iPhone or iPad freezing when you delete apps? Here’s the work-around!
You touch and hold an icon to put your iPhone or iPad into jiggly mode, tap the X button to delete an app, and then… nothing.
Literally nothing. Everything just freezes up and seems to hang for a while. Eventually the confirm delete dialog box pops up, but it takes way longer than it should. Instead of letting you quickly delete an app and get on with using your device, it just feels like everything is locked up and you’re stuck. If you’re experiencing this problem on iOS 8 here’s the good news — there is a workaround, and we’re tacking it on this week’s iOS Help.

Ever since I’ve been using iOS 8, my iPhone freezes up when I try to delete an app. I can’t do anything when this happens other than wait an excruciatingly long time for the delete option to finally pop up. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?
Not everyone seems to experience this issue but those that do seem to typically have the following things in common:
Those who experience hanging typically have the following things in common:
- Lots of apps installed on your iPhone or iPad (200+)
- Lots of apps running in the background
- iOS 8.0 or higher
Luckily, there is a way to stop the freezing issue from happening, at least until Apple issues a permanent fix.
How to stop your iPhone or iPad from freezing when deleting apps
This issue seems to result from a way iOS handles memory. Closing all open apps from the multitasking section of iOS before trying to delete an app solves the problem. If you don’t know how to do that, just follow these steps:
- Double tap your Home button on your iPhone or iPad to bring up multitasking.
- Swipe all open apps up in order to close them.
- You can touch and throw away up to three apps at once to save time
Once all the apps have been closed, try deleting an app again. The freezing should be gone.
Special thanks to Ratkat on Twitter for pointing out this workaround!

ESPN Hub gets a major makeover to become ESPN App on Windows Phone 8.1
Although official sports apps tend to share the same status as banking apps on Windows Phone – that is, ignored – ESPN is not one of them. This morning version 1.0 of the ESPN App, formerly known as the ESPN Hub, went live in the Store.
The new ESPN App looks to have been completely re-written and ready for Windows Phone 8.1. We last wrote about ESPN Hub back in December, 2013 so this makeover has been a long time in the making.
Twitter launches Periscope, an app for broadcasting live video from your iPhone
Periscope, the live-streaming video app purchased by Twitter, is now available to let you broadcast your life to the world.
Periscope lets you both broadcast and watch real-time video from your iPhone. Your followers can watch and comment, and by tapping on the video as they watch, they can send you hearts to let you know that they like your broadcast.Once you’ve finished streaming, you can make your video available for your followers to replay for the next 24 hours, and you can delete replays before then if you want.
Speaking of followers, Periscope uses your Twitter account to sign you in, and helps you find people to follow. You can announce your broadcasts through Twitter by tapping the bird icon before you start. If you don’t want to share your broadcasts with everyone, tapping the lock icon before you start will allow you to select specific people to invite to your stream

Amazon Cloud Drive users can now buy access to unlimited storage
Amazon is allowing people who sign up for its Amazon Cloud Drive service the option to pay for an unlimited amount of storage for photos, videos and other files.
Amazon has two subscription options for this new service. One offers an unlimited amount of space for photos, with 5GB of extra space for videos and other files, for $11.99 per year. The other option gives users an unlimited amount of storage for any kind of file for $59.99 per year.
Both options come with a free three month trial. Amazon says:
Prime members and Fire device owners who already enjoy unlimited photo storage can choose to sign up for the Unlimited Everything Plan to store videos and files in addition to photos. Existing Cloud Drive customers can change their plans now by simply logging into their Cloud Drive accounts.
This new move by Amazon puts yet another wrinkle in the ongoing cloud storage wars. Microsoft announced in January that it would offer an unlimited amount of storage via OneDrive for Office 365 subscribers. Those subscriptions start at $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year. Apple’s iCloud has storage options for 200GB for $3.99 a month, 500GB for $9.99 a month and 1TB for $19.99 a month.

Microsoft rolling out beta invites for Skype on the web
Microsoft is providing yet another way to keep in contact with friends and family by releasing invites for the “Skype for Web” beta.
It’s a fully featured Skype experience but is instead powered by your favorite web browser. Not only are basic text conversations supported, but both video and regular voice calls too.
For the time being, the beta program appears to be open to those who have received invitations from Microsoft to try out Skype for Web. You may need to install the plug-in.
There’s no word as to when we can expect to see Skype for Web released to the masses, but for now it’s looking as though Microsoft will provide a solution to those who don’t have access to one of many Skype apps available.
