CIA program sought to compromise security of Apple devices
More information has come to light on government surveillance, with new information revealing a campaign by the CIA to break through the security of Apple devices.
Researchers working with the agency would apparently present their latest efforts at a yearly meeting called the “Jamboree”. Tactics included creating a modified version of Xcode, the software used by developers to build apps for OS X and iOS, according to The Intercept:
The security researchers also claimed they had created a modified version of Apple’s proprietary software development tool, Xcode, which could sneak surveillance backdoors into any apps or programs created using the tool. Xcode, which is distributed by Apple to hundreds of thousands of developers, is used to create apps that are sold through Apple’s App Store.
The researchers said that they could also use this modified version of Xcode to steal passwords and messages off of affected devices. They further claimed that they could use the modified Xcode to grab data from multiple apps:
Researchers also claimed the modified Xcode could “force all iOS applications to send embedded data to a listening post.” It remains unclear how intelligence agencies would get developers to use the poisoned version of Xcode.
Also unclear is how successful the CIA has been in implementing their efforts against Apple, and Apple itself has declined to comment. It should be noted that the agency hasn’t discovered a backdoor, but are rather working to attack specific points they believe to be vulnerable.
Apple has said on multiple occasions that they have not worked with any government agencies to create backdoors into their devices and software. Apple CEO Tim Cook in particular often notes the value of privacy for the company’s devices and software, penning a letter on privacy in September 2014.

GameStop rolling out support for Apple Pay nationwide
GameStop has announced they will be rolling out support for Apple Pay to their retail stores throughout March.
GameStop’s rollout is nationwide, to all 4,200 of their stores. Apple Pay is already available in some locations, and the company says they’re excited about this initiative. From GameStop:
“We are excited to make it easier and more convenient for our customers to shop at GameStop,” said Jason Cochran, senior vice president of U.S. stores at GameStop. “Providing a positive, memorable customer experience is our top priority. Incorporating the latest in mobile technology, like Apple Pay, into our stores is another way we are offering customers options to help simplify their purchases.”
Apple Pay will arrive at GameStop’s Spring Mobile retail brand later in 2015.
This rollout from GameStop comes just a day after Apple announced that 700,000 retail locations now support Apple Pay. Currently available on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Pay will be making its way to even more devices next month with the release of the Apple Watch, which will allow the iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s to use the payment service when connected to the device.

Third-party app now lets you change the language on the Microsoft Band
Not in the US and want to alter the language on your Microsoft Band (that you likely ordered off of eBay)? Then good news as our favorite app Pimp My Band is now in version 1.8 after numerous smaller updates over the last few weeks.
Today’s addition brings the ability to switch languages, including French, German, Italian or Spanish, as well as UK or US English variants. The feature is found near the bottom, where ‘Tweaks’ was introduced a few weeks ago.
Campaigners get Facebook to banish ‘feeling fat’ emoticon
On top of not being an actual emotion, “feeling fat” is no longer a Facebook emoticon. Following a campaign from anti-body-shaming group Endangered Bodies, Facebook has removed the emoji from its list of status update options, according to the Washington Post. The social network said “we’ve heard from our community that listing ‘feeling fat’ as an option for status updates could reinforce negative body image, particularly for people struggling with eating disorders.” In a Change.org petition that garnered 17,000 signatures, Endangered Bodies said the emoticon is “making fun of people who consider themselves to be overweight… all (we) ask is that it stop endorsing self-destructive thoughts through seemingly harmless emojis.”
Following the emoji’s removal, the woman who spearheaded the campaign said “this success shows us that people together can challenge the cultural messages that are so damaging to our ability to love ourselves and live comfortably in our bodies.” However, while “fat” is now gone from the status update section, Facebook seems to have kept the double-chinned emoticon and replaced “fat” with “stuffed.” Since there’s already a “feeling full” emoticon, we’re not sure about the need for both.
