Samsung said to be working on custom CPU cores
Samsung already produces the Exynos chipsets for its flagships like the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. A new report is now claiming that the company will soon start making its own CPU cores as well, thus reducing its dependency on current producer ARM.
As it stands, the likes of Samsung, Qualcomm and MediaTek are capable of designing their own chipsets, but still have to rely on ARM CPU cores. Developing their own CPU cores will certainly make lives a lot easier for Samsung, while also increasing revenue at the same time.
This is merely a report at this point, so there’s no word from the company to prove its authenticity, although it is said that the SoC will break cover by next year with samples said to be ready by the first quarter of 2016.
It’s unlikely that the new CPU will be shown off in any devices next year, but don’t be surprised to find it running on the Galaxy S7 flagship.

Airlines Embrace Apple Watch With Upcoming Apps
At its Apple Watch event on March 9, Apple highlighted several apps that will be available on the Apple Watch, including an app from American Airlines, which will let users receive flight information, check in for their flights, and more.

Since then, several other airlines have also announced upcoming apps for the Apple Watch, giving us a hint at some of the ways the Apple Watch will be used to make our lives easier. British Airways, for example, has just announced a British Airways app for the Apple Watch, which will be available beginning on April 24.
Through a glance option, which is accessed by swiping right on the watch face, the British Airways app will display a summary of a customer’s next flight, offering details like flight number, flight status, a countdown to departure time, and the weather at the destination. All of that information will be available at a single glance, preventing users from needing to rifle through emails and open up apps to access flight details.
The app will also support on-wrist check-ins for flights, and it will deliver notifications to direct users to their appropriate gates. At certain airport terminals, such as Heathrow’s Terminal 5, users will receive welcome messages powered by iBeacon.

British Airways’ Apple Watch app
Earlier this week, VentureBeat asked several airlines about their plans for Apple Watch apps, which yielded information about two upcoming apps from Delta and United. The Delta app that’s in development will deliver notifications about flights to users ahead of their flights, and it will give them access to the boarding pass stored on their iPhones.
Like the apps from other airlines, it will offer flight numbers, gate numbers, flight times, and other info. If a flight gets changed, for example, users will get a notification on their Apple Watch. There will also be a notification when a flight is approaching a destination city, with information about luggage pickup.

United Airlines wasn’t prepared to share app screenshots of its upcoming Apple Watch app, but it did divulge some details about it. The app will offer at-a-glance information on upcoming flights, including gate numbers and status, plus it lets users view their flight reservations within the United Airlines Apple Watch app. It will also pull a traveler’s boarding pass from the Passbook app, and it’s able to alert users if flight times or gate numbers change.
Southwest and Virgin America told VentureBeat they were not working on Apple Watch apps at the present time, but the two airlines, along with other airlines, will likely create apps as they see their competition developing apps for the device.
The Apple Watch will become available on April 24, with pre-orders beginning on April 10. Developers have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on apps ahead of the launch, with many even flying out to Cupertino for guidance from Apple, so there should be a wealth of third-party apps available to consumers right on launch day.

