HTC enlists Robert Downey Jr. again for more insane commercials
I have said it a million times that HTC’s Achilles Heel is their marketing department. They just don’t seem to have any focus on what they are doing. Sure, Samsung has more money to spend, but their “The Next Big Thing Is Already Here” commercials were clear to the consumer.
Now with the launch of the One M9, HTC has brought back Robert Downey Jr. again. Robert Downey Jr. is a fantastic actor and someone who can bring some attention to the struggling company, but I am not sure this is the way to use him.

Galaxy S6 teardown reveals a battery that’s almost impossible to replace

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is a cutting edge piece of mobile technology, so who can resist wanting to take a peek inside at the hardware and at how it’s all put together? MyFixGuide has taken the flagship apart, revealing a wonderfully put together smartphone, but this design comes at the expense of easy repairs.
Immediately, the new metal and glass build is a little trickier to work with than the old plastic back covers, especially if you want to avoid damage upon opening. It took 2-3 minutes of warming up the smartphone with a heat gun before the back panel could be removed. There’s then a middle frame, held in by screws, with the NFC circuitry placed on top.
Inside, the nifty Exynos 7420 SoC is neatly arranged on a slim form motherboard, accompanied by the RAM and flash memory, and SIM slots. The flip-side of the same board houses the NFC, heart rate sensor and infra-red sensors chips. The headphone jack, speaker and cameras are all connected via by familiar leads. The battery takes up the bulk of the interior space and it doesn’t look like Samsung could have squeeze much more than a 2,550mAh component into this form factor.
Interestingly, some had claimed that the Galaxy S6 still features a removable battery, despite Samsung glancing over the point during its announcement. While not technically wrong, the battery is secured in such a way that makes it virtually inaccessible to the vast majority of users. Even after removing the cover, the middle frame, NFC wiring and motherboard must also all be unscrewed before gaining access to the battery connection. This certainly isn’t as user friendly as simply taking off the cover and swapping batteries in and out.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 is clearly very well put together, but the transition to new build materials has necessitated a compromise on some of the old feature favourites, namely the lack of a microSD card slot and a battery that, for all intents and purposes, is locked in place.
Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact review
SONY XPERIA Z3 TABLET COMPACT
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is one of the best tablets on the market today. It is a continued example of Sony’s eye to detail and design. With waterproof features, a super slim frame, awesome performance and fantastic media capabilities, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is sure to impress anyone who uses it.
Razer Thin, Waterproof Design
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a device that not only showcases internal but also external beauty. The predominate color on the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a rich, radiant white that makes most bridal dresses look dull. Pair that with the metal silver trimming on the sides and an almost razor thin body, and you have a device that’s fit for the 21st century.
Did I mention the device is thin? Weighing in at only 270 g and a depth of only 0.25 in, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is one of the thinnest and lightest tablets we have reviewed to date. It was comfortable to hold, as my hand didn’t have to strain to hold up the device. A great plus for those that like to use their tablets as e-readers, as you now don’t have to take as many breaks away from that latest bestseller everyone is talking about.
One of the awesome features about the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is the fact that it’s water proof, with a rating of IP65/68. This means that the ports on the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact are covered to keep water and dust form entering the device, otherwise it would be the worst waterproof device out there. The microSD card slot is located on the left, right under the magnetic charging port. On the opposite side, you have the power, volume buttons, and the aux port. Finally on the bottom is the microUSB port. So just the standard ports and buttons commonly found on any tablets, minus the magnetic charging port.
TRILUMINOS Display
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact has a gorgeous 8 inch display that makes watching videos, reading e-books, or just plain old internet browsing a great experience. Colors were vivid and rich thanks to Sony’s proprietary TRILUMINOS screen technology. We took the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact out for some testing in broad daylight and found that it performed marvelously well. Screen brightness only had to be modified a bit for us to continue to be able to read the screen. The TRILUMINOS technology makes all colors appear much more vibrant than they would otherwise, which really helps the user when the device is subjected to endure the suns glaring rays.
4500 mAh Battery
The Sony Xperia Z3 tablet has a whopping 4500 mAh battery that last a very long time. Sony states that the device can play 170 hours of music, or 15 hours of video before having to be plugged back in. During our testing, we found those statements to be close. With moderate use, I was able to use the device for four days before I had to charge it back up. Very impressive, for such a thin device.
PS4 Remote Play
One of the best features of the Xperia Z3 line is the ability to sync it up with your PlayStation 4 for remote play. That means that if you are knee-deep in enemy territory and your roommate comes home early and really, really wants to catch that final episode of Game of Thrones, you can still keep playing by using your Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The way it works is simple, make sure that both devices are on the same WiFi network, download the PS4 Remote Play app from the Play Store, then open the app and follow the instructions. Simple, right?
I tried it on my PS4 and found the connections to be very stable. I didn’t have the mounting accessory so that I can connect it to my controller, but I found that just propping the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact on my desk was more than sufficient. The device was able to handle the remote play games with ease and the graphics looked awesome. Overall, I was very impressed with how the feature worked.
Camera
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact has an 8.1 rear camera and 2.2 front camera, both with 1080p video recording. As you can see from the images below, the Sony Xperia Tablet Compact took some okay shots, though I wouldnt get rid of your primary camera just yet. The images appeared a tad bit grainy, and it didn’t do to well with dark scenes. With that said though, if you bought this device for its video and camera abilities, you bought it for the wrong reasons. It fared about as well as any of the other like devices we have reviewed
Performance
Performance on the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact was spectacular. The tablet has a Snapdradon 801 Quad Core processor, 3GB of Ram, and it runs on Android 4.4.4. All that means that the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact can handle anything that you throw at it. Which is nice, since its geared towards users who enjoy multimedia. We wasted no time in downloading our favorite games and giving them a whirl. All of them looked great on the 8-inch display and graphics were smooth and crisp. We didn’t have a game slow down, or any app for that matter, during the entire time we used the device.
Final Thoughts
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is definitely one of our favorite tablets right now. With excellent performance, fantastic build quality, and great added features, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact should be on everyone’s wishlist. For more information regarding the device, you can head over to Sony’s official page or to Amazon.

