HTC’s One E9+ gets quietly announced with high resolution 5.5-inch screen

htc one e9+HTC has very quietly listed the One E9+ on their Chinese website, detailing the phablet ahead of its official launch. The E9+ sports a massive 5.5-inch quad HD screen, giving it a higher resolution than what HTC’s current crop of flagships use. This marks HTC’s first foray into quad HD resolutions, catching up with Samsung and LG.

Other specs include a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek processor, 3 GB of RAM, and a very capable 20 megapixel camera on the backside of the device. You’ll find 16 GB of expandable storage, a 2,800 mAh battery, and an UltraPixel front facing camera, plus BoomSound speakers above and below the screen. Those speakers sound fantastic, but on a device like this, it means the phone is going to be very big compared to other 5.5-inch offerings.

No word on pricing or availability just yet, but the site shows the device will be available in three different colors; Meteor Gray, Classic Rose Gold, or Gold Sepia. HTC will likely fill in the rest of the details soon.

Microsoft Research’s Hyperlapse for Windows Phone surfaces in an internal beta

Back in Summer 2014 Microsoft Research pulled the wraps off its Hyperlapse project, a video algorithm to smooth out shaky video footage and generate first-person timelapses. It’s been all quiet since then, but now an internal beta has surfaced for an app to bring Hyperlapse to Windows Phone.

Apple Watch Edition buyers said to get premium support for their $10,000+ purchase

Turns out that when you spend $10,000 or more on an Apple Watch, Apple will go out of their way to make sure you’re taken care of.

It’s not terribly surprising to hear that Apple’s planning to roll out the red carpet for Apple Watch Edition buyers. The solid 18-karat gold casings that will demand from $10,000 up to $17,000 are reportedly going to come with premium perks for customers, including private appointments in Apple Stores and a dedicated support line.

According to 9to5Mac, the perks are many:

Longer, Private Appointments: Apple plans to complete in-store Apple Watch Edition purchases during special appointments within a dedicated, private Apple Watch Edition try-on area. The Apple Watch Edition will have its own try-on table separate from the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport, and the purchasing process will last up to one hour, including 30 minutes for simply trying on the highest end Apple Watch. (There will be 5 to 15-minute appointments for the other models.)

Virtual Personal Setup: Apple will allow a customer to video conference from home with an online Apple Store employee to learn about the Apple Watch. This program will be offered to both Edition and standard stainless steel Apple Watch buyers. However, Apple Watch Edition customers will be given an exclusive, dedicated Apple Watch Edition phone line for two years of 24/7 technical support (in English). With AppleCare+, this is upgraded to three years.

No Waiting In Line: Unlike stainless steel Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport customers, those seeking to buy the Apple Watch Edition will not have to wait in a line. Sources say that potential Edition buyers will have priority access to assistance, effectively skipping the line of other waiting customers. Experts will be able to help a couple of customers try-on Watches simultaneously, unlike standard employees who will simultaneously help as many stainless steel and Sport customers as necessary.

In addition, Apple Watch Edition and steel Apple Watch will have a “virtual personal setup” option to allow the new owner to engage in a video chat set-up of their new smartwatch. And even though the luxury-level Edition won’t be available in every store, the appointment necessary to try one one will summon a courier to bring the fancy gold watch to the store. One thing to note, regardless of the Apple Watch model you’re considering, is that Apple won’t be offering business pricing, financing, or bulk-purchase discounts at launch.

Those that aren’t looking to spend several thousand dollars on an Apple Watch, however, can expect to still get the standard 90 days of complimentary support and a 1-year hardware warranty with the base model $375 Apple Watch Sport. AppleCare+ will also be available for all Apple Watch models, adding a year to warranty coverage and providing accidental damage coverage.

If you’re looking for an Apple Watch that’s not on the “gently-used car” side of the pricing spectrum, Apple will still have a watch-buying system set up for you. Customers looking to buy an Apple Watch in-store will be taken to a display table with an array of Apple Watches inside on display with demo screens running. Drawers locked by employee-held RFID keys will store the actual Apple Watches used in try-on in special charging docks. Try-on watches will also be running a demo loop, though the “taptic” feedback engine will be enabled so customers can get a feel for what they’ll be feeling. Once a customer’s picked out a watch, they’ll be able to use the Personal Setup stations in Apple Stores to get their watch set up and paired with their iPhones.

Apple Watch in-store previews and pre-orders are kicking off on April 10, with sales and shipments starting on April 24.

samsung galaxy s6 vs iphone 6 12

Android fans, this week brought us closer to the release of the hot new Galaxy S6 and One M9; Cyanogen made waves again with its aggressive rhetoric against Google; leaks revealed our first credible look at the LG G4, due in late April; we heard rumors about the One M9+ and the Galaxy S6 Active; Google updated some of its apps and we heard reports about some new ones; a bezel-less Oppo device broke cover; Xiaomi teased a new device for March 31; and finally OnePlus said it’s preparing to unveil a… drone?

Inside AA HQ

Josh worked hard to get the second big review of the season, the One M9, in time for the embargo on Sunday evening (seriously, HTC, weekend embargoes are always a bad idea). You should definitely check it out if you’re interesting in buying the new M9 or just to see how it stacks up.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

As for what’s next, Lanh has the Galaxy S6 Edge and he’ll be bringing his impressions pretty soon, while our resident ninja, Kevin, is about to get his review of the exotic Meizu M1 Note out in no time.

We’re ramping out our sister site, TabTimes. Derek pushed out a fresh new design and Jon is in charge of bringing you steaming-hot posts about iPad, Android tablets, Windows tablets, and everything else. Let us know what kind of content you would like to see more of!

Last week it was a Galaxy S6. Today, it’s a Nexus 9 that we’re putting up for grabs in our weekly international giveaway. It takes just a minute to throw your name in the hat: check it out here!

Apple Watch for Sale in Retail Stores by Reservation Only, No Walk-In Sales

As the Apple Watch launch approaches, details have been leaking out about how Apple will be handling sales of their new device. According to leaked Apple documentation, the company will not be selling the Apple Watch to walk-in customers at launch.

Paris Galeries Lafayette Apple Watch
Apple will begin offering online pre-sales of the Apple Watch starting on April 10th, with the first deliveries occurring on April 24th, the official Apple Watch launch date. During those two weeks, customers will be able to have hands-on “try-on” appointments at Apple retail stores in order to help make up their mind.

However, according to training documents that MacRumors has received, Apple is not allowing any walk-in retail purchases for the Apple Watch at launch. Instead customers must make an online “Product Reservation” to hold a specific Apple Watch model at a retail store. This new “Product Reservation” system is used instead of Apple’s “Personal Pickup” system for Apple Watches. Apple’s retail training documents indicate that “If a customer walks in and wants to purchase a watch, offer the option to try on a watch. Then help them place an order online or through the Apple Store app.”

Apple seems to expect low inventory for the Apple Watches, and notes that “try-on” appointments also do not reserve a specific Apple Watch for purchase. Apple expects to eventually allow walk-in purchases, but not until the initial wave of demand has passed.