Top pros and cons of the HTC One M9
HTC has recently announced it will bring it’s new One M9 smartphone to the masses on April 10th after a slight delay due to software adjustments. This will be their third flagship smartphone in the ‘M’ series, and while they have improved upon a lot of things from their previous M8 smartphone, there are certain things to consider before deciding whether HTC’s latest should be your next device or not. We’ll start off with the negatives of the One M9.
CONS
Camera lacks OIS
Optical Image Stabilization is becoming a standard for top-tier smartphones nowadays, and has been included in flagships since 2013. OIS is a hardware feature in the camera that compensates for shaking of the camera while recording video, giving the user a smoother, more pleasant video experience. Considering the Nexus 5, a $350 phone from 2013, features OIS while HTC’s latest does not, will be a slight turn-off for many. If you’re not big into recording video however, this shouldn’t affect you.
Not water resistant
This is something we thought would be a standard as of last year, with the One M8, Galaxy S5, Xperia Z3 and Moto X all being at least somewhat water resistant. However so far this year neither the One M9 or the Galaxy S6 are water resistant, forcing customers to be extra cautious around rain and other aqueous situations.
Bezels
This one is a matter of design preference, however many are outspoken about how much they dislike the black “HTC bar” below the screen and how the side bezels could be a lot smaller. However, HTC spokesman Jeff Gordon explained awhile back that the black bar is necessary, as “underneath is a huge amount of circuitry, antennae, etc…”. Because of the One’s Boomsound speakers, which take up a great amount of space on the top and bottom of the phone, the black bar is something that has to stay for now.
The uncertainty of the Snapdragon 810 processor
The tale of the Qualcomm’s latest processor, the Snapdragon 810, is an interesting and somewhat mysterious one. Rumors of production problems for the chip started a long time ago, followed by talk that Qualcomm wasn’t quite ready for mass production of the 810 chip. Then, we heard Samsung had opted to use their Exynos CPU instead of the Snapdragon 810, a huge move that will no doubt put a dent in Qualcomm’s dominance. This is undoubtedly because Samsung will make more money using their own processors, but it doesn’t give us confidence knowing they believe their new chip is better than the Snapdragon 810 (which according to benchmark tests, it absolutely is).
Benchmarks aren’t everything, though. What about real world use? Well, this is where we lose even more confidence in the Snapdragon 810, as a recent thermal picture shows the One M9 heating to almost 140 degrees Fahrenheit next to cooler phones in the same environment. The phone reached these hot temperatures when running benchmarks, meaning it’ll get just as hot when playing intensive games. As of right now, this is heavily affecting battery life of the phone according to BGR. HTC’s Jeff Gordon took to twitter and explained that these results came from phone’s with unfinished software and are not final at all. We’ll have to see later if these overheating issues were the fault of HTC or Qualcomm, and if HTC can fix it with only software adjustments.
This is arguably our biggest fear and “con” for the One M9, as Qualcomm’s CPU will affect many things about the phone. HTC has included a very respectable 2,840 mAh battery in the phone, but that won’t help at all if this overheating problems is producing worse battery results than last year’s One M8.
PROS
Full metal design
Ever since the One M7, HTC has impressed millions with their aluminum metal designs. The One M8 took it a step further with a metal unibody design, meaning the metal connects the front and the back on the sides, rather than just back and front metal plates. The One M9 sports an almost identical design of the M8, but now offering gold colored aluminum on the sides of the device to compliment the silver front and back. It looks gorgeous still after two years of similar designs, and we’re glad they moved the power button to the side of the device for easy access.
Boomsound.
This barely needs explaining. HTC’s trademarked Boomsound stereo dual front-facing speakers is back and better than ever, with the inclusion of Dolby 5.1 surround, giving this phone one of the best entertainment experiences when watching a video or playing a game. It is a fact that these are the best smartphone speakers available.
Micro SD expansion
Something that not many smartphones can brag about is the ability to expand their storage, and the One M9 offers just that. Up to 128 GB can be utilized with an SD card with the One M9.
5 inch screen
Phablets are nice and all, as they provide big screens for people who want the best of a tablet and a phone, but not everybody has big enough hands to even use some of the behemoths that smartphone manufacturers are pumping out, and that’s where HTC saves the day with a compact 5″ flagship screen and 1080p resolution perfect to enjoy any kind of content.
Sense
HTC uses Sense 7 as their software overlay on top of Android Lollipop. It includes their signature Blinkfeed, which is a nice news and updates feed beautifully integrated into their homescreen. New with Sense 7 is the ability to change your phone’s theme, which includes the style of your homescreen icons, wallpapers, clock theme and more. HTC Sense is arguably one of the best looking Android UI’s and HTC has done a great job making it one of the fastest and most fluid Android experiences available.
IR blaster
Not many phones have built-in IR blasters, which allow them to control most nearby televisions. If you’re someone who would like their phone as a universal remote in your home, then the One M9 will surely deliver, as the IR blaster covers the top of the device.
“UH OH”
Life throws a lot of curve balls, and HTC knows that. On Wednesday, the company announced an industry disruptive incentive called UH OH, which gives HTC One M9 customers a 12 month period of time where if they damage their phone or need a new one, either by cracking the screen, receiving water damage or switching carriers, HTC will replace your phone, “hassle-free” when you call them directly, with zero charge. One of the best parts of this program? If you don’t need a replacement during the 12 months, HTC will reward you with $100 toward your next HTC One smartphone. Pretty amazing stuff.
These are our top points about the One M9, please share in the comments if there’s anything more you love or hate about the device.