Angry Birds Developer Rovio Reports First Major Profit Decline in 2014 [iOS Blog]
Finnish developer Rovio, creator of the Angry Birds games and all of the subsequent spin-offs, yesterday reported the company’s first big decline in profits since the original Angry Birds game launched in 2009 (via VentureBeat).
Though the company’s mobile gaming business did see a slight 16 percent rise in revenue, a huge drop in Rovio’s licensing business, which includes the various toys, t-shirts, and action figures related to its games, was the true culprit of the company’s decline last year. Not to mention other mega-hit franchises, like Candy Crush Saga, slowly taking the once-dominant spotlight of Angry Birds.

The first official image from the upcoming Angry Birds movie.
The company’s revenue dropped to €158.3 million ($170 million) in 2014, from €173.5 million ($185.6 million) in 2013. Likewise, Rovio’s operating profit also fell last year to €10 million from €36.5 million in 2013 and €76.8 million in 2012. Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala hopes a steady release of new games and a renewed focus on advertising will pivot the company in the right direction for 2015.
“2014 results show that steps in the game portfolio, free to play competency building and advertising are going in the right direction. I am confident that with new simplified organisation and clearer vision, we will be back to the path of growth in 2015,” said Pekka Rantala, who took over as chief executive last fall, in a statement.
Rovio launched six new games in 2014, no doubt helping to bump up its mobile gaming revenue, with more than 600 million new game downloads for the company. It’s also already launched two new games in 2015, Jelly Jam and Angry Birds Stella POP!, which Rantala hopes will keep the brand’s momentum going through the first half of 2015.
Although it’s not to be released until the summer of 2016, Rantala also points to the buzz surrounding the Angry Birds movie as a boon to the company’s wilting licensing business. The company will produce the movie, which is set to star Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph, and Peter Dinklage.
Rovio no doubt hopes for the film to pick up the slack where Angry Birds Toons, Rovio’s 2013-launched animated kids TV show, has failed to increase the company’s licensing business year-over-year. Rantala notes that the film already has received “very positive reactions from major retail and license partners as well as from consumer focus groups”, which he and the company predict will translate into booming licensing deals in the coming years.
Lumia Camera and Lumia Camera Classic apps both receive small updates
Microsoft has pushed out new updates for both the Lumia Camera and Lumia Camera Classic apps for Windows Phone Lumia users today, but there’s no change log for either app. This likely means they include bug fixes.
NASA starts testing a more precise landing technology
NASA wants to visit celestial bodies we’ve never been to before, so it has started testing a precise landing system that will first be used for future trips to Mars. The engineers at Jet Propulsion Laboratory used a rocket called Autonomous Descent and Ascent Powered-flight Testbed (ADAPT) to perform two test flights back in December. ADAPT, by the way, was created as a reusable test rocket that launches and lands vertically. In both instances, it had to reach an altitude of 1,066 feet before it started its descent and the two-part landing system kicked in.
The first part, called the Terrain Relative Navigation technology, has a sensor named the Lander Vision System (LVS). It can maneuver a spacecraft to a precise location even without GPS by taking pictures of the terrain while descending. The system can then compare those photos to images it’s saved onboard to determine where it is and touch down as close to the planned landing site as possible. This works in conjunction with the second part of the landing system, which is an algorithm called G-FOLD. That one does onboard calculations to determine which trajectories “obtain the maximum performance from every kilogram of propellant.” And yes, the system can do all these by itself, with no human input.
This landing system is necessary if NASA plans to visit new planets, moons, asteroids or comets. See, for a spacecraft to be able to land on unfamiliar territory without touching down on rocky or dangerous terrain, it has to be able to find a good location on its own. The agency is hoping that this technology’s the solution to that issue, though two successful tests probably aren’t enough for NASA to start using it on actual missions just yet.

