Amazon Fire TV gets USB storage support, dorm Wi-Fi connectivity and more in new update

Amazon Fire -13

Amazon has just announced a new update for the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick that will add much more functionality to each device. Most notably, both devices are getting support for Wi-Fi hotspots that require web authentication. This means you’ll now get to connect your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick to hotel or dorm room Wi-Fi hotspots. Amazon notes that this new Wi-Fi support will only work with some universities, so you may want to check with your college’s IT professional before you go out and buy one of these devices.

The next feature is for the Fire TV only, and it brings support for expandable USB storage. This means you’ll be able to off-load any big games, movies or shows to your USB flash drive that you don’t want taking up precious on-board storage on your device.

There are a few other notable features coming to each device, so let’s take a look at the full changelog:

  • Expandable USB storage on Amazon Fire TV—You can now use a connected USB mass storage device to expand your Fire TV storage for downloaded apps and games—this enables you to have more games downloaded for easy access.
  • Connect to your hotel or dorm room Wi-Fi with captive portal support out of the box—Take your favorite movies, TV shows, games, and more with you away from home—Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are the first streaming media devices to enable you to connect to Wi-Fi that requires web authentication—this includes Wi-Fi at most major hotels, as well as some universities.
  • Private listening on Fire TV—Enjoy favorite movies and TV shows after the kids go to sleep, without worrying about waking them up. Support for wireless Bluetooth headphones to Fire TV lets you listen to your movie, TV show, or music without bothering others in your household.
  • Browse and search Prime Playlists—Prime members can now take advantage of hand-crafted Prime Music playlists directly from Fire TV and Fire TV Stick—there are hundreds of expertly curated Prime Playlists to choose from based on your mood, activity or even artist or decade of choice.
  • Hidden PIN entry—With the new PIN entry screen that hides the numbers selected, you can now make sure your kids (or freeloading friends) can’t see your device PIN as you enter it on-screen to confirm a purchase on Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.
  • New shortcuts—Quickly put your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick to sleep or enable display mirroring by pressing and holding the Home button on your remote.

The update is scheduled to arrive to both devices “in the coming weeks”, though we don’t have any more information beyond that. This news follows the announcement from earlier today that the Amazon Fire TV Stick is making its way to Europe on April 15th for £35/€35.

OnePlus releases another #OneGameChanger teaser image

oneplus_its_almost_here_one_game_changer_teaser

This April, OnePlus has plans to unveil a new device that promises to be a “game changer.” The company says that it is not a tablet or a smartwatch. While it could be a phone, there would certainly be disappointment due to the hype and mystery building. Plenty of speculation surrounds the device with a set-top box or mobile gaming controller being popular guesses. Today, the company posted the image seen above that has the unannounced device covered by a red cloth. The caption does note that an announcement is coming soon, especially with the month of April right around the corner.

What do you think OnePlus has coming? Let us know in the comments.

xiaomi

There is a handset roaming around the world that is known internally by Xiaomi as ‘Ferrari.’ Although we have no idea what the phone looks like (yet), we do know about its specifications. On GFXBench, pretty much everything going into the handset was exposed.

The handset has a 4.9-inch display with 1920×1080 (Full HD) resolution. The processor stated here is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 paired with 2GB of RAM to keep things running smoothly. When it comes to cameras, Xiaomi has selected a 12MP lens for the rear and a 4.8MP lens to face users. All of this is sitting behind Android 5.0.2 which will be covered by Xiaomi’s own software overlay.

Not bad specifications at all. Now let’s see where Xiaomi decides to release the handset.

JXE Streams: Digging in the ‘Metroid’ dirt of PS4’s ‘Axiom Verge’

Axiom Verge — a grotesque and intoxicating new action game for PlayStation 4 due out next week — wears its heart on its sleeve. From the aliens wandering its creepy interconnected halls to the variety of unusual tools you find exploring its twisted world, creator Tom Happ’s game explicitly calls back to Nintendo’s Metroid. Rather than lose its identity in an homage mishmash, Axiom Verge actually uses that inspiration to build a demanding game that feels as new as it does eerie. We’ll dig into its deep parts and interview Happ himself on today’s stream!

Starting at 3PM ET on Engadget.com/gaming, Twitch.tv/joystiq and right here in this post, we’ll be playing the first two hours of Axiom Verge for your viewing pleasure. Then creator Tom Happ will join us at 4PM to discuss the game and the thorny business of making a successor to Metroid.

Enjoy the stream? Follow us on Twitch to know when we go live!

[We’re playing a digital copy of Axiom Verge on PS4 streamed through an Elgato Capture HD via OBS at 720p.]

Samsung starts rolling out stability update for the Galaxy S4

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Back_Bottom_GS4_Logo_TA

Samsung is currently pushing out a relatively minor over-the-air stability update to all unlocked variants of the Galaxy S4 currently located Europe. Sadly, this upgrade doesn’t bring much in terms of added functionality, but it does include the latest builds of KNOX and Silent Mode, as well as a handful of ‘system stability improvements,’ all aimed at making a user’s experience better when using the handset.

Hit the break for the complete changelog.

  • Samsung KNOX V2.0
  • Silent Mode
  • Bug fixes
  • Security Optimizations

If you own a Galaxy S4 (I9500) and have not yet received the OTA update, you can head into “Settings,” then “About Device,” and select “Check for Updates” to manually scan for the upgrade. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification on your handset prompting you to download and install the update.