Google publishes the Android Auto app to the Play Store
We first heard about Android Auto, Google’s foray into the automobile world, back at Google I/O 2014. While we’ve heard a ton of companies announce their plans to eventually make aftermarket head units, it’s taken quite awhile for Google to get the OS out to consumers. With that said, now consumers can finally get their chance to experience Auto for themselves, because Google has just published the Android Auto app to the Play Store.
The Android Auto app will allow you to listen to music, navigate using Google Maps, and a few other functions we’ve known about for awhile now. If you’re interested, here’s the full app description from the Play Store:
- Navigation with Google Maps – Free turn-by-turn navigation with lane guidance, live traffic conditions, points of interest, and more
- Hands-free phone and messaging – Make calls and send messages without taking your hands off the wheel
- Info and assistance – Get weather, traffic, commute information and more organized into simple cards
- Bring your music – Listen to your music and playlists in the car with your built-in stereo system

To make the app work, you’ll need to have a device running Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher, and you’ll need an Android Auto-compatible aftermarket head unit. Pioneer is the first manufacturer to bring its Android Auto head units to market, and so far the company has a number of units for sale in the U.S., U.K. and Australia. If you live in one of those areas and would like some more information, visit Pioneer’s website here.
Developers can now begin to push their Android Auto apps to Google Play for review. Google has made a handy Android Auto section in the Play Store for apps that can run on aftermarket head units. Applications in the list so far include Spotify, Stitcher, Pocket Casts, Google Play Music and many more.
We’ve scored some hands-on time with a number of different Android Auto head units in the past. Google first showed it off at I/O last year, and we even got some insight on Hyundai’s plans for the OS at CES 2015. We’ll certainly have more coverage for you as more head units become available. But for now, check out the videos below for some more info.

It might be awhile before most consumers can get their hands on a head unit. Even so, Google publishing the official app is a nice move forward. If you’d like to check out the Android Auto app for yourself, head to the Play Store link below.
Hugo Barra clarifies Xiaomi’s new relationship with Microsoft

