Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff kicks off a Star Trek-themed event

Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff has started a new, Star Trek-themed event with today’s update.

The event sees the crew of the USS Enterprise enter the game, travelling back in time to 2015 in order to protect Stewie Griffin, the genius baby of the Griffin family from the Borg. Here’s what you’ll find in the update:

  • Engage in actions with your favorite Starfleet members, including Spock, Data, Worf, and more, all while embarking on deep space adventures and asteroid shooting. Pew pew!
  • Interacting with the transporter to send your crew on missions across the galaxy? We got that!
  • Creating cool stuff with the replicator? We got that too!Getting rid of hairy tribbles? Hell yeah, we’ve got that!
  • But danger looms around the corner. The Borg have recruited Bertram (yes, Bertram!) as their new leader and are preparing to assimilate both Quahogians and those aboard the USS Enterprise!

The event runs from today, March 19, through April 30, and features characters from both Star Trek: The Next Generation and the original series, including Captain Picard, Data, Worf, Geordi La Forge, and Captain Kirk, all voiced by their original actors.

You can download Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff from the App Store now.

Mac Switcher: Can my Windows Phone work with my Mac?

Just because you’ve bought a Mac doesn’t mean you have to buy an iPhone too. Here’s how to get your Windows Phone and your Mac working together.

Windows Phone runs a distant third behind iOS and Android in terms of U.S. marketshare, but Windows Phone isn’t something to ignore. A lot of Windows Phone handsets are inexpensive and work quite well. The appellation “Windows Phone” may give you a sense that such a device is not to be used with a Mac. But they can coexist quite happily.

W.F. writes:

“I just got my first Mac but I’m still using a Windows phone. Do I have to buy an iPhone if I want to sync data and listen to music from my Mac?”

The short answer is no, you don’t need an iPhone. You might need some additional software, but the good news is that it’s free.

I’ll admit that Apple tries to make it easy to have an iPhone and a Mac together; iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite introduced Continuity, a new set of features that makes it seamless to go from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac, or vice versa.

Having said that, Microsoft has taken steps to make sure that Mac users and users of Apple’s iCloud services aren’t left out in the cold.

The first thing to know is that you can set up your Windows Phone to access your iCloud account, so you can send emails, access calendars and see contact information that’s shared on your Mac, in the cloud.

All you need to do is tap on the Settings app on your Windows phone, go to email accounts and tap add an account. Select iCloud, enter your account information and password, and off you go — your Windows Phone is now synced to your iCloud account. Any changes you make on your phone should be reflected on your Mac, and vice versa, without any manual syncing.

Of course, that’s only one piece of the puzzle. W.F. wants music from his iTunes library on his Windows Phone too. Fortunately, Microsoft offers a free Mac app for download that helps. It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done.

Windows Phone is a free app available for download from the Mac App Store that helps you sync media files from your Mac. It can sync photos and videos you’ve recorded on the phone back to your Mac, too. It also lets you put movies, TV shows and podcasts in your iTunes library on the phone, and browse media files that are already on your devices.

It’s important to note that the Windows Phone app only works with files that are free of DRM, or digital rights management (copy protection) features, so TV shows and movies you’ve downloaded from the iTunes Store won’t work (music should, though — Apple stopped copy-protecting music from iTunes years ago). But if you’ve “ripped” stuff yourself from DVDs you own using tools like Handbrake on your Mac, they should work just fine.

If you’re a Windows Phone user and you’re looking for the best Windows information, make sure to check out our sister Mobile Nations site Windows Central!

Final Fantasy XI is coming to mobile next year

Role-playing game fans can find plenty of mobile Final Fantasy games on the market, with several more like Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius and Final Fantasy Legends: The Space-Time Crystal due out this year. On the whole, they range from re-releases of classics to mash ups of characters from various games to original titles bearing the Final Fantasy name. But there has never been a mobile Final Fantasy MMO in the vein of Final Fantasy XI and XIV… until now.

Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix and the Korean branch of Nexon Corporation (Maple Story) have announced plans to bring the first massively multiplayer online Final Fantasy — Final Fantasy XI — to mobile platforms in 2016. The mobile version will feature both single-player and online multiplayer gameplay.

Originally released on PC in 2002, Final Fantasy XI is Square-Enix’s longest-running and most successful MMO to date. Nexon Korea plans to recapture that magic on smartphones and tablets while adding some improvements of its own:

  • Improved single-player functionality
  • Enhanced battle system
  • Easier party organization
  • New in-game events and features
  • New character art style

Seeing as how Final Fantasy XI Mobile is still a long way off, much about it remains up in the air. The chief question is how it will be monetized. Existing versions of the game charge players a $13 monthly fee. Subscription models don’t tend to work well (or at all) on mobile. But will the mobile game be entirely free to play, or will it be premium with in-app purchases?

Hopefully we’ll find out well before Final Fantasi XI Mobile launches next year. The game will be released in North America, Europe, Japan, Korea, and parts of Asia.

In other Final Fantasy XI news, Square Enix plans to release a three-part final scenario to the PC game this year. After that, only bug fixes and content balance updates will be released. Additionally, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 versions of the game will stop being supported in March 2016. They’ve had a good run!

Keep text messages private with 1500 copies of Secret SMS and MMS

When it comes to keeping our messages secure we are all aware that our BlackBerry devices have our backs. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t take extra precautions safeguarding our personal messages from prying eyes. While multiple applications are at our disposal to hide unwanted text messages from other uses, having one more option at your fingertips is always a good thing.

With Secret SMS and MMS, selected contacts and their conversations are stored within the application and removed from the Hub. Similar to the Private SMS feature in their populate Privacy Suite Pro application, this time it gets its own standalone headless version with some nice additions to improve the experience.

Modern Combat 5: Blackout goes free-to-play on iPhone and iPad

As part of its spring content update, first-person shooter Modern Combat 5: Blackout is going free-to-play on the iPhone and iPad.

Previously available for $5.99, Blackout was one of our favorite games without in-app purchases. The game is now free to download and play, and in-app purchases come along as a part of that.

Blackout now features an energy system, which limits how often you can play. You’ll get a certain amount of time to play for free, which can be extended by purchasing more energy. If you elect not to pay, you’ll need to wait for your energy to refill. Players that have already paid for the game are given Veteran status. Veterans don’t need to pay for energy, and can play as much as they want without additional payments.

The spring content update also brings new weapons, more customization, the Support character class, and controller support. There’s also a new multiplayer game mode, Zone Control.

You can download Modern Combat 5: Blackout now from the App Store.
