Cleopatra the tortoise gets a 3D-printed shell

Please don’t jump on Cleopatra if you meet her. She isn’t a real life red-shelled Koopa Troopa — she’s just wearing a 3D-printed prosthesis. See, Cleo the tortoise suffers from pyramiding, which means her shell has thick, pyramid-like growths due to poor nutrition. It also has holes and broken parts that could be injured and infected, especially since tortoises socialize and mate by climbing on top of each other. That’s why Roger Henry, a student from Colorado Technical University, designed a 3D-printed shell for Cleo.

He spent 600 hours wrangling with software to ensure the tortoise’s prosthetic will fit her perfectly, using data from Denver 3D Printing Store’s scans of her shell. After that, they used biodegradable corn-based plastic to print out the final product. It will protect Cleo until her shell heals in a few years, now that she’s being fed a proper diet by the folks at the Canyon Critters Reptile Rescue HQ in Colorado. Now, excuse us while we call up a producer and pitch a show about Cleo and Derby the dog with a 3D-printed pawsthetic as a crime-fighting duo.

Weekly photo contest: Filters

The weekly photo contest is back with a new theme and a new week to show off your best work. This time around we’re asking to see your best efforts with filters. Those weird and wonderful effects that helped make Instagram so popular can be a great way to simply and effectively make your photos take on a whole new life.

Like the shot up top. I took this relatively pleasant, if somewhat uninteresting scene while catching 5 minutes after a press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. But with a little goofing around in Camera 360 Sight it became (or so I think, at least) something worth keeping. So, as ever, read on for the full rundown on this weeks contest and to see who won last week’s!

LG Watch Urbane Launching April 27

LG is planning on making its third step into the world of smartwatches with the LG G Watch Urbane. The watch is a bit more sophisticated than the stunning G Watch R, and is more suited for normal wear as opposed to active wear.

The new design is polished and refined, with dust and water resistance included. Under the hood, the internals are identical to the G Watch R, so you can expect a half gig of RAM, a Snapdragon 400, and a 410 mAh battery.

According to Clove, you can expect to see the G Watch to be released April 27th for about 225 GBP, or near $335. Anyone who has a device running Android 4.3 can use the Android Wear-powered watch, so if that’s you, keep an eye out on TalkAndroid.com for more updates on when and where you can get an LG G Watch Urbane.

Tim Cook: ‘Religious Freedom’ laws are pro-discrimination

Tim Cook has taken a public stand against legislation like Indiana’s new Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Cook penned an editorial that appeared on the Washington Post Web site in which he called such legislation “something very dangerous” happening in states across the country.

Critics of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and other similar bills and laws say that they make it easier for businesses to discriminate against gays, lesbians, the transgendered and others. Supporters of the Indiana law, which goes into effect in July, say that it protects individuals’ religious liberty.

Cook says such bills are “designed to enshrine discrimination in state law.”

These bills rationalize injustice by pretending to defend something many of us hold dear. They go against the very principles our nation was founded on, and they have the potential to undo decades of progress toward greater equality.

Cook acknowledged that he is gay in an editorial posted by Bloomberg last fall. He said faith is important to him, but was never taught that “religion should be used as an excuse to discriminate.”

I remember what it was like to grow up in the South in the 1960s and 1970s. Discrimination isn’t something that’s easy to oppose. It doesn’t always stare you in the face. It moves in the shadows. And sometimes it shrouds itself within the very laws meant to protect us.

Cook added that “Apple is open” to everyone, regardless of laws passed in states like Indiana or his own home state of Arkansas.

This isn’t a political issue. It isn’t a religious issue. This is about how we treat each other as human beings. Opposing discrimination takes courage. With the lives and dignity of so many people at stake, it’s time for all of us to be courageous.

Apple Won’t Allow Swapping of Bands at Apple Watch ‘Try-On’ Appointments

The Apple Watch will be available for in store previews and Try-On appointments starting on April 10th. The Apple Watch comes in a variety of sizes, colors, and band-types which can make the decision of how to pick a band and Apple Watch combination complicated.

applewatchtable
Apple has a number of recommended combinations highlighted on their online store, but also sells bands separately, allowing customers to potentially mix and match between the various Apple Watches and bands. Some combinations could yield a mix of materials that readers feared may not look natural together, such as an aluminum Apple Watch Sport and a stainless steel accented band. The stainless steel Apple Watch is the most cosmetically versatile but carries a $200 premium over the aluminum Apple Watch Sport.

Apple, however, will not allow customers to try arbitrary mix and match options during their Apple Watch Try-On appointments, presumably in the interest of time and simplicity. According to retail training materials MacRumors received, Apple specifically states that they “will not size links or swap bands” at the Try-on table or Try-on cases. Try-on appointments for non-Edition Apple Watches are meant to last only 5-15 minutes. Apple will have 18 specific Apple Watch combinations on display at their Try-On tables and 10 specific combinations at their Try-On cases.

Apple Watch pre-sales and try-on appointments start on April 10th, and the official launch of the Apple Watch is April 24th.

HTC One E9+ makes an official appearance on HTC in China

HTC devices are pretty notorious for being leaked early. They usually come from inside sources from material that is being prepared for a launch. Other times it comes from testers who snap some photos and send out details to others. When a new device gets quietly launched on an official channel, it really isn’t much […]