Yesterday news broke that Windows 10 would be coming to the Xiaomi Mi4 in the form of a flashable ROM. As you might expect, this immediately led to all sorts of wild conclusions about how Xiaomi is getting into bed with Microsoft, or how future Xiaomi phones might offer dual-booting, ditch MIUI entirely in favor of Windows, and the list goes on.
In order to clarify the situation a bit further, Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra took to Google Plus with a statement. In the statement, Barra reiterates that this is just an experimental program led by Microsoft that Xiaomi is allowing, not necessarily directly participating in. The arrangement lets Microsoft work “directly with the Mi fan community in China”, but in no ways signals that Xiaomi has interest in moving away from the Android ecosystem and their MIUI software platform.
Quite the contrary. Xiaomi says they are “moving ahead full steam” to build “many exciting new Android-based features and services”. Hugo Barra also shoots down the idea of a dual-booting arrangement, or the idea that Windows 10 might run on top of Android in any way. Bottom-line, Xiaomi says they are supportive of users trying new things and “encourages them to do so all the time!”
Here’s statement in full:
We received many questions from Mi fans about an announcement made by Microsoft yesterday regarding Windows 10 Technical Preview for Mi 4 users in China. We’d like to clarify a few points.
– This is an experimental program led by Microsoft, working directly with the Mi fan community in China.
– Microsoft is working on a build of Windows 10 specifically for Mi 4 devices. This Windows 10 build will not be running on top of Android nor be available as a dual-boot option. A small number of Mi 4 power users from the Xiaomi Forum in China who choose to take part in this experimental program will have to manually re-flash their Mi 4 devices with this Windows 10 ROM, in the same way they would re-flash other Android ROMs.
– At Xiaomi, we are very supportive of users trying new things and we encourage them to do so all the time! That’s why all of our devices ship with unlocked bootloader, for example. That’s also why Xiaomi welcomes Microsoft team members to interact directly with members of the Xiaomi Forum in China. More details will be announced by Microsoft in the coming months. This program will only be available in China.
– Xiaomi continues to fully embrace the Android ecosystem through our MIUI software platform and we’re moving ahead full steam building many exciting new Android-based features and services.
What do you think of the idea of Windows 10 coming to Xiaomi, and likely other Android devices, in the future? The more ROMing options the better? Will this move actually have any positive impact for Microsoft?
Samsung announces high performance 128GB 3-bit NAND flash storage module for mobile devices
Samsung offers eMMC based storage modules to a multitude of manufacturers in the mobile industry. The company has now announced a new high performance 128GB eMMC 5.0 standard flash storage unit, which can be used on mobile devices.
The Korean manufacturer is targeting the mass market who might decide to use 128GB of internal storage with future flagships. Samsung’s own Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge come in 128GB storage configurations, which is a rarity in the Android world.
But with this news and Samsung’s eagerness to bring this to the mass market, we can see more manufacturers driven to use 128GB internal storage modules with smartphones and tablets in the coming days. The company points out that this flash storage module will be usable on midrange phones as well, so high end hardware is not a necessity. This 3-bit 128GB storage module has data transfer speeds of 260 MB/s, which is pretty quick.
“With the introduction of our value-focused, 3-bit NAND-based eMMC 5.0 line-up, we expect to take the lead in the expansion of high-density mobile storage,” said Dr. Jung-Bae Lee, Senior Vice President of Memory Product Planning and Application Engineering Team, Samsung Electronics. “We are continuing to enhance our next-generation embedded mobile memory offerings with improved performance and higher densities to meet increasing customer demand across the mobile industry.”

Apple Updates iPhoto for Mac to Prepare for Upcoming Transition to New Photos App [Mac Blog]
Apple today released a minor update for the iPhoto app for Mac to prepare for the upcoming transition to the OS X Photos app. According to the release notes, today’s update improves compatibility when migrating iPhoto libraries to the new Photos app available in OS X 10.10.3.
What’s new
-Improves compatibility when migrating iPhoto libraries to the new Photos app in the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 (available this spring)
-Fixes an issue that caused iPhoto to display only the first 25 images in a Facebook album
-Fixes an issue that could cause iPhoto to become unresponsive when printing an image
As we have known for months, the upcoming Photos for OS X app for the Mac is designed to be a replacement for iPhoto and Aperture, both of which Apple ceased developing last year.
Photos for OS X is an all new photo management app that’s been designed to integrate deeply with Photos for iOS. It introduces a Yosemite-style design that emphasizes flatness and translucency, and it works alongside iCloud Photo Library, streamlining photo availability across all of a user’s devices.
Reviews of the Photos for OS X app have suggested that it’s a vast improvement over iPhoto, with better photo editing tools and faster speeds, but it has been criticized for lacking many of the professional editing tools that were found within Aperture.
It is not clear when OS X 10.10.3 with the Photos app might see a public release, but thus far, the software is available to both developers and public beta testers. Developers have received four OS X 10.10.3 betas, and public beta testers have had access to two updates.