Droid Turbo to jump straight to Android 5.1 according to Motorola Software Engineer
If you own a Motorola Droid Turbo on Verizon, you’ve probably been waiting patiently (or not) for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to hit your device. Verizon doesn’t have the best record when it comes to Android updates, but we have some news (good and possibly bad) after the break.
First the good news. According to comments made on a (now deleted) Google Plus conversation by the Motorola software engineer, Luciano Carvalho, the Droid Turbo should be updated straight to Android 5.1. It would seem that Verizon has decided against wasting resources updating the Droid Turbo to an already obsolete version of Android. Another reason for skipping the earlier versions of Lollipop is that Android 5.1 has Voice Over LTE (VOLTE) support baked in.
Verizon demands VoLTE support and 5.1 brings it to the platform. Basically it… Porting all the VoLTE changes to 5.0 and then switch to the AOSP solution on 5.1 would be a huge waste of resources.
Now we get to the possible bad news. The decision to skip straight over to Android 5.1 could mean that the update will take longer to be pushed out to the Droid Turbo. Why? Well, Lollipop 5.0 was released last year, but the Droid Turbo is still making do with KitKat 4.4 some 5 months later. So it’s probably best to expect the Android 5.1 update in the coming months rather than weeks. Still, at least the Droid Turbo is getting a Lollipop update, it just might be a little later than hoped for.

Burton, Swarovski, Montblanc, and others are making premium Galaxy S6 accessories

Samsung has a long history of collaborating with luxury brands for accessories and even limited editions of its devices. The most recent example is Montblanc, which introduced ultra expensive styluses and covers for the Galaxy Note 4.
For the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, Samsung is really emphasizing design and how the S6 is “uniting the worlds of fashion and technology.” So it should come as no surprise that Samsung is doubling down on partnerships with fashion brands, including Burton, Swarovski, Montblanc, and Rebecca Minkoff, as well as artist Romero Britto.
Snowboarding gear specialist Burton is creating “vibrant protective covers inspired by two of the brands most popular print designs.”

Swarovski has collaborated with Samsung before; unsurprisingly, the company is launching a “colorful series of premium, protective, crystal-embellished covers that reflects the different shades of glass in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.”

Montblanc is offering “leather made cases and flip covers designed in the Montblanc manufacture in Italy.” While Rebeca Minkoff’s contribution is “a playful and subtly edgy flower print protective cover and leather pouch”

Finally, Romero Britto is behind the “unique, clear covers” you can see below.

Samsung says these accessories will be available from its store come the release date of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on April 11. Joining these premium products in the store will be a slew of more reasonably priced accessories for the two devices, ranging from battery packs to a multitude of covers.
