tablet—it will be in our physical world. At least, it will be partially in our world, existing in an augmented reality. That’s what Google had planned when it started Ingress, a sci-fi game played with real-world landmarks. The game has grown to be hugely popular in its two short years of existence, having already amassed over 10 million downloads. The regular meetups to play the game routinely draw thousands of people—sometimes up to 5,000!

Due to its huge popularity, and the nature of the game, Google’s Niantic Labs head, John Hanke, mentioned the possibility of a large-scale, convention-style meetup for players to attend. He gave no real concrete details, and kept quiet when pressed with questions, but the very fact that he brought it up is promising for all of the Ingress diehards in the world. If you’re hoping the convention will definitely happen, don’t worry: you’re not alone, so keep checking back on TalkAndroid for more information as it happens.

Lawsuit accuses Lyft of stiffing new drivers on bonuses

Lyft car at night

Uber isn’t the only ridesharing outfit running into legal trouble these days — Lyft is now facing a lawsuit over claims that it deprived new drivers of promised bonuses. The transportation company allegedly committed fraud by offering $1,000 to drivers who completed their first ride by March 5th, only to renege for many of them because it couldn’t finish background checks on time. Lyft isn’t offering a formal response to the suit just yet, but the company tells the AP that thousands of would-be drivers made it under the wire. However, lawyers maintain that hundreds of others didn’t — there could be at least $5 million up for grabs, according to the attorneys. It’s too soon to declare a victor, but it won’t be shocking if the pink mustache company is more cautious about handing out cash in the future.

LG G4 to Sport 5.6-inch Screen

The LG G3 was widely regarded as one of the all-around best phone of 2014, but the Korean tech giant can’t live off of last years success in 2015. The LG G4, which is due out in May, will hopefully be an improvement over the current aging model, with all of the neat specs of 2015, and the handy features we’ve come to know and love from LG. The device will also increase in size, according to an online twitter tipster named @OnLeaks. The screen will be 5.6 inches, which puts it smack-dab in between the LG G3 and the Note 4, but still in phone territory.

As far as phablets go, although the G4 is pushing the limits of flagship phones’ sizes, LG apparently may have even bigger plans for the second half of the year with a genuine phablet of around 5.8 inches, coupled with its own stylus.

Google Now will soon show info from any app

Google Now on Android

Google Now only displays useful tidbits of knowledge from a handful of your apps right now, but the flood gates are about to fling wide open. Project director Aparna Chennapragada has revealed that Google plans to release a developer kit that lets any of your apps put their data into Now, not just those with special access. It’s not clear exactly when this will turn up, but Chennapragada suggests that there shouldn’t be collisions between competing software — your app usage habits will determine which cards appear. While that may be a tad optimistic (it’s easy to see two social networks vying for your attention), there’s a good chance that Google Now will become a one-stop shop for things you need to know.
