Pioneer launches second-generation CarPlay head units, starting at $700
Pioneer has released the second generation of its NEX head units with Apple’s CarPlay.
These new systems, which first debuted at CES 2015, offer integration not only with CarPlay, but Google’s Android Auto. They also come with Pioneer’s AppRadio, which connects to both iOS and Android devices, either over Bluetooth or a wired connection. There are five new units in total, according to Pioneer:
The 2015 NEX line includes the AVIC-8100NEX, AVIC-7100NEX and AVH-4100NEX, the first products to offer consumers both Android™ Auto and Apple CarPlay™ connectivity to provide maximum smartphone connectivity flexibility. Two additional models, the AVIC-6100NEX and AVIC-5100NEX, offer only Apple CarPlay compatibility.
CarPlay is Apple’s system for connecting your iPhone to your car. It allows you to access apps like Maps, Phone, Messages, and Music, as well as compatible third-party apps. CarPlay came to many of Pioneer’s existing head units last year as part of a software update, while this year’s receivers were built with CarPlay in mind from the start.
The receivers start at $700 for the AVH-4100NEX, which started shipping last week, and go all the way up to $1,400 for the AVIC-8100NEX. All five units are available now from authorized Pioneer retailers.

Apple and IBM MobileFirst for iOS apps now localized for Japan
IBM Japan, in partnership is Apple, has announced the localization of MobileFirst for iOS apps for the Japanese market.
The Apple + IBM partnership was created to bring world-class app design and development to enterprise, and make iPhone and iPad deployment as deep as it was wide. A large part of that is going to be international, and it’s beginning with seven apps localized for Japan: Advise & Grow (Banking and Financial Markets), Trusted Advice (Banking and Financial Markets), Retention (Insurance), Case Advice (Government), Sales Assist (Retail), Pick & Pack (Retail) and Expert Tech (Telecommunications).
Apple and IBM released the initial wave of MobileFirst apps in the U.S. back in December. Having worked in international enterprise for years, I’m used to apps that had all the polish and usability of long-sunken battleships. These are not those. These meld Apple-level design with IBM’s vertical expertise, and now they’re doing it not only for the English speaking enterprise, but for Japan as well. Hopefully more will follow.
After years of purchases based on checklist and interfaces as afterthought, it’ll be interesting to see if MobileFirst can do for software what BYOD did for phones and tablets — make the experience matter. And not just across companies, but across continents.
You can find out more on Apple Japan’s mobile enterprise page.

New Apple Wireless Keyboard with backlight controls pops up in Online Store
A new version of Apple’s wireless keyboard seems to have popped up on a number of the company’s online stores around the world.
The new keyboard, like those found on Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops, now seems to have backlight controls on the F5 and F6 keys, indicating that the standalone keyboard could be backlit, though there are no other signs that this is the case. Previously, those keys were blank, with no pre-assigned function. The keyboard also appears to have a power button taking place of the eject key, which now has little purpose on most Apple devices.
Images of the keyboard have been spotted on Apple’s Online Store for the Czech Republic, as well as their store in Hungary. An Arabic variant of the keyboard has even appeared on the U.S. store. No new descriptions accompany the images describing any new functions, so any other changes to the keyboard are unknown at this time.
This new keyboard does not seem to take after the one found on Apple’s new MacBook. That keyboard features bigger keys with a new font, as well as the new butterfly switch mechanism, which replaces the scissor switches found in Apple’s Air and Pro models, as well as the Wireless Keyboard.
As of right now the Apple Wireless Keyboard remains available for its standard price of $69.99.

Instagram introduces ‘Layout’: it’s like collages, but for Instagram
Social photos network Instagram has launched a new app — Layout — that makes it easy to combine multiple photos into one collage.
Layout offers the option to combine multiple photos in your own custom layouts. Well, “custom” as far as arraying them left-to-right, top-to-bottom, or mirroring are considered to be custom. Within each frame of the layout, though, you’ll have full freedom to resize and rotate your images, as well as dragging to adjust the size of each frame.
As you’d be working with multiple photos, Layout only works with photos you’ve already got on your phone (it’d be a pain trying to do that all in-app with the camera). In addition to making collages with your existing photos, Layout also features “Photo Booth”: tap the button, it runs a countdown, then it snaps a series of photos and puts them into a layout automatically. You know, like an old-timey photo booth.
Layout is available today today for iOS users, with it hitting Android “in the coming months”.

Apple seeds new OS X 10.10.3 build to developers and public testers
Apple has released another build of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, both for developers, along with members of the AppleSeed public beta program.
Developers can get this latest build from the Apple Developer Center, or by going to the Updates section of the Mac App Store on a Mac already running the latest developer beta. There, developers can also find the latest Yosemite Recovery Update. AppleSeed testers can also download the latest build from the Mac App Store.
OS X 10.10.3 contains the new Photos for Mac app. The app will let you view, manage, and edit your iCloud Photo Library on your Mac, and will replace Apple’s current iPhoto and Aperture applications when it launches to the public at some point this spring.
